Any car with over 800 hp could be a super car not all the cars can handle that much hp..MY C6 has over 500 hp and is not a super car but close.
All Corvettes are Super Cars if it makes you Happy.
Currently have a SS/Z28 Camaro and looking for a reasonably priced C-5 Z06.
A Super Car to me is a car you see when your 12 years old and say I’m going to have one of those someday. For me that was the Corvette. I was 12 years old in 1975 and the C3 corvette was so beautiful. I kept that promise to myself I currently have a 79 C3 the same year I got my drivers license. I also have a 90 C4 and a 2010 C6 Grand Sport convertible. Every corvette to me is Super and people always want to talk about them. Another great video and great conversation starter Lyle.
Great point there. My neighbor has the same attitude as you about his c3 Corvette. 30 years later he still loves driving his Corvette. 😮😊
Glad to see another person who is not really a collector but wants a choice of what to drive next weekend. I have 2 C5’s, a Conv and a fixed roof. You know it’s a disease, right?

Why does the media have this conflict about a Corvette. I'd it puts out super car numbers then it's a super car. If the car had a Forgien badge and a built overseas you the media would drool and Bragg about it. A vette puts out impressive numbers and can be driven daily..
There is no question that the "supercar" title is rarely given to American cars...Europeans tend to turn their noses up at anything made here unless it is old and classic. Watch Top Gear from the early '00's to see that in motion. We look at European cars as more exotic because they are more expensive, but more and more of our domestic cars are as good or better. Lyle

In the 2009 MY, I would agree. Other cars eclipsed it a bit later in its run, but when it was introduced it was definitely a supercar! Lyle
I agree about the C6 ZR1. 638hp is more HPs than most people are competent enough to handle. I am a proud owner of a 2013 60th Anniversary Grand Sport Coupe.
Classic z06 and dodge demon definitely a super cars and I don't care what anyone on the face of the planet tells me but a twin turbo civic type r is a super car. I smoke lambos and Ferraris and vettes in my type r on the strip and formula B racing tracks in my sleep by miles. Also the Toyota supra mk4 is a super car and so is the rx7. Like someone said if it puts out super car numbers and looks awsome it's a super car
Sorry I veered off topic I think the Z06 is for sure a super car I've seen those damn things break 200 on the express way. Granted my buddies cuped them up a bit but they were going 200-205
Our '22 Chevy Tahoe is a supercar!
That thing takes our boys to school, medical appointments, etc.
It takes my wife and I (only!) out on special occasions...especially those 'really rare' 😂 times when the extra room in the back comes in handy 😜.
We can load it to the gills (definitely no pun intended!), boys included 😮, on our long travels.
But, when I hop in my C6 Z06, well, that Tahoe just can't keep up!

My 2024 Chevrolet Trax is a super car. Because it allows me to have my 21 Camaro 2SS and my 23 Corvette Z51 home in garage.
GT40 will be the supercar in my mind forever.

I've always considered Corvette as America's Ferarri. Colors are very similar as well. Yes a Ferarri is not very attainable here, but so is the corvette over seas.
Happy to know that my 1993 ZR-1 40th Anniversary is considered a super car
I love my C8 Z06. My favorite feature is the Cavalier turning indicator stalk. I think things like that are why Corvettes get a bad wrap. I agree with your list Lyle.

I think all ZR-1s besides the C3 are supercars, and the C8 Z06 is one too. I'm fine with my base C4 being called a sports car because--it's still one hell of a sports car! I mean, 29-0 SCCA showroom stock come on!
Lyle great to meet you at the show last week, if you've never meet Lyle super nice guy stands at least 6'-7" no idea how he fits in the early C1 and C2 models. Supercar, I'm thinking early Pantera with the Cleveland 351. I worked in a body shop in the late 70's and a guy brought one in, I thought it was super cool and quick.
What you describe as a Super Car is also now being classified as a Hyper Car, and the Super Car designation is being applied to C8 and other Corvettes as well as what you described as Super Sports Cars. The Hyper Car designation could continue to be more widely accepted for the elite cars you mentioned. Thanks for your thoughts on these outstanding vehicles.

