Imagine how many more people would have learnt to love music theory if it had been taught this well in school. Thank you. :)
Aw that's great to hear.. thank you so much!
@@GracieTerzian the rule works, you know, if you circularize it to the beginning with the first flat :)
I’m confused what notes do we actually play??
@@ddwow566 As Gracie explained, remember just one flat is the key of F major. So all the other notes in the scale are naturals ie the only note to be played flattened is Bb. Write out the notes on the stave eg Treble clef. From the bottom. D E F G A B C D all these notes will be played natural except where you see the Bb . Simply on the stave (lines and spaces) where flats are placed in the key signature those notes should be played flattened. Alternatively where the key signature is shown with sharps those notes are played sharp.
I like your voice. I developed my taste for all things challenging by repeatedly taking a small bite again and again over days.
Oh, come ON! ALL THOSE years of struggling, and THIS gets it done in like a SECOND! THANK YOU, Gracie!
So glad to hear it Tom! :) Thank you
Dude right?? I can't believe all those years of lessons and 4 years of chorus in school, this isn't the standard.
Jip, exactly my feelings as well!!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
After playing guitar for almost 28 years and learning by myself I decided to formally get a Music Degree in my country but the teachers I had made me feel so bad because they wanted to show off instead of teaching. I'm a lawyer with several degrees in my career and I've been also a teacher but I always wanted my students to be better than me. The music teachers I had made this so so so hard that I was almost frustrated. Why couldn't they explain this signatures understanding this easy? Why make everything look so difficult? I love you Gracie! Thanks for all the knowledge you give to us! Blessings!
Aw what a sweet comment.. thank you so much! Very happy to hear you find the video easy to understand :)
Because they love to robs your money and teaches you extremely slow in order they takes more money from you and never teach you what you love or what your came for, to picturize their teaching idea they don't wants you to have the full water glass and you goes forward, but they loves to full your glass by drops till you learn.
Your comment reminds me of my youth in elementary band class, the teacher asking to see my hands and then declaring they were too small, that my fingers could not even cover the key holes, that my hands were not the hands of a clarinetist. Raising his own mighty hands, he declared triumphantly, "THESE are the hands of a clarinetist!" Why, I wondered, were my parents obliged to pay public school taxes, so that self-serving jackass could call himself a teacher?
Best music teacher ever, why can’t everyone make it this simple
All my musician buddies try to "mystify" theory all the time. Finally somebody that can "demystify" it for those of us who just want to understand!
so glad to hear it!! :) thanks so much
Your buddies don’t understand it either.
I got a degree at SMITH COLLEGE A BA IN MUSIC. I SURE COULDVE USED YOU! Excellent way to teach this skill. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much :)
Makes so much sense when you explain it like that. Thank you
Playing for a long time just for fun. Your video is simple but packed with what I need.
My musical education was choir practice for 8 years at school. As soon as I got to 3rd primary, the teachers told me to move my lips and not make a sound. Now that I'm retired, I thought it was never too late to learn the piano. And yes, music theory seems to be helpful. I've been watching a ton of your videos and you have such a great method of explaining this subject.
Merci beaucoup.
I can’t believe how well you presented this simple yet crucial idea... thank you 🙏
You've demystified yet another area of music theory I've struggled with. I truly appreciate how you simplify topics of music theory. This was so valuable. Thank you, Gracie.👏
I'm currently teaching guitar to my 17 year old daughter and wanted to give her a good grounding in the rudiments which she can carry over to any other instrument.
She has struggled at school with music theory as she fell behind and needed a little extra help.
Not only has your channel been a priceless resource to her, it's also been a great help to me as I brush up on my theory (and teaching) skills. You make all of this fun to learn.
You are an explainer, not a lecturer - thank you so much for your time and effort.
I will recommend your channel as the go-to for anyone interested in learning music!
Steve
For the b's: It is always a perfect fourth down the last written b on the sheet. This also works for the first b of course, which is F Major (b flat down a perfect fourth leads you to F major). With that system you always check the last b or # that is written (last b: go down a perfect fourth, last # move up a half step), so it might be easier to memorize for some people.
bingo
For flats, find where fa is. For sharps, find where ti is
You are amazing, Gracie! I have been into music for decades and no one has ever shown me that simple trick. They always use the circle of 5ths. Keep up the great work!
