Top tip re helicopters too, but it’s not just emergency helicopters: also watch out for general aviation helicopters being flown badly. I was flying in the Chilterns last week and an R44 came through straight and level at about 50m above ground level and so I had to get my drone out the way very quickly.
Brilliant intro to the drone starter guide, much better than some "professional" guides, as you say it's not supposed to be difficult however some professionals get rules and requirements mixed over the drone rules, I stood in a park the other day watching two guys arguing about the "Rules" and it was clear one was a "professional" and was conflagrating the rules and adding HIS requirements and would not listen to the poor newbie. (I know better I do this for a living) Turned out to be a police officer and until I assisted was threatening confiscation, arrest, etc. Even after the much calmer conversation, he was insistent that rules were being broken. It was a pity as it spoiled what was a dad enjoying the day with his boys 😥

Good content and is very concise. I am thinking of getting a DJI Pro 3, but I am a little nervous about all the rules in the UK that's has stopped me from getting one up until now!
Really pleased i can a cross this video , answered all the questions i have been thinking about.... cheers as my mini 2 is arriving tomorrow , updrade from the spark
Great video and really useful info for those starting out and a gentle reminder to more seasoned drone pilots. I was interested to hear you include the Air Ambulance and common sense should kick in when these are around but it may be useful to know that the general aviation rule when two aircraft are heading straight towards each other at the same height is to break right. That's what an Air Ambulance (or any other aircraft) is going to do in this situation but landing immediately should be your first action on hearing another aircraft close by.
I gave up flying drones, some years ago. The reason being that I was often accosted by members of the public telling me that “You can’t fly drones here”. I knew the rules, and was doing nothing wrong. One guy even threatened me that if I didn’t land my drone, he’d do it for me. Drones seem to be an emotive subject for many people. I am considering getting a mini 3. Hopefully I won’t run into too many Karens.. 🙄
I used to work at RAF Lossiemouth many years ago. I’d be surprised if an Air Ambulance would be transiting at the same height that drones fly at. And would even be able to see a Mini 2 or Mini 3. Birdstrikes would be a bigger risk to helicopters.
Thanks for the video, I decided to take the flyer ID test even though I fly the DJI mini 2 because it was really useful to know what the regulations are and it is free
Trust the UK to have a £10 annual charge for a operator ID which basically serves no purpose other than to make easy money. Service should be free, thanks for the guide very helpful
I have the mini 3pro and if I have set my return to home at 150ft and when it’s time to come home (ie battery low ) if at that time the drone is at say 350ft it will not descend to 150ft but come home at the height it’s ,if it’s less it will go up to that height to come home
Hey Steve! There are actually a couple of changes depending on whether or not the flight is under an Operational Authorisation and therefore impact take off and landing. Also, legislation dictates you must have EC compliant insurance etc. So we kept this hobbyist focused.
Emergency service helicopters don't normally have ADSB fitted, maybe this is a question for your next chat with the CAA. New DJI drones have the ADSB facility and can now see on coming planes equipped with ADSB, so surly all emergency helicopter should be fitted accordingly. I think the idea of ADSB is to make planes/helicopters to stand out and be safe, so make this happen to all aviation, like it is in the States. This happened to me recently where an ambulance helicopter landed about 500ft away from where i was just about to take off.the ADSB facility on the drone would have warned me.Luckily i didn't take off as i heard the helicopter at the last minute as it approach at low level. All i am pushing for is the aviation sector needs to all have ADSB fitted.
@@Geeksvana what would be the punishment? Fine, registration loss? Would I be persecuted only if caught in the action, or the fact that I’m logged to my account will alert the authorities?
Hey iPedal! That kind of flight would bring criminal prosecution these days, so it would be serious in financial and criminal terms. The authorities have the ability to look back at flights and counter drone tech these days is more advanced than many people realise. My suggestion would be booking a holiday in a country that allows in certain areas. Although that's a small list these days!
jeez.. sooooo much better than australias rules. :( im coming to uk from australia, do i need to register my drone with your uk authority? fantastic, clear concise video btw!