LYLE- What about C5 Z06 for early 2000's especially 2001-2004 ??
It was a great super sports car...and still is a great sports car for the money. It didn't have the limited availability or prestige of a supercar---even it's price was very reasonable--but it remains one of the finest all-around sports cars ever made. Lyle :)

I agree with a lot of what you said. However, the Camaro and Mustang are not sports cars, IMHO. They are muscle cars, as are big block Vettes back in the day.

I would put the current day Mustang and Camaro in the sports car bucket. The just discontinued Challenger goes in the muscle car bucket. Very different driving experiences, size, weight, handling, etc.
Anything with a back seat is not a sports car really. And a Camaro, Mustang, Challenger, Barracuda, Javelin, or AMX are not a muscle car unless they are equipped with a higher performance engine option. They are pony cars. When I think of a TRUE sports car, it would be a small, good handling car with moderate power. Cars like the old MG's, Triumph's, Alfa Romeo's were real sports cars. New sports cars to me are Mazda MX5's, Nissan Z's, Honda S2000's, and the Subaru/Toyota BRZ and GR86.
@@kirkthejerkthe1stI hear you Kirk, but to me if a four door can hold its on a track than its a sports car. These days I think the engine is a gray line-an Ecoboot Mustang puts out 300 plus horsepower, more than a 1990s C4 Corvette.
Love the content. As far as car classes though , is there a muscle car segment anymore , or are cars today more in the sports car segment.
Another thing that makes s supercar is handles well on a track. Lots of cars can go fast in a straight line
Absolutely! My son is a racecar driver, and he loves the Porsche 911 GT3...in his mind it is a supercar. I don't think it is because it lacks the exotic lines of a supercar, but I grant that it is the very best car for street and track work without being modified. Lyle
I like the term "Supercar Killer" for the C8 Z06. It's price is certainly not exclusive - although terribly expensive - and it isn't going to be built in such limited quantities that it won't depreciate.
I think in 1996 Ford sold the fort Marston SVT Cobra, but the only way to buy that car you needed a racing license.
Ehh I wouldnt use rarity, cost or exclusivity as a criteria, those all can be manipulated by anyone.
Super car should soley be based on performance, technology, and unique design. All 3 of those requires very smart and talented people.
I would argue that the c4 zr1, c6 z06, c6 zr1, c7 zr1 and now c8 z06, were all super cars for the time period of release.

I agree with your assessment. The sticking point for most people is the design, because beauty is ultimately subjective. The Zenvo from Denmark is unique, but not beautiful in my opinion, for example. I just love the discussion!! :) Lyle
I think if the C4 ZR1 is a super car then the even more exclusive B2K Callaway ( last weeks trivia question) should also be included.
I generally agree with your criteria. I think you should have mentioned the 63 Grand Sports, as well.
Those were straight-up racecars, never meant for the street. Awesome as they were, they really don't fit in this category because of that. Lyle :)

Its interesting that you only touch on RPO super cars. The Calloway C4 corvettes should certainly be considered super cars because they tick all the boxes as far as price, exclusivity, power and speed . The 1988 cost about $26,000 added to the base price of the corvette you provided Callaway for the twin turbo addition along with distinctive bodywork. They would easily hit the double century mark.
Im actually a ford guy, but that super car ended with the Pantera, for road going cars. So Corvette wins.
A Corvette stingray I would consider a supercar
A super car is someting you dream about when when you don't have money. A super duper car is a Corvette you can afford and call it your own. Love my impeccable C2 convertible for 30years.
My 06 Z06 supercharged (621 whp) too be super car or just real dam fun to drive
I think the C4 sledgehammer qualifies too.
It certainly had the performance and exclusivity to qualify, but in my mind a supercar is born a supercar, not a sportscar modified to become one. Just my opinion, and I welcome disagreement! Lyle :)

The 1969 or 1968 ZL1 was a super car of the C3 generation. The L-88 was certainly a contender.

