Come to Chicago, we'll show you around. You'll love it! Most Chicagoans enjoy thin crust tavern cut, style pizza better than the deep dish. Chicago's architecture is the best in the world. I still don't get people moving out of here. You might have to dig snow occasionally (and very occasionally far from a constant occurance), but the house is standing at the end of every year. I live in Chicago and am from Los Angeles. I've lived in many large cities in the US and Chicago has to be the most beautiful of them all. It is so green in the summer. I have never seen so much green and flowers in my life. It's clean. There is so much to do. The neighborhoods are amazing and in Summer there are lots of festivals and concerts in the parks. It's very walkable and easy to get around. Yes, Chicago has cold winters with snow, but the Spring, Summer, and Fall are fantastic. I don't think I can move back to California because I am in love with how green and colorful this city is. I could never leave it.

I visited Chicago many times, but once I was there during the Christmas season. I was on the Magnificent Mile where some very good, high-end shopping takes place. I stepped outside a store, I believe the famed Neiman Marcus, and it was snowing really large flakes. The Christmas lights were everywhere and a horse-drawn carriage passed in front on the street. Chicago feels like an upscale new york. It's clean, it's friendly and the buildings, gosh they're beautiful buildings. Museums, all kind you can think of, the lake is truly like an ocean and it has pretty good beaches, although the water is always freezing cold. One of the best things about Chicago is the neighborhoods. All different and with different vibes. Chicago is way underrated, but for me is in the top three of favorite cities in the world and that is saying a lot since I've been lucky enough to be pretty much anywhere in the world. All the great lakes area is beautiful. Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan all extremely beautiful states. The great lakes are just too diverse and nature at its best. Not many mountains, like in the west, but the thousands upon thousands of lakes, forests, etc...

I grew up in Chicago. It is freezing December thru early April. It then rains for a bit, then begins to heat up in late May. By late June, it is hot as hell with 100% humidity until the end of August. September is wonderful, and then it begins to cool down mid-October. From June thru September, there are a lot of outside street fairs and activities. Less so in the colder months, but some. The city is beautiful, there are beaches, and it is not far from Indiana Dunes National Park. There are huge world-class museums, fantastic nightlife, a cosmopolitan atmosphere with more of an old-world charm compared to the in-your-face New York experience and the food is out of this world. The city is divided into distinct neighborhoods, many with ethnic distinctions. Parts of the South and West sides are poor and dangerous, but there is almost no reason to go to those areas. The rest of the city is pretty safe. Some of the best distinct neighborhoods are Armour Square [Chinatown], the Near West Side [where one can find Greektown and Little Italy], many neighborhoods on the Southwest Side [Mexican], Devon Avenue going thru North Park on the Far North Side is known for South Asian food/culture, Uptown has a large Ethiopian population and Lake View is where one of the largest gay neighborhoods in the world can be found. Some of the most popular music on offer in the city is the Blues, Jazz, Alternative Rock and Hip-Hop. The city is also the home of House Music and has a large African American population that loves Gospel Music. There are large Mexican and Puerto Rican populations that speak Spanish. The University of Chicago is known for its many Nobel laureates and was the location of the development of the atomic bomb during World War II. It can be found on a beautiful Gothic Revival-style campus in the Hyde Park neighborhood, not far from the Museum of Science and Industry. Some of the other really good museums are the Chicago Art Institute, the Field Museum of Natural History, the Shedd Aquarium, the Planetarium and the Garfield Park Conservatory [a giant Victorina.greenhouse with various rooms based upon world climate zones]. There are also 2 zoos [Lincoln Park Zoo in the Lincoln Park neighborhood along Lake Michigan, and the other is Brookfield Zoo located just west of the city in the suburb of Brookfield. It is the 2nd largest zoo in the USA after the San Diego Zoo]. Upscale shopping can be found along the "Magnificent Mile" on the Near North Side, just across the Chicago River from "The Loop" [Chicago's downtown business district].

It's because it was transcribed by French explorers before the US moved in, and they spelled the sound they were hearing the natives say
But the spelled it in the French way where the last letter is always silent so sticking a silent consonant on the end is needed to make the last vowel get pronounced (by making the vowel no longer be the last letter).
Interestingly this is also the reason that Kansas and Arkansas aren't pronounced the same despite obviously being from the same origin. Both got transliterated by the French but one of them got english-ized assuming the ending 's' in the spelling was meant to be pronounced. The other stayed under French influence a bit longer and kept the silent S pattern.