Really helpful. Thank you. I am from Thailand and will be bringing the family on a holiday to the UK this October and was wondering if it is possible to bring my Autel Nano+ (under 250g). Your video answers this question. I will try and get my Flyer ID before I leave for the UK.
I’m completely new to drones and can’t wait to get started. My mini 3 pro is in order from DJI. I was getting a bit confused as to what I had to read or register for but this explained perfectly. Thank you 👍
Question: What's going to happen with Mini 3 pro in regards to the classes by the end of this year (or 2023?) since it's not class certified yet? Will we be allowed to fly it close to people either for fun or for work with A2 CofC course, or it will fall into A3 category and get lost?
Very useful summary but I received a more disturbing definition of VLOS for my C0 M4P from the CAA. They told me that while a fleeting glance at my RC screen to check instrumentation was allowed, I could not pilot my drone even for a short distance via the RC screen without enlisting the help of a co-pilot/observer.
One of the issues we face as recreational drone users, is the 'advice' offered by the CAA. Although much of it is well intentioned and working to their goal of sage use, it is often far away from the legislation itself. We have to choose whether we will fly within their guidance and have that protection legally, of sorts, or instead fly within legislation and stand alone in court to explain our actions.
@@Geeksvana - fair point: the CAA don't make the laws (although they obviously influence them as a consultee). But I would prefer not to have to worry that the busybody filming me might be about to report me for looking at my screen for 5 seconds - or even for landing my drone manually. There are so many scenarios that require a more pragmatic interpretation of the law than the CAA's total ban on piloting the drone via the RC.
Very good video. I was reading it is allowed to take a drone onboard many flights with it having a small battery I am due to fly soon will be airports be informed.
It actually says if it’s under 250 grams with a camera you need a flyer ID. Maybe it’s changed since recording of this video. Edit: my mistake and corrected
@@Geeksvana just checked and my mistake ! I must’ve misread that a few days ago and then went and got a flyer ID 😂 at least my mistake and now I’m a little bit more educated on drones 😂
I’m glad I’ve taken it and it does give you better knowledge and understanding. Your videos have been fantastic as a new beginner gaining knowledge through them as well. It’s good to have the flyer ID card to at least show you know something. You should create your own flyer ID the fountain of knowledge for the sub 250 class of drones 😂
Im sure you have covered this in other videos. You mention the height restriction of 400ft Above Ground Level (AGL). When planning a flight keep in mind that drone thinks ground level is where it took off. If your RTH height is set to 50 meters, but you fly up a hill to investigate a cliff or waterfall and lose signal, the drone will descend to 50 meters at its location before trying to return home, potentially dropping it right into the trees or ground. Yes, speaking from experience... Didnt violate any flight rules, still had to hike up a mountain to recover drone.
Thanks Alistair! If you are flying commercially with the Mini 3 without GVC etc, then the only added thing you need is commercial insurance. Hope this helps.
Great video as always Sean. Is there anywhere you can download a short list of the main rules so I can keep them to hand if approached by a member of the public or authority?
I’ve found that everywhere I look, the page talks about 25kg drones, 500g too. And then 249g. This is annoying because you can’t share that with people, as they’ll talk in a ‘general’ sense rather than specifically regarding
excellent advice Sean as usual I wonder if we can get liability insurance for a small drone just incase it does harm someone's property or person ill have to look in to that. Well it's been confirmed my mini 3 has been dispatched so looking forward to this. are you getting the mini 3 my friend. 😁👌🇬🇧

Wiser rules in UK..Here in Finland you have to register if:The weight is over 250..OR if it has a camera?????Can't understand what a camera has to do with safety...
Flying in mist and fog is extremely important. I flew in a light fog once thinking it would be fine but even light mist can quickly cover the camera in specks of water making it very difficult to see
I just sent mine up, just got it, first ever drone. Was quite disconcerting to be honest how quickly I could make it shoot off and it quickly gets to the stage where it’s almost out of view. I put my unboxing and first flight on my channel.
