Why Lenovo and Motorola just dropped a ThinkPad phone

  • CES 2023 didn't have a whole lot of phones, but it did have one standout: the ThinkPhone, a collaboration between Lenovo and Motorola that brings the former's ThinkPad laptop brand to the latter's mobile hardware.
    This is a little more than a mere re-brand too, with extra security features and tight PC integration thanks to Motorola's Ready For software.
    Luckily Adam was on-hand at the show to take a closer look at the first ever ThinkPhone, and explain why you might want one, and exactly why this move makes sense for Lenovo and Motorola.

    Ready For *replacing* the need for a ThinkBook is far more appealing than using the laptop with the phone. It's a great desktop replacement feature - just plug in to a Type C monitor or dock and you're good to go, no laptop needed.
    In a mobile workforce with hot desking and WFH, being able to simply issue a phone and *not* a laptop is very appealing.

    Isn't the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 a flagship grade chipset? I'm not sure what part of the specs mentioned are midrange, they all sound beefy (excluding the cameras since they weren't mentioned)

    • @TechAdvisor
      @TechAdvisor  Год назад +1

      Yeah the 8+ Gen 1 is flagship, though last year's flagship to be fair. Really I think it is the cameras that make this more mid-range - the main camera looks decent, but basic ultrawide and depth sensor alongside it - Dom

      @@TechAdvisor Thanks for the clarification, I completely agree. Sounds like a high end power-user device but I'm guessing like other ThinkPad products the media features will be of least concern.

      I got the Edge 30 Pro in 2022, a budget Galaxy S22 Ultra compatitor, this phone has the SoC I missed for 2 months SAD8+ Gen 1, mine has the SD 8 Gen 1 with 12 RAM, if I had the plus or gen 2, I wouldn't even consider replacing it with Honor magic 6 Pro maybe Xiaomi 14 Ultra, but probably I will just replace the battery, I don't game it is not hot. IF Motoro0la hadn't snipped their flagship edge 50 Ultra to SD 8s Gen 3 and did the SD 8 gen 3 instead, I would get it. Now I was amazed when they pulled out Edge 50 Pro with SD 7 Gen 3, but when I saw the price and what the phone does it is brilliant device for the price, smart, but I expected SD 8 Gen 3 from the Ultra!

    I got the Moto Stylus but this will be my upgrade when its time. I use Lenovo, just not the ThinkPad, and this will fit perfectly when the Thinkpad Chromebook drops (hopefully)

    Phone would of been great but the screen is awful for detail.
    I tried two, and both when i punch and zoon in to a photo its blurry, compared to a 5 year old Motorola Z4 that is clear.
    Crazy huh ..
    Also the Thinkphone camera in FHD mode to video is awful, again blurry.
    So disappointed sending the phone is going back.

    Thanks ADAM! , Unfortunately I just got a overpriced Samsung phone BUT can do somethings similairly like Samsungs DeX function be it on a dummie monitor or even virtually through windows itself. Maybe not enterprise grade but none the less its I guess my consilation price. Wish Microsoft cam out with some rocker phones that have awesome intergration with the OS such as one button Phone Camera to PC funtion etc....Peace

    Still waiting for Android 13 on the flagship Motorola Edge 30 Ultra... And in Europe (at least where I live), we're still on the October security patch, instead of the December one. And on their dedicated forum, Motorola is simply silent on the promised updates. If they cannot abide by their own promises, nor do what is expected by the (small) user base they still have, I'd say that the Edge 30 will be my last Motorola smartphone. I am still hopeful that they'll do the right move and put more people on the software side of their smartphone business, but I am loosing this hope day-after-day.

      @TechAdvisor  Год назад +1

      That's a shame to hear! I love the hardware of the Edge 30 Ultra, but my fear was always their software support promise. Sounds like they're definitely not delivering - Dom

      @@TechAdvisor not yet, at least... The introduction of the ThinkPhone brings some hope for long-run support. It's a shame because the device is a beautiful beast, and Motorola is so close to deliver a game changing experience! Well, yes, I enjoy it that much anyway 🤓
