I am going in tomorrow morning to my local collage and asking for my money back for the tuition I paid for their audio course. This is ABSOLUTELY the best how to video I have watched, out of thousands, concerning mic'ing, mixing and mastering audio! Very well done.
You must have went to a shitty college for audio production. Cuz my local college which was phoenix community college. They taught me all that he went over on both multi track and daw. But he did explain it all very well.
Dan, This is brilliant…. The old school way of doing it. Everyone that is getting into recording or ‘music production’ as they now call it should watch this….
*"It helps to look at the old way, to understand how the new way works".....* And, the heavens parted as the truth shined down upon us. I've already posted my thoughts on this gentleman, but I couldn't help myself, I had to give my kudos again. Dan truly get's it. It's interesting that these boards are now coming back (although, I'm not sure they ever "left").
I’ve been asking for a demonstration of this for YEARS, almost to the quote. It’s so easy to get bogged down in one aspect of any one of these processes, that you miss the big picture. I just said, record 4 bars, the take us through every aspect of the recording process right up to the point of posting it on the internet (obviously without actually posting it on the internet). *A bird’s eye view of each one of these processes on a small amount of music, would be such a huge learning experience*. The other thing that wold be great is to see just how good you can make these affordable interfaces sound, using high-end plugin’s that represent those amazing analogue consoles (Neve, SSL, API, etc..). No one’s done that yet, either. Is the technology advanced enough now to where we can truly get a radio ready production with “bedroom”, or “home studio” gear???? This is spectacular. The Brits and Japan still know what it means to actually “teach” something. You can add that to the list of broken things in America today. You’re helping a LOT of people with this Dan. Well done.
Agree on this. I've tried looking for a video showing how a song gets professionally recorded and mixed because I really want to know the micing for different instruments or if they use a VST or if they plug it directly in if its a guitar, but a video showing everything step by step in a studio with pro's just does not seem to exist, apart from this one.
@@povilasl5383 Amen... You can find a video on a micro level of just about every aspect of the recording process. But, unless you already know how the entire process works from A-Z, then it's next to impossible to have a point of reference for what they're teaching. For instances, when someone says "mixing"....what they DON'T tell you is that there are a TON of things going on with that process, aside from simply adjusting faders. And, I have yet to hear anyone mention that. That, and the people who truly know, are VERY protective of their processes. It's a frustration learning process. As what the great Beau Hill said.... You almost need someone to take you under their wing to truly learn this stuff (which is how he learned). Anyway, know that you're obviously not the only one going through that same frustration. For what it's worth, Presonus does a really nice job of taking you through the process (relatively speaking).
@@phillamoore157 Ill be sure to check out presonus' videos then! Yeah, but I mean the fact that recording/mixing engineers are protective of their processes is understandable because they might lose their job if someone can just do it the just same or better than them. Thats already possible by learning every step on a micro level, but thats a bit inconvenient and a full on video/film would be great educational content for students and the general public that doesn't understand how their favourite music is made.
This seems to be the most complete music production video so far. Maybe just the basics, but that's all anyone really needs to make good quality records. Great video!
I'm a amateur music producer for my own personal enjoyment of making music. And I've just learned so much from this one video than I've learned in years from various other RUclips videos. I actually feel like I'll know what I'll be doing from now on. What a great video and such an easy to understand explanation for everything. I can't thank you enough.
those drums are so crisp! I doubt there is a more comprehensive, insightful single video regarding the recording process on the entire internet. this one is all in one place, segmented for easy navigation, done with a good song so that people can connect to it, explained very well, and doesn't leave anything for assumptions. very well done, thanks for this. I know all of this, but I'm sure it's indispensable for others.
I knew nothing about recording or mixing before I watched this. I'm also a non-native English speaker. Nonetheless, it looks completely clear and you made that easy. Thank you Dan!
100% the best and most informative video on the recording process I’ve ever seen. I’ve been producing music out of my bedroom studio for quite a few years now and this video made me really go back to the basics and that improved my mixes more than anything. Thanks so much!
I found this video today. I am absolutley amateur but i can say this is the best video tutorial i ever seen. Not only for the music recording but the way you explain. It is amazing. I am shure that you will expire so many people with this video. it is absolutley great great video. Thank you
Thank you so so much. Ive literally watched 5 hours of mixing videos and not a single one could really answer all my questions or explain it clearly. This has been an actualy godsend!
Jeez man, today is the first day that basics of mixing has ever made true sense to me. Like that the actual uses vs turning knobs in a daw that made it sound good to me. Great tutorial!
WOW, THIS is without a doubt the greatest LESSON I have ever had in my life with this. THANKS SO SO MUCH. Your so awesome. Please keep doing all that you do...
This is probably the best intro to recording/mixing I've seen. You manage to clearly hit most of the points being doled out in tips or implied in many other tutorials all in one video. It's also good for us old-timers who may have recorded in the multi-track tape days and are getting back into it using a computer. I'd recommend this to anyone starting to learn to record and mix their music - thanks!
greatest video ever, ive been at for a while now watching 100s of tutorials but yours is amazing and youve shown me more that i can imagine ..thanks bro ..

You know what you're talking about Mr DB (pardon the pun). More importantly, the interplay between delivery, active examples, info load and down home honesty simply works. For me and many others watching this it seems. A non-compressed thank you!
Extremely informative! My comment is a conglomerate of all of the other comments on here -- GREAT Video! In fact, the ONLY one I watched in it's entirety and walk away with knowledge and ambition to apply what I learned.

The "old way" is just so much more intuitive and actually sounds better than when you went to computer. And it's that console that does it. The drums and vocals especially sounded much better through the board. A real board is just better than a digital mixer.
Really like how you showed the old way. I'm working with a multitrack tape recorder right now and there's surprisingly little out there on youtube about old school mixing on a console, send and return, and things like that. Thank you!

My 2 cents to ad that I’ve found to be useful is if possible when recording using both midi and audio signals is before recording pitched audio such as bass and guitars test your vocal with the midi instruments so you can change pitch as most of the time when people write and home record they hold back on vocals when writing or rehearsing and when it comes to laying down the vocal in the track you are not pushing your voice enough and the vocal ends up weak and murky. If not using any midi pitched instruments you can change pitch after recording then sit with an acoustic and do a guide track. Much less importance is played now to a guide track since so many edits and tracks are now available but a guide acoustic and vocal track sang along full passion and performance with a click lets you know your key is correct and your tempo is good for the syllabic content of the music and phrasing. Hope this helps

I dont think i have watched a whole video like this.. I remember playing with the actual "old way" when I was ypunger. This was very good and your mix is stuck in my head xD great tips TYSM!
Kenneth Simbapuppyeyes Thanks Kenneth! I enjoyed doing the old way too - makes a refreshing change not to look at pretty pictures on the computer screen...
I really enjoyed the "old method". Thanks!
This is an excellent demo, and hats off to Dan.
Nice to see the behind the scenes of the way others work. Great job.
Great breakdown of your process. I showed this to my 12year old daughter so she could get an idea of how the music she listens to is made. (I used to work in studios back in the 90's - recording everything to a giant BASF multi-track tape.)
