To this day, this is still one of the most epic cutscenes I've ever seen.
you got that right. thought I was the only one with this in mind.
Childhood games... :D
+Alex Macmillan I know what you mean mate. good memories ay.
That!...that is how you introduce a character!.
i remember watching this shit as a kid and was just like "wow. and nintendo barely allows blood on their systems"
Remaster these fucking games please.
Very good idea !
"From the writer of the Uncharted series..."
There, I saved them $30 million in marketing, and that's 2 million copies sold, guaranteed.
randomamerican1
Dude it would be epic to play these games on ps4 with updated graphics and having the option to go back to old graphics you know.
JK Livewire have you went back and played this recently? This game is really fucking rough and has not aged well, (it was great for its time to don't get me wrong) I loved it and played it nonstop as a kid, but I've tried to go back to play it twice and I can't even play for more than like 5 hours.
AMEN
The voice actor chosen for Raziel was perfect.
Every voice was casted perfectly
He is worthy
Yes He Dam Sure Does💯💯💯🤌🏾
Chuckys dad from rugrats too
Michael Bell. He's also Chucky's dad from Rugrats and Raziel's brother, Melchiah.
This has to be the game storytelling closest to Shakespearian theatre. Every single phrase is with a meaning that can be traced into the actions that will play out thorought the game, every word has a vibrant emotion, the soundtrack is so on point it works as a second narrator, even with the poor graphics of those days, their faces are as expressive as it can get. This is truly a work of art, something that we might not encounter again in videogames during our lifetime.
Yes 🌟
I didnt have the chance when i was a kid to play this Game series. But now as an adul i'm hlad to try it now , just from a few cutscenes i'm flabbergasted by the script and diálogos, i think that god of war can be close to this series and storytelling
@@ffa4181 nome gusta el doblaje.. lo prefiero en ingles
And it's made better when you see the layers the sequels add to things, showing Kain's motivations, how he hopes to defy the path set out for him and Raziel, and to change the course of BOTH their lives, even as we first simply assume he was being petty to Raziel.
I think Amy Hennig wrote this, (Uncharted series)
"For my transgression, I earned a new kind of reward...agony!"
- Raziel
Truly brilliant piece of writing and the way it is delivered. Wow, will we ever see a script as epic and poetic as this ever again???
We seem to be close to a xenogears remake. If Tetsuya Takahashi gets to remake it. Then yes we may see brilliant writing soon hahaha!
I want a Soul reaver remake so bad
Por aquella desobediencia, recibí un nuevo tipo de recompensa. La agonía
No. I no have hope. The atual games are freeze.
Reminds me of a fallen Angels side of the story.
* Laughs in fortnite dance *
The moment Raziel swung his banner around himself to cover his missing jaw, I knew he would be awesome.
*Cast him in!*
Kain i'll have my vengeance!
thanks kain i am you right hand now you sword
Dumah - "years in limbo have honed my skills, not even kain is my equal"
I will take my revenge kain
DAMN YOU KAIN!!!!!!!!
Still haven’t found a game with a better story than this
And its so grammatically beautiful too.
@@RubinCostatic top to bottom!
Me too. Best story and characters in a game ever with so much character development
The only video game story that came close was Metal Gear Solid lol
@@TheRatzor I'd have said something like silent hill 2 but metal gear is good but nowhere near up there in my opinion. It's hyper realism but then really silly at the same time. Love me some metal gear 1-3 the rest can fk off xD
Most underrated game ever, Would have made an incredible movie too.
In theory yes...but knowing the movie industry now...i hope to god no.., it would only butcher the game's lore just like they did in the Warcraft movie
Hollywood would fuck up this masterpiece
To even give the lore justice it would need a trilogy.
Unless Koreans are the producers no movie ok
Look at what they did to Resident evil. Perfect lore. Portray by people that never even tried the game
“The decent had destroyed me, yet-I lived” that moment he rises, the strength in those words. Perfect
The uplifting part of the track, combined with his resurrection, gives a very a messianic tone. So when the Elder God is telling him that the Vampires are corrupting the world and you are meant to destroy them, you take him at face value that you are engaging in a holy task, even though we find out later it was all manipulation.
