It’s similar to making animations and making tiktoks. You can spend ages making an animation but making a tiktok wouldn’t take too long. Not saying that making the ms paint stuff wouldn’t take a while but I’m just comparing the two.
I'm not sure if there's such thing as a perfect combat system, but I think different kinds of combats work best for different games. Hollow Knight, for example, manages to have an incredibly simple yet deep combat, not in the sense of having to use lots of buttons, but that in its simplicity it has so much room to grow. Each scenario is different and requires different skills from the player, the combat yet so simple is so satisfying and gives the sensation of growth through learning
They're so annoying, fairly quick and hard to see. They hit then run for safety. Their poison effect is strong as hell, and it stacks too. You better have potions ready. If you get hit by them more than three times, you're basically crippled. Four, and just call yourself dead, its literally a terminal illness.
I don't know man all you need to do is switch to a weapon that has the "meat lover" enchantment when fighting vegetarian scorpions, so that skill is kinda a waste of skill point imo
Why don’t more games use badge systems for upgrades? Or the ability to respec like dark souls? This allows players to play their way. It’s just better.
6:02 Destiny, in a nutshell. This is one of Bungie's biggest flaws with their game. There is absolutely no sense in a light/power level if the guy who just started a new character and myself at max level, do the same amount of damage to a level 1 enemy. So lame! Bungie has a fear of players being too strong. This was a good video.
I totally agree with this, i took a break from D2 recently and moved to sekiro, I am a souls veteran but i had to re learn a completely different combat system, but it feel so satisfying coming back to an earlier game area such as Senpou temple and breaking most of the enemies posture in a few hits. Another thing is looking back at the earlier game bosses/minibosses and seeing how quickly their posture bar fills compared to the slow almost antagonizing build of the final boss’ bar (sword saint isshin). well with the exception of the third phase as his lightning attacks can give you an advantage.
Long story short, games should make you realize that your journey was and still is meaningful, and a very simple way of doing that is scaling enemies based on the area or just that specific enemy type in general.
I stopped playing Destiny when all the Christmas noobs were able to just leap into gear I had to GRIND for, allowing them to easily and quickly level up to my high level/ gear score.
I've had the opposite problem with a lot of games too though, including Destiny at times. It's a really weird balance that designers have to strike between making you constantly feel more powerful than before while also making sure every encounter is more difficult than the last despite all those upgrades. Relative to the challenges you face, you should always be getting weaker, not stronger, but the way you FEEL needs to be the inverse.
I definitely agree with you about combat evolution. Getting the flash shift ability in metroid dread literally changes the whole game from that point on.
The game that has my favorite combat has to be Devil May Cry 5, there are just so many options and so much to learn to perfect the combos you can do. It starts by giving you the basics and as you progress you get more tools, more moves, and more weapons that can all be paired with each other in some way to do combos. I have never seen a game that wants the player to style on the enemies as much as this game and I highly recommend it to anyone this sounds appealing to.
That's exactly the game I was thinking of while watching this video. I think the most fun I've ever had with combat in video games is with any of the Dante sections. He's pretty difficult to learn but the game does a great job of easing you into the infinite possibilities of his moveset whether you are a newcomer or veteran of the series
Most dmc games are great, 3,4&5 are the best, 1 is great but it’s combat isn’t as good as the other three, and 2.... we don’t talk about 2... that game can be boiled down to ‘enter devil trigger, spam ebony and ivory, win’ 😒
I finished devil may cry 5 and it amazing and worth playing. My favourite characters to play was vegil because of the combat and the music (Bury the light).

middle earth combat is so repetitive it should be a crime. Every encounter takes 15 minutes because you have party which is very easy but then oh no you have to finish them on the ground and when you have other enemies fighting you, you can't finish them off. The combat is so annoying
The Dishonored series has the perfect gameplay imo. They let you in big ass open levels where you can go almost everywhere and choose your approach (you even have the possibility to not kill anyone) and always be creative with a wide variety of options (you can like throw things from the decor like glasses), upgrades give you useful powers, ennemies are all different from each others, the mechanics are freaking awesome... it definitely have one of the greatest combat system of all time.

