Ranked systems only have 3 types of players. 40% are people who you easily obliterate, 40% are people who easily obliterate you, and 10% are people of your skill level where you fight and it’s a great time for both parties no matter who wins or loses.
Edit: and apparently there’s the 10% that can’t do basic math, that’s the category I fall into

It's because Bronze is generally speaking full of people who don't know what they're doing but don't know that they don't know what they're doing so often times the game is decided on a coin toss, if you're lucky you'll win enough coin tosses to get out of bronze but most of us aren't that lucky.

dont forget the part where the game purposefully matches you against players with WAY better records than you, so it's almost guaranteed that you'll derank, probably more than once, and then the game will allow you to play against people with similar records again, so you rank up again, and then the cycle repeats.
it's never "match me against the people in this rank with similar records to mine".
it's always "match me against the literal best players in the world that happen to be in this rank, because they started a 43rd side account so they dont have to play against other top players".

After almost 20 wins with an almost 2.0 KD in Halo Infinite trying to climb from Diamond 6 to Onyx, all it took was two losses to send me back to Diamond 5, absolute insanity. Took like 15+ wins with a 3.0 K/D to finally go from Diamond 6 to Onyx and I was never touching Ranked again, absolute hell to play. And don't even get me started on Overwatch. Words cannot describe how infuriating it is to hard carry your team every match and have that have zero impact on how much SR you gain / lose. Napoleon: Total War is an old game with a very small pool of available players. It can take 15 minutes, 30 minutes, maybe even an hour to get enough players for a 2 vs. 2 match (!). And yet, I've seen people straight-up kick players for having "one star" from ranked battles. The last time I played ranked, the enemy player just set up a battery of 16 cannons on a flat field and won automatically. So I lost a star. Went from 4 to 3.
The ranked system of the game is actively killing the playerbase 😅

For whatever reason promo matches are always when you get the worst teams imaginable, people going afk, leaving the game, going 0/8 in first 5 minutes and all that nonsense.
In games like that there's nothing you can do about having a bad team, even if you're support main like myself who's entire playstyle revolves around making others in your team better.

This reminds me a bit of the ranking in Starcraft 2, not really sure how they could mess their matchmaking up so badly but I ended up being a Gold rank player being matched up with almost exclusively high Platinum and Diamond ranked players(some silly ~85% of matches) and winning more than I lost.
Am I crazy thinking that if you are playing against a certain rank then you should BE that rank as well?
Anyways, this is way back when Starcraft 2 was released but it really put me off playing ranked since it didnt feel like the game knew wtf it was doing and was expecting me to constantly win against 1 or even 2 full rank tiers above my own before being promoted and just as in this video, a single loss seemed to counteract multiple wins for the actual promotion but I was still constantly fighting much higher ranked players either way.
Not sure if it makes things worse or not but later in a new 'season' I was instantly made Diamond after the 5 or so qualifying games... thanks I guess.

Depending on the game and how it's ranking system works, you can encounter quite a few different types of opponents. For the purposes of this comment, let's assume the hypothetical game in question allows you to lower your rank through consecutive losses, has a player level/gear system, and features 1v1 gameplay. There can be some overlap in the different types of players.
Type 1 - New player. These are almost exclusively encountered in lower ranks, and are somewhat rare if the game is popular due to the game already being saturated with players who know what they are doing. Everyone is this type at some point, however. One can typically stop being considered new when they get the gist of how the gameplay works and start being able to play at a slightly more advanced level such as being able to pull off more than one mildly advanced combo.
Type 2 - Average player. These are players who know what they are doing, but aren't rocking exceptionally high stats or skills. They play the game for fun, but it's probably not their entire life.
Type 3 - Laggy player. This is a player who lives far away from you, or who simply just has crappy internet, or both. Trying to fight against these players is a real pain, and you're more likely to run out of time than you are to KO each other if your stats are similar.
Type 4 - Intentionally laggy player. These are players who will play normally some of the time, but then will intentionally cut their internet for a second to lag themselves out of your attacks/combos.
Type 5 - Hacker. These come in two flavors: Super powered, and super nerfed. Super powered hackers are the most common, and are hacking simply to win every match. Super nerfed hackers on the other hand are hacking specifically to lose every match, usually with the intention of recording the footage and then getting other players banned, which makes them potentially far worse. On rare occasions, you can encounter a super powered hacker that is much more subtle with their boosted abilities, making it harder to prove their guilt.
Type 6 - Endgame player. These are players rocking max level characters with as close to the best gear they can manage to obtain, making their character as bustedly overpowered as possible. You typically cannot encounter these in ordinary fighting games, but many MMO's (Such as Elsword) and mobile games (such as Mega Man X DiVE) do feature gameplay systems that allow for them to exist. If you aren't rocking similar stats on your character, you might as well just let them beat you to get it over with. Encountering someone like this, you know that either the game is their entire life or they have a heavy wallet. Usually the latter, though if they also have mad skills then you can probably safely assume it's the former.
Type 7 - Deranker. These are players who could easily count as Average or even Endgame players normally, but who simply refuse to fight you. They are trying to lose on purpose so that their rank will go down and they can rise back up the ranks again later.
Type 8 - Favors. These are similar to Derankers, except they are losing on purpose for a different reason. Rather than lowering their own rank, they are letting you win to help you get yours up, or to help complete a daily quest, or etc.

