Just got Dark Souls and am playing it for the first time. I'm loving every second of it. Every moment is hell on earth and it's amazing. I've watched people play it for years, never once attempting it myself, and it really is something you have to experience to understand. I understand the hype
i originally avoided the souls games cause the difficulty of them felt really intimidating to me at the time. didn't want to throw money away on something where i can't get past the first boss. but when i tried bloodborne, i was hooked. beating that first boss even if it was just the cleric beast, just felt so good, i just felled a soulsborne boss. with each slain boss i got more confident not in the mindset of this is easy, but moreso, i CAN do this. beating the game i wanted to experience more of the games. demons souls, then dark souls 1. beating ornstein and smough, was such a rush, i wanted to keep going, i wanted to see the next boss, the next area. i would come close to breaking down wanting to raise the white flag, but that fire inside refused to go out, it was always, just one more try. each try i do better than the last, getting farther and farther till i finally punch through. areas that were kicking my butt at the start, become a lot easier after surviving the trial it puts you through. its always pushing you to be better, till you finally beat it and get to see the credits roll. in the end i always feel pumped up and ready for another souls game or a new game plus run after completing a souls game, really wanting to see just how far i can go. playing other games i just can't help but notice how the difficulty just feels wrong. either the health bars are just too ridiculously huge or they just have way too much defense and i am just basically tickling the boss with a feather duster no matter how strong my equipment is. i dunno going back to some other games its just more noticeable. its not that they aren't fun anymore, its just hard to ignore. i do agree though, you have to play these games to really understand its appeal and how it handles its difficulty.
Doom Eternals difficulty increases the AI of the demons and makes them act more intelligently. Demon on higher difficulties try to cut you of and attack more aggressively. This is also a great way to handle difficulty imo.
These two games take a different approach to difficulty, but both are very relevant in my opinion. What I like most about difficulty in Dark Souls is just that death is part of the game. You never reload your game, you just keep going.
I Beat the game on Ultra Nightmare and let me tell you. Doom eternal is the exact opposite of dark souls. On your own You are the most Powerful being on the game even if i throw in the most Threatening enemies in the game (imo Mancubus and Whiplash are a bit threatening) You'll still kill them easily While in dark souls There's no way You'll Beat a gwyn With a Broken straight sword unless you mastered the art of parrying. Doom eternal works Because The demons Work together to fight you. with some demons Specifically designed for support while others focused on Pressure the Carcass on his own Is pathetically weak even on nightmare he doesnt deal much damage. keep in mind the weaker enemies only need very few hits to put you in low health The Prowler While he is universally Hated he plays a Huge role sense on his own he does jack shit He Becomes an actual threat when you are running away. And Looking for chainsaw food Cacodemons Are Scammers. when you know they exist They are easily killed but if they sneak into you. its Game Over. Archviles Are Instantly Killed And for a Good reason But they Leave you vulnerable to The weaker enemies. (Gargoyle melee attacks is something to be taken seriously though.)
It also has something called a "token" system, where enemies can only attack you a certain number of times within a period, each attack represented by a token. Also only a certain number of enemies can attack you at the same time. On higher difficulties, the number of tokens the enemies have increase, making them more aggressive
I would agree with you if the game doesn't force you to die 25+ times to get past the first boss. yea it's hard but for people that don't like sweating their asses off it's game is trash.
@@filthycasual8074 Are u talking about the Asylum Demon? Because i never got that impression. I mean i knew i was getting my ass beaten and did pitiful damage until i found exit on the left side. heck my cousin when first playing noticed the exit and went straight for it instead of fighting the boss. Most friends i know had this experience as well. I mean the game asks you to be observant.
I know im a bit late but the way you talked about difficulty and the feeling of accomplishment after defeating a boss reminded alot of how I felt playing Hollow Knight, so I'd definitely recommend that one
@@zakkadoodlenoodledavis3311 I find it incredibly ironic how you call them the best NPCs while simultaneously spelling both of their names incorrectly.
I wish I could experience ds3 for the first time again, I played it when I was in a really depressing stage of my life that made it really hard for me to feel genuine joy and euphoria from anything but it really helped me get through that because that's what I felt when i finally beat a boss, now I have a ton of amazing memories playing it with my friends and getting through the game for the first time and now it's my favorite game of all time to the point I have beaten it 4 times already
This video finally convinced me to get into dark souls. I bought dark souls 3 a few days ago and had now defeated Pontiff Sulyvahn. I lost count of how many attempts I did and also got my throat a little sore from all the cursing.