Exclusivity isnt a factor in the least. Its ascension of designation is based on the sports factor. The ENTIRE Y chassis C8 Corvette lineup encompasses the SUPERCAR MANTRA strictly on performance alone. Dont forget a Z51 Stingray is a much faster track capable car that the entire 458 series. The Z51 is the PORSCHE CARRERA S equivalent, and that Porsche is 150,000 bucks. The Z06 is Porsches GT3 equivalent with its variants. The upcoming ZR1 will be the 992 GT2 competition. These are all SUPERCARS in every sense of the word. ALREADY we have track prepped C8s on cup 2s absolutely destroying lap times, and the Z06 was tested throwing down faster lap times than ANY McLaren 720 S worldwide.
I think Super Car it's the car that most of the people just simple can't afford and only can dream about ))
Love your vids Lyle! I'm going to be a bit irreverent with my definition of a "super car". It is a car that if it breaks down it takes 6 months to get the parts, and another 6 months for someone to show up that knows what to do with the parts. That is a paraphrase from I think R&T or Car & Driver from the late '60's or early '70's. Unless you have a very larger disposable income, a corvette is the best bet for the 'every person supercar'. JMHO. My 72 LT-1 would turn my buds 71 911 inside out and I had heat and A/C! What about the '67 427 with I believe the "C47" package. R&T tested one of those at Daytona's road course and off the trailer broke the lap time for A/sports production(?). A well tuned sb/FI C2 could run away and hide from any XKE, and 911 of the time. So what is a super car?

It’s nice to have these cars in categories but shouldn’t there be some sort of objective measure to determine what category they’re in? For example: top speed and skid pad measures. And then you get into HyperCars. I have a c3 and a c7 and never thought about where they rank. Maybe the c3 because it has over 120k miles and still doesn’t burn oil. lol.

To me, supercars are about the performance. When a car performs so much better than "average" that there are only 2 or 3 models that perform similarly, rarity is inherent. So, C4 ZR1, C6 ZR1, C7 Z06 and ZR1, C8 Z06 and the new ZR1 when it lands.
If for the C8 the base Vettes didn't exist, maybe the C8 Z06 would be a supercar, but with something "so close" for less than half the price, it cannot be a supercar.
This was another aspect of the debate i had with my son. Is the Shelby GT500 a supercar? it has the power and the prestige / limited availability, right? but it is based on a car that is offered with a 2.0 turbo 4 cylinder in its base trim. That eliminates it from Supercar contention in my eyes. BUT, the 911 GT3 RS and GT2 RS are undeniably Supercars based on the "mundane" 911 Carrera. This is that weird gray area we find ourselves in with this topic. The C8 Z06 is enough of a performer with all the right bits on it to qualify for the title in my opinion. Lyle :)

Here in Germany Things are complete different.
If you drive on the Street, you see at least two Porsche 911 every Day.
Nobody look after a 911 in Germany.
But when you drive a DeLorean, People treat you like it would be a Lambourghini Diabolo. Its funny, because in the USA a DeLorean is a crappy trash Car, while in Germany everyone turn around when you see one of them.
Same Deal with a Corvette. Most People recognize it from 100 meters away.
What about the C6 ZR1 you didn't mention it.

I'm much too literal to join this conversation. Having learned to drive in a succession of old English sports cars, I feel anything not designed for lightness and an eye towards the spartan simplicity of true sporting equipment is disqualified from the sports car label.