The fact that experienced the same thing a lot of people in the comments did, shows how well You taught this! fantastic job, Thank You.
In over 20 years playing music I’ve never looked at it this way before. Nice idea. You could take it one step further and say to find minor you first find your major key then count three semitones down.
So beautifully explained. It is actually easy to remember. I glad I found you.
Glad it was helpful!
Oh WOW!!! I can’t believe how easy you’ve made it to learn these!!! After years of struggling to memorise (and I still haven’t) the key signatures, I now feel confident in working key signatures instantly. Thank you SO much for posting this video 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Glad it was helpful! you're very welcome!
It's so easy, I can't believe I didn't know this trick before!?!
Hehe
Great tip. Been playing guitar (by ear) for almost 50 years. Just now getting around to the fundamentals (theory, music reading, etc) This was very helpful. Unlike most RUclips lessons this is practical tips you can use.
You break it down so a first grader can understand, and (at 69) that's just what I need. Good on you, dear!😊
Gracie you have cleared all my doubts. I have watched several videos but they confused me more until i find your explanation. I will always be grateful to you and remember your beautiful name Gracie. ❤
Aww what a kind comment!! Thank you so much!! Your words touch me deeply!
So that's the trick, THANK YOU!!!!!!!
A whole new world has opened. You're the BEST!
Yay for tricks! :) And yay for worlds opening up!!!
All these concepts are so much easier than they were explained to me and it took me 20 years to realize it 😢 BUT now that I’m finally realizing things like this through resources like your video, it’s all becoming so clear and I’m finally progressing again after a decade plateau
I’ve played trumpet for about 8 years and I’ve always been thinking about my keys in concert pitch over “trumpet pitch”. I now know to think primarily in trumpet pitch to avoid confusion and better understand how the keys behave
👏👏👏👍 I like the way you teach. You explain in a very simple way. Everybody can understand.
Thank you! 😃
Thank you Gracie, I've had my cousin Ron from St Croix who plays awesome guitar teach me theory whenever he comes to Colorado, and when he leaves I have a huge headache from trying to understand what he was saying 🤕 I can listen to you all day long and no headache, very enjoyable lessons....😊🎸🎼🎵🎶
Gracie, I just enrolled in music class at my community college. Your videos has helped me understand music theory so much. Thanks to you.
You have a special gift for teaching.
Thank you so much!
@@GracieTerzian 10% slower talking might be "OK" for people from other languages/countries like France / Germany / Skandinavia / Italy and Spain.
@@robertduis6730
Slow the video down bub. Its in the options. She’s actually speaking fairly slowly for native speakers
I can't believe how easy it is to understand the sharps and even start to memorize them! Thanks!
As I watched, and imagined which sharp keyboard keys were being added to the list, I realized that it started with F# [i.e.: the first of the "set of 3 black keys"] and the C# was added [i.e.: the first of the "set of 2 black keys"]...and so on. With this in mind, it made it easier to keep in mind what notes to play in each major scale. I hope that helps your audience and student.
Oh my goodness. This was so good. You’re such a great Teacher. Thank you.
Rock on!!! Thank you!
Your video just popped up in my feed. I had to watch it after reading your title. It’s like an answer to my prayer, for real. I have done music all my life and theory, but life disrupted my ability to keep up with it for so long. I remembered some of my theory but forgot most of it. So this is very helpful with remembering quickly what key I am in. And this was mind blowing- after years of theory I wish this method was taught instead. Thank you so much!
Your theory tutorials are so good; I’ve always found theory a pain to learn but now, thanks to you, it all becomes clearer. So much so I’ve shared your tutorials with friends on a Guitar forum who’re finding theory difficult! Thank you so very much! You’re a 🌟
I read a bunch of the comments on this video. What a hit this one is. Me too! I love it! Such clarity! And you are so darn cute! (Bonus!) What a joy you are Gracie! We love you!
