@@CapturedInWords hello, would you consider reading the Elric saga? The Witcher books took major inspiration from them (in main characters and worldbuilding: Geralt, Yennefer, Triss, Dandelion and Ciri are essentially Elric characters: Elric, Myshella, The Rose von Bek, Wheldrake and Oona). And as for the world goes: a multiverse with elemental planes and a cataclysmic event known as the Conjunction of Spheres, a dark medieval European fantasy setting and powerful sorcerers, as well as philosophical musings about Chaos and Law. To be honest, I prefer the Witcher books, and the stories, writing style and character development are vastly different, and the Witcher does have many original elements in it (on paper, the similarities seem far more blatant than they are, except for the world and Geralt, even though he doesn't have a Stormbringer). Also, I really like your Stormlight Archive content (that Way of Kings summary was brilliant)
I love how you make these videos so lively and aesthetically pleasing. Im currently reading the last book of witcher saga (technically) The Lady of The Lake and it emotionally drained me. I hope that you will make videos about every books in the series.
"I love great dialogue. It matures many a story. Alas, I find any story, book or cinema, fall short of splendid tales if the dialogue is bland or cliched."
I started listening to the audio book for Sword of Destiney after finishing the Last Wish. Great book so far I'm loving it. Really liked your video as well.
I kind of skipped Sword of Destiny in order to start Blood of Elves right away, but having watched your review I feel like I should definitely catch up on the short stories :)
Did Blood of Elves make sense to you jumping right in like that? :o Hopefully you got to read Sword of Destiny and catch up on all the important details! :)
Fantastic video Jay! I am much like you, I came to the books after the games but not before the Netflix show. This is a great video as to why you should read this book. I will be going to back to Sword of Destiny soon to continue my read of the Witcher series.
The ending alone made it one of my favourite short stories. But I love a bitter sweet ending. The only other short story ending which was on par ‘imo’ was Something More. I was disappointed with how bad Netflix screwed up the ending. The ending only works when Geralt and Ciri already know each other and have a strong emotional connection. Having it being their first interaction together was just weird. With season two of the shows they’ll now need to play catch up. Sadly I’m less optimistic about the tv series as a whole now :(.
I actually weeped even twice (so that's about this "men don't cry:)) - I absolutely adored the story about Essi, the same goes for the end of Something more when Ciri meets Geralt.
I've just started The Last Wish, after finishing the whole Mistborn series (a bit of a break from Brandon Sanderson). I've got to say that I only choose my books now after watching your videos and listening to what you have to say about them! 🙂 I've never watched The Witcher or played any games (I think the last time I played a game was Harry Potter with my nephew some good 18 years ago!), so this new witcher world is all new for me. I've checked some local libraries and they have the second book as well, so I guess I'll be reading Andrzej Sapkowski for a while. Hope you and your mum are well. P.S.: I'm still waiting for a video about Fitz and the Fool. 👍🙂
I'd recommend reading the Elric series by Michael Moorcock. His series *HEAVILY* inspired The Witcher and large parts of modern fantasy from Sanderson's Warbreaker, with Nightblood, to Darkstar in ASOIAF. Definitely worth a read.
I remember my uncle telling me all about the Elric series and I read one of the stories years ago! I was actually thinking about it again recently after reading Warbreaker, and I think I'll definitely be reading through the series soon, and when I do I will for sure be making some videos on it
@@CapturedInWords It's definitely worth it just to see where some tropes of fantasy caame from and they're pretty short too (the longest at around just over 200 pages if that). If you think Geralt can be angsty though, wait till Elric starts up a dramatic monologue!

@Leanda Brooks can't really think of a similar writing style. Sapkowski really heavy on dialogues and interaction between characters to advance the plot.
@@LeandaBrooks did you read the books yet? I saw a Polish commenter under a different video saying the books are sort of meant to be a satire of high fantasy, so like how Tolkien has everyone act honourably and behave themselves, Geralt will see a mermaid and think "great boobs" haha! (and let's face it, a lot of us would probably think that). Apparently the satire didn't translate as well in the English translations but I still love the books, especially Last Wish, Sword of Destiny, and Season of Storms. They're so funny and I love the Witcher spin on old fairytales :D
Great video. I think the series screwed up many things with regards to how the story needed to be told. The sadness shown by Ciri when departing from Geralts side for the first time really made the ending of SOD that much more of a tear jerker when you have this overwhelming feeling of relief they are reunited. The series not only forged the first time they meet incorrectly but also decided to throw in a weirdly irrational peice of dialog ( who's Yennifer) ... I mean WHAT THE F*CK Netflix !?