I grew up in the Chicago suburbs and lived in the city for 10 years. I also lived in NYC for 10 years. If you’re coming from Portugal in December to either city, you will need a whole new wardrobe. I recommend early September as it’s still relatively warm and the tourist season is over. Chicago gets over 60 million visitors a year (NY gets 90 million). The skyscraper was invented in Chicago. The city is like an architectural museum (especially for modernism). The Chicago architecture boat tour is the second most popular tour in the world. Only the Vatican is more popular.
You should look at some Chicago River architectural tour videos (most are too long to react to). The Chicago river is the busiest commercial waterway in the U.S.
Chicago is a cleaner and nicer city than NY. NY is unique in the world. But it is more international. Chicago is probably the most American city.

If you visit Chicago in any season other than winter, the most popular attraction is the boat tour on the Chicago River. Make sure to take the Architecture Center's boat where the docents will give the most fascinating information about the structures rising above you on both sides of the river. A chill, wonderful ninety minutes and a great introduction to the city.

I was born and grew up in Chicago, though I have lived elsewhere (Delaware) for the last 40 years. I still have a real fondness for Chicago, and returning to it now as a visitor I can see all the things that make it special. The architecture really is outstanding. So is the food! And she didn't mention the museums: the Art Institute (some very famous paintings have their home there), a natural-history museum and planetarium and aquarium all close to each other, and the Museum of Science and Industry. And as she said, the location on the west shore of Lake Michigan makes it unique. I highly recommend Chicago.

Chicago invented the skyscraper in 1884. We had a huge fire in 1871 where a third of the city was burned down. We rebuilt the city and started building skyscrapers. This is why Chicago is more modern than other cities in the East. Chicago is called the Second City because it was built twice.

    • @jonadabtheunsightly

Chicago is only in the East, if you divide the whole country into just two pieces, East and West. In which case, yes, Chicago would be in the Eastern half, because it's east of the Mississippi River. But it's nowhere near the Eastern Seaboard, and everything west of the Appalachians was "west" at the time when Chicago was founded.

    • @Ddrhodes123
      @Ddrhodes123 День назад

Chicago was only incorporated as a city in the 1830s so it’s newer than even St. Louis or New Orleans, let alone the Eastern seaboard cities. But as the center of the countries railroads and the economic growth that caused, most of the architecturally impressive buildings are from the 1920s or later - like the Wrigley building shown here or the building the restaurant she was in (Chicago Athletic Association). There’s not much that dates back to 1871.

I lived in Chicago for 25 years and am a native Illinoisian. My Mom lived in Chicago in the 1930's and when I was young, she suggested that myself and my sisters move to Chicago because there were so many things to do. First there is Lake Michigan. Chicago has the best lakefront anywhere. The lake is cold to swim in but it is awesome. The Lincoln Park Zoo is one of the few free zoos left in the country. Downtown Chicago has lots of interesting and diverse restaurants. There is the Museum of Science & Industry; The Art Institute; The Planetarium; The Field Museum; The Chicago History Museum; Museum of Contemporary Art; the DuSable Black History Museum; and many others. Walking in the city is absolutely amazing! Enjoy when you go!

Yes, Christmas lights typically start going up right after Thanksgiving, so by the 5th or so of December, there should be quite a few, pretty much anywhere in America (except for, like, the remote uninhabited wilderness). Some areas have more lights than others, obviously, but even in farm country, some houses will be decorated.

We have our own beaches but we take the train to Chicago for a city fix. 4 hours and $30 on the Blue Water Line and we step out downtown at Union Station. We usually go in early December so I agree about it being a nice time for the reasons the video gave. Be warned, you must have proper outdoor clothing. It’s verrrrrry windy and quite cold. It was raining so hard that there were flash flood warnings all over the area. Since it was raining, there was no view. However, I did get some cool pictures of me floating in the clouds. Our plans after that were to walk the riverfront and take an architectural boat ride to learn about the amazing bulidings downtown. The river walk was flooded so we canceled the boat ride. The thing about Chicago weather is it can vary widely even days apart which makes it hard to plan. The winters are really generally only around freezing but there can be periods where a polar vortex blows down and it’s colder in Chicago than the North Pole. And in the summer, we can get the hot humid weather from the Gulf of Mexico. As I write this, the remnant rains of Hurricane Beryl are coming through. We get caught between cold, dry Canadian weather and hot, humid Gulf weather.