Aww thank you so much Freddy! You are too kind!! ❤️❤️❤️
I really like the way you explain theory. Thank you for helping me understand the orchestra music I play on guitar at church better.
You’re very welcome! I’m so happy to hear it has helped you :) thank you so much
Gracie, you are truly amazing. Your talent for teaching is second to none. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Wow, thank you!
I have been studying piano for seven years. This is a great video to help me with key signatures. Your instructions are simple to follow. You are a great teacher. Thanks.
So happy to hear that, Larry! :) thanks so much for your very kind comments
In a major key signature the last sharp notated is the leading tone (major seventh), the last flat notated is the subdominant (perfect fourth), and the second to last flat notated is the tonic (note the major key is named for). Cool, thanks!
Mom taught me "The last sharp to the right is TI, count up to DO. -- The last flat to the right is FA, count down to DO." This not only made key identification easy, but also prompted me to think of the scales' syllables.
I learned something new today. Had no idea how to read key signatures. Great lesson. Thanks!
I'm not being a diligent at the moment as I should be at the moment but I'm moving into a more focused frame of mind at the moment. I'm getting back into playing guitar and I am amazed that teachers out there who are inspiring me the most, like Gracie Terzian, aren't guitarists, primarily. I think it's good for some of us to look at the bigger picture.
Gracie, I would like to request more about Jazz scales, and learning to play jazz piano. How to begin; scale pattern; common jazz key sigs; common rhythms; where to start; etc.
My first guitar teacher taught me a lot but he always said "you just have to memorize it". So many make theory seem so ridiculously hard. I always felt like it was just patterns and you only have to know the pattern and then you can extrapolate almost all of the rest.
Haha.. well he's not wrong... you do ultimately need to memorize things. But the question is, in what order do you memorize things? Obviously you can't memorize everything at first... but if you memorize certain things first, it is a lot easier and more manageable. I think if you memorize your major scales first, a LOT of other things in music theory make sense and become easier to memorize and comprehend. And before you memorize your major scales, it's good to memorize the circle of fifths.. so then you can always figure out the notes in your major scales using the circle.
@@GracieTerzian In my advancing years, I've been discovering that if you memorize a few fundamental things (as you say, in the right order), it saves you from needing to memorize a myriad of details out of context. A good teacher should have this sequence figured out.
i like how u get right into the video instead of doing a long intro at the beginning :D
gotta get to the point! :) thank you
Best music teacher in RUclips! Thanks.
Aw thank you, you're the best!
I have watched a couple of your music theory videos. Your videos definitely strengthened my understanding of those concepts. Appreciate the useful tips you include in the videos.
A nice, quick in a pinch kind of thing, but I agree with your comment about knowing the circle of fifths. That video is the best I've seen on the topic.
Thanks so much Dan!
Thank you Gracie for all you do, you're a fantastic teacher! I look forward to hearing more from you (and baby Roz) in the future :)
Oh my God this helped me realize that key signatures are just going through the circle of fifths
yep :)
@@GracieTerzian I also discovered I could find key signatures using the circle of fifths. Theory is surprisingly fun for a campfire guitarist
Yes, in most of all theory classes they fail explain the relation to the circle of fifths. If you run through it on Piano you will instantly see how the sharps are beeing built up and see the relation
Gracie I really enjoy hearing your voice and the way you present music theory. Your video trainings have renewed my passion in learning and performing again. I have been away from it during the Pandemic, but It's time to shine again. 😁🎉
Once again Gracie you have amazed me with making music theory so easy to understand! Thanks always!
You are an amazing music theory teacher! Thank you! Maestra!
Hi Gracie, I'm really glad to have discovered your channel. I count myself very lucky to have come across a theory teacher like you. Thanks so much for availing yourself.
Love your theory lessons!
So glad to hear that! Thank you :)
I often hear people who play instruments are afraid or don’t want to learn music theory. Not sure why, maybe school phobic.
I’m really digging your lessons. They’re helping me see and use the whole fret board on my bass guitar.
Thank you.