"I am destroyed!" "You are reborn!"
Raziel's scream at 2:51 when they throw him in is still one of the most epic things caught with a mic. Horror goosebumps. Damn this game is good..
I agree.
For real, one of the most epic screams ever, up there with Arnolds scream at the end of Predator!
I also get chills there for some reason.
chills down my spine everytime I hear it...
@@ZeRafut same!!!
The fucking writing for this series. WHY THE FUCK can't all writing be this good?
I'll Tell ya why , It was all thanks to Amy hanneng , Now she is with Naughty dog and Sony , Not only that , Back then Developers and writers have , Creativity freedom and , Knowledge , Now there is few of them that actually make great games that are amazing , like Blood-borne and dark-souls .
The LOK series, let alone SR1, is one of the reasons I'm a writer -- I played SR1 too many times as a kid & welp, it stuck lol
oh childhood...
exactly....
...how I miss you so...
It brings back memories
The bit when he wraps his cape around his face is too much! 👌
What would you do if you just woke up to find your lower jaw missing?
@@jimhuffman9434 find and Kill Kain
@Spire Wolves You could say the torrents tore it off when the muscles broke. Of course it is primarily about the difference it sets to Kain. Vampires use their fangs in a bite to drain blood. Raziel was reborn a wraith, with an open jaw to suck souls.
Spire Wolves that and you also have to remember the jaw is only attached to the skull by a hinge joint and tendons and muscle, when those burned away there was nothing to keep it attached.
@@kritikill7949 yeah thats why you aim for it for KOs. its not a coincidence that our two most vulnerable spots aka our nuts/jaw...hang.
way ahead of it's time
Uncharted owes much of it's success to this series.
Best intro of any game ever.
The voice work is best ive ever heard.
This and Abe's Oddysee have the best intros
I like how Raziel actually comments on the bemused faces of his brothers who threw him into the abyss, later in the the game. They look bemused and conflicted about Kain's orders here. It's great writing. Best game intro ever.
Raziel and his Sarafan colleagues, vampire hunters, in a bitter twist of irony turned into vampires by Kain
“The descent has destroyed me. And yet, I lived.”
Whew. That god damn line. 😭
When you realize that the only reason Kain threw Raziel in was in order to break the wheel of fate.
I believe the real reason is Kain foresaw that Raziel was to surpass him so he set the stage for the Elder god to revive him knowing Raziel has the potential to beat him even in his ruinous state
It was to change the future and change nosgoth since raziel was the only beeing with free will after his revival
@@jedidiplomat93 I think it's not that simple and in the same time more obvious for Kain, he noticed that his corruption started spilling over to his children, so he decided to make a gamble on his favorite/firstborn lieutenant revival.
This scene always brings tears to my eyes. The anguish that raziel went through for an eternity can be felt through the screen, through his voice. You are worthy raziel, soul reaver.
This is correct. The music narration and visuals make you feel what's happening. I definitely got goosebumps.
It's because the state of Eternal Damnation
made me cry when I was 10 years old, still makes me tear at 26...
What’s really underrated here, is the amazing music. I mean when he’s tumbling through the water along with the narration, It gives me chills.
It's the second half of "Ozar Midrashim" by Information Society
YOLO Swaggins I know my friend. It fits amazingly
"an eternity passed, and my torment receded; bringing me back from the precipice of madness. the descend had destroyed me... yet, I lived."
Me after finally overcoming my crippling depression
Kappa....You are worthy.
Proud of you!
Now you can give hope for people who are going through it.
The VAs for Raziel and Kain are really on-point. Such a great game, truly in need of a remake.
+fuzbaler86 too bad that the Elder God actor is dead eh?
not really, no. like they can't find another guy with similar enough sound
Yes. Tony Jay passed a couple of years ago.
Wait, with what are you saying with "considering"? Have they announced anything? Pls tell more.
