      mountable thermal does not have the range to make it possible to be an asset for detection. within the distances that if can make out an object, you can reliably do so with eyesight or night vision. now if you have a thermal scope or binocular that is different. but the type of range available to make thermal truly worth it is the type mounted on military aircraft

    People often don't understand how poorly NVGs do in areas with alots of lights like an urban/suburban area. The porch and street lights wash out areas to the point you are better off without. Thermals give you the ability to see through the bright patches that wash out your nvgs.

    • @casper3130

    Great points. One day not far back I was walking the trails behind my home at night with my PVS-14 mounted and my handheld thermal. I was looking into a field between my position and my house with my NODs and didn’t see anything. Brought up my handheld thermal and there was a small herd of deer not 20 yards in front of me. They were bedded down in tall grass staring right at me. That’s Proof enough right there.

    Thermal has advantages over starlight with the exception of a few things. Thermal can be used night or day with out the need to adjust light or worry about sensitivity. Thermal sticks out better as most targets will give off heat. It is harder to hide heat than color or profile. One disadvantage of thermal is that it only sees surfaces, not visible light. A window will appear as a flat surface with thermal as it only sees heat, starlight will see through glass. So... Be mindful of limitations of such devices. I personally would choose thermal because of it's advantages but either will assist in seeing where your eye don't.

    I use NVGs at work and know them well. Even then I still went with the RH25 as I think detection is worth it over just being able to see and even that depends on the ambient light. I don't think most understand how NVGs don't work well when there is no moon light. If you are having to us IR for your NVGs to work then you are still very limited to how far that light goes.

  • @sonar357
    @sonar357 7 месяцев назад +2

    I think there are pros and cons to running either NV or thermal. With NV you get more natural contrast like you have during the day (as you mentioned) and a bit longer battery life at the expense of seeing color definition (easier to disappear without camo). With thermal, yes, you can spot someone hiding behind a bush much easier, but thermals tend to eat through battery life a bit faster compared to 'similar' NV systems. Also, it can be a bit tricky for your brain to adjust to thermal and 'processing' the images depending on what kind of vision mode you're using.

    I agree Thermal is a must have for if we deal with a shtf situation but, as someone who has bought both Thermal & Night Vision in my opinion one should be the NV first then get the Thermal. Reason, both Units have a situational purpose. Thermal Monocular is hard to walk under, cannot be used thru glass, isn't as capable for up close use, uses 4-6 batteries to operate and it eats up batteries in less than 10 hours. Night Vision is way easier to walk under, can be used thru glass, is capable of close up use, gets 40+ hours of use on (1) AA battery, can be used with an IR Firearm Laser or NV capable Sight. In my personal opinion PVS14 Gen 3 WP Monocular Night Vision and a Thermal Scope is the way to go being the Scope can be used for a Thermal Monocular or Thermal Rifle Scope. When I purchased my Thermal and Night Vision I bought the Thermal Scope first and wished I had bought the PVS14 first.

      @@5jjtjerryFB is a fusion bino, which means that it combines a thermal imager and nv into one unit. You can retrofit thermal clip ons(jerryc5, ecoti) onto conventional nv but they project the thermal image infront of your tube which can cause light loss and is generally clunky.

    Biggest apprehension to going this route is I don't have any way in person to look through this type of setup and play with it a bit. I've borrowed friends night vision and theres enough media content out there where I know exactly what I'm getting for my money. I'm scared to buy one of these combo setups and it turn out to not really be what I want. Especially since I already know I'm not a huge fan of using just a monocular pvs 14 by itself.
    Are both tubes usable simultaneously? What does it look like to have both down at the same time? I'm not expecting it to overlay like an actual fusion system, but is it advantageous or practical in any way to have both tubes down?
    Just based on lack of experience with thermal, I find myself wanting to play it safe by getting a dual nvg for my helmet and then maybe a having a small thermal on a lanyard or pocket just for scanning and detection.

