- Barrie Schwortz, an Orthodox Jew, spends much of his time educating Christians that the Turin Shroud may well be an artifact of Jesus. An expert on imaging, he was the official documenting photographer for the Shroud of Turin Research Project (STURP), the 1978 team that conducted the first in-depth scientific examination of the Shroud. In 2009, he founded the Shroud of Turin Education and Research Association, Inc. (STERA, Inc.). Schwortz began as a skeptic of the shroud, but by scientific evidence became absolutely convinced of its authenticity. To be open-minded and brave enough to immerse oneself in the evidence of beliefs that go against your own, and allow yourself to be convinced of their validity, requires a courage and honesty that not many can claim. This is what Barrie Schwortz has been doing for the past 30 years.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Barrie Schwortz died on the 21st of June after a short illness. I had the privilege of spending time on-line talking with him. Sadly, I never met him in person.
He had a way of making you feel you were someone of real importance. I am sure that in the course of his lectures and interviews he met and spoke to thousands of people about the Shroud of Turin.There are other experts on the Shroud but there will only ever be one Barrie Schwortz.

Although Mr. Barrie Shwortz isn’t the traditional speaker, I have to admit, there’s a huge lesson his message sent and am grateful for his entire vocation into this experience. Blessings to all.
This guy is going around completely understating the strength of the evidence. William Guy phd, md does a much better job.
For example, an Italian team spent five years using the world’s most powerful eximer laser, and could not reproduce the image. They estimate it would take a pulse lasting one forty billionth of a second of uv radiation on the order of *several billion watts of power* Clearly, obviously supernatural. Cannot be done by modern man. Probably the single most amazing part of the shroud. It broke the carbon bonds of the top layer of the fibrals, turning them into double-bonds.

Seems to be a story about himself rather than the shroud. Not sure why, he seems very full of himself.

I still have an article out of Readers Digest back in 1970 that my mother-in-law gave me on the Shroud of Turin. I knew immediately that the Shroud was authentic. God is totally amazing to me, how He chose Barrie to be on that team. He used a Jewish boy that did not believe to become a top expert on the Shroud, who has gone on to make it his life's work. How amazing is that!

I was privileged to have seen the shroud with my own 2 eyes in 2002. My main impression at the time was how BIG it was. I was not expecting that. The other was how faint the markings were. The images we see of it in books and on the internet apparently enhance the contrast. I recall not being then convinced about its authenticity, but have over the years since come to the opinion that it is indeed the burial cloth of Jesus. As Barrie Schwortz said on this video, quoting Sherlock Holmes, "When every other possibility has been rejected, whatever remains - however improbable - must be the truth."
The image on the Shroud is very faint, as you saw in person. Almost all of the images that you see in books or online are photographic negatives of the image. The image on the Shroud is itself a "negative", which is why in 1898 when it was photographed for the first time, the photographer was astounded when he saw the very clear image of Christ on his negatives in his dark room.

Thank you Barry. I was the custodian at St Alphonsus parish in Seattle in the early 2000’s when you made your presentation to our congregation. I have never forgotten your conviction as you told your story. My faith has never wavered, but your scientific evidence added to my belief that faith and reason are not only compatible, but are necessarily unified in the understanding of life. Thank you for your part in this wonderful examination of the Shroud.

The first time I heard Barry give his testimony and evidence of the Shroud it went deep into my soul.I knew about the Shroud but not the testing and personal testimony.I am now deep into it all and my faith has been fortified immensely.

In the end days there will be only 2 churches, the true church of Christ and followers of the false christ. The true church of Christ will be recognized because it will love God, love their fellow human beings and they will keep the commandments of God. This is the whole duty of man.