Or are you referring to the stated 50/50 chance spoken by the TR Lead Designer?
if they remake this they burn in hell for heresey
"You are worthy."
Love that part! Tony Jay RIP
Tony Jay the master
the transcendent one
Oh man these were the good times.. that Eidos logo sound alone brings shivers of nostalgia to me.
LeBadman Me too. Better times.
its 2016 and boooy this piece of art still rocks over dozens of games right now
And it always will
2019 and it still does
Still does in 2024.
This game was incredible in every aspect. Gameplay, graphics, sound effects, voice overs, animation, storyline, music, etc. Just amazing. Ahead of its time. This and Shadowman were absolutely excellent.
+cyanidechrist ...bro, I did not expect anyone to remember Shadowman. Love that game!
way ahead of it's time i agree
someone that's both heard of, and loves soul reaver and shadowman?
please make the friendship with me.
agree
such games are so rare
Dont compare shadowman with this lol
Need to continue this series, Best vampire story of all time
the story was finished in defiance. remember all the legacy of kain games are kain's story raziel only played a small part and wound up nothing more than a sword
castledragonsword
Dude...its not just a "sword" its the freakin Soul Reaver, the most powerfull and lethal weapon in all of creation.
yet the vampire killer whip would blow it out the water XD
+castledragonsword They can do a blood omen 3 and continue the story with kain while raziel is in the sword
Dirtydogsnika His soul has always been in the sword, he is the devourer of souls what gave the sword its power to reap souls.
I have goosebumps everytime I see this intro. My first PS1 game.
Used to own the demo disc with this on it. Scares me still.
That's great! 1st Game is an EPIC one.
What madness is this? What pitiful form is this that I have come to inhabit? Death would be a release next to this travesty!
Back in the day I didn't fully appreciate how good the writing in this series is (was 15 when it came out). I still loved the story but looking back now the writing in these games leaves well over 90% of other games in the dust.
"i am destroyed...." "YOU ARE REBORN!!"
" you did not survive the abyss Raziel i have only spared you from total dissolution....the choice is not yours....the birth of one of Kains abominations traps the essence of life it is this soul that animates the soul you lived in....redeem yourself or if you prefer avenge yourself settle your dispute with Kain destroy him and your brethren....become my soul reaver my angel of death...you are weak you must feed.."the old hunger has left me i have no more desire for blood"...you are changed your blood thirst is replaced by a deeper need you have become a devourer of souls"....WOW wat a script that was
this game is heavy in the occult the seraphin order is real and part of russian ortodox church that started with emperoror constantine fake conversion the cain of the bible had in the forhead the mark of the beast that s the real mark the third eye of hell
It's more like 95% to be honest....
Batman: I have the darkest orgin story. My parents were taken from me
Raziel: That's cute
Sixteen years on, the CG and direction still hold up.
Before vampires were glittery there was Kain and Raziel. It's high time this game was remastered for the PS4.
MrPukestick Agreed
Before Vampires were just mindless abominations with really fucked up mouths, there was Kain and Raziel.
ruclips.net/video/jgIt7C9OvdA/видео.html
Not sure if the link'll work or not, but you can definitely tell what I think of Supernatural's vampulure's. (Vampulure: The combination of the word Vampire and Failure. As in, these Vampulure's couldn't hold a candle to the majesty of Raziel and Kain if they tried!)
Èè5w5
Agreed
Hell yea
Seeing this intro as a kid, while watching my dad played, single handedly changed my life forever. The music, the narration, Raziel putting his scarf on... Completely amazing.
"Unspeakable pain, relentless agony, time seize to exist, only this torture, and a deepening hatred of the hypocrisy that damned me to this hell."
What line delivery. Even if you didn't see the footage, you can still feel the agony he is going through from not just the line, but how it is delivered.