My hope was that in ranked games people would at least give their best to try to win no matter if they hate you or not - I was very wrong, but there was a slight difference, so I kept it up.
People wouldn't leave the matches anymore because they were afraid of getting a penalty for that, and if you can manage to mute them and keep your own sanity in check, in the end multiplayer team games can still be fun - when you are lucky :D

ranked changes you as a person for better or worse.
it's a test of your mental. it's a constant grind. allow me to share some wisdom.
does losing feel like shit? like a punishment?
    - now you'll have to spend even more time to "progress"?
    - it wasn't your fault, it was your team's fault or the game's fault?
does winning feel hollow and empty?
    - you should be higher rank anyway?
    - you'll probably get a forced loss streak soon?
does queueing make you feel anxious?
    - what if my team thinks i'm bad?
    - what if i don't perform optimally?
*ranked feels frustrating because games are terrible at telling you where you need to do better.*
people will judge and categorize you off your rank, and people will say your rank doesn't indicate anything until you are at really high rating. that's because ranking is terrible in games.
if you want to play ranked, you're likely looking to prove yourself. you will let a system define your value as a player from unknown metrics and be expected not to ask questions. don't you see how silly this is? you're playing to prove yourself, to become better at the game, and you don't ask questions when you are handed your shiny evaluation badge.
the key to playing ranked is to truly, innerly, not give a shit about the rank the system gives you. the game doesn't tell you where you need to improve. you need to figure that out yourself. that means you don't let a number or a badge define your worth as a player, YOU define your worth as a player. you will likely follow the dunning kruger confidence curve in this assessment.
at one point, you will feel like you are unable to assess what you need to improve on. then you get alternate views in on your game. use coaches. there are likely some that like to do it for free. but remember, it is your responsibility to assess yourself. do not take what is said as fact. coaches aren't always right. remember to ask your coach why they think what they think. why they say what they say. sometimes you will find they are trying to point you in a direction of where they understand the game different than you.
it is almost expected from ranked games to have some sort of replay system that allows you to playback the game and identify what you could have done better. use it. it is infinitely better than guides you can find on youtube or streams you watch on twitch. you are not categorizable as a player. your problems are individual. guides and streams cannot generalize you and help you.
as a general rule, you should never be spending more than 20% of your time reviewing games or watching guides. you need experience. the only way you can get it is by playing the game, and that is the only part of ranked that is a grind. practical experience in the field. watching things unfold before your very eyes. you will be able to identify when things will happen before they happen.
regardless of how ready you're feeling. you need to go into a game, and think to yourself: "i might lose this game, but that's okay, because i might pick up on something i can use in all my next games". games give you literal experience by playing them. in order to level up, you need to attain enough experience. higher levels take longer to level up in.
now you can see how your skill is a lot more complex than a shiny badge. you can go into a game and feel good about losing it, because you know it will help you in the long run. the more time you spend, the better. do not hold back because you think you can't perform optimally. literally, DO NOT warm up. warm up by playing ranked. warming up is short-sighted. losing is winning in the long run.
with all this focus on yourself, you'll be too busy caring about self-improvement to look at what your teammates are doing. it is the most irrelevant thing to look at as a player. they can be afk or trolling for all you care. there are so many other games for you to play in. you'll win your games on average because you know you are a good player.
you cannot rely on your team. and unless you are in the top 1%, your communication is not a priority. it is your job to either carry or be carried. you need to play like you are playing a solo game with randoms against randoms. if your play relies on your team to work, it is a bad play. if your play could turn out any way, and you end up getting help from your team, it is one of the best feelings ever.
that would be all. stay positive in your games, friends. at the end of the day, if you aren't enjoying it overall, you're missing the point of playing videogames.
