17 year mechanic in salty rusty north east USA here! Mat, in the future, a small amount of superglue will seal the small hole in the old boot. it will also work on the long cut, but thats more likely to fail. either way, super glue and rubber work very very well together for small repairs like that. the 2nd hand one will eventually fail from the heat damage though and crack. I too have fought with that death bolt and the trick is to use heat with an air hammer at the same time. turn the knuckle so the front bumper isnt in the way and do exactly what you did here, but with heat, rotation force from a gun and an air hammer pushing the bolt out. make sure to take the bolt out all the way and go easy with the hammer. youll hear the pitch of the noise change as the bolt begins to wiggle free. once it turns freely, you could also use an impact gun and crescent spanner to twist and drag the bolt out by the flange as opposed to continuing to use the air hammer. use a steel pipe cleaner brush in a drill to clean the corroded aluminum out and use copper anti seize for that channel in the knuckle. for the heat part, wrap some wet rags around the boots to shield them from excessive heat and oopsies with the torch.

@Mat Armstrong MK2 I used to break cars for a living in a scrapyard. Rather than using WD40; mix up half a spray bottle of acetone (nail polish remover) and half of power steering fluid. Spray the 50/50 acetone/PAS fluid onto any seized nut or bolt one hour before and it will come undone freely; without needing a breaker bar, heat, or impact gun, etc. Trust me, I have undone hundreds of seized nuts and bolts using this. The 50/50 acetone/PAS fluid mix works much better than WD40, or PlusGas, etc. Regards, WR4K.

Great fun, as always. Just to let Tony know, they did go to the moon, a rocket engine works with no oxygen in space, because they bring oxygen along. They have a huge tank of oxygen, for that exact purpose. They can go all the way to the moon, with a fairly low amount of fuel. Mat is slightly onto a big part of it. There's no resistance in space. So as long as you get going nothing will stop you until you either crash into something or get into the gravitational pull of something. Or you put the brakes on and burn fuel. The moon does have gravity, but since it's significantly smaller than the Earth, the gravitational pull is significantly lower. This means you will need to burn fuel to get off of the moon as well, and they did. But it takes far less than to get off of the Earth.

I am well educated more than what they try to teach us or whats they are allowed to and its impossible, all those money for moon and mars and those companies are just for manipulation. Money is nothing for them but our life , time and thinking is everything for them . Love your channel but your performance on the "Death Bolt" was like a "how not to". It is a double pinch fastner so you have to spread the joints to remove the tension from them, propper penetrating oil overnight, once the bolt can be revolved anti clockwise tap it out at the same time with a brass punch/drift. And then you did the absolute sin of not applying antisize before replacing it. But keep up the good work it is the most entertaining channel ever!!!!!!

Tip for that upper ball joint bolt (death bolt) if you've got it moving a bit then use a 1/2 gun to turn it. It'll keep using the hammer head on the gun bit after a minuet or so it would've broken through the corrosion. I've never had one snap on me doing that method

I work at Porsche, you’ve got the same upper arm assembly as the macan. I’ve removed loads of those bolts with an air hammer and a tapered punch bit. Knock it back right on the center of the bolt, makes easy work of it with no damage

Side note, have you seen the dry ice cleaner for doing under the chassis and other parts, plus what happened to the BRZ, last video was the new exhaust and going of to get wrap and turbo's ?

Bahaha the quality of this 2nd channel has really gone up! The ASMR bit was pure gold! Just a small thing to think about. I'm not 100% sure about cars but I know that in housing there's a minimal amount of thread overhang required on bolts according to structural engineering standards. Depending on the loads and forces that control arm sees, cutting that bolt so it is "flush" could end up being extremely dangerous. I hope you consider the safety factor on this as well mate

done the death bolts on my audi, first side same as you, other side I got moving with heat then put impact gun on it and span and moved the gun back and forth and it fired all the corrosion out. had to remove the bolts from rear of top arms so I could pull the hub assembly towards me to fit the gun onto the bolt. brilliant content tho 👌🏽

Engineering principles regarding aluminum & steel - what happens is known as galvanic corrosion when aluminum oxide reacts with the steel due to temperature changes. Aluminum contracts 3 x more than steel when frozen, so instead of heating the aluminum, they should have frozen it by using a full can of freezer spray. That way the steel pin would have separated from the aluminum with a loss less effort. I've been involved in mechanical engineering for 30 plus years, so do have quite some insight into solving such scenarios.
You can weld aluminum without TIG using your MIG welder set up with a spool gun. They are a bit unwieldy and not as consistent as using TIG but you can get it done in a pinch with decent results.
When removing the top pinch bolt " death bolt" Why didn't you fully remove it and clean it then copper grease it. It's called proventertive maintenance, so next time, it's not sized and comes out with ease. Also, all bolts you fit should be oiled. Makes life easier when working on them in the future. Why they made that top pinch bolt that way is just strange. But you did it. Also the work you do is great and I enjoy watching you do these jobs that others would keep well away from. Keep up the great work.

Did this job 2 weeks ago on an Audi A8. Had to use an air hammer, hacksaw, contractors drill, and specialty tool for drilling out the bolt. Props to Matt for mostly saving his… it is almost impossible. Now to tackle the other side. Yes, I needed a 2 week break and a vacation with my wife to recover from the first one. 😂

done the death bolts on my audi, first side same as you, other side I got moving with heat then put impact gun on it and span and moved the gun back and forth and it fired all the corrosion out. had to remove the bolts from rear of top arms so I could pull the hub assembly towards me to fit the gun onto the bolt. brilliant content tho 👌🏽

Engineering principles regarding aluminum & steel - what happens is known as galvanic corrosion when aluminum oxide reacts with the steel due to temperature changes. Aluminum contracts 3 x more than steel when frozen, so instead of heating the aluminum, they should have frozen it by using a full can of freezer spray. That way the steel pin would have separated from the aluminum with a loss less effort. I've been involved in mechanical engineering for 30 plus years, so do have quite some insight into solving such scenarios.

You can weld aluminum without TIG using your MIG welder set up with a spool gun. They are a bit unwieldy and not as consistent as using TIG but you can get it done in a pinch with decent results.

When removing the top pinch bolt " death bolt"
Why didn't you fully remove it and clean it then copper grease it.
It's called proventertive maintenance, so next time, it's not sized and comes out with ease.
Also, all bolts you fit should be oiled.
Makes life easier when working on them in the future.
Why they made that top pinch bolt that way is just strange.
But you did it.
Also the work you do is great and I enjoy watching you do these jobs that others would keep well away from.

I always mount those "death bolts" with cooper grease. Never had any issue taking them off 🤘🏽

Did this job 2 weeks ago on an Audi A8. Had to use an air hammer, hacksaw, contractors drill, and specialty tool for drilling out the bolt. Props to Matt for mostly saving his… it is almost impossible. Now to tackle the other side. Yes, I needed a 2 week break and a vacation with my wife to recover from the first one. 😂