what's really important in gameplay is evolution. You start simple but you add layer and layer of gameplay on top of it. Good example is persona 5, you keep learning new mecanics even after 9 hours in.
Also, strategy is a must have for video game combat. I don’t want to just “robbie used sword, the enemies to 92 hp”! Give me the ability to use Items in out of the box ways!
Spider-Man PS4 combat is some of the best I've seen. Absolutely captured Spider-Man combat well. It feels good and it's so simple. Until you have to fight more complex baddies having you perform more complex moves.
It's always so interesting to hear people's takes on combat systems, some just click better than others with people. Like I played god of war and it's combat felt annoying for me but elden ring feels exactly like what I want from a combat system. It really is different for each person.
Elden ring is a great combat system but it requires so much concentration sometimes it becomes overwhelming. Combat evolves from "oh that guy is about to attack, time to parry or dodge" to " JESUS CHRIST THROW YOUR ATTACK ALREADY- OH CHRIST I DODGED TOO LATE. WAIT WHAT DO I DO HERE WHY AM I NOT HURTING IT? WHY CANT I DODGE THAT? OH GOD MY STAMINA" I LOVE elden ring, its combat is challenging, and requires focus. But it's such a steep learning curve from the cave of knowledge to...Well literally anything. I didn't even know how to level up since I didn't sit in this one spot till about three hours in, so I finally got the ability to do that AFTER BEATING MARGITT. It does a terrible job at explaining, and you get the ability to summon by going back to a church that you'd have been to, resting there AFTER resting somewhere else. That is THE WORST WAY to introduce a mechanic EVER. People legit have gone an entire playthrough and missed the summoning bell. Games shouldn't hold your hand, but they shouldn't let you run out into traffic either.
@@xinderx The game guides you with the rays of grace, really it’s the player’s fault for not paying attention, it’s also really hard to run past the two sites of graces that unlock leveling.
@@xinderx actually there are 5 sites of grace where the cutscene can trigger and you get the summon bell after you enter liurnia trough the twin maiden husks
I'm the opposite i liked the combat in Dark Souls 1 but every other non Sekiro FromSoft game has been more boring than the previous one for me to the point that i literally fall asleep to the combat in Elden Ring its just too basic and samey to feel fun anymore after 6 near identical combat systems with 2 to 4 core changes max per game and not even significant changes at that ... Sekiro on the other hand is a godsend
ULTRAKILL is one of the games that can make you feel like po from kung fu panda two, by perfectly balancing every recourse while having movement options like a twelve year old on pixie sticks. But the game is really difficult and getting everything mastered and going back to a level you struggled with for hours only to leave everything in a giant red smear is amazing. By far my favorite games for its combat alone.
Make a video about ULTRAKILL! As a HUGE Halo and Doom boi, ULTRAKILL has gotta be the best game I've ever played so far. It takes us back to the time where graphics really didn't matter as long as gameplay is good and boy did this game deliver
Whenever my group makes a game I'm gonna use this video as the groundwork. I've never thought about it too much but I fully agree with the points you made
2:21 "Most turn based games can be played on paper in pen" Me, currently making a turn based game by writing out all of the enemies and moves they have on a page in my notes 🤠
There’s a advantage to first person heavy in games such as CoD and BF and comes too FPS it punishes you for not keeping your guard up and with gun play such as you aim a sniper rifle aiming can disorient you and first person rewards you with immersions
In my opinion shooter games should be fps and melee games tps, so it would be interesting to see if a game that has both could switch cameras depending on the weapon you're wielding
While I have no real stakes when it comes to games being delayed because I barely have enough time to play games (I spend just as much time travelling every day to work as I do sleeping just to make sure I wake up early enough not to be late the following work day, relying on RUclips of all things to be my sole source of entertainment these days), it being delayed is *not* a good sign. Setting a release date is (mostly) not just one guy pulling it out of the air and calling it a day. It requires several people meeting and evaluating the state of the game and its scope to come to that conclusion, with Project Managers, Directors, etc. overseeing the game to meet that date. Otherwise, there's someone there in a leading dept. messing up and not being able to keep to the schedule. Most of the time, it's more than one person messing things up. Now, I am _not_ saying that delayed game would always be shit. It means that the publisher agreed that the game needed more time than usual. Though it also meant that the leadership aren't able to keep to their original promise, which casts doubt on their ability to do their jobs.
