Thank you very much, I appreciate that and appreciate u checkin it out!! I was definitely surprised on how well it did and the amount of penetration we were getting, was a fun one for sure. Thanks again!! Plenty on the way😁👍.
Definitely not a slouch. Good old school demonstration. Still a viable option for some folk. Not terribly practical. But some folk can avail themselves to self defense with these options. Thank you.
Try using the oooold LEE .451 cal. 183-190 grain roundnose backed by about 36-37 grains of FFFg. The loss of 50-75 FPS muzzle velocity means nothing at 100 yards. The conical gives MUCH higher impact and accuracy beyond 35 yards. Conical MUST be PURE lead, or they are nearly impossible to seat. I use Pyrodex P and real tallow for lube. .44 Special factory duplication load. Today, almost ALL lead has tin or antimony in it that hardens it and makes cast bullets lighter than spec. I sort my cast bullets by weight for accuracy.
To anyone doing this fun stuff, it’s good to cover the face of your chrony with some Saran Wrap so it doesn’t get goopy with bp residue (corrosive) and ball grease. Good video.
Bro trust it’s worth it i ordered a colt 1851 sheriff for 360$ and the cheapest pcp pistol I was looking to get was like 1250$ I did also get a holster, caps, balls, and if you don’t wanna buy all the extras just go with pryrodex pellets for less effort
Very cool test! It would be ineresting to see a test using conical slugs instead of balls. The penetration would probably be similar, but wound cavity damage may be a bit worse.
With 38 grains of 10+ year old 777 I get 1180 fps (6 shot average) from a 3rd Gen Colt 1860 with .454 143gr RB. And with 220 gr conical (I only had 2 with me in my box of roundballs at the time while having access to a cool guys chronograph at the Wateree range) but they were both 1100 + fps on his LabRadar with the same 38 gr charge. There is room for more if I don't use wads I can get 43 grains in but I think the velocity probably wouldn't change drastically. 38 gr is my standard self defense load and the Colt is my EDC. You rarely see anyone on this platform using 777 so it's good to know what it'll do.
@mypetvelociraptor LabRadar chronographs are more expensive, ($450.00+ ) but I will eventually buy a cheaper one or a used one possibly. It's nice to have access to one, but I'm in the process of looking for a house in NC with some property so until I can get somewhere I can shoot unrestricted I just don't need one. I rarely go to the range because it's an hour trip one way. I would like to see more people on RUclips using 777 because that's really where the power is. I'm always a little disappointed to see everyone using Goex or equivalent when velocity testing and then they act disappointed with getting low numbers out of their blackpowder pistols. The full size Colts and Remingtons are capable of very impressive power but not with 3FG real blackpowder. 4FG was what was used in the late 1800s and that was apparently very powerful stuff (Hazards Fine Revolver Powder). When I do finally get a chronograph, I'll be sure to post a video or something to demonstrate what they're really capable of.
No Thank you bro, I appreciate u letting me borrow ur setup to test. Had a blast making it. Glad u enjoyed it!! Gonna have to get me one now lol. Thanks again!!
I've been shooting black powder since the early seventies, and I've been telling people that they kill all out of proportion to their weight and size.. if you put a piece of bone in ballistic gel, and hit it, you'd see a whole different ballgame..
Very unique test, thanks for that. It surely is powerful. There is nothing dirtier to shoot then a blackpowder revolver. Bet you didn't like cleaning it afterwords.
I use 35gr with a wad for compression. Mine seems to burn really dirty at 40gr even though there is plenty of room for more. I also feel the acuracy drops
Next you gotta carefully saw a cross about 40% of the way thru a ball and test it. Do another with a hole drilled to the center. Do another doubleshotted (2 balls, same charge). Can also drill an 1/8" hole thru and tap a steel cone in to fit (essentially a lead saboted steel slug) and do a material penetration test. Theres a TON of little stuff you can do to alter the outcome.
A little off topic but based on your channel name I thought you might know. Is a gas piston air rifle easier to cock than a spring? Shopping for an air rifle and not very knowledgeable.
@@charlesphillips5906 Sorry bud just saw this. So yes and no, very dependent. A gas pistol will be very smooth but usually have a lil more resistance through the stroke. A springer will be easier to cock depending on power output but a lil more gritty feeling and sounding. Weihrauch has some of the best and most accurate springers u can get ur hands on. Also can be tuned to perfection. Hope that helps😁👍.
No lol, maybe if it’s from a muzzleloading rifle with a heavy charge of powder but from a revolver they don’t even compare to a 9mm. A 147 grain 9mm hollow point is 7 grains heavier than these round balls and easily expands to .50 or .60 cal, not to meant it’s going a couple hundred feet per second faster. People survive those all the time and practically never lose any limbs after.
That simple round ball does an impressive amount of damage at modest velocity. Enjoyed the vid, thanks for sharing!

I have that same Pietta target model = great revolver. You can use 40 grains of Pyrodex to push that velocity. Interesting results! Thanks!

More damage than I expected. Pretty cool.
Great video. I used to shoot a lot of black powder but never saw it gel tested. Enjoyed it.
Any chance of you doing the same test again, but with a conical?

Great test, amazing results, Hollywood wasn't off by showing holes straight through guys when clint eastwood shot this in the westerns

I’d love to see these results compared to a conical.
Wow😮! That’s crazy and such little velocities. I’m so impressed. Imagine 35 grains of 777.
You're getting .38+P performance out of your black powder revolver around 950 fps. there's tests online

That's awesome. One of the best tests I ever seen. Blackpowder is pretty cool.
I ran down a rabbit hole thanks for answering my thought process so I didn't have to do it lol
Elmer Kieth liked shooting his 36 cal. cap and ball and described it as being a better game bullet than the best 38 Special load .
Glad to see non-potato C&B test. HOpe to see a 36 and Walker some day.
The Army versions in .44 were designed and intended for cavalry troopers to kill horses with them. They worked.
Thanks for putting in that work bro. That was awesome! I appreciate ya!

The Lyman manual says 36 gr fff is going 995 fps, with a round ball !
That is insane!
Any videos using the 45cal Conversion Cylinder in this Remington ???????

I get so much good data from this ghetto channel. Keep up the good work.
Cool!
Now imagine how much penetration a cannon ball in the civil war would get.
30gr sounds a little low. I bet it could do better. The walkers did 50-60g blackpowder. I would think this could do 40.
