  • Sabbath cover #150!!!
I'm not a huge fan of Breakout, for me this is a failed experiment. I know after Master of Reality the band started to experiment more and more, and for every good experiment (e.g. Supertzar) there's a not so good one, like Breakout. Luckily 'Swinging the Chain' salvages that whole ordeal being a fun rocker with a surprise vocal performance. Bill Ward, the band's original drummer, decided (or had to) sing vocals on this track. And I have to say, he's a really good singer. His voice fits this track very well, so well in fact that I can't imagine Ozzy singing this track. This, next to It's Alright, was also proof that Sabbath with different singer is still Sabbath. I've read somewhere that the chorus is directed at Ozzy and his behavior towards the band at that time. Not sure how true it is though.
Okay, the song. For me Breakout is just something you have to go through to play Swinging the Chain. The songs flow right into one another, so either survive through Breakout or just ignore it and jump right into 'Swinging...', your choice. I like the small inclusion of A Hard Road (a song I still have to cover) at around 5:10. Not sure if this is an intentional callback or Geezer just re-used the same pattern without really knowing he did that. Either way it's a nice inclusion. The only thing that I have a slight issue with is how jarring the transition is at 5:27. The parts don't blend into one another, instead it feels like the vinyl/CD/cassette just skipped and played a part from a different song. Other than that, great track!

The songs are from Black Sabbath's eighth album - Never Say Die!, released in 1978.

Awesome! After the Never Say Die tour, Bill should have launched his solo career right then and there! Nice one! Cheers!!