Overgrowth is an awesome game with simple, yet effective combat. Parkour ninja rabbits with swords is one of the more unique aspects, but damn, it’s so fun!
I know its a game type that some people dislike, but I feel like terraria ticks off all those boxes as well, but some don't like 2d pixel graphics, but its really enjoyable.
I think I know a game series you might like. The ARKHAM series combat free flow is smooth as butter. You can upgrade or unlock new skills and weaponry. The combo moves you can pull off can help you in a pinch like from one shot defeats to crowd control. Stealth is awesome and fun. Gliding around is fun and pretty cool. Enemies (although a bit lacking in ARKHAM Asylum and expanded on in the other games) is pretty cool you have regular thugs and thugs with melee weapons. To enemies with knives and stun sticks making you have to use your brain when put into a room with these guys. To enemies with actual guns where you have to pick them off one by one or else you'll die in a millisecond. Bosses (again although a bit lacking in ARKHAM Asylum and again is expanded upon in the later games) the best boss in the series I doubt you haven't heard about this is Mr.Freeze because he adapts to your attacks every time you do a takedown on him. Also you have a versatile and wide moveset that combines buttons you have to press too activate certain moves. Overall the ARKHAM serieses combat is well made and gets expanded on in every title (except origins which reused a lot of assets from ARKHAM City but they still added to fwe things and its still fun.) Overall it's an amazing series and I would recommend starting with ARKHAM Asylum and going forward. (PS some people say origins is bad but it's pretty under rated so I would still play it if I where you.)
Circle: Games that tell you to hit the counter button a million times are stupid Also Circle: I recommend Sekiro I say this with love I know what you meant kdkdkdl
Plus in God of War Ragnarok it has new types of shealds, new characters to play as , new companions , new enemies and weapons plus the wepons have brand new macaics
So, I was thinking about it, and would "Ghost of Tsushima" be a game with good combat? I know I feel it's satisfying. It's got freedom to do what you want, third person camera, certain enemy's are weak to sertain fighting stances, etc.
And the counter hits don't happen at huge, slow telegraphed moments You have various approaches to fighting, upgrades make a difference Seems the only issue is the rinse-and-repeat open world
It's good for about 10 hrs and then the game offers nothing new anymore unfortunately. There's basically only 1 enemy type once you become proficient -hot take-
I feel like there’s a lot of really fluid combat in Yakuza Kiwami. It’s one thing to button mash (not very effective) and another to tiger drop (extremely boring) and then there’s this whole new experience combining different rushes and swapping between styles mid fight. It’s a blast
I'm not a fan of having to be careful with my item management to beat the game, but if I just switch my perspective that the item management is apart of the game and not necessarily the combat itself
Throwing my choice for peak combat into the ring, Shadow of Mordor/War, namely how the nemesis system intertwines with the combat to create encounters than can turn on a dime, the domination system allowing for entire armies to be built over the course of a single fight, and aspects like rivals, strongholds, and a chain of command constantly changing the scale at which fights are fought.
The combat is simple but it's so well executed, it's the main thing that led my to disagree that you need meaningful combat changes, Sekiro has no items, and none of the skills are that gamechanging, I mean Ichimonji is busted and Mikiri Counter is a must but besides that it's pretty simple, you're extremely limited on how ability spam because of Spirit emblems but you're fine without it if you know how to parry and be agressive
god of war combat is one of the most enjoyable combat in gaming every enemy has its own ways to kill and gets grabbed diffirently and special finishers for every enemy its a masterpiece
I personally, loved the combat system in Horizon Zero Dawn , wasn’t absolute perfection but was just a lot of fun, combining aspects like stealth with badass combos and different weapon types, and yet wasn’t so convoluted you could pick it up again. I loved GoW3 but something about the gameplay for the recent one didn’t resonate with me.
