If you think you're seeing double, you're not! There was a glitch in this video the first time I uploaded it, and in order to fix it I had to delete the other one and reupload. If you asked a question in the first version but didn't get a chance to see the answer, please leave another comment and I'll get on it! Thanks! -- Erin
Love your videos, thank you! Thanks for sharing the info on insulating a planter, and thanks for sharing your perspective about peet. You have just the right blend of education, experience to share, and humor in your videos. Great delivery.
So excited to see your Belgian fence come to life. You have inspired me to plant one next year. So excited for updates and can’t wait to learn what the dos and don’t are.
This looks beautiful!!! I'm so excited to see how they grow. I have been wanting to plant some new climbing roses but I feel like I have 100 things to do and I cant decide on a variety. 😆 But I am loving the ones you planted. 💕
I will be watching next year about your container roses - I'm also in zone 5 and I've lost some in the damn ground. But the one I left in a pot and put in the garage lived. The problem with garage plants is that I never know how much to water.
You always make me giggle when I watch your videos- I love your dry humor! I am actually looking at buying DA for my fence line- please post an update on the roses and their progress. Also, how are your crabapples? I know that's not a fast project, but I'm so excited to see their progress! -DT
Jeremy Tompson Thanks! 😀 As for those crabapples, we’re at a watched-pot-never-boils point so I’m trying to avoid looking at them. I think I might be seeing things, it’s not healthy. Suffice to say I’m not going to rest easy until every one of them has growth. It would be better for my mental health if that happened sooner rather than later. I take solace in the fact that the crabapple in my yard is not close to doing anything yet either.
Hi Erin, love your videos even though l am a gardener from Australia, l still pick up little tips and tricks, and design ideas from you. Love your beautiful garden. I always plant my David Austin roses with the graft union just above the soil. Maybe that’s why they don’t thrive in their second year??? Or, do you have to plant them deep because of your freezing, snowy Winters? I have never seen a barerooted rose planted that deep. I’m not being critical, am just curious 😊. We live in a temperate zone here so we don’t get snow, just winter frosts. Look forward to seeing you plant your clematis. I just bought five to plant and let scramble up through my roses. Nothing more stunning to behold 🥰🌻🐞🐞🐞🐝🐝
Hey Erin! your biggest Fan who bugs you a bit too much. OMG I received my David Austin Roses Today 3-26-22. Umm isn't it too early to plant these roses? What would you do with them until it's time to plant? Also i came to this video because I'm hoping to plant David Austin Malvern in a container on my deck to drape the french doors to my kitchen :)
I had a clematis in a container for 2 years and I was shocked to see its root system when I decided to plant it in the ground, it had completely taken over the pot (which wasn't small) with thick fleshy roots, when the aerial part wasn't so large or developed by comparison. Also it never performed the way it does now in the ground, so I swore to never plant a clematis in a container again! I'm wondering if there are varieties that are less vigorous and will not do that?
I’m not sure if you’ll see this since it’s an older video. I live in zone 4 and am very intrigued with the idea of using insulation to overwinter plants in containers. From newer videos I don’t think you still have these roses in containers, do you think the insulation wasn’t adequate or were the roses just not hardy enough? Curious to get your thoughts on if this could work with different plants, planters, etc.
Love the new additions! I'm usually the same with roses and their size growth, but I have two out of six knockout roses that are ten feet tall, I have to use a ladder to prune. What's up with that?! lol
Love seeing new projects, now anxiously waiting to see the finishing results. Have you ever moved a clematis that wasn’t preforming well to a new area? I have one and considering moving it, but I guess nothing to lose if it’s not doing anything, I can’t even remember the clematis type 🤔. Thanks for sharing your project 👍❤️😊
Can’t wait for an update in summer on the roses. What kind of clematis are you going to plant and would you share where you order it from. The box store clematis always looks gosh awful. 😃
The Impatient Gardener I just ordered the Clematis Huvi and the Clematis Isabella. They were sold out of most everything! This will be my first experience growing Clematis so if you have some tips on planting and caring for them that would be a good video. I’m in Alabama so it’s a little warmer but same rules should apply when planting them right?
Beautiful rose, and beautiful pots. But wow, are those big for the space. Can you get your wheelbarrow around the corner in front of those containers? I’d be banging my thigh into the corner of those gorgeous teak boxes three times a day!
Nope. No wheelbarrow access. It’s about 2.5’ of space between the bed and the planter, which is 6” more than I have between most of the beds, other than the main crosswise access which is 4’. For me that was a good balance of maximizing my space and having the access I needed. Plus I always tend to go bigger on pots: Better for the plants and less watering!
The Impatient Gardener Erin, I have a question about the clematis. When it gets above the wire and to the arch, will it self attach? Will you have to add some small type of something for it to attach to (ie fishing line?) I have one growing right now and its all the way up its trellis and not jumping to attach to slats on my deck railing and I think they are too thick. Looking for ideas. The teak pots are GORGEOUS!
Marcy Griffo Some clematis are “vining,” meaning they have tendrils that attach, others are nonvining. But the vining ones will only grab onto skinny things like netting, string or maybe a trellis less than a quarter-inch around. So they won’t attach to slats and you’ll have to help them out. They become semi- self supporting but you have to get them pointed in the right direction.