I've got a testimony to tell,just before I started watching this video,I was watching several videos about atheism,science and the like, somehow I noticed this Ted talk in the thumbnails,usually I skip such topics but something inside of me prompted me to click on it, I come from a mixed Jewish/catholic background,raised Catholic with a love for Jewish culture I've always had an identity crisis,who/what am I? My belief in a higher power is weak to say the least but after listening to this talk, I'm sure it was God pushing my index finger towards that thumbnail. Thanks for taking the time to read my rambling.

telling the truth....it has been carbon dated by multiple independent sources to the 13 th century....each getting to within 50 years of each other....the fiber it was made of came a 1000 years later.....its not the shroud worn by jesus

@@ЛеонидФедяков-ъ9я The man IS an expert on the shroud of Turin, but this presentation is rather a testimony to the authenticity and truth of the Christian faith. So like he said, he just presents the facts and it’s up to the person to accept it or not. It’s between you and God. If you want to know more, you can go to one of his lectures and listen to what he has to say about the shroud of Jesus.
You cannot force people into accepting a religion, that is the job of the Spirit of God who dwells in each one of us and it’s up to us to listen to his/her voice speaking to us.

The Shroud of Turin also proves He was resurrected -- the image itself was produced by an "unknown light" and the image proves the body was levitating erect when it was made on the Shroud of Turin and the Shroud of Turin was no longer touching the body, but a distance away, to produce the 3-d image. The blood on the Shroud of Turin matches the blood of Eucharistic Miracles when the "Consecrated Host becomes the Body and Blood and 'Living Heart' of Jesus Christ."
The Shroud is beyond the understanding of science. That's a good way of putting it!

I am so blessed to learn of this research from Barrie himself , of the true investigation from these top scientists attesting to the shroud's veracity. I was inside the Garden Tomb in 1977. There l believe is evident it being empty and near to Jeremiah's grotto where Ron Wyatt discovered the erk of the covenant with Jesus blood trickled upon the mercy seat from the crack caused by the earth quake at Golgotha above where Jesus the Lamb of God suffered and bled and died for our sins...angels were present and had Ron take scraping of the blood to be analysed AB + 24 chromasomes from the mother and one from the Heavenly Father God the blood mixed in saline solution 24 hrs. As instructed by angels was alive ...this is the blood of your Messiah!!!

@@davidcross4815 no. The carbon dating was taken from a piece of the shroud that was restored. Scientists have proven there is NO WAY we can duplicate this image. Even with today's technology. It was made by extremely high amounts of radiation, it was made by the words of GOD THE FATHER telling his SON to rise again just as JESUS told Lazarus to come forth. You should really study the subject before you state false facts. Plus the blood on the shroud is alive! ALIVE! How can you explain that? Watch some documentaries about the things Ron Wyatt found before his death. I hope you come to the truth. Which is JESUS CHRIST. HE is the way, the truth, and the life. No one goes to the FATHER except through HIM. I pray the HOLY SPIRIT guides you to the correct information to open your eyes to JESUS. This presentation is from 2013, based on an examination in 1978. It has been thoroughly debunked several times since, and Ted should probably remove it from the library. The latest study was in 2018 by a UK university and thoroughly disproves the whole thing.

The Lord told me years ago to stop watching television. He told me it was being used to harden the hearts of Americans. I have since been shocked at the things that have been airing, per report, on television.
You might want to research about subliminal programming and other ways the television is being used so that the one who is being programmed is you.

You cited scientist from last century and ignored the plethora of scientists in many fields and the last two decades who show why the initial carbon 14 testing dates were inaccurate. In fact, the very inventor of carbon 14 testing said that those test results were not accurate due to contamination. You can see him saying that in the video called Jesus and the Shroud of Turin.
You can paste that little post all over the Internet. But you can’t answer my questions. And you can’t make the truth go away.
Why miss out? Why not embrace the truth instead of fighting it?

We can see from the responses here that in spite of the earlier studies that showed the shroud to be a fake, many people are desperate to believe that it confirms the divinity of Jesus Christ and are determined to seek any trivial excuse to do so. You are either laughing at these people or making a buck off of them or both. Would you be willing to publically support retesting since the testing methods have become so much more sensitive?

Always - Type AB.There have been many Eucharistic Miracles over the Centuries. In the 19th and 20 Century, the "Blood" is Real Blood and has been found to be Real Heart Tissue that has been put under Tremendous Stress. Ignore the facts if you must folks....Stubborn Denial (I will not study the facts) is not a ignitable excuse come the judgement....

