- A while ago, a group of my viewers decided to host a design competition, in which the winner would have their design built by me. The catch being, I was not allowed a place a vote. Instead, my fate was placed in the hands of the judges.

🕵️♂️ WHO AM I?:
My name is Matt Estlea, I'm a 25 year old Woodworker from Basingstoke in England and my aim is to make your woodworking less s***.
I come from 5 years tuition at Rycotewood Furniture Centre with a further 1 year working as an Artist in Residence at the Sylva Foundation, which is where I began growing my business. I then returned to Rycotewood to teach Evening Classes for 2 Years, while also teaching City and Guilds Furniture Making for 3 years. They were some long 12 hour days!
In September, 2021. I resigned from teaching at the school to focus on my own business.
In addition to all that studying and teaching during the week, I occupied my weekends working at Axminster Tools and Machinery in Basingstoke. For 5 years, I helped customers with purchasing tools, demonstrated in stores and events, and gained extensive knowledge about a variety of tools and brands. I discontinued this job role in 2019 to focus on teaching at Rycotewood and my own business.
During the week, I film woodworking projects, tutorials, reviews and a viewer favourite 'Tool Duel' where I compare two competitive manufacturers tools against one another to find out which is best. I also have a Free Online Woodworking School which you should definitely check out!

I like to have a laugh and my videos are quite fast paced BUT you will learn a lot, I assure you.
Lets go make a mess.

If there was someone who could make osb look good on a project like this. I expected it to look hideous, actually ended up looking almost like an inlay of cork or something and blended a lot better than I'd have imagined.
The first half of the ruclips.net/user/postUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.
Huh….not a great idea to flush that OSB. Ideally you want it a mm or so proud to that when you catch your fingernail on it the splinters really get chance to penetrate. Otherwise nice work.
What I love about OSB is how the saw dust feels on my skin. I'm allergic to whatever they use as a binder in it. Stuff makes me feel like I'm on fire! So no matter how hot it is if I have to cut OSB it's long sleeves for me.
Evil, pure evil.
@@1pcfred Oof, that sounds painful
@@cvoges12 it can be. Fortunately OSB costs too much now for me to work with it anymore. It has gone up in price 10X over what it used to cost.
@@1pcfred Yeah, prices are crazy rn. It was like $1/ft of 2 by 4 here for a while
There is a lot of talent on the interweb, but true craftpersons are rare. 10/10
If a burglar would find a box like this, he would carefully empty the box and take the box home.
*box filled with priceless watches* "screw the watches man, I want the box! Do you see the dovetails on those joints..."
@@mitcheld123 “Look at the short-grain frame! Risky move but beautiful.” *Proceeds to empty the box*
@@H0DAX1 “Bro, they used plywood as a decorative finish on the front of it, some may say it’s tacky but damn does it tie the whole thing together!”
He would just grab both. A good box with free loot to pay for the trip.
I was so hoping you made a second "dummy" box so you could "accidentally" take a fall and drop it, but your ending was good to....lol awesome build!!
I was waiting for the moment of an "oops" fall at the end as well with a dumby box
@@Bluejsa1 Me too, and you know he was setting it up like that too. The wording and framing he used had a lot of foreshadowing.
Historians in a hundred years won't understand why such a perfect box would have OSB as the centerpiece.
They'll wonder why it wasn't all made from osb, it will be recognised as the most expensive wood known too man 🤣
It made me see OSB in a different light and kind of liked it. I think he should have burned in My Little Pony in it.
In 2021 OSB shot up to $70 a sheet so it is a coveted luxury material these days.
@@chriss9340 ccd ccdccd z
The contrasting randomness of the OSB Inlay against the darker directional grains of the rest of the box... Beautiful!
It seems contrary to even think of, yet that minimalist addition of OSB actually kind of makes this stand out against other similar boxes.
This must have been a greatest video Ive seen on youtube and such a nice gesture. Hands down youre beyond black belt.
I was holding my breath as Matt walked down the walkway, and hoping he wouldn’t trip and drop the box.
Same haha, would have been hilarious if he used a prop box, drops it, camera pans down and it's just a pile of splinters and broken glass haha
@@whirled_peas I really wish they would have done that. I was quite nervous for that box though.
Idk why, the way they shot the video made me think he was going to drop it too.
The fact he actually did this when he had no say in the competition and it wasn’t even a competition started by him that in itself deserves a subscription and then his amazing skills deserve the like button

