I'm finding out more and more that so many of the videos are just audiophile hobbyists that are spending hundreds to thousands of dollars just for different clicking sounds. All I care about is performance and it's so hard to filter through to figure out what's good value to cost based on that.

@@apo11ocat Functionality? Feel is actually pretty important. I wanted a better keyboard to increase productivity while typing. Say your job is to write articles and you have to write 5-10k words a day. Sounds reasonable to want a keyboard that makes that process smoother.
Anyway, I found the right one for me. Akko 3068. I like the sound, look, and feel. Sound and look were secondary but not going to complain finding all three in one device.

solid recommendations but Akko definitely has some of the best budget options out right now, even if they have north-facing LEDs

    • @fwiffo
      @fwiffo 2 года назад +85

I was about to say Akko. The look/finish is impeccable, they sound good out of the box, sound even better with simple mods, and they're somewhat in-stock depending on how picky you are about color.
The 75% ones have 4 nav keys on an exploded layout, which is very important to me. The GMMK pro is the only other option for that.
They also sell really excellent keycaps, and really good budget switches that don't have north-facing interference with cherry keycaps.
Future boards will be south-facing, which solves the only serious problem. Minor problems include very bad software (no VIA/QMK) and getting decent flex requires some modding.
They are also officially licensed with Sanrio in case you have a little sister.

Akko really brings the value. I live in the states and their boards only cost ~$5 to ship as opposed to the $30 flat Keychron is asking. Also they come with ALL the caps, which is impressive. The 3068 and ACR75 lines are solid contenders for that mid range ($80-120).

All these boards have been serious considerations for me. But after learning about RK from an old Switch and Click video, I bought and fell in love with the RK84, my first and current keyboard. The north-facing LEDS bothered me, but buying XDA profile keycaps solved that for me. I also learned that they now come with foam in the case and between the PCB and plate. Decent stock, but tape modding, Milky Yellows and Durocks, and some silly little o-rings made this board the very best bang for my buck.
I spent a total of around 150 for all my modding materials :)

It took me forever to find a full-size custom keyboard I liked because manufacturers didn't seem to care about that part of the market, but Keychron has made full-size boards for all different budget levels now, I love them (using the K10 right now but I plan on getting the Q6 eventually when it's time for a new board)

Hoping there is another version of this for all that has become available since this video. I think a lot of budget boards exist these days, and a lot of them are even hot swap and moddable, which means if we take the time and effort, we can make extreme budget options into boards that sound and feel like much more expensive ones.
I've suggested it before and I know that there are several boards that are almost certainly similar, but I have a Tezarre TK61 that I got for $30ish. The downside to it is the optical switches, but man, I'd love to see you and some others maybe use it in one of your challenges to see what can be done with such a cheap option and some modding.

So if you live in the eastern united state like i do, your order will take even longer since it has to go further to ya know get to you once it crosses the ocean. I love wafer thin low profile membrane boards... Got a Keychron K1 and never really liked it - I realized what I want isn't thin, it's uniform!
So I did my homework (thanks for your part in it!) and bought 2 Epomaker/Skyloong GK108s - one for home, one for work. I grew up with full-full keyboards and these are such a nice way to get into the hobby! Good stock stab lube, 5-pin ready, north LEDs. You can program 3 remaps into the firmware and 5 RGB modes of your choice, then toss out the driver and utility and they'll just keep it onboard. They're heavy and solid, with a good metal mount plate (always white.) I hear it's a fixer upper for connoisseurs but I already love it - I'll grow into modding it in a bit. Black home board is stock Gazzew Bobagums with YMD PBT carbon ZDA caps - looks sharp, feels great and it's whisper quiet! White work board is Akko Rose Reds soon to be lubed in 205g0/105 and a YMD PBT 9009 XDA set...
Yeah, I've been at it for about a month now so obviously I'm gonna be hooked lol