He also gave all kinds of information about the shroud. For example, the fact there was billirubin found in the blood, which keeps it red because of extreme torture.
If you want to see what I personally think is hands-down, the best video on the shroud, I think the one by Brian Cray is the best. There you will see all kinds of scientific and historical data that show that the shroud is no way, and could not possibly be, a Medieval forgery.
Barry gives far more scientific and historic details in other videos. He only had a short time to talk at TEDx.

It’s mechanical operation; you press a button, a mirror flips up, light from the object in focus passes through, strikes the film. That’s it. No options, feelings, thoughts, or religion involved. You claim that “he also gave all kinds of information about the shroud, and again, only mentioned the one thing I mentioned. Where are “all” the other supporting bits of “evidence”???? It may not be a “medieval forgery,” but there is NO way it can be linked to a particular man (that many not even have existed). There is no “Jesus DNA.” That cloth (if it’s real) could have been wrapped around any of 10, 000 men. Come on-exhibit at least a modicum of logic.

Scientists have said there is no way to reproduce it even with modern technology. And of course you yourself, dear, couldn’t reproduce it, or even guess how it could be reproduced.
When Christ was alive on earth, many saw him doing miracles, but not all believed. He left a humongous miracle for us in his resurrection. He gives you the chance to believe. Even now with miracles. But if you reject him, how very sad for you.

I had a friend who was Muslim, and we had great conversations about our faiths!🥰 She believed that Jesus was a very Holy Prophet and honoured Him at Christmas time also. She also believed in the Holiness of Our Lady. These are steps to be well respected, and I embrace anyone who is halfway there! God brings you all the way to Himself! Every year, I try to practice a Seder meal on Holy Thursday, to remember how Jesus and the disciples would have, how important this ceremony was to them, but also how the early Christians, many of whom were Jewish people, would have continued the Seder meal. That is how the Holy Catholic Mass evolved!🥰
@Russell Weber III No. I tell from my own experiences, like most people. Yes, Jesus is THE ONLY Pascal Lamb, but as Christians, it is very important to know the roots of our faith, especially the Last Supper, and what it meant to the Disciples and Jesus.
All I know is, that practicing the Seder alongside attending Mass on Holy Thursday is a powerful experience for me, and really helps me appreciate the mystery and sanctity of the Holy sacrifice of the Mass.
If you are not Catholic, this may not make sense, but the Seder is the precursor to The Mass, or "Sharing at the Table of the Lamb".

THE SHROUD IS A LIE. #1 The BIBLE gave proof that Jesus had his beard torn off his face: "I offered My back to those who struck Me, & My cheeks to those who tore out My beard ". Mat 26:67 #2 John 20:5-7 5 "Peter went straight into the tomb [where] he saw the strips of linen ...as well as the 'cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus' head'. #3 Jesus was stripped of his clothing, tied to a post & beaten until his flesh hung in shreds. Isa 52:14 "Just as there were many who were appalled at him because his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being & his form marred beyond human likeness" Jesus no longer looked like a 'man'. He was a mass off shredded blood & skin. The shroud would have been soaked in blood covering a distorted body not resembling a human. #4 This is the 2nd Commandment of God: "You shall not make any graven image, or 'any likeness' of any thing that is 'in heaven' above" Ex 20:3 Jesus is the only sinless being who walked the earth, therefore He obeyed all ten Commandments. Jesus would never, ever sin against His Father in Heaven, so Jesus would never, ever have allowed himself to be grafted into a piece of cloth to resemble a graven image.
This adorable man has made a whole career out of this! Thank God his parents left Poland prior to WW2. It’s his skepticism that helps prove its authenticity.

Mr. Barry is obviously very intelligent and seemingly honest. I respect his position and his right to believe. What I don’t understand is how the shroud is still up for debate. One doesn’t have to be a scientist or subject matter expert to detect a fatal flaw. If a person were to take a bed sheet or material that is similar to the shroud, apply a thin layer of paint, then carefully wrap their face with the sheet, and then unwrap they would realize that the profile of their face would be greatly distorted. The shroud has a profile that resembles a picture or portrait. The shroud of Turin was not wrapped around a persons face.

