Amtrak's traditional dining is good diner food, but Amtrak's flexible dining is nothing but microwaved frozen pre-prepared entrees. Amtrak resorted to flexible dining during the pandemic when ridership fell significantly at a time Amtrak was forced to furlough its diner staff. Amtrak has been very slow returning to traditional dining on many of its trains though...
I recognized both your mom and dad by the backs of their heads as you were walking to board the train !!!! I loved when you opened the slider door to their room. What a great surprise and treat.
Wanted to take the amtrak a few years ago, but with another route... NY to Chicago, then to New Orleans, then to LA, then north, then east back to NY.... a full round-tour, with lots of stops, to use at least 2-3 weeks... Well, RL happened with health problems... So this was really lovely to watch! ❤
I recently did my longest Amtrak trip, from Philadelphia to Chicago on the Cardinal, and then from Chicago to Seattle on the Empire Builder, and it was an absolutely sublime experience. I read an entire book over the 3 days in my sleeper cabin. I love Amtrak so much and I'm already excited planning out my next trip
Hahaha great video Will! And i immediately recognized that you have both parents with you! That is awesome to be sharing this experience with both of them 🥰
Your comment about coach being comfortable, but not 52 hours in one go comfortable is so true. When Southwest airlines melted down over Christmas a couple years back I was forced to take Amtrak from Los Angeles to Houston. The crisis sold out the entire train so only coach was available! It was a LONG trip. 😅
I took that train from New York to Chicago in 1991. Exactly the same train and sleeper configuration, toilet right next to your seat. Cannot believe it's not been updated since then and still so very slow.
I have traveled eight legs on the Empire Builder, California Zephyr, and the Southwest Express. I have had the bedroom on 4 legs and the roomette on 4. While in a roomette, I would have LOVED to have a toilet in my room, even if it is next to the bed. That is especially important in the middle of the night; it is also not very pleasant to follow some person who has just lit up the tiny bathroom. Also, I found the hallway coffee to be very good, each and every time, as well as the dining car food.
I have been fortunate to travel by cruise (balcony cabin), airplane (economy class), and train (handicapped sleeper compartment) and though now unable to travel due to age and disability, I thoroughly enjoy your videos. They give me a vicarious experience that I can enjoy. Thank you
I did this exact trip back in 2022, but your trip was a lot less dramatic than mine. I incurred a 3 hour delay at Albany after the replacement locomotives wouldn't work, and then neither would the replacement replacement locomotive, so we had to reverse back to the station after about a mile of progress. On the Zephyr I got downgraded from a roomette to coach class which was as fun as that sounds, then we were delayed another 3 hours as we had to run at 15mph due to a tornado warning! Overall it was a fun and an interesting experience, mainly for the scenery, wildlife and people I met. This journey tells you the story of the USA. Coach class is much more social than rooms, so that was a positive. The observation car was the place to be if you're in coach, and also bring supplies as the cafe bar offering is a bit patchy. I dare you to this in Coach Trek ;)
Another excellent post... and sharing your lovely parents was a real plus! About the cost: I rode the Zephyr a few years ago, in a roomette, from Chicago to Calif. The first price that I was offered was too high. I kept looking until I got a price I could afford. I asked Amtrak employees about their favorite routes. The most beautiful they said was The Empire Builder, going from west to east. That train goes through the northern Rockies in daylight so you get more mountain viewing than the other way, which was good to know.
Singapore to Bangkok was one of the best train trips I've been on, outside southern Africa. As a budget traveller, I chose the regular train, it was fantastic, none the less.

@@ronclark9724 Anybody who wants to EXPERIENCE America, will drive a car. Your own schedule, your own route, your own private space, your own speed, your own air conditioning, your own music. @@ronclark9724 Anybody who wants to EXPERIENCE America, will drive a car. Your own schedule, your own route, your own private space, your own speed, your own air conditioning, your own music. I'm European and live in the EU, and had to take mass transit for over 20 years, multiple countries, both urban and rural environments. Anybody promoting mass transit at any level - is insane, and having been through those ideological arguments literally thousands of times, their arguments ALWAYS without fail, come from a place of phony moral superiority and feeding their own malignant narcissism.