I liked the mechanics for dawn of war 1, to retribution. It was pretty fun, and legendary, having to use different strategies (My personal favorite was attaching a fully upgraded force commander with a grey knight squad), demolishing weak men who have their spleens explode, deep striking, and praying that your units go where you want them, moving units into cover, building turrets in said cover, and last but not least, steamrolling the enemy with un-lorewise amounts of units. Don't forget legendary soundtracks
Monster Hunter World was this game for me, I never felt such growth in a game only to get humbled by the next elder dragon and me seeking a way to overcome it.
My first MH was Generations Ultimate and going from that to Rise Sunbreak was like going from a fighter jet to one of the toy planes outside of stores 😂
"Without clarity, the other aspects all fall apart", he used an egg to represent clarity, and eggs are used to hold ingredients together in cooking. I see what you did there!
personally, simplistic controls are so much less overwhelming than having every button to use in combat. Jedi Survivor, Hollow Knight, and Assassin's Creed (at least the new ones) all feel so fun to fight in because anyone can do it. It's simplistic, you cant really make mistakes in what move you wanna pull off. It's just attack or block/dodge.
Yeah I think incremental boosts are just as much of a tool as huge gameplay warping upgrades. You gotta mix and match them juuuust right... OOOOR just be a metroidvania.
Bro I had to spent like 12 plat to get my accs and weapons to reasonable prefixes, and thats the only bad thing about preparing your equipment in Terraria
This has helped me to better understand and appreciate the Resident Evil games. I'm not a fan of having to be careful with my item management to beat the game, but if I just switch my perspective that the item management is apart of the game and not necessarily the combat itself, I'm more encouraged to try the earlier ones. It's like a challenge now to how good I can manage my items.
Agreed my only problem with it (I don’t know if this is true in all re games I’ve only played re 2&3 remakes a bit of re4 and re7) is the aiming sometimes mainly because I’m on console and getting headshots with a controller when you don’t have aim assist is harder then a genshin player when they see a child so conserving ammo and resources can be a pain in the a$$ to deal with
A game that, at least for me, has a "perfect" combat system is Hyper Light Drifter. It's just so damn satisfying to kill enemies in that game that I've finishied it like 10 times
@@CircleToonsHD Circle, I think God of War 2018 contradict or do not fulfilled the points you've made. Agency, GOW confines you to a linear passage while also incorporating weapon specific enemies. Imbalances, the game gives you the same enemy types throughout a playthrough just with higher stats. Evolution, it's rather limited but grants the allusion of complexity through the branching skill tree and earning runic attacks. On a related note, I have to say that "button mashy" is a criticism of yourself because the choice of attacks are reliant own your creativity. Clarity and Control, the FOV. For a series that relishes on the one man army trope, it's utterly confusing as to why the devs agree to limit it with a tightly frame camera. I get the idea of complementing narrative but the band aid solution of giving threat indicators already compromise that. And for a melee focused game, the screen gets messy if players attempt crazier moves against multiple enemies as it is filled with motions and particle effects. Also, we lose manual jumping because of this.
I remember finishing my first NG+ run, and right after that discovering that the cape, bot and sword you wear actually has a bunch of diferent effects including the super useful +1 HP that would have spared me of i don't know how many deaths

@@ItchiestBum you can't deny it's easy to skip the summoning bell, and you can very easily not go to the storm hill gate grace, or rest there
@@xinderx actually there are 5 sites of grace where the cutscene can trigger and you get the summon bell after you enter liurnia trough the twin maiden husks
8:01 at this exact moment, I got an ad for Ubisoft+ and the first game shown off in that trailer was Assassin’s Creed, what timing
you've really upgraded your "animation" throughout the years
Arkham Combat (Mainly Knight) falls into the boxes too.
