    Another benefit of SPVKBG that was not mentioned is the ability to spread… I replanted my yard last fall with SPVKBG seed and realized (after the fact) that all box stores were out of straw…. The rain proceeded to wash away all top soil as well as approx 90% of all the planted seeds (sloped front lawn) before the growing season was over. This year I let it spread organically (did not re/overseed). Less than 10% grass coverage when the growing season started this year and is approximately 95% grass covered already - so thick that it does not allow an opportunity for weeds to invade. Even in the July (hottest month - Indiana), the SPVKBG continued to spread. Watching it spread so quick/fast has been mind blowing. It looks amazing!

    Been watching the channel for years. I live up in Michigan and all your advice has always helped. The difficulty is understanding that it takes a lot of seasons, to get the results when you start with a lawn that was neglected. What is amazing to me is that the younger generation at the office starts talking about watching your channel without me telling them about it.
    And then I take them to school and open up great discussions on what we are all dealing with. It is very heart warming also when they say someone younger than them has also talked about your advice after I showed them the way.

    I visited a ProVista KBG sod farm. Was pretty neat. They had a long strip cut and you could yank on it and it was so thick you couldn't make it fall apart.

    I 100% agree spvkbg thrives in shade. The only place my spvkbg grows in height is in the shase. It does not grow in full sun. It needs a lot of water in the summer at full sun.

    This season I started to notice how good my GCI TTTF was growing under my kids trampoline during the hot part of summer. I have been moving it around the yard and have had TTTF germinate in Central Indiana in July during a very hot drought with only water once a day. Now I see they use "trampolines" to grow grass at universities. The kids haven't used the trampoline once this year, but now it is considered a lawn tool.

    The provista KBG has a slower growth rate, it allows it to not uptake the glyphosate and recover, it also has lower nutrient requirements because of it. It’s like running a PGR but the gras instead is bread for it, there’s a few other selected qualities but my guess is why it’s better in shade is the slower growth rate meaning it needs less photosynthesis overall so it can survive in a lot less sun unlike other bluegrasses

    I'm very curious if there's been any studies on the Scott's ProVista Kentucky Bluegrass growth in the Pacific Northwest, specifically west of the Cascade Mountains where most local universities discourage mono stands of KBG due to the weather patterns and fungus issues. I assume because the ProVista is a slow growing grass it must be difficult to push disease out of the turf. I'd love to know if that has been tested or would ever even be considered.
    Great podcast bud! 👍🏼

      If you want an easy way out you will never find it. But if your willing to put in an hour a day to your landscape, anything will work except warm season grasses. KGB will fill the cleanest, in my opinion. The rye grasses that creep still bunch up and destroy your turf slowly but surely.

    I'm not sure i agree with Sue on studies for KBG shade performance. With 20 minutes of research I came across 2 different KBGs that were tolerant to heavy shade... more than 50%. I'm currently using both in 2 different shade areas. 1 comes as plugs only, the other is available as seed. Both are doing very well

    I installed ProVista St. Aug in March in my Florida backyard. Besides the characteristics you noted, I find it’s thirstier than my Floratam. It shows heat stress easier and a brief afternoon watering helps a lot. Has this been your finding? Also, the stolons seem a lot more aggressive (in a good way) than my Floratam. It’s spreading like crazy into areas that I don’t have grass. It seems to play well where it borders my Floratam and I can see a clear border line.

    Perhaps this is a silly question or something covered and I missed it. Does the slowed growth rate mean the grass has reduced nutrient intake as well? I.e. would fertilizer/bio-stimulant app rates or schedules change too or does the ProVista KBG take in nutrients at the same rate, just grows slower?

    • @cassiereed8541

    Awesome podcast! Can you please share Cassie's social media info so I can contact her? I installed 18,000 sq ft of ProVista KBG last November which went dormant right away. I live in Chicagoland. It's almost August and I still have seedheads and stalks! My first three cuts in the spring were at 1.5" (3rd cut was May 13th). But the seedheads didn't pop-up until middle to 3rd week of May but because we had 90 degree days in May with no water, I started getting brown/drought areas all over the place (even with my irrigation system) so I started cutting higher to help everything recover. So basically I still don't know how to get rid of those seedheads/stalks. My mower doesn't go lower than 1.5" and I didn't want to scalp at the end of May or in June/July when we've had unbelievable hot temps with no rain. Any suggestions??? On a separate topic, I fully support the shade tolerance claims! I have a huge section that's almost all shade and it's been growing the best and has the best dark green color compared to the rest of my lawn so I'd argue that it does MUCH better in the shade vs full sun.

    • @cassiereed8541
      @cassiereed8541 2 года назад

      @@paulanthony978 Hey Paul, watering was one on a needed basis and overhead irrigation was applied 1-2 a week depending on the weather. The trail was done outside so it received the growth season of 2020 and 2021. For example our 2020 was pretty dry in Ohio and our 2021 was pretty hot in the summer so irrigation was applied more or less as needed. Amount was not measured. For NPK we focused on lbs of N/1,000sq ft with a 32-0-4 and a 4 step program each year plus once at the time of installation. Fungicides were applied as a preventative to both the conventional and PV and as needed for control to allow for no confounding factors in the trial so we could quantify the light requirement. (further details will be in the publication) Highly recommend this product as a solution to your poa problem!
