Believe me, most folk in that country hate communism, but the regime is not exactly communist anymore, but a totalitarian. Remember how May Flowers had to escape to America from England's bloody Mary who burned a record number of dissidents at the stake? "Commie-in-name-only" (CINO) regimes like the ccp and vcp are kinda like bloody Mary's England...they will literally torture you, imprison you, or just beat you to death the minute you try to revolt against their brutal control. They have secret police everywhere, disguised as ordinary citizens and special military forces on stand-by to crush any uprising (remember the Tiananmen Square Massacre?)
"I don't think I understand Communism that well... or maybe they don't." (Yeah, it's the second more than the first. It's like in some parts of Asia where they pray to the Buddha. Completely misunderstanding the fundamentals to do what they know. Communist these days mostly just means that the ruling party keeps control and doesn't let anyone run against them in an election. They can be highly authoritarian, but also relatively stable, like a huge council of kings running the show. Because they keep people relatively happy and safe, they can continue to rule. I like that you're arguing with the laws of a country you're not from without knowing the laws about the country that you're not from. US international driver's licenses aren't valid in Vietnam. It's the law. They let you off while you were the one breaking the law. Also, some people won't understand that the complete mistranslations were not accurate. I feel like you know that, though. Saying "I love you all" and hearing back "I love youuuuu" ... That's so sweet. Vietnam is like China but not dirty or overpopulated. Tell people you love em and you'll be surprised what you get back! @@clayfreeny9650yeah they ripped him off man. Normally they charge like 10 bucks or something. Acceptance of idp depends on mutual acceptance of each other's drivers licences. @@JB-ef7ks I tried bribing them but they wouldn't take it. They had like 20 foreigners pulled over and everyone had to pay the 1.5 mill if they wanted to keep their bike.
People from the US, Canada, and Australia cannot ride/drive in Vietnam legally. Read up on the 1968 Vienna Convention, which none of these countries signed. The cops have every right to pull you over even if you have an IDP and a legit motorcycle license from those countries. Imagine being so insecure of your own ideals you have to go and beat others up for having a different way of thinking.
Many travellers do not realise there are THREE IDP's (International Driving Permits). They are no's 1926, 1949 and 1968. Dependent on which country you are visiting will determine which IDP you need. For instance, Vietnam is no.1968. For Cambodia it is no.1949 and Thailand no.1968. For instance, if you were visiting Thailand and then travelling to Cambodia you would require TWO IDP's. One for Thailand (1968) and one for Cambodia (1949). I hope this clears up any confusion.
Had a buddy go to Vietnam, had to bribe the police 4 separate times while he motorcycled across the country, crazy how things can change drastically from border to border in so many ways
Was your friend riding illegally? If not, then bribing isn't necessarily. Unfortunately, many whom ride there are doing it illegally. An IDP isn't enough if you're from a country that didn't sign the 1968 Vienna Convention (this includes the US, Canada, Australia, etc.)

They were literally being polite, and even called you 'ban' or 'friend' while you weren't there, and you translated it to some racist nonsense about communism vs. imperialism.
