    Funny, I know this stuff but watched anyways. What really hit me today is:
    1. A lot of the V's power is that its third is the leading tone of the tonic.
    2. When you play the V7 you are getting additional power as the V's m7 is the root of the sub dominant (the IV).
    3. When you play the V/IV (the C7) to lead into the IV (F) you get power from the m7 of the tonic being the subdominant note (the IV) of the IV.
    Cool stuff, thanks.

    First and foremost, hoping you and yours have a wonderful holiday, and if i may risk it, Merry Christmas. Now, as to your great teaching, you have given me the language to describe chord movements i have played for years. For example, there are songs where i would play the 2nd of the key, but as a seventh to get me to the V. Now i know what to call it!, Same with this lesson, now i know what to call it. It also opens up reading others Nashville Number charts. You really are a wonderful teacher. Ever grateful.

    Gracie, I just stumble across your channel here while watching news and stuff. I'm an old guy, just turned 60...
    Wish I could of had a teacher like you when I was 9 years old and first started playing guitar. I took sine lessons when I was 10 from a part time musician collefe student that my mother met a a realtor. He was a nice enough guy, but a poor teacher. He basically taught me some basic chords and some basic songs, but taught me nothing interesting or valuable as far as vasic theory, or how music works. Kids that start at and young age are at their most impressionable as far as learning the musical alphabet and what, why and how music works. Anyway, right off, I niticed how well you get across the valuable theory by doing it with the element of simplicity, and not over complicating it.
    I can tell Gracie, that you're a great teacher that understands how to make it simple to understand for those of us that sometimes fear that its too complicated to understand music.
    I'll be subscribing to your channel and checking out more of your videos.
    Love your style already from what I see, and will be checking you out later when I have more time. Peace ~
    Great learning experience...
    Two thumbs up ma'am.

    Here is an easier pattern I found to form the V/V. Just take the second degree of the Major Scale. It should be a minor chord. Transform it into a major key. It's gonna be the Dominant of the dominant of the minor key.
    Example in the key of C.
    C Major scale : C-D-E-F-G-A--B
    Diatocinc chords of C : C Major - D Minot - E Minor - F Major - - G Major - A minor - B diminished
    - The chord of in the key of C Major is D Minor.
    - So, the V/V in the key of C is : D Major - G Major - C major

    I really like that expression 😁 rolling the red carpet out for ... We definitely should do that for you too Gracie. So nice to see that patterns i used for years unconsciously, are going back to logical laws of music theory. You explain it so well❤This is very helpful in composing and understanding songs. You mentioned in the video...there are no real rules in composing, so someone could put all chords together if he/she thinks that sounds nice. But i wondered: is it possible to make this type of musical "grammar" for every song? So the other way around --> take a random song with the chords written down. Is it always possible to get every chord in the I, ii, ..., vi, viio, V/IV, V/V, V/x format? Let's say a total breakdown of the song in roman characters? One should think...if it sounds nice there must always be a theoretical logic behind it like you explained with the secondary dominant chords

    • @GracieTerzian
      @GracieTerzian  11 месяцев назад +1

      Yes you can pretty much always give an explanation for every chord change... but you start venturing into justifications like "modal interchange" and other things like that.. so sometimes you're borrowing chords from different keys (for example if you're in the key of C major and you come across an F minor chord, well F minor is a chord from the key of C minor (not C major) so that would be considered modal interchange because you're borrowing a chord from the parallel minor key (C minor is the parallel minor of C major). I haven't made any videos about this sort of thing yet... but yeah basically you can always come up with a theoretical explanation for any chord change.

    • @hansvanlavieren7027
      @hansvanlavieren7027 11 месяцев назад

      @@GracieTerzian thanks for your extensive reply 😊 maybe you can do some videos on this subject when you have time? it would be awesome to have a song notated in general, starting from a random key. Maybe the chord you borrow from the relative minor could be indicated as IV(m) when you borrow the Fm when composing in the key of C. When there's no obvious logic you could use the circle of fifths as a reference to indicate from which key the chord is borrowed? For example ii (-2) when you borrow chord ii from the key which is 2 keys to the left in the circle or vi (+3) when you borrow chord vi which is 3 to the right in the circle. Maybe there are already ways to indicate these situations? I also stumbled upon 'neapolitan' (?) chords, which are types of predominant chords, which are indicated as N (V/V) , if I remembered well.
      I guess it's my mathematical background which drives me to break down a song this way😂 I guess for most songs the "simple" roman notation will do.
