This came out in '86, at the rise/height of televangelists on American television...and the corresponding scandals/fraudulent practices that came out about them. This song was prescient and well timed then and still fits today for many evangelical/Christian cult leaders here and world-wide.

Instant like for a heavily underrated song! I love how they are exposing/mocking all those hypocrites (tv evangelists) for taking peoples money because "god said so":
send me money, send me green
    heaven you will meet
make a contribution and you`ll get a better seat
    bow to leper messiah!

You hit the nail on the head understanding the meaning behind this song. And yes Master of Puppets is their best album due to its power, aggression and rawness. And Justice For All would've been on same level if Cliff was still alive or the band actually gave Jason the opportunity to contribute to album. 🤘😎🤘

    • @vierdo
      @vierdo 8 месяцев назад +1

Just a notice for you @r.deanmcknight136.
AND JUSTICE FOR ALL would never been recorded if Cliff was alive. That album is all about his death, the trial they had go through and to live is to die is a dedication for Cliff. ONE ..Harvester of Sorrow, Blackened is about other stuff.

    • @r.deanmcknight136
      @r.deanmcknight136 8 месяцев назад

Actually all this was in the works before Cliffs death. The song writing was a different approach compared to earlier stuff. So this album would've still been as it was but not with Cliffs talents due to his death.

    • @vierdo
      @vierdo 8 месяцев назад

@@r.deanmcknight136 The only thing written by Cliff Burton on that album was a part of to live is to die.

The title comes from a line in "Ziggy Stardust" by David Bowie. Also, one of the riffs after the solo in "Master of Puppets" was lifted from the song "Andy Warhol" by David Bowie off the "Hunky Dory" album. Kirk and Cliff included it as a tribute to Bowie.

    Great tune!
Hetfield's attitude towards religion always fascinates me. His parents were Christian Scientists. James lost his mom at age 16 due to cancer. A cancer that could've been treated, but their religion would not allow it. Imagine how angry that must've made him as a teen and how that would have affected his songwriting. Heavy emotional stuff.

One, two, one, two, three, four
    Spineless from the start
    Sucked into the part
    Circus comes to town
    You play the lead clown
    Please, please, spreading his disease
    Living by his story
Knees, knees, falling to your knees
    Suffer for his glory
    You will
Time for lust, time for lie
Time to kiss your life goodbye
Send me money, send me green, heaven you will meet
Make a contribution and you'll get a better seat
    Bow to Leper Messiah
    Marvel at his tricks
    Need your Sunday fix
    Blind devotion came
    Rotting your brain
Chain, chain, join the endless chain
    Taken by his glamour
Fame, fame, infection is the game
    Stinking drunk with power
We see, we see, we see
Time for lust, time for lie
Time to kiss your life goodbye
Send me money, send me green, heaven you will meet
Make a contribution and you'll get the better seat
    Bow to Leper Messiah
    Witchery, weakening
    Sees the sheep are gathering
    Set the trap, hypnotize
    Now you follow
Time for lust, time for lie
Time to kiss your life goodbye
Send me money, send me green, Heaven, you will meet
Make a contribution and you'll get the better seat
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie

TV evangelists were a popular subject for metal bands to go after back in the 80s/early 90s. Off the top of my head there's also Send Me Your Money by Suicidal Tendencies, Make Me Laugh by Anthrax, and Holy Smoke by Iron Maiden, although I think Metallica got there first with Leper Messiah.

Morning guys ✨️ This song is so heavy. It's exactly 💯 what you interpreted Smokey. This is another song from James views on his family's religion and how he felt about it. Try the God that failed off the Black album, it's about his Mom and their religious beliefs.
Thanks for playing this song.♥️ MOP was such a huge drop, I was a huge fan at 17yrs old 1982..I was a senior in high school with KA 1st release and had seen them the first time in LA in 81' then when RTL dropped Wow! It's crazy to think they were 22 yrs old when MOP was written, that's insane. I was 21 when MOP dropped it was 🔥 Fire!! I've been fortunate to have seen them from 81' through 94' at their peek they were unstoppable!! This album was inducted into congress!! These guys are still killing it I've seen them throughout including this past August 25-27 at SOFI Stadium, incredible ...like they don't age in their craft & they're like kids on stage having a ball!! They are so tight on harmonies, riffs, leads, and definitely James vocals are Amazing!! After 43yrs of playing they are still enjoying the ride!! Check out some live versions from the past few weeks and months, they are so much better Live, period! Their music got me through some extremely bad times in my life. I took my 29 yr old daughter this past August 25-27 for the 72-season 2 night no repeat concerts, since in 94' I saw them 5 months pregnant with her!! She couldn't believe how good they're live!! They even played Fight Fire, one of their fastest songs...they just killed it!! I'm still in awe!! So that was my 17th and 18th time seeing them!! Just freakin Amazing!! Much love from Cali!! ❤️‍🔥🤘🤘🎸

You guys are spot on. The theme for master of puppets is control.
Puppets being the people, and the master being the thing or person who controls you, and that’s represented in this album via addiction/government/military/religion and so forth. It’s a great album concept and to tie so many different versions of control into the one concept is just awesome.
Reading along to the lyrics of this song makes it hit different, as it does with most Metallica songs to be honest.

I believe this song was also written about his mother, because she was in pretty much like a religious cult almost like the scientology, and she died of cancer and nobody in that church would help infact I think it was a church against modern science and her belief pretty much killed her if I remember it right.

Point of interest on the lyric "glamour". Glamour was originally one of 2 types of magic. Glimmerry referred to using magic to exagerate an aspect of something. A car is transport and dangerous (2 aspects) glimmer could exaggerate the dangerous side. Glamourry meant to disguise or hide something's true nature; whereas now it tend to mean to cover your true appearance in ornate and expensive things

MOP is the best Metallica album IMO as an old school metal lover. I’ve always been more of a megadeth fan but this album is sick.
