GameCube Game Preservation With The SD2SP2

  • Take a look at what I went through in order to backup my GameCube games using an SD2SP2. Spoiler: it was really easy!
I've already got my GCN games backed up on my Wii but that means having to play them on the Wii. The picture quality isn't as good as what I get from the GameCube, especially with the digital HDMI adapter installed. I'd rather play my games on that, which is what lead me to trying out the SD2SP2.
Shout outs go to the Swiss and GBI communities who work tirelessly to update and improve their software on GameCube!

Fun fact! You can set up in-game resets in Swiss. Put a copy of Swiss on your SD2SP2's memory card, call it igr.dol, and change the in-game reset global setting to igr.dol. You can close your current game and return to Swiss by pressing B + R + Z + D-Pad Down, without having to powercycle the console!
Other fun facts: the sky is blue and the grass is green.
    Stay safe everyone ❤

      Nice video.
My advice for WiiU is to use it for only WiiU exclusive games only.
It can be tempting to make it the "Ultimate Nintendo Console" and cram every WiiU, Wii, and GameCube game on there in addition to all the Wii Homebrew and emulators... But the truth is that the GameCube has better video output than the WiiU for GC games, not to mention controller ports.. And the Wii is cheap and easy to modify and is the best home for Wii-related content.
I have my WiiU modified to just have the handful of WiiU exclusive titles that haven't been (or can't be) brought to the Switch. Kinda a raw deal for the console that had so much potential...

      As for the Xbox..
Take an Xbox, add a 2TB HDD, XBMC4Gamers, an XBOX to HDMI solution (like a modified Wii2HDMI adapter), an OGX360 & your 360 controller of choice... And you've got yourself one hell of a console...

This is absolutely mental, the mere fact that people just come out with all of these mod chips, utilizing the serial port 2 which was never used officially, saving people thousands upon thousands of dollars and they'll be about to play the GameCube library for free with an SD card. This community really is fantastic.

Unfortunately I've not found a board yet thick enough to make consistent contact in the port, and I've bought four thus far. It's really hit and miss with any of the four as to when they'll work or not - sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. They all work great if one puts a layer of solder on the pads and makes them fit appropriately. Why can't someone just pull their head out of their Fing ass and do this originally? So stupid.

I hear that not all SD2SP2s are made equally. Try checking that it's sitting properly in the port (not wobbling around). If it's loose, try adding a little solder to the pads to make it sit in the port a bit tighter. Ensure your SD card is formatted to FAT32 and that the SD2SP2 is inserted the right way. If those fail, it might be a duff one. Luckily they're pretty cheap and you can grab a second one. I've had no issues with the one I bought from Amazon 👍

With an SD2SP2 you don't need to hardmod to run your game backups. You will need a way of gaining access to it via Swiss though. In my case, I use an Action Replay disc which then loads Swiss from the Media Loader card (they were bundled together). I just keep the disc in the GameCube and, a few seconds later, I'm in the Swiss menu where I can load any game from my catalogue from a micro-SD card via the SD2SP2.

@@TheMultiGenGamer right ,that makes more sense, those AR devices are really expensive now, funny I always wished I had one but instead somehow I wound up with 3 unopened DS lite AR's
I was also so pissed I had those and not the GC version especially when the SD gecko came out , but the other day after taking another look at GC modding and rechecking a box of old gaming accessories in my closet to make sure I didn't have one
I saw that I had 3 AR' s for DS lite instead ,all new and sealed, decided to check Ebay and my jaw dropped
buy it now was $320 !
glad I never had the GC one now because I would have opened it if I did and also these are somehow worth more now, that wasn't the case before as best I can remember.
Anyways my best option for the GC then is
either to write a hacked sav file to my memory card with a modded wii and
GC memory manager , and then I can boot swiss from either a SD gecko clone or a the SD2SP2 right?
or I can buy one of those kits from aliexpress that comes with a xeno chip, a SD2SP2 and a boot disc, (which I assume or at least hope is a pressed disc and not a burned disc so that it will read without doing a POT mod,)I assume I don't need a SD gecko if I have a game with a hacked sav memory card and a SD2SP2
but I might pick one up anyway
xeno seems like an easy enough install but if it wont read the included boot disc without a POT mod then I rather go the hacked game sav route, as the POT mod looks like a PITA

I can't speak for the hacked save file approach but if it gets you into Swiss then it'd definitely be worth trying. I wouldn't recommend getting an SD2SP2 from AliExpress though. Someone else in these comments has had problems getting theirs working from there. See if you can get one from Amazon 👍

    • @TheMultiGenGamer
      @TheMultiGenGamer  2 года назад

I take it you're asking because you have a GameCube that doesn't have the second serial port. As far as I know the first port was only ever used for the broadband and dialup adapters. If support to do this in the first port is possible, it would mean you couldn't have a broadband adapter installed at the same time.

I tried to download Swiss & GBI into an SD card & a Micro SD card, & It doesn’t work for me. I formatted them to Fat32 (because my computer wouldn’t let me format it to Fat16) & it doesn’t work. I tried copying the DOL files to the SD cards & it still didn’t work. Can you please help me out?

Is this using an SD2SP2? It may just be that the board is duff and needs replacing. Not knowing where you bought it, I'd advise avoiding places like aliExpress or Wish for this kind of thing.
Edit: I'm also assuming you have a means of booting to Swiss like an SD Media Launcher or a Swiss memory card.

Can someone please explain the difference between SD2SP2 and GC loader???

    • @TheMultiGenGamer
      @TheMultiGenGamer  2 года назад

They're fairly similar as they both let you run ROMs off SD cards. The difference is that the GC Loader physically replaces the optical drive in the GameCube, whereas the SD2SP2 uses an otherwise unused serial/expansion port, allowing you to keep the original optical drive so you can still use discs.

@@TheMultiGenGamer Kind of new to this but wanted to ask you if the SD2SP2 can launch swill + action replay ? (no mods) . I have the original gamecube (pal) and im curently using swiss with the sd memory card in order to force 480p on my pal games. All good except 1 game and that is Odama. Game works but the problem is the microfone.
So I basically have in memory slot 1 the original memory card with saved game form long ago, in memory slot 2 the sd card(and using the action replay to load swiss). Im starting the original disc game in forced 480p. When the game starts it asks me for the Microphone. So I remove the sd card with swiss from slot B and plug in the Microphone BUT its not recognized. I suspect that slot B still remembers the sd card with swiss !?
I did the opposite than, microfone in slot B and sd card in slot a, the game loads in 480p and it says there is no memory card or save to find. I remove the sd card from slot A and insert the gamecube memory card and its not loaded/ not recognized because slot A probably still remembers the sd card?
If i dont use swiss and just start the pal game in 480i with the Microphone and original memory card all works but obviously its not in 480p.
So someone in a forum told me that probably using a SD2SP2 could fix the problem as the 2 memory card slots will be free. So, can i just put swiss on a SD2SP2 and launch it with action replay than ?
      Cheers
