- Remember when action cameras were fun? The GoPro Hero 12 isn’t a revolutionary leap over the 11, but it’s a great choice for anyone looking for a new action camera and it’s also a great reminder of how fun these things can be. So let’s take look at everything the Hero 12 can do along with how it compares to older GoPro models to see when an upgrade makes the most sense!
GoPro sent me the Hero 12 or free, but this video is not sponsored and I’m under no obligation to make a video about it or say anything specific. Episode 377: GoPro Hero 12: Evolution vs. Revolution - Кино
Tom! Super impressed with the GoPro Comparison Encabulator 1.0™that you whipped up + your hockey shot was creative genius 👏 Thank you for a fair + thorough breakdown of HERO12 Black’s features. Stoked to see all that you create 🙌
Hey thanks! That was the ultimate display of my engineering abilities. Patent pending.
@@tombuckis there an easy way that I can add phone calls into my live stream WITHOUT giving my phone number out
Since the beginning of my channel I’ve used the Hero 7 and then eventually went to the Hero 8. After watching this I still don’t feel the need to upgrade.
That's awesome! Just because something new comes out doesn't mean what you have is magically not good.
I got the hero 5 when they first came out and was super disappointed. I thought I would have gotten at least close to cheap camcorder quality. And the audio was pretty much unusable. The 12 looks MUCH better and the audio seems good enough as well. Maybe I'll revisit them. 👍
It’ll be interesting to see what you think after such a long time!
Thanks for doing these, Tom! Even when you talk about things I’m not in the market for, like mics, I still like to see what you have to say from your experience. I also love when you both do videos together. You play off each other so well Andy it’s a treat to see the interaction. ❤
This is so nice to hear! Thank you 🙏
I just really want better compression. It's clearly getting better each generation, but it's still obvious
My impression is that lack of compression is causing a bit of depression 😬
I am brand new to GoPro and I just ordered the GoPro Hero 12 thanks to your reviews. I can’t wait!
I hope you have a ton of fun with it!
This was a super helpful video! I love the fact that you created a six camera mount. This was the information that I definitely needed as I have never bought a GoPro before given everything that you’ve stated, I’m pretty sure I will just go ahead and get the 12. Thanks.
Thanks for the camera neutral review. Its a relief to see and hear a non bias review.
Thank you! It's held up very well for me and has been a ton of fun to use!
Wow, that 6 cam wooden mount thingy is such a great idea! So simple, yet gives better understanding of the differences than any other method I've seen 👍
Great video! Always wanted to get a GoPro. It's incredible to see how far GoPro has come since it's first release.
It’s wild! They’re so good now 🤯
My man just casually laying down that beat. Let's see some solos!
Loved the hockey creative shots... super well done... cool video 👍
Thanks Daniel! I really want to film a lot more at the rink now!
I've used every Gopro since the Hero 7 black...that's the first one I wont buy, the 11 already have everything I need. Great video
Yeah, if you have the 11 there’s probably no need to upgrade. 👍
Tom! I didn't know where to leave this comment so figured here was good enough haha - I just wanted to thank you for mentioning that remix feature on Adobe Audition. I've been using Audition (and lonnnng before that, Cool Edit) for like 15 years now, but I NEVER knew about that feature for it to extend songs for as long as you like automatically. I've always just looped tracks myself and would line up all of the beats by eyes and ears. I just used that feature today on a VO job that needed music and holy cow what a time saver. Thanks for mentioning that on the podcast!!
So glad it helped! It's an absolute lifesaver for sure. I'm not a Premiere editor, but I know they recently brought the feature into Premiere too, so that way you can remix songs without leaving the app. Super cool.
That drive around was hella funny.. but I think its a great test.. well done
OMG it's Eine the dog from cowboy bebop!
Haha, we definitely considered naming him Ein at one point 😁
Crazy to see the early gens and stabilization or lack thereof. Loving the backyard shooting 🤩 I'm on the 9 and am really interested in an actually responsive touchscreen and the 8:7... but may hold off just one more year.
I wouldn't be surprised if the 13 (or whatever it will be called) does bring in a new form factor/features, but the current ones are so good! The 10 and up have much more powerful processors, so things are way more responsive. It was tough navigating menus on my 5 & 7 here 😁
@@tombuck same, selfishly/hopefully they'll keep the same Enduro batteries
Came here for Tom Buck. Learned about GoPro in the process. Love your vids as always!
It’s a win win! 😁
Insane! I really love the idea of connecting AirPods to it and it being able to help shoot vertical content easier is great.
Definitely nice little features to have!
I am always impressed when someone like yourself has all generations of a camera still in the studio - I seem to lose some, break some and basically misplace somewhere in my house. I REALLY appreciate on your vids how you give us an engaging intro but also let us "read the last chapter" in advance so we can decide if we wanna stick around. Because of your great wordplay, I usually stick around and IMHO, the 11 with the bigger sensor and now moving forward is REALLY HARD to complain about. It is remarkable technology. I guess we can't call you TB12 😂 maybe just TBRGB? hahahahahah This was great!
