In between spyro 4 and its god of war reboot, there was another game called Spyro A Heroes Tail. I would recommend checking it out.
But Heroes Tale was the worst one.

Anyone else remember that tunnel thing in the water level; the one you had to swim down at high speed and hit all the enemies to get the egg. It took me about fifteen tries to finish that.

Played through all the three Spyros with my girlfriend last year and I think that we enjoyed them even more than when we were kids. It's not only nostalgia, they are very solid PS1 games.
