Loving your book reviews. One thing many people gets wrong about this book (including the developers of the game series) is assume that Geralt’s last wish was for Yennefer fall in love with him. Sapkowski never tells us exactly what the last wish was, in fact, there are strong evidence by the end of the series that the last wish was something very different. Before reading the books I was a Triss guy myself, but after reading it I understood why it had to be Yen.

why Tris? it is very evident from 1st saga book that Tris only was attracted to idea of Geralt because of her own loneliness and desperation. Beside she was very condescending in the Blood of elves.
On a different note, the bruxa story was my favourite of all stories in the last wish book, and I have a feeling the geralt and Yen story will end the same; two social outsiders who end up feeling Real Love upon destruction of each other ( I havent finished the books so please do not spoil haha)

Yennefer and Geralt relation changes very much with time. Yen changes. Geralt changes. To have a great journey you have to start somewhere.
Geralt make the decision as an answer to "what do you really want? " question.
And in Las wish Yen manipulate Geralt but as well make rescue plan for him after she gave him a lasson. She cures Dandalion.
Triss is awlays good with her words and nice and then stab you in the back.
Yen is blunt and sasy but will always go to youre rescue. Even if cost is sky high.

And I don't want to post specific examples or spoilers for the saga in a book review for The Last Wish but boy, are you plain wrong. She consciously threw Geralt, Yennefer and even Ciri under the bus later in the saga knowing exactly what it is she's doing to them- and yes- she felt oh so guilty about it and tried to redeem herself for it later, but that doesn't mean she didn't stab them in the back.

Hey love your channel, have been watching all your vids since your review of The Blade Itself. The Last Wish is actually next on my TBR, I'm really excited to read it, I've heard nothing but good things. So I'm currently reading through the original Conan The Barbarian stories written by Robert E. Howard in the 1930s, and I just have to say, they are really, really good and I can't recommend them enough to you. I'm going to take this time now to try and convince a fellow fantasy lover to read Conan The Fuckin Barbarian, because it's so so good and underrated as hell. Howard wrote about a dozen short stories and one full length novel, The Hour of the Dragon, about Conan's various adventures throughout his life. From when he's the King of an empire, to a swashbuckling pirate, to battles with dark sorcerers, to dungeon crawling encounters with cosmic Lovecraftian horrors. If you like beautiful prose, magic, adventure, wonder, horror, action, and great characters, then I highly recommend checking out the short story The Tower of the Elephant as the one to read first. It's a damn classic and awesome as hell. It's only 3 chapters long and can be read in like 15 minutes, yet it's so good and so well written that it's as satisfying as a full novel. Beyond the Black River, Red Nails, The Slithering Shadow, A Witch Shall Be Born, and Queen of the Black Coast, are also all fantastic. The novel Hour of the Dragon is amazing as well but I still recommend atleast reading Tower of the Elephant first to get a taste of the style. The stories can be read in any order. This is just me shamelessly trying to get you to read and review some Conan. lol

As a huge fan of the books, who read them back in the 90s, I could not be more excited for the game adaptations - which all were pretty good, I didn't finish 2 and 3, but I really liked the original Witcher 1 and got really into the 3, but just after 250 hours into 3, I just lost interest in finishing it - but I had a blast while playing (I just rarly finish games, I never finished Skyrim, Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout IV and even Baldur's Gate 2 - and I absolutely love those games, just never had the time to actually play them from start to finish).
I never had a big problem with depictions of characters in the Witcher games, except that Triss is not a redhead in the books, and she has long, straight hair and not some weird hairdu they gave her, but I just chalk it up to her changing and character growth, Ciri and Yennefer are fine, and Geralt is fine - but he shouldn't wear a beard in part 3 - in the books he states it makes him go crazy, so I think he wouldn't wear it even in later life, but you can shave in 3 so it's a mechanic I often use - no problem there.
What I really have is a problem with the Netflix adaptation - it's terrible for depicting character completely not how they are written in the books, and the race swapping is outragious. I couldn't stomach that travesty and gave up on episode 3. Never again. I'll stick to the books for the story, and maybe go back to witcher 3 for the gameplay, but nothing else....

really love the fairy tail, moral of the story feel to these (only read this and SoD so far)
never played the game, for me their friendship is believable, romantic relationship is, ya pretty toxic, co-dependentish wanting-and-settling and wanting, it feels pretty authentic.
Geralt's wish: I interpreted this as him wishing for himself to fall in love as much as Yen. So much of his inner dialogue is wondering if he's still human enough to feel, reminiscent of good Rice, Dr. Manhattan, any Tolkien inspired long lived individual. There is a subtlety and depth here that I don't always get.
I found the LW more successful than SoD, the time jumping structure worked a bit better in that one, but enjoyed them both, will continue probably, but quite a few other books on the list first (thanks Mike)

Geralts Djinn wish was to be ABLE to love? That would mean his & Yens love is real. If Witchers apparently don't have emotions, how could they love? That's a great and satisfying theory- Geralt wished to be able to feel emotion/love.

I've read the 2 short story collections and the first 2 novels so far, but I've never played the games so here's my 2 cents if you're interested. So far The Last Wish is definitely my favourite. I really enjoyed the dark tone combined with the fairy tale re-telling vibe and the moralising/philosophising that the (excellent) dialogue gets across. I also thought that the short story format was a pretty unique and original way to start a fantasy series, I've not seen that done before and it really worked. Tbh I was a little disappointed when I got to the novels, because it's got a very different (imo) feel to it. The moralising gets a little diluted and the dialogue loses a bit of its snappiness. I also kinda thought that the plot was paced too slow and the fairy tale aspects went missing, but both of those are personal preference things. I liked it enough to be carrying on with it, but I don't feel like I've got the same love for it that a lot of the gamers who read it seem to have.

    • @mikesbookreviews
      @mikesbookreviews  5 лет назад

I figured as much, in regards to people who have invested in the characters already via the games. I certainly don't expect the novels to have the breakneck pace this book did. I'll come back to this after I read some of them and see if I feel similarly.

Andrzej Sapkowski never planned Witcher to be a series. It was kinda a happy accident. It all started as a single story written for literary contest for Polish sci-fi/fantasy magazine called "Fantastyka". Sapkowski got 3rd prize. Readers loved his story very much -they wanted more. So Sapkowski started to write next short stories. Few years later publisher released two collections which are considered prologue to the novels. Just few years ago Sapkowski wrote Season of Storms which is sidequel novel set between events from short stories. It should be read as last, because there are slight hints about saga's ending.

To elaborate, it is also worth mentioning that the order of short stories in the books is different to the order they were written in, somewhat. In essence: the first four stories in The Last Wish, are the first written. They were published in magazines, and together with a story "Road with no Return" which does not feature Geralt, but is set in the same world and features charachters that have a strong connection to Geralt, published in a collection simply called "The Witcher". After that, the first stories from "Sword of Destiny" were written, and also published in magazines, and then published as the whole thing. By that time Sapkowski had the saga in planning (which is obvious, as "Something more" is basically the first chapter of the novels) So the first stories were republished, with addition of two new ones, "The end of the World", and " The last Whish", as well as the framing story "the voice of reason" to fill gaps in narrative, as "The last Whish" collection, with explicit intention to become the first book.

    • @ImVeryOriginal

Yeah the games making Triss a viable choice is probably the biggest breakaway from the books. I don't hate it but it's completely out of character for book Geralt after what already happened between them and how strong the bond between Geralt and Yen is. But I'm okay with treating the games as glorified fanfiction.