The last climate event killed eight people in my home state , so I'm not that enthusiastic about riding the more of the same train.
Mustangs camaros challengers are examples of gt(grand tourer) cars oviously theres levels depending each individual budget and taste bentley continental mercedes benz gt the aston martin db series these are all german examples, whats the definition of a gt car, simply put its a car that its designed for a good amount of power and handling and its the same type of sports car that has been designed with comfortable long trips in mind as well, on the other hand a super car is more track focused such as the corvette in general which doesn’t necessarily have to be a z06 or zr1(those are different levels super cars) more over the other category should be exotic super cars which are also track focused with a much higher price tag then corvette due to the high craftsmanship and quality of all materials used such as lambos, ferraris, porsche etc

Yes, I think Ferrari's like that too. That you cannot just buy any Ferrari. You have to first start with the basic Ferrari like the California and then build up. From there

"Supercar" used to be the top tier of sports and performance cars but now that category is called "Hypercar". The proving grounds for these top tier cars is typically the Nurburgring or a dragstrip or airstrip. Supercars need to achieve top 3% on one or all of the proving grounds while Hypercars have to be in the top 1% combined with some unconventional forms of technology and materials that make them far more expensive and rare as a result. I thought you gave some great examples of Corvettes that qualify as Supercars. You could probably add the C6 Zr1 to that list as well.

I consider my 2011 Lamborghini Gallardo as a minimum super car, and my corvette, and corvettes in general are great sports cars. I love them both for different reasons. I might agree on the C7 ZR-1 as a super car. I am, and will always be a corvette girl.
Sorry, Lyle, but I do not think that Mustangs and Camaros are sports cars rather than simply performance cars. They were sold as 1/4-mile terrors, not road course warriors. I would call the upper echelon versions of these cars track cars (road and track, not sports).
Let me end the argument really really quickly a 2006 Lamborghini Gallardo is 500hp 196mph super car and is slower around the track (top gear 1:22.4 for Z06 1:25.8 for the Gallardo, and Murciélagois at 1:23.7 all dry) has the same hp number and a a slower top speed than the 2006 Chevorlet Corvette Z06 officially at 198
It’s only when you go to the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera do you beat the c6 zo6 with a 1:20.8 and then my response is ZR1 1:20.4 on a damp track so if you have a Lamborghini or Ferrari and you want to keep taking copeium be my Guest because Corvette been right up your *** for years now
If you’re talking about exclusivity and companies making people buy extra cars to get what they actually want basically extorting money from people and doing shady business practices that should get you kicked out of the supercar argument and if your car is so exclusive, got it breaks it literally anything what super about it when a stock Honda Civic is faster than a broken supercar Corvette has Chevy and they may not be perfect, but they do have enough logistics to keep things going
Base corvette is a sports car
Grand sport is a sport / touring car
Z06 is a sports / track car
ZR1 and Callaway are super cars
And none of them are muscle cars please stop saying that
I have a 2014 Corvette Z51 with a supercharger , M7 Velocity Yellow with black stripes, Kooks headers and catless x pipe and Billy boat fusion axel back. Not a Super car. I would think a Supercar would be hand built. I don't think Corvette's are supercars. There's too many of them. You could literally buy any of them right now. The only one that could be, is the C7 ZR1.

Super cars must reach 200 mph or more & must be a factory built car. That's what I thought Super cars where ?
That is a solid litmus test! I like that. So, using that criteria, the C6 ZR1 and C7 ZR1 both qualify. the C8 Z06 misses the 200 mark by 5mph. So does the 911 GT3 RS. So does the Nissan GTR. interesting!! Lyle :)

Good overall definition of a "Super Car," but do not agree that any Corvette was, or is, a Super Car. Regardless of the model Vette, it is a "Chevy" that can be purchased at just about any Chevy dealer. Now, if in fact there is a 'Zora' that has very limited numbers, less than a hundred, then it may be a Super Car, but we will have to wait to see the performance details and the design. As far as the C8 Z06, from a distance, can you tell it apart from the regular Stingray (other than that huge wing)? Great vid, keep it up.
C8 Z06 has center quad exhaust.... C8 has exhaust outlets on each side...