@@ronclark9724Or drive a car.
I just did my first Amtrak trip last week! But I've been a fan of your channel for about a year. Thanks for another great video!
I still can not get over the loo next to the bed! It's always lovely to see your parents. Nice one, Will!
India trains have those too! It wonderful
And who do you connect the loo with the parents?
You are a good Son taking your Mom and Dad on these trips! I am their age so I love seeing them along.
Your parents got the best son in the world... Much love from the code 254
Man I tell ya I wish I had a journey like this with my pops. You parents excitement makes me smile
The only channel I care about at the moment! Might have to do this train ride soon!
Your parents are so cute. I don’t know if it’s the accent that adds to it but just adorable. 🥰
I love the sleeper train videos these are my favourite videos you do 😊😊
My first ever Amtrak trip was coach all the way from Newark, NJ to Los Angeles. I did it all by coach. It was comfortable over all but sleeping was an interesting experience. I did the California Zephyr from San Francisco to New Jersey. This video brought back so many memories. Keep up the great content fellow traveler!!!
Trek trendy is such a good youtuber
i have done this trip twice . in fact we are going again in a few weeks. I enjoy the ride. figuring I will never drive across this is a great way to see the country.
Always a blessing travelling with parents and spending time with them. How long have your parents been married?
Back in the day, I rode the Greyhound from Chicago to San Francisco, stopping at various places. I never knew I could sleep in so many varied positions. At one stage I woke up looking up at my ankles. Coach looks great to me 😃! I think it's wonderful your sharing this experience with your parents - it's really something to be cherished, believe me. Wonderful video.
If you haven't seen it, watch the iconic Chicago Union Station scene from the movie, "The Untouchables" starring Kevin Costner, Sean Connery and Andy Garcia. It takes place on those same marble stairs.
Another great thing about your traveling experience is that you constantly give knowledge about the places and history and that alone is a amazing addition to your content always excited to be apart of every journey you take
It's 2024 we should have 200mph bullet trains across country
Why? We have a plethora of affordable airlines that are 3x as fast as even a 200mph railroad.
@@Chilly_Billyhow many planes cash there hasn’t been 1 bullet train crash
I think it would be too difficult and expensive to build the infrastructure needed to accommodate a bullet train over the Sierra Nevadas and Donner pass.
We should but military superiority is more important.
Autozone will sell you a flux capacitor sweetheart while you cry
My gosh I remember the first ever train video on this channel being an Amtrak one and blowing up- good to see you going back Will!
I thought it was fitting for my 200th video :)
@@Trektrendy wow- video 200! Had no idea- congrats mate!
For those without the points for the Park Hyatt the Chicago Metropolitan lounge has some pretty good showers sleeper car passengers can use.
Wow beautiful scenery, thanks for taking us along.
7:14 as a born and raised Hoosier…I’m so sorry you had to travel through
That's so cool, you rolled right past my building in New York!! This Amtrak train blows its whistle every time it passes, two long, one short, one long.
I wouldn't fancy using that toilet either, or sleeping next to it lol..... Apart from toilet looked like a nice train journey
Glad the second train didn't have that toilet
If you are disabled or suffer from urinary incontinence you're happy to not have to leave the room and find a toilet that isn't being used as well as trying not to pee your way down the corridor! Trust me, I know.
We americans love sh*tters next to our beds. And love that the previous passenger may of had a big load of diarrhea coming back from California where he had mexican burritos
@@michellesartori6695OK fair enough
What a wonderful way to travel from east to west in USA. Not a bad price really for all of you. Thanks very much.
You’re a bit more seasoned than I am with train travel but I know that the first time I slept on an Amtrak train (in a roomette) it wasn’t great but by night #2 I slept like a baby.
Thank you once again for an awesome video! Always nice to see your Mom and Dad. Greetings from 🇳🇴🇳🇴
