Agree 10000000 %. I love this record too, even though the guys in the band pretty much disown it....there's a few so, so songs in there, but I give it a solid B
Tony, Geezer and Bill should have totally done a three-piece Jazz/Rock side project continuing off of these two tracks. Could have done them in between Sabbath albums

Great tunes from a brutally panned album. These songs, along with the title track, Johnny Blade, Juniors Eyes, Shock Wave, and Air Dance make for a collection of songs that expanded upon the experimental blueprint of Technical Ecstasy and honed it into the most diverse album Sabbath ever recorded. Sure , I could live without the cheesy Hard Road and twinkly Over to You , but otherwise a more solid, consistent effort than Technical Ecstasy.
This was actually the very first Black Sabbath album I happened to stumble upon. I guess I was lucky, because I still think it's one of their better. To me it feels like it has hints of "progressive metal", and progressive/power metal is the stuff I prefer nowadays... Don't know if this album shaped my future taste, or if this album just was an early match to the taste I already had, waiting for music that didn't exist yet. :P
Breakout and Swinging the Chain do blend together quite nicely, and the irony of an instrumental giving way to the Bill Ward lead vocal on the final track of the final Ozzy era Sabbath album isn't lost on me. This two song coda was actually a musical clue as to which member was on their way out of the original Sabbath lineup
I didn't know Bill Ward sang this. So this is his second song ( along with "It's Alright" from Sabbath Bloddy Sabbath). And I thought I knew all Sabbath trivia! Thanks for the info.
@@johnrobinson8368 "Solitude" is Ozzy. I know it doesn't sound like him, but trust me, it is. It's literally the only song he has ever sang completely in a low register.
Breakout sounds like it would be a great intro for an American cop show, Swinging the Chain is a Sabbath gem as is this whole album , special mention for IOMMI'S awesome solo on Johnny Blade, he makes that that guitar fucken howl & moan🕇👊🕇
@@bobthebear1246, it just seems so out of place with these lads. I mean... Come on! Who expected it? Ozzy had been itching to leave. It is hard to believe that Dio stepped in to save the day when it was likely most needed. If not, then this would have been the end.
I have been a fan of Black Sabbath since 1971 and am now 61. I was finally blessed to see them in November 1978 on the 'NEVER SAY DIE' tour, with Van Halen opening. The only years that I lost interest was when Ozzy was let go. To me NOBODY could fill his spot, and it took the four of them to be BLACK SABBATH. The odd thing was, Ozzy proved what he was capable of, without the other three.
I dig, but fans have to stop being so controlling (I was the same, so I understand our faults)... finally. I turned down a free black and blue ticket in Milwaukee which turned into a riot, I never turned down a free ticket again (not because I want to be in a riot but because I was an arrogant fan, never again) So I saw Mob Rules and Diary of a Madman and was branded with amazement,,,, still I agree, Sabbath get back together!!
Their replacement singer supposedly wrote most of this Melody...He must've been starstruck with Children of the Grave on these verses. Love the breakdown towards the end, with Nib singing like a veteran!! Such a Great overlooked Album
ya on this one, but Ozzy had left and was replaced by Dave Walker for a short bit, He was said to have written material for this album, and when ozzy came back He refused to sing any of it, so they got Bill to sing this one
I love love LOVE this song and Bill's singing of it. But I would die a happy man if I could hear Ozzy sing it once. If he ever did please link it to me.
yes ozzy disliking the jazz is why bil sings the other one. ozzy confirms this in his autobio ("i am ozzy"). also says the jazzmen used on this drank like fish.

Bill Ward sounds a bit like Jeff Lynne of ELO during that same era. Song starts-out well-enough, but kind-of loses its way after the guitar solo and becomes a bit of an unfocused mess. I do love"Breakout" though. That has a great jazzy groove to it, and it's definitely not what we would have ever expected of the Sabs.
Ok, so at 4:35 it sounds like they're trying to do something musically stupid. Then, that wailing at 5:02. Let's all fact it - this is their worst song. They were hitting the rock that night.
underated ?? possibly two of sabs weakest tracks! breakout is dull plodding jazz rock that goes absolutely nowhere and swinging the chain is a rowdy disjointed shambles sounding unfinished and demo like with its shaky howling vocal....how anyone can rate these tracks alongside the bands earlier catalogue is beyond me.
You hear plodding aimless jazz, I hear a decent groove; it would have made a great theme tune back then. Swinging The Chain is a great improvised jam; loads of energy.
I think Bill Ward is a very underrated vocalist. This song is a definite change of pace, yet it still sounds pretty good 37 years later.
Best sax solo as well. Out of any other song.
His solo albums, if you can find them, are incredible- especially the vocals.

Happy 70th birthday to Bill Ward
George Hahn
As I type this, and thinking back to the 70s, I am pleasantly surprised they're all still alive!
misterjohn john especially Ozzy

Yep!
Who's next?
Ozzy has to top contender!
Iggy Pop seriously abused his body, maybe him.
My minds blank now Lemmy has gone!
misterjohn john don’t forget Keith Richards lol

Yep, how does he do it!

A timeless and meaningful creation for Sabbath. Bill Ward is a great contribution as a singer.
I wish there were one or two Bill vocals on every Sabbath album, like Entwistle in the WHO, Bill's vocals are so underrated.
Bill's snare rolls are bang on the money
These two songs kick ass just like the other Sabbath songs. Enough said.
I'm not a jazz fan but really love the sound of it hear

Love that killer sax with Bills killer drum work Very underrated album along with Technical Ectasy ☺️☺️☺️☺️

The sax on this track is a throwback to Sabbath's beginnings as The Earth Blues Band when they had a saxophonist (and a rhythm guitarist).
Such a nice breath of fresh air.

I wonder if this is one of the ones Dave Walker wrote but ozzy refused to sing it
Officially that is the reason why Ozzy refused to sing on it, and why most of the songs in the album were lyrically heavily modified...
