These are actually brutal. The immediate suffering during their deaths is what makes these worse. In MK the suffering is swift with little shock. In this game you watch them suffer in torture and die in detail. The suffering in games today is what you dont see. The deaths are gory but swift. When scorpion burns you, you become a skeleton and you dont see the events take place while burning em. in this game its screaming, writhing, boils, snap crack pop. Its like eating i juicy steak, you know what it is, how it got there, but never witnessed the slaughter. ( relax i love 🥩)

Very creative, and detailed artwork. The animated sprites are stunning to look at. ALOT of effort was put into this and it shows so beautifully. Damn this is violently sickening and I’m loving it.
My parents let me play MK because I wasn't violent nor aggresive when I was little, so they think that MK won't activate aggresion within me if I wasn't aggresive before. Kinda makes sense :)
These deaths are brutally punchy and impactful. I havent had a knee jerk reaction to fictional depictions of death in awhile. I thought I was desensitized. I was wrong. These were very well animated especially for it being 16bit.
@@jadedheartszI think it didn’t catch as much flak because the Sega CD didn’t sell too well, this game came out at the tail end of its life, and a lot of the fatalities are very hard to trigger. I have a doctorate in human anatomy and I can attest this is the most realistic depiction of human death ever created. I actually use this game to teach my students because of it's amazing accuracy and I think anyone who plays this game could easily pass any of my exams on their way to a degree.

It wouldn't work as well on 3D graphic. You need extreme detail to create such uncanny horror. And it's pretty much impossible until we could have enough processing power and imagination to create it on realistic 3D HD realm
@@luisherrera2301 You do realize there are tons of fatality driven games out there? This one just piggy-backed off MK like all the others. It's much more plausible that MK simply upped their game cause they had to deliver impact to modern audiences, not cause a short-lived copy cat series gave them ideas. Good luck proving your "theory" though.
Try "Totally Fucking Brutal Overkill". Call me the master of overexaggerating but goddamn, these deaths are something. I mean, I wanna say it's like MKX-tier brutal.
@@mehlessmidori602 Right. Another thing (in theory) is that I think Modern MK Fatalities were inspired by this game's overkill concept. Except that today's MK mechanics are too visually over exaggerating. For instance X Ray combos. I mean wtf! Whether upon the perceived imagination that even though most characters are immortal, if bones are getting shattered, their stances should be to that of being somewhat handicapped after each bone shattering hit? Maybe they have been sticking to that measure of creation because of lawsuit reasons (just my opinion?) Now fatalities in today's mk's are exaggerating visually too, but they are appropriate as they are finishers so.... Eternal Champions (if it were remade) shouldn't grab the x Ray concept of Modern MK. That would piss me off (unless again if their stances get handicapped at low health meters)
@@luisherrera2301 Actually, this game's finishers took inspiration from MK. MK came the year before, and made HUGE success. This game just crashed on the hype train, and tried to copy it.
@@umcaraqualquer3640 I mean idk though. Mechanically and the basic concept, maybe? But the creativity and Gore is completely unique and new in comparison though. If anything, it's emulated from MK.

Pretty awesome how they did these imaginative and well animated (for the system and memory limitations) finishing moves. Some of them have a gore that we only see in the latest Mortal Kombat games.
I think it's pretty smart that they made most overkills leave the character completely destroyed, it would be easier to animate, because everyone would end up looking the same
Imagine the same thing happening to Mario. Direct hit by thermonuclear ballistic missle which has Bowser`s emblem on hull and impact-driven detonator. Considering even just detonating the nuke anywhere in the level spells horrible instant death.

Very underrated, unappreciated game for Sega CD and Sega Genesis. It has aged extremely well, compared to other fighters of the time, imo. The graphics and music are stellar too.
2:50 This one is.....surprisingly tame compared to the others. No bullet holes or the sort. Also, I had been looking for this game for a long time as I remembered playing it during my childhood but not it's name.
I bought this game when it first came out for 60 bucks hahaha. I didn't know there were fatalities in this game until 3 weeks of playing when I hit someone on the stake and watched them burned alive! I didn't know there were 2 different kills for each stage! I'm glad I saw this video, brings back good memories. they should remake this game lol. These fatalities are WAY more BRUTAL than MK at the time. It was just hard to find them. GREAT GAME!!! the pit in this one was a little ridiculous lol. It took like a full minute for the players to fall through the saws, sword, and blades 3 times lmao. I wonder why it never got real big!
It never got big because Sega of Japan wanted to put all their focus on Virtua Fighter and that meant they had to cut the ties with this one. Why they didn't try to keep going though is a mystery to me.
This was actually the second game in the series. Eternal Champions was on the Genesis/Megadrive and only had a single (mostly bloodless) overkill on each stage. But for the Sega CD, there was a sequel called Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Darkside. In that one, there were 2, very gory overkills per stage and the ability to perform a fatality, although it was much harder than in MK: you had to win the first round, then on the second round, do a combo that makes your opponent dizzy while they have less than half HP, THEN you put in the fatality input to outright kill them and win round 2.
There was a version 2 also for the Sega CD. I had both games. I only played with one character...and I too found out about the fatalities by mistake. Then it took me two days to figure out how I did it again...lol man playing this game was fun and exciting. I also figured out the guy with the stick you can not only make his stick fly and hit people but it could turn people into Gold. I think also into a Death Cycle also. That was the guy I played with it was hard to beat me playing him.
I wouldn't say it's anticlimactic, it just takes far too long. They should have just had one of those multi blade section with the aftermath of the second one and then the separate body parts all hit the floor.
Mortal Kombat looks like Street Fighter compared to this! This is disturbingly detailed for a SEGA CD game, they wanted to make sure that this game was memorable, well... Fuck. But in 4:50, I physically cannot do any other thing than laugh my ass out...

