  • DAW is great - we all know that. It's the ultimate in quality and flexibility, but what if we want to add the tactile nature of a mixing desk, together with using old classic outboard gear?
    Well, in this video, I aim to answer questions that have been asked on my video "Recording, Mixing and Mastering: a complete process", which you can see here:
    • A Complete Recording P...
    Most of the questions asked were how I hooked up everything, so here it is!
    There's a diagram at the end, explaining how the equipment is connected.

    A lot to like about this video. The computer was asleep, the cosy studio, nice shelves with stuff on them, old kit and the presenter with a slight Harry Hillness. I'm a fan now. Thanks

    Lovely to see the blending of the old with the new, thank you. Used the old analogue gear (Teac Tascam Fostex Seck Soundcraft Synths and all the outboard rack units) throughout the 70s and 80s until the responsibilities of life took over. Still have most of it mothballed. Then in recent years I was dragged into the 21st century with an iPad. I found to my amazement the likes of GarageBand and the more sophisticated Cubasis,.......all my room of old gear jammed into an iPad!
    Having lived through the analogue days, the ease of use of the modern DAWs is astonishing, but I don’t half miss all those knobs and faders!
    Do I detect a resurrection of the analogue equipment? It seems to be happening in the synthesiser world with the revival of the hardware synth classics.
    Thank you for your videos, the content is still remarkably close to my heart.

    Nice video. I totally get what you're doing. I have a Ghost 32 and a Behringer X32. I use Reaper with no Master Bus, as everything is monitored in the console. It's the best of both worlds because I operate the X32 in inline mode and monitor off Reaper's Record Monitor back through the console (I've eliminated latency with Dante). Works fantastic and with X32ReaperAutoMate for automation, I'm mixing records like I did in the 80s but with pristine audio (no tape hiss!) and full automation of over 10,000 parameters on the X32. I wish I had this setup back in 1985!

I even ask for tech support at Sweetwater and they told me that this couldn’t be done with an analog mixer. I have a mackie usb mixer and I’m trying to get mines set up like this multi channel. • @DanBakerMusic
      @DanBakerMusic  4 года назад +1

      Hi there - I have the Focusrite Saffire Pro 56, which has eight line ins and ten line outs (as well as its own mic pre-amps), and I wire these into the first ten line inputs of the desk, and then the red fader busses go into the inputs of the interface. On Logic, each channel can be sent to any pair of outputs that shows up on the interface. For individual channels, one would have to pan the channels hard left and right, for example, Kick and snare could both output on channels 1-2, But kick hard left to channel 1, and snare hard right to channel 2

Thanks again for all you do to help us music nuts out.

    • @DanBakerMusic
      @DanBakerMusic  4 года назад +4

      Cheers Michael - The desk bus outputs (red faders) are connected to the line inputs of the DAW, and then I take all ten outputs of the interface back to channels 1 - 10 of the desk in case I would like to mix through analogue channels. The main output of the desk goes to my two-track rack, comprising a compressor/limiter, a CD recorder (I hardly use this) and a Revox reel to reel machine. I also have hooked up a cassette deck, Minidisc and an old graphic equaliser, for tidying up old recordings. All this goes through a little mixer of its own, and back into the desk for transfer to DAW.. I’ve got away without using a patch bay...

    There is just one thing I don't understand yet. If you control all the effects on your mixing desk, how does your DAW safe these? When you use a plugin, that plugin is being saved on that channel you use the certain plugin on. Does this work the same with a mixing desk?

    Great video! So, let's say I've got a drum track in my DAW, which I am putting out via an output channel on my audio interface, to track 1 on my mixer. And, as you did in the video (near the end), let's say I manipulate the EQ and levels a bit on the mixer, and then use the AUX to bring in a bit of "crunch" - It's sounding great! But, what do I do with that track now? How do I go about storing those physical changes?
    Is it simply a case of routing the drum track 1 over to one of the the group buses, and then record that bus into a new track in my DAW, and then replace the original track with the new one?
    Or, is there a way to record the new changes to drum track 1 without recording to a second intermediary track?

    • @DanBakerMusic
      @DanBakerMusic  3 года назад +1

      You could play back onto another track on computer to go with the original one, but also use the old one as a reference for phase: any D to A and then back A to D incurs slight delays in signals.

    Tbh I’m stuck in choosing the appropriate mixer. I’m in between a Korg MW mixer or the new Tascam Models.
    I own a TR8, TB3, Korg KP3, Microkorg, CDJ, MPC, Guitar, Piano, Bass Guitar, a Boss Over-Drive Pedal, and a Boss Sp Sampler as of right now. So for a total of (11)hardware pieces/equipment what mixers are generally suggested? (including channel wise) I’m new to music and producing and would like to learn how to a build a workflow with mixer integration. Thank you!

    • @DanBakerMusic
      @DanBakerMusic  4 года назад +1

      The most important thing here is to have a mixer with as many input channels as you need, plus a few more to future-proof your setup. Quality-wise, they’re all very similar, so don’t worry too much about different makes. What you want to avoid is patch-bays, as these introduce noise, loose-connections, etc.. to your audio chain. Cabling is also vital to success - you need to make sure you don’t have to constantly plug and unplug stuff...

      I have a multi-input audio interface, whose inputs are connected to the outputs of my mixing desk, using jack to jack cables. With respect to exporting at a lower volume, yes - you can just reduce the level and re-export, instead of having to re-record. However, if the level was too high, and there is distortion, then yes - re-recording is the only option.

      Hi There - the 1180 I think won’t allow 16 tracks, but yes you can connect a live mixer to the inputs of the 1180, and i think there are ten inputs. You’ll have to check how many tracks you can record at once though.

    I just seen this video and thought I would see if you had any input of another video I had seen they said that you can’t run analog into a DAW without a timing setup between the interface and your computer is this right our wrong looking at your setup you don’t have anything like that. Looking at the prices of a timing set up was just around 2500$ us and up if it’s something I don’t have to have I would like to know I’m a noob when it comes to this but trying to figure it out any feed back would help thanks

    • @DanBakerMusic
      @DanBakerMusic  4 года назад

      Hi Chris - I have a feeling that this is about monitoring inputs and outputs at the same time, which would potentially happen with a mixing desk. This is only really an issue if using a lot of processing on the computer, where the output would be delayed by all the processing going on. As for the timing setup between the interface and computer, that sounds to me more the fact that if you have more than one interface (extra channels), then you need a word clock cable between the two things. That’s $2.50 though! Send me the link and I’ll have a look...

    If with the help of a mixing desk and outboard equipment, I am able to generate the sound I need....what do I need a DAW for? I never understood how big recording studios have their set up. Do they use only mix consoles together with effects boxes or also use plugins for the effects with the DAW?

    • @DanBakerMusic

      It’s a bit of both with the big studios - they tend to have multi-channel audio interfaces, where signals can be routed through dedicated studio effects units and analogue signal paths. Some studios still use dedicated recorders such as the Otari digital mulittracks or other hard disk based stuff.