One of the best intros to a game
Tumbling, burning with white hot fire, I plunged into the depths of the abyss. Unspeakable pain, relentless agony, time ceased to exist. Only this torture and a deepening hatred of the hypocrisy that damned me to this hell. An eternity passed and my torment receded, bringing me back from the precipice of madness. The descent had destroyed me. Yet, I lived.
fucking epic lines
anfreem21 I recite this verbatim when I describe law school.
lol
Anihilist ... fucking savage
Pretty much sums up my feelings towards any management structure I've worked under
I still to this day can't understand how they got they're cut scenes so smooth on ps1. All the games back in the 90's you could see the flat pixelation, Gran Turismo for example, But when you look at particular moments, for example when Kain walks behind Raziels wings, you can see him walking. That must have taken a lot of work for ps1 engine limitations.
Almost 20 years later, and this intro STILL gives me chills... Why we haven't gotten a remake in a modern engine yet is beyond baffling and borderline INSULTING. And if someone DOES make a remake, Janos help them if they even THINK of tampering with the music... Ozar Midrashim is easily the best main theme in video game history, alongside Bloody Tears from Symphony of the Night and Unreal
If ever there was a game that NEEDS a remake this is definitely it.
Preferably with better controls and the like, as awesome as the storyline is for LOK the gameplay is almost cringeworthy by modern standards.
'Course you can say the same for alot of old adventure games.
wurm skrr
True, i remember lining up some attacks was frustratingly difficult. But the atmosphere of games back then. Superb.
something like the Tomb Raider remake
*****
Too bad Square Enix fucked everything up with the atrocity that is Nosgoth
Johnny Leyenda
Literally no part of that comment is correct beyond the names "Square Enix" and "Nosgoth".
"Given the choice, whether to rule a corrupt and failing empire; or to challenge the fates for another throw - a better throw - against one's destiny... what was a king to do? But does one even truly have a choice? One can only match, move by move, the machinations of fate... and thus defy the tyrannous stars."
+illuvatar27 Defiance.. I don't know if they'll ever carry on, they may not, but as parting shots go, that one was a sniper's "golden BB", right there.
The writing stands on its own. But, goddamn, Simon gives it so much life.
24 years later and this into still slaps. Never fails to give me chills. Make another LoK game already! I'm still in withdrawal!
I wish I had 1% of an idea how badass this was when I was a kid.
Still looks good after all these years. No idea why a movie has never been made. Prob mess it up like they have with every other game to movie franchise
Think you answered your own question there :P
“ Raziel, you are worthy “ such a powerful voice.
Rest In Peace Tony Jay.
To this day, Kain remains the most poetic shakespearian example of "You think you're better than me?!?"
“Redeem yourself. Or if you prefer, AVENGE yourself!”
Ok I gotta say it. I been playing videogames since I was a child, maybe I started when I was 5 or 6. I remember playing Super Mario... although I've played a countless list of games which were extremely good, no game has conveyed so much with an intro as Soul Reaver did... The Music and the meticulous script told by Raziel explaining the event that happened was epic. I can safely say that I don't regret the time I start playing these games because they were so much better than today's games. Today's games are just graphics, which it's not bad, yet the very essence is utterly lost. This is my opinion and I will drag it to my tomb, as for this intro, yes; best intro ever made.
Shiori 日本 video games today misses the hardwork of great story telling relying on gameplay, and actually most triple AAA developers before the ps3 and Xbox 360 finished their games without relying on DLC to fix potholes or finish a game.
Today's games are cash grabs with half the game locked behind DLC and thousands of dollars worth of MTX instead of actual content. And it will never change, because shareholders decide everything, in gaming, and all other industries. Everything on this Earth is about making money, nothing else will ever matter as much as that.
One of the greatest intros of all time to one of the seriously most underappreciated and long forgotten games. Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver was among the best games of the 90s, certainly a top 10 game in the PS1 and Dreamcast library. The music is fitting for its time and the setting is truly unique. Not many games tried what Soul Reaver went for, and not many have since. It still retains its unique feel to this day.
02:25 "There was only one possible outcome. My eternal damnation."
The writing is so.. Unique. It's like they say, poetic even.
One of the best game series in my opinion. I lost count of how many times I played this game series growing up.