This project ended up becoming more of an art piece than a wood working piece, well done!
That box is a freaking work of art! Always impressed by your abilities and thankful that you share them with all of us to enjoy.
I love that the OSB is a joke, but that the finished product shows that it really doesn't matter what you use if you're creative, skilled, and patient enough. It is actually a really cool look.
That's what I tell people when I sell them case hardened knives out of mild steel.
@someguyontheinternet dotcom it was just a joke I usually just use EN54 or D2 depending on whether or not I want to treat them a lot or a little.
D2 is harder than EN54 so EN54 requires more treatment to get the rockwell number to where it likes to be

Outstanding mate... bet you feel much better after you've done it rite
Funnest video yet on my woodworking journey
Ok... I'd never have considered OSB on the front of something... but that is actually a pretty fun look as an accent to the rest of the box... which also seems like accents to eachother... so many accents...
There's so little of it that it's not as offensive as in standard uses, at least on the screen. Kinda looks like cork
Wow. Complex is right. Nice execution
That box is gorgeous.
I searched wood PC case and this came up O.o not complaining though, did give me some ideas.
Beautiful work Matt! Never really saw finished OSB incorporated with other beautiful hardwoods.
Thank you John :)
Looked like a nightmare that you handled far more delicately than I would have been able to !
Absolute master craftsman. Thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and very jealous of your workshop.5*
May you live long and keep all your fingers
He said "I made a simple hold down jig...." Sir, that is a weekend project for me.
You're a quick worker Chris. Planning that would take ME a week. Back when I was a lad, we used to DREAM of making a jig over a weekend...
I was thinking the same thing. More time spent making jigs than building the thing.
Well, according to Ian N and Blue Wren I am an intermediate woodworker now :)
@@Raven.flight Luxury!
@@chriss9340 I don't even really know what a hold down jig is, so you've all made a lot of progress lmao
Ok this box “WAS” going to be the best of all .. UNTIL the OSB came into play lolll Nice ending 😂 Incredible challenge , Matt well done 👍🏼
But name one other box ever made in the history of man that features OSB as an ornamental wood, let alone its centerpiece. This box is one of a kind, first of its kind, $1,000,000
How this guy doesn't have a million subscribers - I have no idea...
Cheers Alexander 😘
i think the answer to that, is lack of videos. he's not active enough to get a huge following. if you look at other channels with more than a million followers most of them post regularly and often. the content is definitely good enough.
At this rate if he can make videos at least once a month he should be able to get to half a million pretty quickly
Piece of art. Your camera man needs a raise
I have a hunch Matt would second that. He would like a bit more in the community chest.
You're a genius
i must say regardless of the head ache that is a very sexy box :)
A lot of Matt's content is fun woodwork-related content, and then occasionally he drops something like this (or the woodwork school) to make everyone sit up and realise that he's actually an incredible craftsman not just a youtuber. Fantastic stuff!
I'm happy that craftsmen like this do youtube video's but very saddened at the same time that craftsmen like this are going youtube videos.
@@chrisanthony579 I am a craftsman like this and I am incredibly happy that Matt and many others are making these videos. It's causing a resurgence in our field which is undergoing a weird transition as young people have mostly turned to office or gig type jobs, not wanting to get their hands dirty. My own career is a result of some of these early videos and it's affected my life in many positive and surprising ways. Don't be sad! We need people to get inspired and interested and join our ranks. There's a shit ton of work to do.
@@ruben9912 I don't mean any disrespect to the folks that do the RUclips thing. Actually I learn a lot from many of these very talented people and the industry needs people to inspire. My point being that for many of these gifted craftsmen like Matt, its sad that there's much more money in making video's than actually crafting and trying to make a living in woodworking. Those talented people that try to make a living working wood are making cabinets and book shelves. For the most part the market doesn't allow them to show their true talents.