They need to hurry up and allow other apps on the RC so that we can put drone assist and UAV forecast on it UAV has a problem apparently they have updated to include the BeiDou satellites and it works on android and on the website but Apple have not used any of the dates that he sent to them so if you’re using an iPhone or an iPad you do not get the BeiDou satellites option
I have a a flyer ID for my mini 2 I recently bought a mini 3 can you advice if I should get a operator ID again or will the first one I did cover me. Great video
I got the Mini 3 so I can conveniently bring a drone to my travels. For everyone else like me, it helps to have this kind of resource about drone regulations in other regions.
you cannot fly FPV and keep to the rules, yes you can have a spotter but the spotter also needs to understand rules and how many people take there other half that has no idea about rules and are elected the spotter, ever way no matter what you fly just fly safely, side note flying and crashing in the snow is cool
Hi Thank you for information 😁 Do you know what happened if you broke the rules? And what about the places where drones are not allowed? What about drones under 250?
What's been your experience with flying in central London particularly in areas like Tower Bridge/The Thames? Have you run into the law, have they forced you away? Are places like Buckingham Palace (not over the building) allowed to be filmed?
Those areas all have airspace restrictions around them anyway. As does then entire City of London. I was scratching my head watching the footage in this video because it looks inside R158 (which does extend past the south bank of the Thames opposite the City) - but it's sometimes hard to tell with drone footage and there is a small gap between 158 and 157. Flying in R158 is a big nono, ditto R157, then south of that you have the London Heliport (and you have City Airport to the east making things worse) - so yeah, huge swath of London is unflyable without permission specifically from NATS; you can do it, they have a website for it and that may be the case for the footage in this video and that just shows how fraught things like this can be.
Question : I have a dji mini 3 pro as it comes with the battery 249 g, I watched your video and when on the website did the theory and passed the test . I have to put the operator id in the drone and have my flyer id with me . im flying for recreation only so I don't need an insurance for that drone. question : what would be the next step ? is uk civil aviation authority , proof of completion valid anywhere to fly in Europe ? at the bottom it says a1 &a3 open sub category. ps: what's your location maybe we meet one day in march because im flying to Europe I don't have any friends there !
Great video, thank you. If flying a sub 250g drone, taking off and landing from a safe public space - are you allowed to fly over private property/land even if the private property/land has "no drone flying" signs on their land - obviously, not flying within a NFZ or NOTAM area. The drone code point 8 says you have to follow signage? Does that mean everyone can just put up a sign to prevent drone users?
Hey Martin! The Drone Code is an excellent form of guidance. But it is just that, guidance. The legislation is often a little different. Overall, the quick answer is you are fine to fly over private land, even if they do not want you there, unless there is a specific restriction or legislation to stop you. The longer answer… In England and Wales, any landowner can stop activity on their land. So if I did not want you operating a drone ‘from’ the land, I have the right to ask you to stop etc. This is usually, depending on how you respond, a civil matter and not related to CAA rules. It is important to check if the sign is backed up by a bylaw or specific legislation. If it is, the sign should have this noted in the corner in small text, this is a good way to see if the sign is just a home print job! You can fly over private land but should be aware that recovering the drone might be more difficult if you are already aware the landowner does not want you there. Being REALLY pedantic, it could be argued that flying somewhere you know you are not wanted COULD be a safety issue. I produced a video as a guide in terms of council powers over drone flight and take off permissions came up a few times. It also features input from a Barrister, (I am not legally qualified), so it could help you: ruclips.net/video/BLIh67wg1wg/видео.html Hope this helps. Throw me an email if I have got the wrong end of the stick - sean@geeksvana.com.
Very liberal rules in the UK for sub 250 drones ! In France (and probably many other countries) built-up areas are off limit regardless of the weight as well as flying above people !
How can this be about safety when you can legally track yourself unlited distance with virtually zero control over the drone but going over 500m is considered dangerous. Looking at the rules alone it seems it looks more like someone does not want ramge of consumer drones to be over 500m
I live near Stanstead airport, is there any restrictions for theses areas or is there somewhere I can find out? Great video for the novice like me, that’s if my mini 3 ever arrives 🙈.
What happens if your drone does weigh just over 250g if, for example, you use a bigger battery? How would this get discovered, what would happen if it did, and are there any extra steps you can take to still be within the law? As a complete novice thinking about going for the mini pro 3 these are the things I am struggling to find answers to. Thanks for a very informative video!