I think it’s probably because they think it’s hard. Or maybe they tried learning it once and it was explained badly and they found it confusing so it was easier for them to just reject the concept of it. I’m glad you are enjoying my lessons! Thanks so much for watching and for the nice comment :)
You clips are really clear and really helpful , I wish we had a good teacher like you a few years ago.
Please keep up the great work,
Best wishes to you.
Noury.
Thank you! 😃
That is brilliant! Why didn’t I know this 30 years ago!! You make it so easy to understand!
Wonderful Gracie, you are such a great teacher of music and make it so easy to understand, it seems to be all coming together thanks to you.
I'm 70 and I figured this out when I was 13 .. as I got older I forgot how this works thanx for reminding me.. good video
Amazing really! What a cool study! Thanks again Gacie!!
Ha... that’s a good one, Tracie! And the occasional background noise made it even more enjoyable to watch 😸 Shout out from Germany 🇩🇪
Hi Mari!!! Great to hear from you :) glad you enjoyed the background noise hehe :)
Thanks for your videos. I took band all through middle school and part way through high school and never had music theory taught the way you teach it...you make it make sense - thanks
All these videos are fantastic. Especially love the baby's commentary in the background of this one!!!!!!!
It’s like a safe space to learn fundamental basics, simple enough for youngsters to learn or even us old timers who never really got the whole theory thang.
Thanks for helping to make that fog clear!
I hear your lil baby being happy in the background. You have a gift!
:) haha yes she was making a few noises in there! :) thank you
@@GracieTerzian You really answer all these Comments yourself or is there a "Team Gracie"? You really are a great teacher. The way you break apart and describe theory is nuts! Sooo good Tx.
@@99yellowhouse Haha it's all me :)
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!! I was taught this many decades ago when I was a young boy in a singing class. I'm now retired and am dabbling again in music and could not remember this trick. I knew there was an easy way to figure out the key the song or tune is in without memorizing them but I couldn't remember this trick. I appreciate you taking the time to help us with this and refresh my memory. I've liked this video and subscribed to your channel!
Well done, Gracie! Super appreciate your help!
My pleasure!
I FINALLY can determine the key of a piece! Thank you , Gracie.
Wow. The way you break things down is amazing. You are very gifted. Keep up the good work!
You're music theory lessons are like gold! Thank you so much!
thank you Jim!
This is great ! And yet you must memorize this acronym F-C-G-D-A-E-B-F#-C# and know how to properly place it in the treble clef ! This is a great video I wish I had come accross it in my first year of music !
You are absolutely amazing! You make everything so simple and easy to understand! Thank you so much for sharing your unique knowledge!
Wow, this is super cool. Thanks Gracie for sharing your knowledge, this is like giving us a magic trick!
Gracie, your videos are excellent and very useful - thank you! Well prepared, simple and a sure "must watch" for learners like me.
Thank you Gracie. I just love your teaching style. 😍
Discovered these lessons a few days ago now i’m hooked, love the way you make it all so simple ❤
Hi Gracie! Love your music theory videos! Another amazing job, thank you again for your knowledge and presentation style! =)
Yes! I’m so happy before watching this there is no way I would have been able to work it out. Now there would be no way to forget. I love teaching like this. Thank you so much and Happy Easter.
Gracie, you're so smart and a very good instructor. I enjoy learning from you !
Wow, you relate things so clearly and simply. Never knew this great trick. Thanks!
I knew the trick for flats, but I never knew the trick for sharps!! Thank you so much!!!
I've seen this trick explained, usually they're trying to go fast and make a quick video. I never really understood it, though, because it was always rushed. You took the time to explain it thoroughly enough to explain every exception clearly yet concisely enough that it kept my interest. Well done!
I love this trick! No more looking up keys, thank you.
Yay so glad!
I am amazed. My teacher had a BA in Paino pedagogy from a top-tier university with a richly endowed music school and an all-star faculty. I don't think she knew this stuff.
My goodness that’s brilliant! Thank you Gracie. Cheers Dave
Thanks for the lesson, Mrs. Terzian.☺ You're such a good teacher🍎
