We hiked in to Hanakapi'ai on our honeymoon in 1980. We were going to hike to the falls, but we couldn't find the trail. At that time, there were a lot of indigent white folks robbing backpackers for their supplies, so we hiked out and camped w/o permit at the nearest beach park. Several months later the Kauai officials cleared out all the indigents, gave them one way tix to the mainland. We were sorry we didn't get to the falls, but the tension was alarming. This is a gorgeous spot.