Definitely
"An eternity passed" - this is probably one of my favorite bit from Raziel's monologue: I've seen this very intro in almost all the other languages it was dubbed into (Spanish, French, German and my native Italian), but they all fail to properly translate it. I cannot vouch for the German version, but all the others don't get the peculiar shade of the original text: they only convey the idea that a long time passed, while the English version adds another layer by implying that eternity itself might be finite. I know it's just for theatricality's sake...but it does it very well. "Soul Reaver" is probably the first videogame with Shakespearean overtones.
can 100%ly confirm that the german version use the exact "an eternity passed" line and is quite highly regarded for its dub quality... like most german dubs of the past.
He wasnt exaggerating either.. he was literally burning for hundreds of years. Crazy thing to go through.
So at this point Kain knew exactly what was going to happen to Raziel and what it was going to be his and Raziel's rol in History, but when I started playing this game many years ago I couldn't even figure all the plot twists that where going to appear. That's why this game is the best of the best (for me).
Notice Kain's face at 2:53 in pure terror and wonder. It was never about jealous. It was about knowing the future. It was a desperate coin toss at fate.
Epic and timeless in every form.
Raziel: You said it yourself, Kain... there are only two sides to your coin.
Kain: Apparently so, but suppose you throw a coin enough times... suppose one day, it lands on its edge.
Kain didn't knew everything, he knew that Raziel would have come back stronger and immortal and that he would have bond with the soul reaver, and probably even knew that Raziel was the Soulreaver all along, but he apparently knew nothing about the Elder God and what he did to Raziel. I think that's because Kain's aquired his knowledge through Moebius' chronoplastic chamber, wich only shows events that happen/happened/will happen on the material realm, but not the spectral one, even Moebius didn't know what the Elder God really was until he was killed and found himself into the spectral realm.
RZ-357 Didn't mobius speak with the elder god on a frequent basis? I remmember mobius being scared shitless when Kain kills him, and Raziel shows him the elder god for the first time, before that Mobius says that the Elder god will "give him life once more".
Gedeon Ilic
yep, but the Elder God never revealed his true nature to Moebius, nor to the ancient vampires, when raziel impales Moebius with the spirit reaver he is horrified at what the Elder god truly was.
if they gave out awards for best video game intros this game would surely win
What about legend of dragoon intro
Why do I keep finding myself rewatching this over and over again? It’s honestly to perfect of an intro for a game made over 20years ago now! God I want a remaster so badly
_First born of his lieutenants, and the first to receive the gift! I want a next gen remake of this game with nothing changed, just the upgraded graphics. This story was EPIC, and I think they should finish the ending of Defiance as it was a huge cliffhanger in the series!_
I think some game play could be improved
Blahmore Unless they don't try to improve it like they were doing with The Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun it's alright. That game was gonna have a gameplay that looked exactly like a mix between Batman: Arkham series and Shadow of Mordor. I believe a gameplay more like the one seen in the Souls series would fit The Legacy of Kain better.
Darkwratheon BTW, dead sun was looking so bad. i was embarassed for them when i saw it
Thomas B. Comstock Dead sun was fine, as a stand alone game, not part of the legacy of kain.
i've only seen a few images, and 2 or 3 videos.. but i couldn't understand "when" was the action. i know Legacy of kain, and i couldn't ... i dont know... "put" what i saw (of dead sun) in legacy of kain's timeline.
The Music is great for Soul Reaver.
20 years later and I still get chills.
One of the fu*king best vamp stories EVER.
The Grimalkyn Hell yeah brother. Epic af. Imagine Kain and Raziel stepping into the Twilight series lmao those two would slap the shit out of all those panzies.
I get chills every time I watch this intro. It's the best ever made. The voice acting is just perfect.
The last sentence of Raziel "And yet... I lived." was pronounced P_E_R_F_E_C_T_L_Y!
Raziels scream of fear pain and agony and finally hearing "you are worthy" literally brings a tear to my eye. I can relate on so many levels from my life experience it inspires me to keep fighting.
for me this game still has the best story and character for all time
The intro still gives me chills.
