I use a '76 studiomaster 16-8-4 myself. Really love these old home mixers, the pres sound super unique and give my work a character I couldn't otherwise find. Cool to see I'm not the only one 🎉
Just looked that studiomaster up. What a beauty. Especially if you found one in decent condition. Might have limitations, but I bet it's a joy to use. Cheers,
@@eddieleonard6925 it was pretty beat, but nothing some new pots and deox it couldn't fix 👍 also, I got adapters that convert the inserts to direct outs which are post-eq so it's basically 16 vintage British-style preQs. Unfortunately I don't have the I/O to run multitracks through it from the DAW but I'll get there eventually!
@@eddieleonard6925 yes and yes! You have the D8 so you'd be totally fine doing this, but the ground hum make this unusable without breaking the loop with DI boxes
Ayo Bonafide Beatz! good to hear from you. Glad this resonated. And I hope you find a mixer that fits your signal flow soon. There's a lotta creative options. I got lucky because the vintage pieces I have are well-kept and mostly still functioning, but every once in a while a channel goes out, or a fader gets scratchy..that's analog...keep them beats coming..
Nice..that's a great era for consoles and small format boards. You find the newer hybrids limiting? Usually they have lots of connectivity, no? It's the sound of the newer boards that falls flat for me. Might as well use a DAW and maybe some analog summing box instead. Older boards have some funk to them, which lends well to certain types of music. Lately I've been pushing the pre-amps on my Allen and Heath and there's a nice sweet spot before distortion that brings new life to samples. Thanks for checking the video.
been looking for one of this era A&H for years after seeing many 70's photos of the Philip Glass Ensemble recording/mixing with them. Love the silver design, large well spaced knobs, discrete, often transformer balanced, but still compact.
They rarely show up, but you're totally right -- they represent a unique era in compact, but high quality home mixers. I've seen some of those Phillip Glass photos, as well as others who've integrated them as sidecar mixers within bigger studios, often modded. Thanks for checking the video!
Just found your channel, very much liking the vibes. That's a sick mixer, I've been on an A&H kick for a minute and may pick up a 32 channel console sometime soon. Looking forward to going thru more of your vids...
I have a thing for vintage "budget" mixers. They're not Neve's or Api's but they're interesting and functional. Make sure you get a good power supply for that 32 channel. Cheers,
That's a gem. I have several fancy new digital mixers. Recently fixed up an old 8 channel Tascam M208 from the 80's. It has found a spot in my production room. We are talking zero latency monitoring!
My favorite thing about working with hardware mixers...no latency. Frees up the mind, creates a vibe of its own. I had a Tascam m80(?) way back when. Loved the sound, until a few of the channels went out. :(
I don’t know what I enjoyed more, seeing you and your little one producing or the Allen & Heath Review. Congrats on the little one, may your little bundle of joy bring many many blessings and great moments to you and your family. You take old school to a whole new other level and it’s so cool! Keep up the awesome productions. Will be looking forward to your album. Will you also be dropping it in other platforms or only band camp?
Thank you! I've never released music before, so I'm researching my options, but probably only bandcamp and maybe a limited run of cassettes with bonus beats. Cheers,

Man awesome video, i love mixers so much for the reason that not much info can be found in one place online. The mystery is so intriguing! Gonna hunt for one of these now to compliment my wheatstone sp8 24 channel console i use
@eddieleonard6925 ive really enjoyed it so far, i got it for free due to a school updating to a digital console for the theater program(they got the wheatstone from a local tv station) wheatstones are also nice because parts are still readily available for older unit and they are easy to work on
I've inherited a Quasi 8x4 from my Dad but i don't have a power supply for it. Do you have any details on the power supply and the pinout for it? I've tried A&H but they don't have any documents.
Sorry for the delayed response. Its hard to find power supplys for these old units. Their website does have the original brochure and schematics. Honestly, sometimes any power supply for the older A&H units may work. They come up from time to time on ebay/reverb, etc.
Thank u! At first, this mixer was VERY annoying because it's so limiting...but I've grown to love the sound, the layout, the feel. I'd love a few extra inserts but the preamps make up for it. Cheers!
Really love your analog way of making Beats! Ive just started out buying analog gear and making Beats without using daws. But i always master my Beats in a daw. Do u have an analog way of doing it? Keep up what you do!
I'm trying to learn how to use a daw for mastering and/or mixing, but I'm not very good at it so far. Right now, I record from mixer straight into converters and then a dsd recoder. I would like to use a computer in the future. what program do you use?
