  • History and Release. In March 1975 the single became Newton-John's second consecutive number one hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, although it stayed in the top chart position for just one week. The record also received a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. The song also topped the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Singles chart and - in her continued success as a crossover artist - peaked at No. 3 on the Hot Country Singles chart.
    In the United States, it was Newton-John's fourth straight single to be certified gold for sales of one million copies. "Have You Never Been Mellow" also reached number one in Canada and peaked at number 10 in Australia and number 26 in Japan, but was not much of a success elsewhere in the world, failing to chart altogether in the United Kingdom.
    Cover Versions.
    The song is being performed as part of the 2007 Broadway musical Xanadu. Along with her later single Xanadu, a remixed version by "The Olivia Project" appears in the Dance Dance Revolution series of video games. The Dutch band Party Animals sampled the song in 1996 on their hit "Have You Ever Been Mellow". The song reached No. 1 on the Netherlands singles chart.

    Isn't it great to see a female performer not resorting to sexual behaviour to sell a song. Olivia you are the best.

    • @TenacityMatt
      @TenacityMatt 9 лет назад +10

      And because she does not resort to that she truly is sexy.

    • @MrDeterioration
      @MrDeterioration 9 лет назад +5

      ***** the problem is that many of these "sexual" women are not particularly talented. (The same applies to the male singers.) A little subtlety is a very sexy thing. It's a sign of intelligence as well which makes it all the more appealing. The overtly sexual nature of a lot of these people is just tiresome and pathetic.

    • @Lance37a
      @Lance37a 9 лет назад +1

      Well she did use her sex appeal just a few years later. That Physical video had a lot of controversy when it came out.

    • @patrickney6584
      @patrickney6584 8 лет назад +2

      +Lance37a "Physical" came out about six years later. At the time I just thought it was sexy, but I do view it differently as an older and wiser man. Harmless fun or something a bit more prurient? Or both?

    • @hermanschwartz2705
      @hermanschwartz2705 8 лет назад +1

      +Kevin Gibbs She never needed to behave that way. She had all the subtle appeal she needed. But, then came 'Grease'....and it wasn't so subtle any more. But I'm not complaining!

      She definitely was every young guy’s dream lady of our age.
      And note how classy she always was. She didn’t exploit sexuality like Madonna did (and still tries to do). And unlike Madonna, ONJ had genuine musical talent.

    This video is a real treasure. ONJ, the real deal, live, no lip-sync, pure vocal live and the way it should be. Listen for the little 'imperfections' which make it authentic and genuine as she works the vocal, the mic, the breath control, there's no hiding behind auto tuning, multi-tracked composite vocals, overdubs, etc.

    I love the very 70s sound of the instruments on this (as well as, of course, her lovely voice), particularly the start (I can't bring to mind what instrument is being used), it's such a lovely tone, very wistful and emotive. As I say, it's very much a 70s style of song, without me being able to say exactly what that style is. Lovely. I was born in the 80s but whenever I've heard a song, watched a TV programme or film from the 70s, there has always been a certain tone that is very individual and one which I like.

From a time when you just expected the singer to be talented and to sing songs worth listening to, songs that make you feel good and happy or want to get to know the singer, to talk with her and to really know her for who she is. Today what passes as music and singing is something different, like ugly and mean spirited.

    It was 1976, I hadn't graduated high school yet, and just outside our small town was parked these two giant buses, waiting for something, I was walking our pony toward the playgrounds adjacent and simultaneously I saw her and recognized the tour buses, she was talking to some people, she saw us, she excused herself and ran over to us . "Hi I'm..." I interrupted her ... "I know" ... I was speechless, but she was so kind, even knowing she was in complete control of my soul... I was amazed at my good fortune as we walked and talked, she made me feel important, significant, popular... I instantly loved her, she assured me that my life was going somewhere, and when I ask about hers, she said she envied me, and my time to be simple, and to wander aimlessly with my pony, she was like me once, and would be again. I wanted to blurt out "I love you!" She had seen that face before. She knew she was an angel, and as I reluctantly steered us back, she invited me to her concert... She hugged my pony... Nobody hugs that pony... Then, she held out her hands... my heart literally stopped as I moved toward her, my feet seperated from the Earth it seemed... and I was in her arms. I felt her lips on the side of my face and she wispered "I honestly love you" .... And I woke up. 😭

    I miss you. Olivia. You are that angel in my picture book when I was a child. Beautiful soul. If I could die so that you may live, I would do it. I wish it so. We will always love you, Olivia.

    Beautiful song, came out in the middle of the "mellow" trend of the mid-70s. And, LOOK & LISTEN, folks! She could actually SING! No lipsync, no cursed auto-tune, just true talent. Imagine THAT! That's the way it was done on "The Midnight Special" back in the REAL days of rock & pop.