This is how the real legend started.
even 2022 , the music and the VA give me chills
How many years have passed since this masterpiece intro was released... and still is my number one.
that moment...where Kain says "cast him in." you can see in his eyes that it's the one last throw of the coin....so that it might land on its edge.
Not really.. this game was originally decided for raziel to kill all the vampires including kain
but the ending was changed long after the intro had been made
@Oculus he's not wrong, do your research before calling other people names, "dumbass"
After so many years and having seen this intro countless times. It's still one of the most epic cinematics I've ever witnessed. The visual design, the writing, the voice acting. It's just great.
20 years later and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver still has one of the best video game intros of all time.
still the best series i have ever played
An eternity passed and there's still no sequel. Tumbling, burning with hot fire. Time ceased to exist as I am still wainting for the sequel
Shakespeare level of script writing on this game, and the voice actors knew this. Two complex characters with so much depth.
Best intro of any video game.
back then i fell in love with the game series at the first cutscene, which was this one.
It’s almost unfair how breathtakingly fantastic this intro cutscene is. Between the incredible writing, stellar voice acting, and iconic soundtrack, this cinematic masterpiece really spoiled me when it comes to video game intros.
These games were piece of art. The story telling, voice acting, gameplay... everything was perfect.
Definitely!
I get chills when he falls into the abyss. I love this series so much. Have action figures, a soul reaver steel curved blade, and all the games. I'm even writing a Dark Fantasy that is partially inspired by this series.
Witcher 3 is the first high fantasy rpg that gave me similar feelings of epicness since this masterpiece
Play Pillars of ethernity.
I still think TW2 had the better story
the Story of raziel is better then With her actually atmosphäre and sidequests make Witcher 3 so good hes a father that Search bis daughter just
This is a game that deffinently deserves a remake. Hopefully it gets remade on the PS5
There isn't a single modern game with writing as good as these games.
For so many years it's still the best intro!
Best beginning to a fantastic game, this soooo needs a 2014 make over!!!
Unfortunately, it will be some time until we see Kain and Raziel back on the game screen. Square Enix is working on a project called "Nosgoth," a multiplayer game focusing on Team Fortress style gameplay featuring humans and vampires; there doesn't appear to be much connection to the LOK series besides the setting.
Robert Mitcham wrong. though it doesnt tell the story of Kain and Raziel themselves, it does tell the story of the remaining vampire clan members.
2018!!!
2018 with Unreal Engine 4!
2021 still waiting, i refuse to lose hope
This cutscene changed my entire life forever.
It's been more than 20 years and this intro still gives me goosebumps. VAE VICTUS!
Brings a tear to my eyes at how epic this was, in addition to nostalgia
Still an amazing intro to this day. I loved the Soul Reaver games. Seriously in need of a remake.
One of the best intros ever for a video game
This new generation is unworthy of playing such a masterpiece. I'm glad I was able to enjoy it in my youth.
Some of greatest voice acting, stories and music you will ever find in a videogame.
Goose bumps man
Damn, that scream chills my bones everytime... The voice acting was so fucking epic...
Makes me feel so good that I know about this game. Look back at myself being dropped back home by grandma and getting straight onto Xbox to play this. Good times.
Imagine a remake of this gem...
Raziel!!! You are worthy!
Amen.
To this day this one ranks in my top 20, if any game deserved a remake this Is the one. And it's the perfect time for something dark..
20yrs later and this intro is still fucking badass!!
The subtleties put into their faces... Kain's reaction when Raziel reveals his wings... Raziels distrust as Kain marvels at them, and the agonizing scream as he falls to the floor after Kain ripped the bones out from the flesh of his wings... it's insane that this was a fucking PS1 games intro in 1999...
Looks more like something that came from late in the PS2 generation... this intro was WAY ahead of it's time.
Raziel: I evolved master. I am now a stronger warrior for you
Kain : *And I took that personally*
Even the smallest details like Me in saying "Cast him in" and Raziel's scream really show you the quality they were aiming for with this game.