@@mryupjup2203 I really really wanted to buy the game immediately after release but unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) dark souls 3 ignited my passion to play games and I ended buying sekiro, bloodborne, hollow knight and dmc 5 after finishing dark souls 3. @@reinirgi3376 those are all amazing games that I love. Enjoy ❤️ but do remember its a rare chance to play a game like elden ring on launch with no spoilers and players that all dont know what theyre doing~
@@mryupjup2203 Yo, don't know if you still care about this but I finally got elden ring a few a days ago and I'm loving it so far. Just defeated Godwrick and Margit who both wrecked my shit haha (probably because I'm too stubborn to use ashes summons during main storyline boss fights). At first I thought Margit was a little bullshit as he barely has any openings you can attack but it was my mistake to treat the bosses here like those of dark souls and bloodborne since they feel more like Sekiro bosses. The bosses here mostly act depending on how you deal with them instead of randomly selecting an attack from their moveset most of the time, and several openings only reveal themselves if you handle their attacks in a specific way.
I love dark souls because the “difficulty” isn’t based on chance, you can fix your play and it doesn’t pull any B.S. Oh and by BS I meant stuff like Capra demon and bed of chaos, I didn’t mean it didn’t pull any challenges, Definitely not.
Actually, that's part of the lore. All of those corpses and hollowed enemies you find throughout your journey in Dark Souls are the bodies of the ones who gave up before you. Even if you died 1,000 times, as the player, by not giving up, you're literally saving the life of the character by not becoming another hollowed.
Very well done explanation of the Soul series, one of my favorite things is listening to a friend go through their first playthrough of any soulsborne game
Excellently done, I like that you touched on the fact that it literally does change how you look at other games. I still remember playing Bloodborne, Demon/Dark Souls 1-3, all back to back and then playing Assassins’ Creed Syndicate and just feeling so differently about the Assassins’ Creed games which I had previously loved
Eh. It makes me feel like anything but a hero... The battle system is the most clunky awkward way to fight. It would be cool if the entire strategy weren't built around a strafe backstab and then repeat... The entire game.
Jason Thompson Yeah it’s a bit overrated. It’s either block and strafe or roll and poke. It excels in many other aspects though, which makes it so good.
I am aware that I am a year late here when saying this, but after playing Dark Souls for the first time, I completely agree with every word you say. Your video has truly touched my soul. And for that, I thank you.
For me, the easiest way to describe the " Perfected Difficulty " is just like you playing Chess against AI. When you select the hardest difficulty, the AI doesn't add any other Queen or something. The AI become harder to defeat. Make you feel the feeling of " If I f*cked up, I f*cked up. "
Fun fact, if you won against an AI in chess, it probably let you win. Chess has a set number of possible movements. An AI can calculate them all and thus predict the consequences of every move. An AI programmed to beat you at all costs will always choose the best possible moves, it takes a single mistake to lose.
@@axios4702 There are not enough atoms on the earth to store this capacity of data, it would take millions of years to even calculate all movements and there is no AI smart enough to outsmart a human pro chess player. Yes, there was an AI programmed which was able to defeat a human pro player, but this AI was specifically programmed to defeat him. By that I mean, it was able to defeat him but it wasn't able to defeat other pro players. So what you are talking is absolute bullshit. No AI has the capability to "let" you win. It is a war of outmaneuvering and not of letting win.
@@jastreb6504 Stockfish is far stronger than any human chess player, especially in the end game. But a human-computer team is still stronger than either one individually.
Dark souls feels like pretty immerssive because you literally know only as much as you explore. You could literally beat the entire game without knowing wtf you're doing. Which I've personally gone through in ds3
I find it so fucking funny I entirely forgot to go to the Cathedral of the Deep by the time I reached Irythrill I googled the location of ths doll, found out there's actually a small arch passageway by the crystal sage I blindly missed, and started heading heading over there to do it.
@@rigel555 Oh my god, my first experience in DS3 was exactly the same lmao. The path to Faron Keep was just so much more obvious that I didn't even realize that there was another path to go down.
It's still difficult, it's just less about skill and more about cheesing the game. Especially the early ones where you have limited casts with no way to replenish them in between bonfires.
I wouldn't call magic build easy mode. Plenty of enemies especially ones with shields can block your magic making it not very cost effective. And heaven help you tey to kill eldritch with magic attacks.
That's what I really love about these games. These games really do feel like the embodiment of David and Goliath or those stories where the knight fells a fathomless beast of a colossal scale. The adrenaline, the focus, and the ever lumming presence of failure, all wrapped up in a gorgeous looking game with fantastical designs for both people and monsters alike. And finally after countless attempts, after literal days of fighting the same boss over and over again, the feeling you get after defeating them is hands down the single greatest feeling you can get from a game like these.
