I live at the lake and can tell you that if you are on unfamiliar parts of the lake at night, it is very difficult to see marker buoys, especially when there is no moon. That being said, I don't go and get drunk with a $500,000 boat with 8 of my friends and travel around at 50 plus at night. My favorite wreck is when a guy picked up a couple of honeys at Horney Toads, handed the helm off to one of the girls so he could bandg the other on his 40 foot Sea Ray. She ran it up on the green of a golf course on mile marker 12. Good times.

I don't know, but I get real squishy when I'm flying - even at 20kts on a lake when I can't see in front of me due to darkness. So that means slow down. If I were the owner, I'd just put a motion detector our there with a huge flood light pointing in 3 directions off that point that instantly turns on and blinds the offending driver. Did I say that? I mean "warns" the offending driver. My boat had a radar on it.

Living here in MInnesota, we have far too many drunk, inexperienced and careless people operating boats where people get hurt or killed each year. You can’t change the lake landscape and you can’t light up every potential problem area.
You learn to operate your boat responsibly, under the visible conditions allowing the correct speed and navigation required and the driver must abstain from alcohol consumption. Anyone driving while under the influence (regardless of financial status or otherwise) of alcohol deserves a DWI and loss of privilege. There are people whom follow the law and drive/operate safely. They deserve to have safe passage on the lake without idiots ruining the day with people such as this example down in Missouri.

For those saying that point was too dark; really? Almost every house I see on the water has lights on it somewhere all the time, even if no one is there. The culprit was speeding while impaired. Most of us slow down at night & also, navionics charts can be used on a phone.

I had a 18' boat when I was stationed in Key West Florida. Some of the essential things for night time navigation was a good spotlight with a wide beam so you could see the channel markers, A good navigation chart, a good compass and lastly the brains to slow down when looking for and entering/navigating a channel. It's a whole different world out there on the water at night.
I imagine the state could put up navigation lights to mark the peninsular land mass but then the captain/driver of the boat has to know what they mean and which side to go on.

Been on lot's of different water ways, some are good others are bad. Signs posted by officials are nice, but almost every year a river or lake can change depth or add new hazards. The houses might had a small light on the end of their pier. But, it's on you to know and control your boat, been on sailing boats with lots of friends and the theme of the day was 'beer'. I have hit logs during the day as well as at night. So, Godzilla can be a problem.

I have been in the marine field most of my life in one way or another and used to love boating and riding motorcycles. I don't do either anymore because I have to spend way too much of my time watching out for what the other guy is going to do. For boaters I will give the benefit of the doubt and say that maybe 1 of a thousand people know the rules of the road (water) and out of them maybe only 10% pay attention to them. Once upon a time when there where few boats on the water and a fast boat was 40-45 MPH there was a lot more room for mistakes but those days are long past. I can't believe I am saying this but maybe what we need is training and licensing like general aviation for boat operators. I can't stand the thought of the government getting involved in another part of our lives but it may be unavoidable to make it safer for others on the water.

It's not the property owners responsibility to light up the shoreline for drunk / intoxicated boaters who are too irresponsible to operate their boat in safe and legal manner. They should have been motoring dead slow in the dark. I'm a lifelong boater and licensed USCG Captain in the PNW and have seen the bloody remains of this exact type of behavior, ejected dead bodies. Lots of booze and horse power does not end well. These folks are lucky they all survived and I hope the owner operator never is allowed to own or operate another boat

You stated the Owner should install lights, obviously from what you originally wrote you are not the owner of the property.
Also at the speed the idiot was going he likely would never have seen any lights to begin with. Have a good day.
