I'd be dang. Jennifer Nettles’ voice is so pure with everyone’s emotions (both Men and Women). . . I've never been in a commitment (which never led to marrying) I loved artists such as Sugarland.
I'm not crying... you're crying. Everytime I listen to this song , I also cry. A guy. 46. But it reminds me of my exwife and the pain just comes back. Then the sympathy for someone who's going through such a traumatic life altering and isolating experience. The words and her voice combine make the perfect package of sadness.
The tears are real and the song came from a very deep place but country tells you a story and makes you feel every line or verse so looking at you it worked
At 58 years old I've sadly seen both sides of this fence. More often than you'd think, someone gets into a relationship with someone and grows close to them only to find far too late that they are married.
Yup. When I was a kid, (about 18) I met a guy at a club. It was during the summer and I was home and my mom picked up on the fact that he always called during the day (e.g. from work). We did some sleuthing and found out he was married, but had it not been for my mom, I'd have never have known.
Or, like me, you fall in love with a married man, even though you are only just friends with him, nothing ever happened, your heart just ... fell for someone it shouldn't. The line "It's too much pain to have to bear to love a man you have to share" almost killed me the first time I heard it.
Not true. She WAS going thru a divorce but he didn't cheat. She wrote the song after hearing Whoever's in New England by Reba McIntyre to explore the other woman's point of view.
That’s actually not true! The song was written by Reba as a different view of a cheating spouse. Jennifer’s husband did not cheat on her when this song came out.

Come on folks. Nettles wrote the song (there is this thing called Google) that was inspired by Reba McEntire's song. Nettles would go on to divorce her husband 5 years after she wrote the song, but it had nothing to do with infidelity. Nettles is simply a great singer and is able to interject emotion into her performances. In this case so much she started to cry. The filming of the video was halted until she could compose herself and then was completed. It was then decided to edit in some of Nettles' crying for dramatic effect.
Every time I watch this video I cry and i have watched it a lot. Her voice is stunning but her motions just kill me because I know what she endured. When i was 21 i made a vow to myself i would never ever cheat on anyone, because i just can’t hurt someone like that ever.
I enjoyed watching your emotions as the song unfolded. It’s real and pure and you can only get that kind of emotion and story telling from country music.

Hope this Helps.... Love from USA MINNESOTA! Sugarland’s “Stay” is the first of the duo’s chart-topping songs to solely be written by singer Jennifer Nettles. Although she has never lived the storyline of the song, she knew the subject of betrayal is something everyone could relate to, yet she wanted to tell the story from a different viewpoint. The song was written four years ago and inspired by Reba McEntire’s “Whoever’s in New England,” which was written from the perspective of a wife whose husband is cheating on her. Nettles knew countless songs written from that viewpoint but none from the other two people involved. She says most people don’t realize that even the person who is doing the cheating gets hurt as well. “Even though the person who is cheating might think he or she is getting away with something, they know they aren’t living their highest truth,” she says. “And they wouldn’t be in the situation if they were just happy-go-lucky in the first place. Nobody is happy in this situation.” Once she decided to write the song from the other woman’s perspective, Nettles was overwhelmed with emotions and says the song pretty much wrote itself. Kristian Bush, the other half of Sugarland, remembers being blown away by the lyrics the first time he heard the song. Bush says they often got odd looks from audience members wondering whether the song had anything to do with his and Nettles’ relationship. Bush is married and says his relationship with Nettles is a brother-sister relationship. His “big brother” instincts came out when they taped the video for “Stay,” as Nettles became overwhelmingly emotional. Bush recalls, “Immediately, I was just like, ’Everybody stop. Stop this! Y’all leave the room. Y’all made her cry.’ I was like a knuckle-draggin’ dad or a husband or something. I was really freaked out.” He went to console Nettles, who had stepped out of the room, and offered to send everyone home, saying they could continue taping the following day. But Nettles assured him she was fine and continued to cry during the next three takes, making it hard for Bush to watch. “About that time, I’m spent,” he said. “It’s not even noon and I’m emotionally drained. They had to tie me down to watch all of this happen. It was like watching someone torture your friend.”
Not many people realize it but she’s actually singing two different perspectives. when she starts singing emotionally she’s singing as her (the woman who was married and being cheated on)
Never apologise for your emotion. It's who you are Empress. A great song and brilliant singer. Never heard it before but will definitely listen to more from them.
I’ve seen many reactions to this song and one thing is constant… women cry over watching another woman in pain. We need to be this open and kind in real life to each other!
This is written from the perspective of the other woman who in the end found her strength get up off her knees & tell him to stay with his wife... that he couldn't give her what she needed.
True story- she was married to him and he cheated on her- the crying was real- they kept pausing to re-do the breakdown scenes until the guitarist finally said, “shes had enough.” And they kept the crying scenes in- ❤️💝👍
That song and especially the video hits you right in the feels. I love the raw emotion by Jennifer and how she’s hurting, begs him to stay with her, but develops strength as the song progresses until she tells him to stay away. This topic may be uncomfortable for some but Country tells it like it is and if there’s any emotion that you’re dealing with, this genre will bottle those feelings up and make music that will hopefully help you. Great songs along the lines of this one, about infidelity, realizing your mistakes, or even getting the courage to break free from a damaging relationship are All These Years by Sawyer Brown; Promises, Reasons I Cheat, and Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart by Randy Travis; It’s Your Call by Reba McEntire; and You Were Mine by the Dixie Chicks. She is definitely the other woman in this song. No question. I suppose you could come at it like she got what she deserved. But consider that maybe she met him and started a relationship and fell in love with him before she knew he was married. They feel like they should rescue him from his situation. Some day while sharing feelings alone the cross that line. She is now in love as the “other woman “ and I lives in Misery till she finally gets past the point of the girl of this song.
It can be taken either way. She is either the mistress or the woman who is getting cheated on. I think it is more of she is the mistress who finally decides to get up off of her knees.