Haha, thanks so much! This really means a lot to hear. And yeah, the cameras are holding up pretty well, although I think my 3+ is on the way out now. Definitely some weird things happening while I was filming this 😁
Nice video Tom (as usual), i have right now a DJI osmo action because GoPro have a lot issues with overheating, and i not talking about extreme conditions like desert, is a pretty impressive camera, good stabilization mode and 4k is neat, maybe the night mode is not the best but i think the night test between all gopro maybe for another video could be a must :D
I know I really do need to check out the Oslo Action at some point- it seems like everyone who has one REALLY likes it. I left out a night comparison here for the sake of time and since, well, I figured they'd all look pretty bad haha, but it could be a fun experiment!
If you use OBS as your virtual webcam you can add a shader filter to de-warp the fish eye.
This is what I use when I bring in feeds from my Wyze Cameras.
What an awesome tip! Thanks!
They are very cool!! Thxs, Tom!
Thanks as always!
Awesome 3D printed battery box! I have always loved the GoPro. I have always loved the fact that it is waterproof. I feel so much safer bringing it with me fishing, kayaking, or scuba diving! When they released the new device I was upset they didn’t have GPS. Then I remembered I have never used the gps anyway. I remember I was upset when Apple removed the CD drive on their laptops. Looking back they were right. I really don’t need it. Haha
Yeah the box has been super handy! Good analogy with the CD drive 😁
I cut out a whole part of the video asking if GoPros are even necessary when phones take great video and now also have super wide angles and amazing stabilization, but then I realized...oh right, I don't want to stick my phone to the outside of a car or dunk it in a lake 😬
I bought my first GoPro in September -a GoPro 4 Silver, $40 on eBay. I have one battery and a hodgepodge of accessories -no case, though. So, I did buy a $10 frame housing and a GoPro to 1/4”-20 adapter. I went with it so I can have a second camera to stream while I’m recording on my phone. My MacBook Air 2012 is not a powerhouse, so I’m just going to continue to use Steamyard, and see how it goes.
Hey that's a great deal and a fun camera to tinker with! It's nice that the older models have built in HDMI outputs.
@@tombuckthe hdmi out is nice, especially once I figured out how to make it clean. 😊 I had to buy a capture dongle off Amazon. I bought one of the cheap ones that Harris from Senpai Gaming has tried out.🎉 I’ll do my first Live Stream Saturday to try it out.
I have a hero 5 and I was thinking upgrading. After seeing this video, I think I'll grab a hero 10 which is $250 vs $350 of the 12.
$250 for the 10 is a great deal- it'll definitely be a huge upgrade from the 5! 😎
Wow! You really hit that GoPro with the hockey stick? You scored! The scenes from making the incabulator were amazing, dramatic stuff! Now I must admit that I've just ordered the DJI Pocket 3. I will for justify myself with future videos, but it'll also be used for BTS in the studio as well as covering live events.. Cheers!
I got inspired by the Mighty Ducks, so it was a lot of speed ramped editing (no GoPros were harmed in the making of this video 😁 ).
I'll be curious to see what you think about the Pocket 3. It seems really nifty!
@@tombuck The delivery is not before couple of weeks from now.... will definitely flag about it 🙂
I upgraded to the 12 for the max lens mod update and because my 11s oveheated... while diving using a dive housing.
The Max Lens Mod is so much fun!
Dogs so funny! Black and white trying to play meanwhile brown dog trying to be model for your content! 🤣🤣🤣
I'm very lucky to have actors on hand at all times. 😁
@@tombuck hahaha savage.
Hey tom do you have any videos on XLR cables specifically? Does it make a difference to the sound getting a budget one vs a more expensive one?
I don’t have that specific video yet, but yes, it does make a difference! I’ve found Rode’s new XLR cables to be great quality at a reasonable price.
I used to wanted a GoPro when I was 13 or 14.
I used to look at (and even read) the camera magazine back in 2016-17 and I saw these. I feel like, I really always wanted to get one of these little boys and until now. 😁
Probably what GoPro I'll be using, Idk.
I'll have to decide it for myself, Haha. 😅
They’re super fun! Definitely a cool thing to have in your camera bag.
@@tombuck I would’ve use it for blogging and overhead view if I have one of these, I’ll look for the best GoPros if could find one. 😁
I was thinking about getting the Sony RX0 II. Would you (or anyone else reading this) recommend the GoPro over that camera?
The biggest benefit with the Sony would be the bigger sensor. The downside is the price and the fact that Sony doesn't seem to be doing much with the RX line anymore, sadly. Doesn't make the camera any less great, but does make it seem a bit outdated.