    Man I'm just so overwhelmed...
    Here's what I want:
    - has to have F keys (not with gaps every 4 keys like many have, don't like a gap between Esc and F1 and same for the clustered groups of F keys)
    - compact ish design. no numpad, so like no bigger than 70 or 75% i think?
    - wireless (cabled as an option is a plus but wireless is a must. BT or dongle are fine, multi device is a plus too)
    - has to have arrow keys but doesn't matter if they're cramped
    - backlit, preferably per-key customisable rgb but frankly a solid white backlight is fine too
    - and i think lastly, the more customisable the better but this isn't a deal breaker. if it's hotswap, great, if not well never mind. as long as i can swap caps down the line it's fine
this is basically everything i want out of a keyboard. I feel like keychron is my best option but god damn their line up is really confusing, the models are all like K number, Q number, C number, and it's not clear what any of them mean. I guess the number is the model so I assume K2 is the newer iteration of K1 right?
Also I currently have an Obins Anne Pro 1, I lubed the keys myself and I love the sound and feel, but I bought it second hand, the battery lasts about 5 mins, and the micro-USB port was already damaged/dodgy when I bought it (dishonest seller on fb marketplace, he pretended to not know anything about it when I messaged him about it after the fact...) so literally just moving the keyboard half an inch on my desk causes it to disconnect and I have to unplug/re-plug muliple times until windows recognises it. Also the AP is a 60% board so no F keys which is easily the biggest issue I have with it... But otherwise I love it, I basically wish I had this exact keyboard, but with a battery that holds charge, F keys, arrow keys, and that would be fine (even if Obins software is ASS. it's entirely customised via the Obins phone app which is just awful, but ehh I deal with it). Also the wireless on the AP1 is terrible, if bluetooth is enabled and you manually connect to one device but have it paired to multiple devices, the keyboard will just randomly automatically decide it wants to connect to a different device... So if I want to use it with my PC, I connect it, it works for 20 seconds, then it just decides "nah i wanna connect to your phone". There is no fix for this other than ONLY pairing it to one device, but I kinda have to have it paired at least to the device I want to use it with (i.e. my PC) AND my phone if I want to use the Obins app to configure the RGB or whatever (because when the battery dies it resets the backlight settings to just solid red, so you HAVE to enable bt and connect it to the phone to set your RGB profile again) all of this makes it unusable over bluetooth. it seems like Obins make great keyboards, but they just have 0 budget, so the product looks and feels great but everything around the product, the software, firmware etc is just utterly awful. It's a real shame cuz the AP could be such a great budged/beginner option I think

Just bought a Keychron K2 V2 with RGB aluminum frame, hot-swap, and Gateron G Pro Browns (it was the only config available). The Keychron V1 was unavailable. Might experiment with Glorious Pandas or something but ppl online claim the Gateron Browns and Yellows are okay. Currently using a cheap Amazon keyboard with Outemu Blues. Only problem is I use Linux and Keychron support seems kinda wonky.

I just got into mechanical keyboards a few months ago and sprung for the Redragon Draconic K530 Pro followed by the Royal Kludged RK98. Thanks to the likes of this and the deluge of similar videos I've watched, I recently purchased a Keychron V1 which I'll mod with some foam, I'll lube the stabilizers, and bought some Akko CS lubed red switches in Matcha (Macha?) Green with black, Razer Phantom keycaps. I look forward to putting it together next weekend.
While new to the hobby, the stock sound of the RK98 was surprisingly good, although keep in mind my newness to the hobby. Maybe Hipyo will review it.

as tempting as it may be to save money and buy a 'budget keyboard' (i.e., something under $60 or $50), I really recommend investing a bit more money on the real thing. Quality is much nicer and comes with wireless features in addition to wired features.

I am getting tecsee carrot switches, the ep68 barebones kit by epomaker, and some nice looking but simple pbt keycaps. Totals just over $150 for EXACTLY what I want long term I’m a gamer and not necessarily an enthusiast but I already know I LOVE tecsee carrots, the board is the size I like, no compatibility issues, and I can tape mod with electrical tape if needed but I doubt I'll need to, it's wireless with a dongle, and fits everything I need and want. Highly recommend

don't lie. most of us have started out with a clicky razer that was way too overpriced thinking we were cool because we had a cool clicky keyboard. that was my. now I'm on a 60% hyperx keyboard at about the same price that actually sounds pretty nice.

I ripped open my £30 keyboard for the first time ever and lubed the switches, taped the PCB (with electrical tape which sounds amazing) and filled it full of strips I cut from an old foam camping mat. It's made such a massive difference and I mean huge that I am now thinking of buying a slightly more premium budget board lol - it's really addictive.

Shoutout to the Keychron K8 Pro. $89-119 from barebones to fully assembled (and they have an aluminum frame option), white/RGB backlight, comes with non-backlit doubleshot PBT OSA-profile keycaps(OSA has similar slanting between different rows like OEM, but is rounded kind of like DSA, but cylindrical concave instead of spherical), silicone case insert, foam PCB insert, polycarb case, TKL configuration, hotswap, and wired/wireless modes with a ~2 hour battery life with the LEDs on, ~8 without. There's also the upcoming K6 Pro with the same features, in a 60% layout.
I got the white backlight fully-assembled board for $114 shipped (with pre-lubed Gateron Red switches), a set of keycaps for $20 on Amazon from YMDK(OEM profile White doubleshot PBT backlit side-legend keycaps, which are AMAZING with the south-facing LEDs of the board), and a set of Kailh Speed Bronze switches (which I definitely got robbed for, $40 for 120 switches instead of $25 for 90 from a different vendor, in the interest of getting them next-day). It sounds and feels amazing to type on both with the pre-lubed reds and the bronzes. I even set up an account on Monkeytype just so I could have an excuse to type on it more, since the clicky sound is just SO perfect.