I just saw the documentary on the shroud of Turin and all the scientific doubters who were present and worked on the shroud became believers not by faith but by evidence that their carbon dating was flawed and disproved by 2 religious people they called lunatics

All the scientific studies I've read on it, say it's far too new to be authentic.
I watched it too. They interwove 2 different fibers from different timeframes
They have faith in the evidence, not 'faith in faith,' which id fideism and mere credulity. Thomas demonstrated this when he saw the risen Christ who enjoined (us) that historical testimony from reliable witnesses is a form of evidence and ought not be discounted. (Remember Occam and Sherlock from the talk.)
There not much left of a future but education on this now is truly valuable. Barry’s testimony is very valuable to the ‘truth’.

Absolutely fabulous presentation. He is a very interesting speaker and a great advocate for the Shroud's authenticity.
I am one of the skeptics Schwortz was talking about. Even if the blood on the shroud is authentic blood, there is no guarantee that it was christ's blood. A photographer in the 1970s published an in article in one of the photography mags that he had duplicated the method in which the shroud had been reproduced. He said he used the spices & dressings which were traditionally used in early AD, and draped the cloth over a supine stone effigy. After three days, he photographed the image which had transferred onto the fabric, and he published the images. They resembled the shroud's ghostly image.
I googled the shroud of Turin: Historical and scientific evidence points to it being a medieval creation [that is, well beyond the time of christ's burial]. It [the shroud] is first securely attested in 1390, when a local bishop wrote that the shroud was a forgery and that an unnamed artist had confessed; radiocarbon dating of a sample of the fabric is consistent with this date.
The lecturer may believe--and belief is not proof--that the shroud at one time covered christ, but I don't.
It is OK to be a sceptic. The Church itself has never declared that it IS the Shroud that Jesus was wrapped in. It does know that the Shroud Points to CHrist which is the most important thing. Prehaps that is why we have it. Authentic or Not. You need to Update your facts and see if they still match your old information. Don't close your mind yet!

@@joebrinson5040: I've done all the research on "the shroud" that I need to do. It is patently fraudulent, and there is no benefit to be gained from "researching" beyond that point. The shroud has the same validity as bleeding or weeping icons of mary, "fragments of the true cross," pieces of the ark, bones of the saints, or any other religious relics that were routinely sold during the benighted advent of christ's supposed emergence as the savior of mankind. Here's what Google has to say about the shroud:
"The first possible historical record dates from 1353 or 1357, and the first certain record (in Lirey, France) in 1390 when Bishop Pierre d'Arcis wrote a memorandum to Pope Clement VII (Avignon Obedience), stating that the shroud was a forgery and that the artist had confessed." This "shroud" was manufactured over 1300 years after X supposedly died. BUT: You can probably buy one of X's sandals on eBay if you act now, while supplies last. When you get the sandal, be sure to check the size to be sure it's authentic; he had small feet. Size 8. And make sure it wasn't made in China.
The man was beaten in his face, scourged with roman whips, crowned with thorns as though mocking his messianic claims, pierced with a roman spear, his bones were not broken like other crucifixion wictims, then he was buried in a beautiful linen cloth which was unthinkable for a criminal, he was laid in a grave in Jerusalem surrounded by flowers from that specific place, etc. there are so many facts about the suffering of the man on the shroud, that it ALL combined only fits one account: that of the suffering of Jesus of Nazareth. The fact that jews took the actual bloodstained cloth out of the grave is in itself a proof that something is special, because jews would never do such a thing, touching a dead man. Still denying that all these proofs don't point to one particular man and one particular instant in history, can only be an act of the will: Some people will not accept facts because of a fear they have. They themselves know the nature of this fear.
And the Jews hated Him so much, they buried Him FACE DOWN. Might want to mention that.
L.M. McCormick Joseph of Arimathea buried Christ, not “the Jews”.
His disciple Joseph wrapped him in the shroud and placed him in the cave so the fact that it was a nice piece if linen points to nothing other than he was entombed with care by a friendly party

19:00 "How did I become an expert on the Shroud?" This sounds like a version of Survivor bias. How did my puppy end up in my home? He'll never know. He'll never understand or comprehend the intricate details that led to me adopting him.
But I will this: the Shroud is the only piece of evidence out there that I in anyway hold as a possibly authentic link to any metaphysical claim.

there is no way that the Shroud is fake ! , no chance. God left gave us this amazing artefact for our era because we are the only ones who are able to study it so it was made for us because we need it most .