I’ve been toying with the idea of ordering that rose, I know I should be growing more singles because they’re good for the bees but to me there’s nothing quite like a full cupped English Rose, I’ll wait until I see yours bloom before I decide, i am expecting a comprehensive review of its scent too!! 😂😂
Hi Erin @impatientgardener, Just saw the a video of your Newfoundlands. My friend Cat, who lives in Racine, WI, had two as well is this a Wisconsin thing?
Hi Erin!! I’m also in zone 5 (upstate New York) and I have fallen for David Austin’s... my question is how you treat them for winter? Wrapped in burlap? Rose comes? Heavy mulching with compost? I’m so torn!
I do rose collars around them and then bark or leaf mulch after the ground has frozen. Mulching with compost works too. These are the ones I use: amzn.to/37rUxwg
Thanks! I like the idea of still being able to see the plant all winter. We considered the fancy Gardner’s supply cones but I like your plan much better!
Did you inoculate your biochar first? I've read that you have to otherwise it will actually rob your plants of nutrients? I'm new to this and trying to make heads and tails of what I read on the internet. Thanks for another great video!
I have opposite problem, a large fiberglas container I'm worried will get too hot for my fussy Tanyosho Pine trees here in Texas. Do you know if I can get away with 1/2" insulation board? Or would I need to go the full inch? I'm frugal too:)
Erin the video said April 28 2020 I live in Wisconsin like you and it was rain rain rain all day for the last three days so how were you working in the garden lol
Forgot to ask, my climbing rose is blooming now but most of the blooms seem to be on wimpy stems and they seems so floppy. Is this a matter of me pruning incorrectly? I’ve never quite understood the best way to prune a climber.
For a climber you need to try to develop a permanent framework of a couple of strong branches, and then when you prune in the winter/spring, you just prune the smaller branches that grow out of the framework by a third or a little more, but you don’t cut back your main framework
Hey Laura, could you show us your ordering process this upcoming fall am how you plan out the plants for your containers? Also, my rose had aphids really bad so i sprayed a neem water solution I made myself. The rose is still losing many leaves and now I question if there is such a thing neem oil build up that could sufficates the leaves?
I planted a fragrant climbing rose 10 days ago. The scent was intoxicating, today I went to smell it and there was absolutely no smell!!!! Anyone had a similar situation??? I’m so sad!
I thought that too when I first got them, but when I’ve ordered online the bare root plants I’ve ordered are much more mature than roses I’ve gotten in pots. I do avoid those bare root roses in sleeves that sit around for ages at garden centers, however.
Your containers are so large you could actually plant an Oak tree in them. Way to large for a rose bush, at least that is my opinion. My roses do extremely well in much smaller containers. But,...to each his own!
I think container size maybe is in the eye of the beholder. These are about the smallest containers I’d plant anything in. It’s just a preference, but I’m a big container girl. By the way, these roses didn’t fare well and I removed the one that made it through the winter the following summer.
If you think you're seeing double, you're not! There was a glitch in this video the first time I uploaded it, and in order to fix it I had to delete the other one and reupload. Ok I really did think I was losing it! Thank you 🙂
The Impatient Gardener I come back to re-watch anyway. 💜👍
I love the design of your, “Front door!”
Love your videos, thank you! Thanks for sharing the info on insulating a planter, and thanks for sharing your perspective about peet. You have just the right blend of education, experience to share, and humor in your videos. Great delivery.
Yeah I`m with ya on the roses. Yeah I save my soil bags. Yeah I heard ice in the cup. Love your videos.
:)
I totally agree that a rose without scent isn’t really a rose🙂.
That rose is stunning!! I LOVE single roses and orange is my favorite color and they have a scent!! I'm going to figure out where I can put one!
So excited to see your Belgian fence come to life. You have inspired me to plant one next year. So excited for updates and can’t wait to learn what the dos and don’t are.
Love your frugalness and common sense! Thank you for sharing
Love David Austin roses. Can’t wait to see them bloom!
I have a Fighting Temeraire, it's my favourite rose of recent years and the scent is honey loveliness.
Shóna Quaid I’m so happy to hear this!
Can’t wait to see how they fared Winter 🤞🌸
I'll show them soon, but so far they look good!
I look forward to your videos Erin! Love your soil prep and look forward to seeing the clematis and roses blooming 🌸
Always enjoy following you and your process. Those containers are really, really good looking.
This looks beautiful!!! I'm so excited to see how they grow. I have been wanting to plant some new climbing roses but I feel like I have 100 things to do and I cant decide on a variety. 😆 But I am loving the ones you planted. 💕
I love those boxes! Thanks for the exciting share! I look foreword to watching these beautiful trees grow with you!
I knew you had a new video!! Lol! Glad it’s back now to watch! 😍
Great video. Thanks for discussing sustainability topics! Beautiful garden! Looking forward to following you this growing season! 🧚🏼🌹
It is nice to come home from vacation to live plants.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who saves and reuses compost bags! 😳
I will be watching next year about your container roses - I'm also in zone 5 and I've lost some in the damn ground. But the one I left in a pot and put in the garage lived. The problem with garage plants is that I never know how much to water.
i typically dont like orange flowers, but this sunset color is soooo pretty
the garden fence is well done
Your garden design and gate is looking epically beautiful! Love it !!
Cheers and blessings
🍃~r~🍃
very nice containers. i'll add those to my wish list for next year.
Love those pots. Absolutely beautiful 💜. Thanks for sharing!
I saw the large black puppy 😊🤩
look forward to seeing how these new roses do