well mk fatalities were on Prodigy/AOL/Compuserve and the like if you knew to minimize the ISP browser and launch Netscape instead, so i'd imagine if you looked hard enough you'd find a (very) few eternal champions overkill/sudden death lists. also gamepro and electronic gaming monthly prolly had them? maybe? *C:*
I just love it when 90's and early 2000's games wanted to let the player know that they've lost and suck at the game, so they go out of their way to show you in depth.
My bro and I were gifted the original on Sega Genesis for Christmas. I took the time to learn all the overkills. One existed per level, and no gore was present. Then a few years later one of my brother's friends comes to spend winter break with us and he brings Sega CD along with this game. Our general sentiment was "THAT'S COOL!" as he showed us all of the overkills, the sudden deaths, and each character's MK style fatality executed just like in Midway's fanchise but with the game's own twist: you first had to daze the opponent just like in Street Fighter, and they had to be low health. On top of the overall gameplay improvements the CD version made, the sequel to the first turned out to be one of the most solid console fighters for its time.

You can tell the devs had a lot of fun making these. Despite the gorefest, some are really silly and creative
Ye
I remember playing this game with my brother and we would go crazy when an overkill happened. Some of these i never even seen.
Lord Gargamel that because they make them tone it down.
These are just as if not more over the top and cartoony as MKs fatalities.
Mk is still good
There are a lot of incredibly fucking horrid, suffering-filled deaths in MKX, take a look at Kenshi's fatalities for instance.
Youre talking about the original MK ? Because the new ones seem to purposefuly make the deaths take longer to try to be shocking, which is just cringe

Very creative, and detailed artwork. The animated sprites are stunning to look at. ALOT of effort was put into this and it shows so beautifully. Damn this is violently sickening and I’m loving it.

I'm still surprised my parents let me play this game when I was little.
Derrick Haggard same with my parents for Mortal Kombat.
Me too.
Derrick Haggard my mom had a problem with me playing Mk glad my dad let me play it
My parents let me play MK because I wasn't violent nor aggresive when I was little, so they think that MK won't activate aggresion within me if I wasn't aggresive before.
Kinda makes sense :)
Same here, but my parents let me and my sister play Mortal Kombat during childhood, both Genesis and SNES versions.
These deaths are brutally punchy and impactful. I havent had a knee jerk reaction to fictional depictions of death in awhile. I thought I was desensitized. I was wrong. These were very well animated especially for it being 16bit.
yeah i'm surprised moral guardians didn't freak out over this game like they did over Mortal Kombat.
@@jadedheartszI think it didn’t catch as much flak because the Sega CD didn’t sell too well, this game came out at the tail end of its life, and a lot of the fatalities are very hard to trigger. The gore level in this game is on par with MKX and MK11. Yeah, I honestly think it’s gorier than the previous MK installments.
My theory is that the Modern MK fatality concept is somewhat inspired from this game?
@@luisherrera2301 You do realize there are tons of fatality driven games out there? This one just piggy-backed off MK like all the others. It's much more plausible that MK simply upped their game cause they had to deliver impact to modern audiences, not cause a short-lived copy cat series gave them ideas. Good luck proving your "theory" though.

Mortal Kombat: fatality
Eternal Champions: overkill

I really want to see this series make a comeback. The premise was cool and I enjoyed all the unique characters that this game had to offer. It could easily be expanded on. It probably couldn't compete with Mortal Kombat, but I wouldn't say no to playing this if it were redone.

indeed. i've heard of this game in the 90's thanks to gamepro magazine but I never played or even see a gameplay. Pretty awesome how they did these imaginative and well animated (for the system and memory limitations) finishing moves. Some of them have a gore that we only see in the latest Mortal Kombat games.
Sega should develop the third game that was canceled, for the Sega Dreamcast.
I think it's pretty smart that they made most overkills leave the character completely destroyed, it would be easier to animate, because everyone would end up looking the same

I want to say why always pepole when they see a gory kill they names it fatality? They are overkills in this game!

Wasn’t anticlimactic at all, gotta admit they really used their imaginations and it left me with a twist the first time I saw that fatality.
“STOP HE’S ALREADY DEAD!”
I wouldn't say it's anticlimactic, it just takes far too long. They should have just had one of those multi blade section with the aftermath of the second one and then the separate body parts all hit the floor.
That was exaggerated
Mortal Kombat : We have blood and gore in our fighting game! No one can do worse than us!

I only played the Sega Genesis version.