Please consider reviewing the Maono PD400X
It’s a USB XLR combo mic
Thank you so much. Do you suggest it as a studio camera in a fix mode just for a medium shot streaming?
It can definitely work for that, especially if you don't mind a very wide depth of field with no background blur. I was thinking of making a video about this because there are a few tricks to make it smoother, like using the MediaMod to allow for USB power and HDMI out at full resolution. 👍
@@tombuck thank you. I also searched for your suggestion on a budget camera for RUclips creators and I couldn't find it.
Great comparison! I kind of wish they would do a revamp of the 7, that takes in a bit more light - while I do see the improvements in the 10, I don't always need it. All in all I am still kind of surprised how much image a small camera (as it is integrated into a mobile phone) can do. And those phone-cameras now are getting good at night. Maybe there is something other than increasing the sensor-size, that can be done (by whatever-law-of-physics they bend this time).
Also is that a Gigcaster 8 on your desk? And why didn't your RCP2 show levels?
Glad you liked it!
1. It really is impressive what these small cameras can do. I had a whole section about action cams vs. phones since phones have such wide lenses and great stabilization now, but ended up removing it for time. I realized that while the image quality is the same, I wouldn't want to put my phone in a lot of scenarios where I'd use a GoPro so I guess it answered my own question 😁
2. Yes that is a Gigcaster 8! I really like it, but it's much clunkier than the RCP in terms of interface. I actually had to send it in for repair though because it wouldn't record to the SD card. It's fantastic for virtual amp modeling with guitars and bass though.
3. I was recording via the Sennhesier MKH50 running straight into the FX3, so the RCP was really just there to look pretty haha
@@tombucknah, I wasn't thinking about calling my phone an action camera. I am hopping, that we can see improvements in action cameras, when manufacturers apply more learnings from those phone cameras to their newer models. In the end we'll likely just have to wait and see what the next thing is, that they will be able to improve.
How do you feel about the sharpness setting? I quite like High, but I'm thinking that Medium might actually be better.
It's funny you ask because I like the high setting too, but change it to medium for reviews and things because I think it's supposed to look less "GoPro-ish" and blend with other cameras better.
Never had much use for Action cameras, Put one on my dog once for fun.
Action cameras on dogs are always a good time haha
Your puns are just brilliant😂
Great review of the GoPro 12, Im enjoying my 12 & my insta 360 X3.
I heard you mention you did't like DJI as a company and was curious why? I definitely enjoy some of their products like my drone, gimbal & wireless mics.. all seem to be top notch and hard to compete with as ready to go products.
I actually think their products are great! It's the marketing side of things that gets weird for me personally. I've had several genuinely bizarre interactions with them myself and have seen how they interact with other people on RUclips for reviews and things and it really turned me off.
@@tombuck that's a side of them I haven't seen but I could definitely understand how that could turn someone off to a company.
@@njriveteliteI’ve got friends who have worked with them for years and have nothing but good things to say, so it’s all just individual experience. I just felt like addressing why I didn’t include the most popular GoPro competitor in this video since I sort of figured people would ask 😬
Is the GoPro 12 and the Rode Wireless Pro compatible... time code generator is a plus if YES!!!
With the Media Mod, yes they'll work together.
❤
(overheating)
Dji is better for sure
Looks like it may be time for me to upgrade my Hero 2 😂
You’ll definitely notice some nice new improvements 😁
I forgot which one I used to have...
It came in parts... 😅
It was either an extra battery or a display...
The audio was atrocious...
And the thing itself used to get extremely hot. 😅
Yes! They had “backpacks” you could attach to the back and then it needed a bigger housing to work 😁
Just when I thought I was set on the DJI action 4. Btw, why don’t you like DJI? I’m just getting into all those electronics so I want to make the right decision. Thanks!
DJI makes great products, I’ve just had some weird encounters with them personally as a company which makes me avoid them.
@@tombuck thanks Tom! Well, I value your opinion so maybe I’ll try the gopro 12.
I never shoot over 3 min / clip on my GP11 ,but I had freezing issue on my Gopro 11 so many time that alone make me want to leave Gopro.
My 10 freezes sometimes, but usually taking the battery out fixes it. The 11 and 12 have both been solid for me. But that's definitely an annoying thing to deal with.
4:53 I'm just here for the puppies! What are their names?
The golden is Ben and the corgi is Finley 👍
Half the sales tax, lol so true!
Too bad log is limited to iso 400
If you wanna restore your old GoPro, hear me out... HEAR ME OUT!
Take your GoPro, put it in the freezer, let it rest there through the night, take it out and try turning it on.
Is this really a thing? 🫣
@@tombuck I didn't believe it either, but I took my old boss's dead GoPro to try to fix it, tried everything without believing in this method, decided to give it a try as a last effort and it worked like a charm!