My question is…are you open to have like a night time into class to people to introduce them to nv or thermal once you are up and running? I love being able to test drive before I buy. While I had previous experience with nv in Iraq thermal is new to me and as a hunter it’s a pretty important piece of gear I would like to add to my kit. Thanks man for all you do!

    Night vision: Let's you wander through the woods, shoot stuff and do basically everything you do during the day (with some modifications).
    Thermals: Ain't nobody escaping your all-seeing eye.
    Like I told some family that was debating between the two: are you going to be wandering around doing stuff in darkness or are you gonna be posted up somewhere wanting to see sh*t? Both is good but let's be real this stuff is expensive. Figure out what you might actually need. You technically don't *need* this stuff, but it's good to have and it's cool af!

    Thanks for the vid.
    A thermal device has been rolling around my mind for a while. If I'm going to make a purchase the budget only exists for a single device.
    Between a stand alone thermal and a COTI for my PVS-14 I'm leaning towards a stand alone because it can operate independently.
    What other considerations should I be including?
    What are your thoughts on the question?

    • @KeystoneCarry
      @KeystoneCarry  8 месяцев назад +1

      Stand-alone is 100% my recommendation. Overlays generally suck. I hate to say that, but it’s true. ECOTI/COTI and even the CE5 has pretty bad image quality. This is because the image has to pass through the intensifier tube/glass.
      I’d look at the CBL19, ML19, STINGIR 384 as your entry units. They all are great, and we carry all of them.

    It’s so crazy to me that you brought up the escaped convict in pa, he was legitimately caught 2 minutes from my house and I kid you not. My left wing neighbors bought guns because of how terrified everyone around here was when we all caught wind the day he got a gun. You’d be surprised how fast it made so many people pro 2a that never were. For me, it showed me I needed something to see at night, thermal or night-vision. Especially with our coyote problems around here as well. Thinking it’s best I just end up getting both but I think I’ll get thermal first. Your video was very informative and i appreciate it.

    I think thermal and night vision can break being electronics requiring batteries, where having other things would be more useful.
    ATN, Burris, and few new companies have cheap thermals from China. SeekIR, FLIR, and some others have phone camera thermals. Really if your getting a serious thermal your spending $5K for a rifle mounted optic, I would go with Trijicon. (Electronics made in Europe) At their roadshow if you bought a thermal, they would give a $1,500 rifle scope for free. You could see that having a 612x thermal was much clearer than a 312x resolution that was muddy. I would get a 60mm objective, longer range thermal.

      Start with a weapon that has a quality optic, quality white light, and fully set up. Then, for many people, a PVS14 makes the most sense. Then a handheld or helmet mounted thermal. For some folks the thermal makes more sense first.

      You get about 10x the battery life off of dual tube NVGs compared to an RH25, it's also much easier to actually move and navigate under NVG compared to thermals. Best setup is NVG for 99% of the time, thermal for 1% of the time where you do quick scans or are shooting.

    Be careful with thermal and assuming it's a magic bullet, there's plenty of ways to reduce thermal signature to where even the nicer handheld units won't easily detect someone further away than 50yds or so. It can give you a false sense of security.

    The wilcox G24 mount is stupid money $426 on sale with vet discount
    Mod armory bridge around $700
    Now Im testing the Argus LWNVM and it seems ok for $149
    Found a lower cost made in the USA bridge that I am going to order if they go on sale for black friday $380

    Technology is advancing all the time. There are reports of sensors that are getting towards the sensitivity of analog tubes. So wait about 2-5 years, and IR fusion devices are going to be much nearer to parity with analog. At that point, they might be better in some applications than analog.

Then there's the problem of having a place to store it. How to store it. Maintenance on the equipment. Hell just in guns, ammo, night vision, thermal, scopes you could easily have $20,000 invested in a very short period of time for the well off. The technology isn't "moving towards fusion" it's already there. It's been there for the last 5-10 years. IR-NV fusion devices are ALL extremely expensive; well into the 10k range. An overwhelming majority of people will probably never be able to afford IR/NVGs. If you have to pick one it should be IR. Modern IR offers far more capability than NV.
