With few noticeable exceptions, most of these games demonstrate how misunderstood Mortal Kombat actually was back in the day. It was much more than just bloody spectacle, it had genuine effort put into it: it was one of the few fighting games that actually cared about story and about fleshing out it's characters, giving each one of them their own identity, as well as having unique dark and sinister atmosphere created by it's stages and soundtrack. Other games lacked those important factors and instead only focused on carnage, which is why most of them became forgotten almost as soon as they came out, while MK survived to this day.
Mortal kombat sucks compared to better fighting games. It only exists and its a thing because they implemented motion capture in a time when that technology was new, and graphics in video games where becoming more complex and realistic
Only a few of these are actual failed attempts to clone Mortal Kombat. Many of these games were misunderstood in their own right. Time Killers was the first to do what it did with in-battle dismemberment. It was also a really dope game. Survival Arts, while it was certainly inspired by MK, was its own game entirely, a cult classic at that. Eternal Champions was one of my most pleasant childhood memories, and the first game was tuned to competitive balance. A couple of corrections: Primal Rage, while encouraged by MK's success, was not inspired by it. The game was a massive gamble and had a costly production. I want to point out that Time Killers was actually a response to the success of Street Fighter, TK came out roughly at the same time as MK. You could say this is like the case of Fatal Fury being a SF clone when they came out at the same time too.
If I were to give MK Like an attempt I would go in a Red Earth and SamSho direction that harks back to Ninja Scroll and other violent anime from the 90s and 2000s.
Fun Fact: Street Fighter EX (1996) almost pushed an M-rating for strong bloody violence, because of Doctrine Dark and Garuda's bladed moves in the Japanese arcade release of the game, and had to be cut out of the revisioned games and sequels to get T-ratings.
I remember a fighting name in 90s if you can help me find it.. The caracthers were a knight, a goblin, a werewolf, a vampire, an elf and more. The knight had a big sword and his armor was white like a cruzader.. The goblin was green and small. I think the name of game starts with BLOOD. This game was on 3D like tekken or virtua fighter. I played this game on PC. I searched everywhere but i cant find it.

It was too bad Cosmic Carnage had bad framerate issues because it was original and a lot of fun.
Regarding Tattoo Assassins, this was actually made by Data East. Namely, their pinball division which is now known as Stern Pinball. As for the game's creation, it all began with an idea by Bob Gale (yep, the same guy who wrote the Back to the Future movies) who would give his screenplays to Joe Kaminkow who was friends with him following the creation of the Back to the Future pinball games (which explains one of the fatalities where the opponent is run over by a DeLorean DMC-12), And one of those screenplays involved tattoos coming to life.

The Mortal Kombat Impact Is Real Yo💯
0:28 that was hypest thing I've ever seen from an Ai
I will say, killer instinct and primal rage are very iconic as well. The remake of KI is a masterpiece.
Great list.... plus gave me new games to look for like weaponlord for the genesis
Fun Fact:
Street Fighter EX (1996) almost pushed an M-rating for strong bloody violence, because of Doctrine Dark and Garuda's bladed moves in the Japanese arcade release of the game, and had to be cut out of the revisioned games and sequels to get T-ratings.
As a working ps2 owner to today 2024 mortal combat one and two along with primal rage was a throw back
I remember a fighting name in 90s if you can help me find it..
I think its advanced dungeon and dragons iron blood, i played it on psx though.
@@joelizzi4445 yes i found it. Its iron and blood. Thanks.
Thumbnail is pure gold.
Did they just use the SNES version of Killer Instinct instead of the arcade version? What on bloody hell?
The SNES port is basically for anyone who can't afford a good PC to emulate the arcade version.
The list has many arcade games, I wanted to make a diverse and representative selection. I agree that the arcade version is the original and most brutal, although the SNES version is the most popular
I played a lot of these games, Primal Rage I loved as a kid and had a bday party in a local Mall Arcade one year, and we played Primal Rage and Mortal Kombat 2 as they were brand new at the time. Also Eternal Champions I owned on the Sega Genesis, and I really loved Cosmic Carnage on the 32X we owned. It was too bad Cosmic Carnage had bad framerate issues because it was original and a lot of fun.
great vid, just wondering why the censor in Blood Warrior?
You can manually unlock the uncensored option in the PCB bios.
That wu tang game looked sick ASF like it could have been it's own series
'Blades of Gory' on Steam has some decent 8 bit styled gore.
Darkstalkers also had some gory attacks that basically ended the match in a NRS-style Brutality.
It's kinda like a cartoony violence though. The Capcom 2d game with gory finishers was Red Earth.
Sub-zero:Just a normal day... oh, well
You should’ve had in barbarian from the c64, the granddaddy of them all!
Which game was the clown car from at the beginning of the video?
Really hope that a cross over character goes from Killer Instinct to be featured in Mortal Kombat. Also, we need a new KI.
Brutal! A couple of games I wasn't aware of, but an interesting list.
Old-school MK Fan here , I freaking Loved WarGods MORE than the embarrassment that was MK4 , , ,
Does MK 4 have Samurai Ronald McDonald?
I didn't think so!
@@autobotstarscream765 Do they keep you medicated or are you undiagnosed ? ?
@@autobotstarscream765 Kabuki Jo is worth 20 of you , , oh and Samurai Shodown has Kabuki warrior KYOSHIRO , , did you remember I didn't think so , , ,
@@wyldelf2685 Kabuki Jo is worth more than all of us as the Ranru god.
I would like to give a mention to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers on the Sega Genesis. It wasn’t bloody, but it did have automatic finishing moves that were really cool.
As clunky of a game as it is, Primal Rage is cool af. I love how you can eat the bystanders to replenish health.
Mortal Kombat more violent than ever but for the most part we don't get violent bloody games anymore. i think it because our video games look to real even in anime
What game was in the intro?
That fatality is brutal
Eternal Champions: Challenge From The Dark Side
Man BioFreaks was a great game.
At "Blood warriors" game there's Kasumi vs Kinshiro. It's quite funny that the first is Kenshiro's official surname, and the second, quite his name ;)
One of these games, ks notorious for NOT having finishers, yet is in the list.
No Cardinal Syn??
Great job!
I don't remember Killer Instinct for the fatalities and gore. I remember it for breaking new ground on ultra-long combos.
Great. Now It Has Screen KO's Just Like Smash Bros.
Good video but i missed the great-grandfather of these games: Barbarian.
No mention of Cardinal Syn (PS1)?
We need more brutal games. I love brutal bloody dismemberment games. Can't wait for MK12
Whether good or bad, if you grew up when these games were relevant, it was a good fun time. Wish they would release blood storm, time killers ect today digitally. Still my fingers are crossed
Eternal champions was a fun game I love that you can't spam some move over and over if you taunt it took away the opponent ability to use special moves
4:00 that monk in the background XD
My brother and mother went to a workshop when I was younger and made an arcade that had tons of games on it and I think cosmic carnage was one of them
Can’t take this seriously once I saw you included Ballz 3D
What a great list of games. I would love to see some of these on the Nintendo Switch.