@The Impatient Gardener Gah! I would be the same way, so I understand! I rooting for your success

It's going to be amazing. Love the plan.

Coco coir is a good alternative to peat :) I use it in my seed starting mix

I moved two a couple of years ago to a sunnier spot and they are so much happier, as am I! :)
Can’t wait for an update in summer on the roses. What kind of clematis are you going to plant and would you share where you order it from. The box store clematis always looks gosh awful. 😃
I ordered ‘Little Bas’ from Brushwood Nursery.
The Impatient Gardener I just ordered the Clematis Huvi and the Clematis Isabella. They were sold out of most everything! Leslie Hardin Stay tuned! I actually shot a video about clematis care, just need to find time to edit and post it.

Love the rose! I have Morden Sunrise which is very similar in looks but is hardy to zone 3. Soooo if you have any hardiness problems.
Michelle Van Heuvelen Good to know, thanks!
Hi Erin @impatientgardener,
Just saw the a video of your Newfoundlands. My friend Cat, who lives in Racine, WI, had two as well is this a Wisconsin thing?
is that gate new? It looks fabulous. Containers looking sharp too.
Hi Erin!! I’m also in zone 5 (upstate New York) and I have fallen for David Austin’s... my question is how you treat them for winter? Wrapped in burlap? Rose comes? Heavy mulching with compost? I’m so torn!

Will Higginbotham The nice thing with this Biochar Blend is that is is pre-inoculated and ready to use.
I looked up the name of that rose and the British Royal Navy ship of the same name, which, in French means "reckless." It's beautiful.
I have opposite problem, a large fiberglas container I'm worried will get too hot for my fussy Tanyosho Pine trees here in Texas. Do you know if I can get away with 1/2" insulation board? Or would I need to go the full inch? I'm frugal too:)
I think half-inch would help a fair amount, but I’m guessing.
Can waaaiit to see them blooing I do love roses🤗
My property has about 10 wild rose bushes. Man do they make me work to keep them tamed lol
Erin the video said April 28 2020 I live in Wisconsin like you and it was rain rain rain all day for the last three days so how were you working in the garden lol
Shot it last Saturday!
That's great! What did you use to cut the styrofoam sheets before placing them inside the planters?
S Just a box cutter and a straight edge.
What type of clematis are you going to plant and what color

Jack thanks! They had a bit of trouble getting going. I’m definitely missing some framework on them!
You didn't show firming the soil?
I swear I already watched this..... :)
You did! Sorry ... I had to reupload to fix that weird glitch.
@@TheImpatientGardener It wasn't that bad...only a few seconds :)
Is wearing gloves of different colors a thing now in gardening?
Hey Laura, could you show us your ordering process this upcoming fall am how you plan out the plants for your containers?
Also, my rose had aphids really bad so i sprayed a neem water solution I made myself. The rose is still losing many leaves and now I question if there is such a thing neem oil build up that could sufficates the leaves?

I go through that in the video but Organic Mechanics Container Blend is the primary component.
Thank you