I use a gimbal guard which is like a mould of the front on my M3P it’s really light I’d say 3Gram my skin hides about 90% of it, luckily scales aren’t part of the polices uniform and their mostly misinformed anyway iv found, they should give u leeway for a light at least I’m not sure what they weight the mini2 was 137g but I know this heavier I think 147g a strobon Cree weighs 4g there should be a little flexibility for safety objects
Hey! At events and sensitive locations tracking technology will show a precise path of flight. Often issues will only be looked into if there is a problem or incident which would involve the flight data of the drone either from the device or via the manufacturer.
Excellent introduction for a first time drone owner as to what the law requires. Delivered clearly and succinctly. A real help. Thanks Sean, much appreciated.

Thanks geeksvana
They need to hurry up and allow other apps on the RC so that we can put drone assist and UAV forecast on it UAV has a problem apparently they have updated to include the BeiDou satellites and it works on android and on the website but Apple have not used any of the dates that he sent to them so if you’re using an iPhone or an iPad you do not get the BeiDou satellites option
I think that would be a great idea Mark. Being able to check the apps from the RC seems sensible!
I have a a flyer ID for my mini 2 I recently bought a mini 3 can you advice if I should get a operator ID again or will the first one I did cover me. Great video
Thanks for the kind feedback! The same Operator ID covers all the drones you own, just need to renew it once a year 😎.
Great as always Sean
Thank you! Really appreciate your kind support!
@@Geeksvana did you get the wee drone vid i sent you a while back?
I got the Mini 3 so I can conveniently bring a drone to my travels. For everyone else like me, it helps to have this kind of resource about drone regulations in other regions.
you cannot fly FPV and keep to the rules, yes you can have a spotter but the spotter also needs to understand rules and how many people take there other half that has no idea about rules and are elected the spotter, ever way no matter what you fly just fly safely, side note flying and crashing in the snow is cool
Hi
Thank you for information 😁
Do you know what happened if you broke the rules? And what about the places where drones are not allowed? What about drones under 250?
Thank you 👍
As always Sean, thanks so much for the Chanel and up to date video. Take care.
Great and comprehensive video. Very helpful. Thank you
Thank you Gareth! Really appreciate it!
As far as I can see I can’t fly at all out of eye sight is crazy
Question : I have a dji mini 3 pro as it comes with the battery 249 g, I watched your video and when on the website
did the theory and passed the test .
With the mavic mini can I fly close to buildings ? I understand there is no minimum distance
Hye Brittmatt81! You can as long as safe etc etc and you are careful re privacy etc. Separation is based on people only.
You explained the rules very clearly - thanks!
The longer answer…
In England and Wales, any landowner can stop activity on their land.
It also features input from a Barrister, (I am not legally qualified), so it could help you:

Hope this helps. Throw me an email if I have got the wrong end of the stick - sean@geeksvana.com.
Very liberal rules in the UK for sub 250 drones ! In France (and probably many other countries) built-up areas are off limit regardless of the weight as well as flying above people !
Subscribed.
Thanks for the info,,,can you tell us what micro sd card you can use in the Mini 3 pro and the DJI-RC Thank you Tim
Big help! Thanks! I am expecting my Mini 3 by the end of the month.
How can this be about safety when you can legally track yourself unlited distance with virtually zero control over the drone but going over 500m is considered dangerous.
Looking at the rules alone it seems it looks more like someone does not want ramge of consumer drones to be over 500m
Because no one can effectively see a sub 250 gm drone, 400 feet in the air, at 500 metres and drone flights have to be kept in visual range.
@@barrieshepherd7694 and why do they need to be within visual range again?
I live near Stanstead airport, is there any restrictions for theses areas or is there somewhere I can find out? Great video for the novice like me, that’s if my mini 3 ever arrives 🙈.
As always SOUND advise.
How do “they” determine if you’re flying over a crowd and not a few metres to the side?
Hey! At events and sensitive locations tracking technology will show a precise path of flight. Often issues will only be looked into if there is a problem or incident which would involve the flight data of the drone either from the device or via the manufacturer.