The first time I saw a basilisk was in Dark souls 3 and I was like "oh that's cute... Kill it" saw the curse meter fill, thought I was just gonna get damaged, insta death. I may or may not have been salty. After dark souls 3 I played 1 and when I met them there and died I thought "ok it's not that bad, I can easily return to my souls" just to realize my HEALTH WAS HALVED. I may or may not have stopped playing dark souls 1 until a year later. and I've never died of basilisks since
@@cheese5595 yeah the first time you die to a basilisk in one is awful. Especially because the Depths are awful, the souls you lose are near the Basilisk that killed you, and it costs a lot of souls to get your curse cured if you haven't been to the New Londo Ruins
I have a love hate relationship with soulsborne games. Basically everything he said. There's something special about them. And that something special kind of ruins other games to an extent.
The best way I've heard Dark Souls described is that it's not "difficult" it's "punishing." Dark Souls is very clear about what its rules are. If you don't follow them, well, you died. Dark Souls can be mastered while "hard mode" in other games just feels like taking a walk in Demon's Souls' Valley of Defilement.
I've listened to soulsborne's soundrack for so many hours. I've watched Vaati's lore videos. I've watched the playthroughs. And I haven't even played any of these games yet. (2021) But somehow, I feel like none of that will actually spoil the experience of playing the games by myself, one day.
I've been watching boss reactions some time ago, and when watching the one about Quelaag, I was like ''Yeah, with how much all those streamers struggle, there's no way I'd beat her even if I had the game.'' Then, some time after that, I get the game, then I get to her fight, ready for the worst ... And then me and Mildred just destroy her. Souls games can make you very proud sometimes
I love Dark Souls, it’s not unfair, you understand why you got beaten and use it to your advantage. It’s fine to lose (even if you did it 20 times) because you get why it happened.
Not really The game's pretty easy except radiant and pure vessel and nightmare king grimm and primal aspids and enemies that explode and the levels and the acids and literally everything Except Zote
The bad thing about Dark Souls games is reaching the point that you get good at the game. It's like finishing a book, you cant' just unlearn and read it again. Also, at this point in the "future", knowing that there are no more dark souls.
@@aldodzb But From Software still exists and they are making Souls-like. Elden Ring will most likely be like Dark Souls + much more. There is also Bloodborne and Demon's Souls but for that we would need a PS5. I have heard praise about The Surge 2. I don't like the sci-fi setting for these games myself. But with that game's exp. the dev is developing Lords of the Fallen so, that sounds promising as well. There's also games like Ashen, Outward, Blasphemous, Hollow Knight. The first 3 games mentioned aren't perfect but these are also their respective dev's first games. Actually all 4 are the dev's first games. Imagine how well would their sequels will turn out to be.

i originally avoided the souls games cause the difficulty of them felt really intimidating to me at the time. didn't want to throw money away on something where i can't get past the first boss. but when i tried bloodborne, i was hooked. beating that first boss even if it was just the cleric beast, just felt so good, i just felled a soulsborne boss. with each slain boss i got more confident not in the mindset of this is easy, but moreso, i CAN do this. beating the game i wanted to experience more of the games. demons souls, then dark souls 1. beating ornstein and smough, was such a rush, i wanted to keep going, i wanted to see the next boss, the next area. i would come close to breaking down wanting to raise the white flag, but that fire inside refused to go out, it was always, just one more try. each try i do better than the last, getting farther and farther till i finally punch through. areas that were kicking my butt at the start, become a lot easier after surviving the trial it puts you through. its always pushing you to be better, till you finally beat it and get to see the credits roll. in the end i always feel pumped up and ready for another souls game or a new game plus run after completing a souls game, really wanting to see just how far i can go.
playing other games i just can't help but notice how the difficulty just feels wrong. either the health bars are just too ridiculously huge or they just have way too much defense and i am just basically tickling the boss with a feather duster no matter how strong my equipment is. i dunno going back to some other games its just more noticeable. its not that they aren't fun anymore, its just hard to ignore.
i do agree though, you have to play these games to really understand its appeal and how it handles its difficulty.
@@Teythlis yeah, I think that's why it says "you died" instead of "game over" or some such. because, like, it's *not* a game over, it's a setback.
Doom eternal works Because The demons Work together to fight you. with some demons Specifically designed for support while others focused on Pressure
the Carcass on his own Is pathetically weak even on nightmare he doesnt deal much damage.
keep in mind the weaker enemies only need very few hits to put you in low health
The Prowler While he is universally Hated he plays a Huge role sense on his own he does jack shit He Becomes an actual threat when you are running away. And Looking for chainsaw food
Cacodemons Are Scammers. when you know they exist They are easily killed but if they sneak into you. its Game Over.
And now it's time for the Elden Ring hype!
Dark Souls is so good, CircleToons had to animate everything.
So true
I would agree with you if the game doesn't force you to die 25+ times to get past the first boss. yea it's hard but for people that don't like sweating their asses off it's game is trash.
