  • Replacing the rear wheel pivot bearings on an electric wheel chair. The unit is a Permobile C300 and to its credit sees very hard use by a young country girl. She has more than 4000 miles on the unit. I don't know how long they last but that seems impressive to me. Operating in an environment of snow and dirt roads means the bearings in this chair are up against more than the usual amount of grit. I have asked her to put a few miles on the idea for a long term protective fix for the water and dirt entering and killing these bearings. If it proves to be successful I will post how I did it and all the part numbers.
The kit I reference in the video costs $140+ It contains 2 bearings I was able to source at about $4, two O-rings that cost $.05, two metric machine screws that cost $.10, two custom washers and a tube of grease. Instead of $140 I think we can put out a list of part numbers where people can change their own bearings for about $15. Again let her put some miles on what she has and my solutions. If my idea works it will prevent the loss of the screws,o-rings and washers allowing their reuse. That would drop the price to about $5 to replace the bearings.

I am glad to see that you did the job with your helper. The markup on parts is nothing short of crime. I am all for making a profit, but that amount of markup is criminal.

I am a 63 year old para that just got a permobile 300 and this video is great! I too use mine in snow and dirt a run over all kinds of stuff. You are great to help fix her chair and I liked that you explained what you were doing. She sounds very smart and she will know how these things work. Thanks

Well if you have one we came up with a way to make those same bearings last many, many times longer. Made some protective covers for the unit using radiator hose as a cap. I will try and shoot some video of it so you can see. These bearings have not been changed or even tightened since this video was shot. By now she is at the 5000 mile mark on the chair. Normally she would have gone through at least one additional set. The test worked, I think all chairs should be retrofitted.

Thank You! That's nice that she has someone she can count on that won't gouge her. Unfortunately our Country seems to gravitate to the almighty dollar and overlook helping others. It is important for us that we help others in need. It's not always money, it can be carrying groceries, mowing a yard, opening a door or anything else. A smile works well too.

Wheelchair Reset for permobile wheelchair - hold buttons 3 5 6 togetAether and while holding those buttons turn the chair on 'all buttons will be flashing red' then press button 4 twice while wheelchair is flashing red then wheelchair works by itself, keep the wheelchair in an area with plenty of room while your wheelchair goes through the motions

My Jazzy 614HD has the same type caster bearing set up. I am having to replace the bearings every 8 to 10 months at a cost of about $200.00 We are going to attempt to replace the bearings ourselves and I think that this video will make it possible to do it. Thanks for the information.

My friends dad broke the joystick and the control panel. Do you know where, how, he can fix it himself at a way cheaper cost then the factory. Plus where can he get parts.

    Ugh, idiots!
Why would they use that type of bearing, it isn't the correct type for that use (don't know how to explain it lol)
That's so cool of you to be helpful like that! Looks like you are a great dad! xD

Would a auto parts store or hardware store match the bearings with a better grade part? ...my permobil is a c500, 2014 - does one size fit all permobil caster apps?

Yes all bearings of that dimension will fit, just match serial numbers. Absolutely there are different seals and quality ratings. We found covering the top bearing with a little cap, in spite of it being a sealed bearing increased its lifespan by 4X.

Do you have the dimensions of the bearings used? Wonderful video also.

I consulted the manufacturers parts guide online for my uncles powerchair bearings. It listed the dimensions but there were multiple options depending on the chairs size. They wanted about $45 for 2 bearings (Bounder). I found a part number on the bearing as well as the word "China". No surprise there.
I ordered some USA made bearings for $15. This was for TEN ball bearings and not TWO that Bounder wanted $45 for that are made in China. Find the part number on the bearing. Many of the bearings used are also used in other applications such as lawn mowers and go karts and are readily available online. IF you have ball bearings in the wheels also I would suggest replacing those at the same time as the castor bearings as shown in the video.

I should also mention that Bounder wheelchairs has their own part numbers and would not give me the real part number. I'm sure this applies to other wheelchairs also.