Skip NYC, visit Chicago for the holidays!
Seriously, hands down, the most beautiful time of year!
I was born and raised in Chicago and there is just no place on Earth like it!
I love my city! I miss it every day!
Sure, the bean is ok, but there's so much to do and see in Chicago that is so much more interactive and interesting. The museums in Chicago are absolutely the BEST! There are nearly 100 museums in the city, many of them are actually FREE! Sure, there's "Museum square" which is more like an "L" with the Field Museum, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Adder planetarium, the Shed Aquarium, and the Art Institute (which area all Word Renown!) but there's also so many smaller museums that are ALL "worth it!"
There's food, culture, music, shopping, architecture, history. Chicago is my favorite city, there's just nothing like it.
Yes, Lake Michigan surprises people all the time by how HUGE it really is. People think, "Oh, it's a lake. It can't be all that big." No, it's HUGE and it's Amazing! Walking along the lakefront is one of my favorite things to do. Every time I get to go back to visit, I always walk along one of the beaches. Yes, Chicago has BEACHES! With Sand and everything!
Another Fun Fact about Chicago. If you visit downtown, take a tour of one of the Skydecks (either the Willis Tower or The John Hancock) - what is surprising to most people is that all the skyscrapers are built on a Cantilever system. This means they Sway! They're built this way on purpose! Chicago, the city, was built over a swamp so the ground isn't solid. The cantilever system was designed to allow the buildings to sway in the wind, instead of toppling down.
All major cities have a "Wind tunnel effect" which means winds funnel between the tall buildings and can be pretty strong. The cantilevers allow the buildings to sway slightly, so when you're up in the Skydecks, you can actually FEEL them sway a little!
Also, Chicago is known as "The Windy City" - BUT, it's NOT because of the weather! It was called that by journalists from other cities around the time of the World's Faire (early 1900's) because "The Politicians are full of Hot Air!" LOL
If you visit Chicago for more than a day, I highly recommend getting a "City Pass" these passes allow you to visit some of the more popular destinations for a really discounted price!
Also, don't miss out on THE FOOD! Sure, there's the Deep Dish Pizza (which my favorite is Pequad's) but there's also the iconic Italian Beef sandwiches, Chicago style Hot Dogs, Chicago mix popcorn (a mix of butter, cheese and caramel popcorn), and so much more.
I can't say enough about my city. You just have to experience it!

A large part of the reason Chicago has such great architecture is because of the Fire in the early 1870's and the World's Fair in 1892. The movers and shakers of the city wanted to make it the greatest city so, after a large part of it burned down, they lured the cream of the crop of architects to the city and spared no expense rebuilding. That 20 year span was when the stockyards were thriving and railroads crossed the country. Beef was brought in from the ranches out west, pork from the Iowa farms, and poultry from all over and they were sent out to the cities of the East in the new fangled refrigerated cars. The railroad also brought in grain from Minnesota and the Dakota territories which was sent out East either by rail or by ship on the Lakes. A LOT of money was being made in Chicago and they spent a lot of it to build the city.

Chicagoan reporting in: Cloud Gate (bean) is pretty cool, and so is the park it's in. Chicago is home to many interesting parks, part of an effort to naturalize the city a bit more and introduce more fauna. I used to work downtown by Upper Wacker Drive and Randolph. I'm not sure I have an exact favorite part of the city, there's upsides and downsides on every block. Chicago architecture is very unique, we've even had a type of window named after us. There's a fair amount of mid-century and art deco that has survived through the last 100 years, also with greco-roman influences. If you ever go to Chicago, I recommend these restaurants: Gene and Judes, Lula Cafe, Superkhana International, Green Street Smoked Meats, Birrieria Zaragoza, Staropolska, Vito & Nick's, MCCB, 5 Rabanitos, and Shaw's Crab House.

My parents and I lived there in the early 70s. It's now 505NLake shore drive. Back then the pier was a spooky place. There was a small place to get fish nuggets in a bag, next to the pier. But nothing else . The pier was never locked. Always open gates when I went over to take a walk out to the end of the pier. My first job at 14 was paperboy for the 64 floors of condos and apartments.
