This one is more dark and sad, Iowa's one seems more angry. I think they're both brilliant, but the whole of MFKR seems like the lead singer is caving in under the weight of his own despair, while IOWA does the opposite, having the lead snap and project all of his anger onto an uncaring world.

    • @vaudvillevillain_

Both are amazing. It seems like this one sounds more like depression, where the Iowa version sounds more angry. They suit their individual albums.

Wow.. almost two decades after this was one of my favorite songs to play on guitar, I come to youtube and find that many people out there are still discovering it today. Back then Donnie Steele was giving me guitar lessons. The guy is the most humble man you'll ever meet. When I started taking lessons he never mentioned a thing about having been in Slipknot. I didn't know he was in it until one day I read the credits section of a website dedicated to the MFKR album. I remember asking him about it ("Were you in Slipknot?") and I'll never forget how much it was not a big deal to him -- he basically said, "Yes. Did you practice your scales?" I begged him for weeks to teach me this song. I always told him how great it was, and he would counter with, "if you think THAT'S great, check out this Black Sabbath/Pantera/Megadeth song I brought to teach you." He genuinely regarded this song as no big deal, though I always thought of it (and still do think of it) as a masterpiece. He eventually did teach it to me and I have his handwritten guitar tabs somewhere. But he never acted like it was a big deal that he wrote it, and was more interested in his current music with Killpact, etc. All of the people here saying they hear "Metallica", you are correct. They were a big influence on Donnie's music. He was/is a traditional "metal" guitarist, through and through. Years ago, long after I stopped taking lessons and moved away, I needed a musician for my wedding and looked up Donnie on Google.. only to find that he had stepped in to play bass for Slipknot. I figured he probably didn't have time for something like wedding duty. Lol. However I can guarantee you if I would have contacted him, he would have done it with pleasure -- one of the best guys you'll ever meet. Loved Mountain Dew, his Jeep Cherokee, and his family. If I forgot to give him his $10 for the week, no big deal -- "hit me next week" he would always say. Donnie could make any guitar sound beautiful but I'd bet if you asked him for a suggestion, he'd tell you to pick up an Ibanez. If I saw Donnie today somewhere, I can promise you the first thing he'd ask me is, "have you been practicing your scales?" Donnie if you are out there buddy I just want to say I'm proud of you and hope all is well. You used to tell me I played guitar like Marty Friedman which is hilarious because I'd consider myself more of a Robert Wilson.

growls. And no. There is a reason Slipknot is successful now and struggled back then. Corey and Jim Root saved the band. Anders was good but it sounded a lot like a Pantera cover band ( Maybe that is why some people love Anders his vocals more). But Corey gave Slipknot a new sound that no one heard at that time. Say what you want about Corey Taylor but he brought energy to the band. Again not saying Anders sucks (In fact I would trade most of the emo core bullshit for someone with his talent). He just didn't do anything big with the band. Tbh they wouldn't even be making music if it weren't for the right moves they made by getting a new vocalist.

    Verse 1 (Anders)
Gently, my mind escapes into the relaxing mode of pleasure
A pleasure that will take my mind off of the realities of my life
My past life. Life as I know it now
And whatever may come, it slowly disappears
To somewhere in the back of my mind - it will remain there 'til I wish to retrieve it
    [Verse 2] (Anders)
Yes, I will stay here for awhile, for I need the break
A break from the pressures of life
And everything that lay in the palm of life's hands
    Life's hands
This mode is incredible. It's out of this world
Too bad I must always leave it. Oh, but that's life. (That's life.)

3:50 and onwards has got to be my favorite part, personally. Yes, I do love the whole song...but for me that part is awesome. I love Anders' vocals and growls on this. Love that thick and heavy guitar too with the percussion. Brutal.

    • @sludge.eater6
      @sludge.eater6 4 года назад +9

Nah I think its just a different sound. The guitar tone for everything Slipknot has done sounds great. This is a more beefy sound compared to the others which have more of a skronky sound. All the albums sound different but you can still tell that its Slipknot. Thats what is a big part that makes them amazing.