Haha. OSB.
*looks at the floor to ceiling OSB wardrobe doors I made*
Don't worry, I put nice angled trim on the edges so those nasty spliters can't get me.
i love the idea that in 60 or so years that will end up in a 2nd hand store and people will wonder what the hell an OSB inlay is doing in such a well made box. or why their grandpa had some weird jewelry box tucked away somewhere.
I know it's obvious but damn dude! You're a talented furniture maker... that serious quality work there!
This is Matt! Soo good!
"the cold never bothered me anyway"!
Beautiful box and great video! Although I must say Matt I think your taste in driving music has taken a turn for the worse 👀
Tool seemed to be less… sentimental I guess?
Next level . Spot on video, love the story
This is the first video of yours I have seen, really cool! Will be subscribing.
What a beauty
It looks like someone with no design knowledge just raided the scrap bin and put that box together. But they did a great job of it. The craftsmanship is first rate.
Hi Matt, please, is possible to find your box plans somewhere? I would like to try make your wonderful box. Thx.
Hi Mario the plans for this box are being made available for fan club members to make. Matts included a link to the fan club above!
Matt, your channel and builds are incredible! So glad I stumbled on your channel today, it’s inspiring for my own builds and videos!!
Seriously man, your editing and story is superb.
What a lovely piece, good job :)
I hate how much I love the OSB feature 😍
Also Matt, I tried but can't leave comments on your blog, I keep failing the captcha even though I'm _really_ confident that I know the correct answer to 5 x 3
Well, I'm _kinda_ confident...
😁
Looks great
I was half expecting you to drop the box at the end...
Nice piece!
I’d have been pretty upset if he had! But it would have been on brand
He could have taken pictures of the real box, printed them and stuck them on a plain replica to shatter all over the ground, just for effect.
This is why I don't understand people that say I must be patient because I work with hand tools. At least next time I know who I can point them to to find patience.
Well done, it really shows!
The winning designer is definitely your "Lex Luther" type of fan. Your "Challenge Accepted" and deep thought at points means he really did challenge you. Turned out great. Even the OSB inlay looks great as an accent, and I really did not think it would. The jig to hold the top flat for assembly was a "next level" solution and it would have taken many of us much longer to do that jig. Your ingenuity has come a long way, young man. This is why I enjoy your channel, You help me think not only outside of the box, but around the corners as well. I can most assuredly learn something from channels like yours, Torbjorn's, Pask's, and many others. Thanks.
I like that you compared me to Lex Luther! Have to say watching the behind the scenes that Matt does made me feel guilty at the challenges I set him.
The end is exactly what my mob do to me when I make them something bespoke 😭🤬
I feel your pain
Dont worry I love it really!!
12:00 - door opens again.
“its not up to spec”
I know it’s a relatively small part of the video but the way the cuts were synced with the music was so satisfying to me
So the guy who designed it is a sadist AND an ingrate? :)). Fabulous ending.
So who's the man that made the competition
The completion was run by the admins on the Matt Estlea fan club on Facebook and I was the lucky designer who won.
I never thought you could make OSB decorative.
You can't.
Glad I stumbled upon this channel randomly. Have a like and subscribe for such an amazing job well done

You know you've not really done any joinery in 10 years when your brain automatically thinks of pizza with the mention of dominoes....
I get that feeling after 10 minutes of no joinery. The curse never fades.
I thought of the game tiles
Am I the only one here who was terrified that he was going to drop the Box while delivering it? He felt like he kept building up to explaining how he accidentally smashed the thing or how it somehow got damaged during transit...

nice work. I would have die colored the osb to make it stand out, but would the die penetrate? I don´t know!