"These are all valid points, time to done none of these" -Activision
Make a video about ULTRAKILL!
As a HUGE Halo and Doom boi, ULTRAKILL has gotta be the best game I've ever played so far.
It takes us back to the time where graphics really didn't matter as long as gameplay is good and boy did this game deliver
Watching this now after getting a quest 2 and playing into the radius made me realize into the radius is damn near perfect with this

2:21 "Most turn based games can be played on paper in pen"
Me, currently making a turn based game by writing out all of the enemies and moves they have on a page in my notes 🤠
There’s a advantage to first person heavy in games such as CoD and BF and comes too FPS it punishes you for not keeping your guard up and with gun play such as you aim a sniper rifle aiming can disorient you and first person rewards you with immersions
I agree
I think this is objectively one of the best videos about video games where made.
(God of War is my favorite video game of all time)
Ya know i got a idea for that sheld thing, it would be a dodge roll nto a side attack or a jumpkick stunning him and letting him be damaged
Ok I will keep this in mind when making another game
Overgrowth is an awesome game with simple, yet effective combat. Parkour ninja rabbits with swords is one of the more unique aspects, but damn, it’s so fun!
3:57 ah yes, a doom reference in a game review talking about good gameplay. The one missing ingredient
I know its a game type that some people dislike, but I feel like terraria ticks off all those boxes as well, but some don't like 2d pixel graphics, but its really enjoyable.
Terraria is the most well rounded 2d game, change my mind
I was thinking that when I was watching!!
I get that people are sick of the retro art style but you are really missing out if you dont play terraria
Fr so true
I don't think it's easy for a 2D game to have a very responsive fighting system

So, I was thinking about it, and would "Ghost of Tsushima" be a game with good combat? I know I feel it's satisfying. It's got freedom to do what you want, third person camera, certain enemy's are weak to sertain fighting stances, etc.
And the counter hits don't happen at huge, slow telegraphed moments
You have various approaches to fighting, upgrades make a difference

I feel like there’s a lot of really fluid combat in Yakuza Kiwami. It’s one thing to button mash (not very effective) and another to tiger drop (extremely boring) and then there’s this whole new experience combining different rushes and swapping between styles mid fight. It’s a blast
Lost judgment did this but better you should try it out
Honestly Yakuza 4 and beyond does this all very well, but 0 and beyond... God it's an orgasm in your hands when done right.
I'm not a fan of having to be careful with my item management to beat the game, but if I just switch my perspective that the item management is apart of the game and not necessarily the combat itself
This helps a lot man thanks, also great entertaining video
Throwing my choice for peak combat into the ring, Shadow of Mordor/War, namely how the nemesis system intertwines with the combat to create encounters than can turn on a dime, the domination system allowing for entire armies to be built over the course of a single fight, and aspects like rivals, strongholds, and a chain of command constantly changing the scale at which fights are fought.
I really love the Sekiro, everything about it
The combat is simple but it's so well executed, it's the main thing that led my to disagree that you need meaningful combat changes, Sekiro has no items, and none of the skills are that gamechanging, I mean Ichimonji is busted and Mikiri Counter is a must but besides that it's pretty simple, you're extremely limited on how ability spam because of Spirit emblems but you're fine without it if you know how to parry and be agressive
@@ricardoalves9605 yeah, even with only parry, shuriken prosthetic, and mikiri counter, the gameplay is already super fun!

I was literally comparing GOW 4 through all the video and when he puts it at the end is crazy
Don't forget legendary soundtracks

personally, simplistic controls are so much less overwhelming than having every button to use in combat. Jedi Survivor, Hollow Knight, and Assassin's Creed (at least the new ones) all feel so fun to fight in because anyone can do it. GOD WHY DID I FORGET TO ADD THAT
I was very surprised you didn't mentioned, but I'm happy to know you've enjoyed it. That game is an absolute gem
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FELLOW HLD FAN SPOTTED LET'S GOOOOOOO
I literally played it today, it's my 3rd of 4th playthrough, and NG+