One important note though...one of the absolute best parts of your videos is the slow, and very -learn-this-yourself-inviting, pace that you've always had...please, don't go down this road of video-editing..there are billons of fast-paced, quick-shift, music-laden tosspot videos online, where you, basically, only get the result and just glimpses of 'how you got there'..there's only one Matt, and losing the teaching/learning element from your videos would be devastating. Damn you better be careful showing all that wood, that's at least 5-10m dollars of wood in todays market Lol.

Nice work on the jewellery box Matt! Thanks for sharing it with us!💖👌👍😎JP
Hand planing OSB is something I never expected to see but works a treat. I feel bad for that iron though
The iron doesn't care. It is an inanimate object. Feel bad for the poor slob that has to sharpen it. We need a new video series titled, "Can You Hand Plane It?" Where the host hand planes various unlikely materials in each episode and we see what kind of finish is achieved and how the tool fares doing it. I've personally hand planed some pretty odd stuff myself. You can hand plane Plexiglass for instance. Works pretty good.
@@1pcfred plexiglass?!? Really?!? I never would have thought. Wow
@@1pcfred I would TOTALLY watch that series
Great vid. It always trips me out to see finished OSB and how good it can look. One question though; and I've never used stabilization, so speaking out of ignorance here, but I was wondering if stabilization could have helped with some of the short grain issues or if that's just too much to expect from the process?
You certainly could do it. Although it might make the dovetailing a bit brutal on the chisels 😂 I don’t have the equipment anyway. Otherwise, good shout to be fair!
This drawer design seems like a bit of a shitpost, intentionally difficult, the fucking OSB inlay. This thing is a huge meme. They probably voted on it just to troll you.
Alternative Title, "Jon Snow, once again, is enduring pain for a sadistic audience."
Love the ending! Great upload! In fact, one of your best. Thanks!
This is the backwards box! Usually people use cheap osb and then try and hide it using a quality veneer, not the otherway around! 😂😂
that moment when all that chip board is more expensive then the hardwood of the box
Regarding the long grain problem: What about gluing a long grain reinforcement in out of sight? Warp issues?
This simple box is a triumph of overdesigning.
Nice Matt... Headbangin' on Let it Go - Frozen...
started watching your channel about 3 years ago and admittedly I got bored, found the performance quality poor and unentertaining (but still educational), and now taking another look I see you've really stepped it up a notch, very entertaining and high quality edit so thanks for your content looks like I'll be a regular viewer again. I only have my lack of patience to blame
Personally I hate beaver barf (OSB) as OSB like particle board is just crap. MDF just doesn't look like wood no matter what the piece is for shop project or not. It just so bland. That being said excellent work. This piece may have been a pain but at the very least it got you one more subscriber.
Well done man. I am just getting started out in woodworking and I would be happy being half as good as you are. I really enjoy your content! You have a perfect balance of fun, information and inclusion. If your video photographing editor/ content creator has a RUclips channel, I would really love to get some good tips and tricks from them as well :) Cheers! :p
Matt edited this himself!!
I thought he was gonna drop the box and broke the glass or something. However, the straight forward ending is technically subverting my expectations. Cheers.
Your woodworking skills are impeccable and paralleled by your humor which is finely honed ( pun intended) loved the video Youngblood!
I can't believe Matt drove with the box in the front seat without a seatbelt. Scandalous. For the safety of our children, they belong in the back, strapped for life. Terrific video production, and a work of art by a very talented craftsman. Bravo.
I'm genuinely surprised at how nice the OSB looks in that application. Great work!
That OSB inlay would have been perfect for the underside of the short-grain parts...
An entertaining video of a woodworker building something designed like crap and explaining why its crap design? YT decided to shove me in here and I think I'm staying.
