    Whitney easily crossed over to pop because of her immense and undeniable talent. That left some resentment from some of her fans within the black community. She was literally booed at certain award shows which was so undeserving because she is a beautiful soul. Her comment about the "black department" was just an insider acknowledgement to them that she has not forgotten where she came from and would never turn her back on her roots. As a black woman myself, I loved that Whitney's voice transcended race and nationality. A voice so superb and filled with so much emotion, deserved to reach as many people as possible. She inspired so many people and changed their lives, made people believe in goodness and gave hope. Thank you so much for these reactions. Any person who celebrates Whitney Houston's voice as much I do, is a friend of mine.

      Actually it was sarcastic towards Billboard having a black department where her Janet and Prince and MJ ruled and their music fought to move to chart on pop - I still have billboard copies that say “Black Charts” yes BET black tv did her wrong but they should have slammed Billboard practices - the audience who boot’s her were angry at the system but to ignorant and mean to know Whitney still today charts better than Anita Baker and Janet

      Whitney is a Gospel singer first n foremost- she didn’t want a pop success she wanted to sing good music … the industry got greedy and never did right by her … whites and her own race were cruel…she knew she could always depend on God where her blessings flowed.. not humans and she taught her daughter the same.. I started loving Whitney Houston in 1984 when she sang on the soap opera As the World Turns and it Nick's wedding and her and Jermaine Jackson sang nobody loves me like you do! I needed to know who she was so luckily Jermaine Jackson put out an album in 1984 and he recorded IF YOU SAY MY EYES ARE BEAUTIFUL w Whitney Houston she sang the paint off that song and you could hear the magic in her voice then the next year towards the fall Saving All My Love and You Give Good Love came out I had to have the whole album and finally it went public right after school I went to the record store and purchased it on day of release. It was then that I knew she was the bees knees and the ants pants, I needed to practice singing her songs and she was going to be my vocal teacher in my head.
    Fast forward 1986 I went to my first Whitney Houston concert, Constitution Hall I had won tickets off the radio, that was the only way I was going to go to this concert if I win tickets my father was not going to give me the money. I won front row seats and a backstage pass to meet WH I had the opportunity to meet her and the cat was trying to get my tongue and all I could say you are so beautiful with a voice to match I took a picture with her and I was the envy of all my friends. I was so enamored that I looked at that picture every day and relive that night over and over until 1999.
    1999 Wang Center Boston Massachusetts again trying to win tickets off the radio, I set up three phones calling hanging up and pushing speed dial I finally won backstage tickets and since the tickets I won were even closer to the stage 2nd row to the front middle stage I was in heaven and Whitney sang her heart out and gave us an experience and I said boy, I wish I could sing like that well I finally got to meet her backstage talking about making my way to the backstage to meet her with my pass around my neck and my picture of me and her in 1986. Do you remember be 13yrs later and when I showed her the picture she said baby you grew up look at you your handsome self. I asked to take another picture with her and we did. I was grown man and I was beside myself. I loved her voice it just moves you in a way no other female artists can. Whitney was the total package tall, beautiful, and had a voice like an instrument that is so heavenly it will make the hair stand on end on the back of my neck and my arms I would feel like a cat. No one can move me with their voice like she can, especially when she sings gospel.

    the medley was her band director's idea, rickey minor, he brought her the billie holiday version of loverman and the barbra version of my man. it was also his idea to do porgy in 94 & he was the one that did the arrangement for her superbowl performance. but he says she always had an appreciation for jazz music.

    • @odumosuolusegun2781
      @odumosuolusegun2781 Месяц назад

      he lied. Whitney was singing porgy on tour in 93, there are 3 live versions from 93 on you tube. She also was singing it as a medley. The 1994 narrative was for Ricky to take credit, forgetting that there is RUclips and proof that she sang it prior ro the AMAS 94 version.. Whitney was a huge Jennifer Holiday fan and if you read Robyn's book and followed her concerts circa 1985 to 1988, she was singing I am changing from billie holiday and we are family from the dream girls. She loved Jennifers big voice and wanted to have a sound as big as that. Rickie minor in the 80s was a mere band member and he had zero influence on what she sang. The Jennifer holiday song was her idea not his. He lied.

    Thanks for reacting to this! If I didn't suggest it, I 100% would have at some point lol. It's one of my top 5 fave Whitney live performances for sure. Yes, that was indeed Dionne Warwick, Whitney's 1st cousin! And I definitely second Paws recommendation to check out her duet with Mariah Carey, especially since you're exploring both of their catalogues! When You Believe is criminally under appreciated, given that two of the greatest vocalists in the history of recorded music collaborated, and it's really a great song to boot! Like Paws said, the two live performances show different flavors of each singer, but I think in terms of the amazing chemistry between Whitney and Mariah you can't go wrong with the Oprah performance

    I thought she said “how to like me now” was in response to being booed at the Soul Train Music Awards for singing “too white” I. Her recordings. The community accused her of not being black enough and I feel it was a major contributor to the direction she went with her music and lifestyle. Basically they questioned her identity and was constantly asked in interviews about singing “too white” . Like she turned her back on the community

    • @jobuck879
      @jobuck879 Год назад +4

      Dan she said “How YOU like me now?” And it was her referring to being booed at the Soul Train Music Awards a few years before this performance. But to actually suggest that her criticism from the black community is a reason for her personal issues is a far reach. Whitney had issues long before being booed. But Whitney also never worried about the criticism from the black community. The reason why is that for one Whitney was first and foremost a gospel singer, gospel is deeply rooted in the black community, Whitney didn’t have any concerns about her identity. All you have to do is listen to her live performances vs her studio versions-they are totally different. Plus add in the fact that she addressed that whole “she sings too white “ criticism in multiple interviews.

      @@jobuck879 Stop minimising the impact of what those boos and criticism did it to her. Whitney herself, sister in law & Robyn did admit that it affected her. Al Shalpton was the one spearheading that screwed up narrative. It didn't even make sense why he singled her out when all black singers were signed to white labels. Most of covers were from black musicians.
      This is why she ended up with Bobby. I guess in her own way she was trying to prove a point that she was black enough .

    • @jobuck879
      @jobuck879 9 месяцев назад

      @@Leira6267 She was with Jermaine Jackson, Eddie Murphy, Randall Cunningham and Michael Jordan. 2 of those men were not very “respectable” --Jermaine was married, Eddie was a womanizer , he dated Whitney and his first wife at the same time. Nobody is minimizing what transpired during the Soul Train awards. However I’ll believe Whitney over Al when it comes to how she felt. I’m so sick of people telling someone else’s story even though that person has already told their own story. To say a woman ended up with someone because of booing her is pathetically ignorant. Whitney was always black. Only Bosch people deemed her “not black enough” whatever tf that even means. She knew who she was. She was attracted to some bad boy types, not because she wasn’t black enough but because that was her preference. She ended up with sorry ass Ray J too. Don’t project your idiocy onto the rest of us who have more than an adequate IQ.

    The reference to the black department. Whitney's 1st single you give good love was a classic a classic R & B produced hit. The assumption was that Whitney would be a soul/r&b artist but Clive Davis, head of arista records and industry legend had other plans. Clive wanted a pop diva. In the mold of Barbara and Diana, not Aretha. following You give good love there was a turn in her music to pop. some critics in the black music world accused her of being a "sellout "; saying her music sounded "too white". She was even booed at a black awards show briefly in the late 80s. The I'm your baby tonight album was Whitney's direct response to her urban music critics. and as you can see, Whitney's gamble paid off

    Since watching her in 1988 in Frankfurt I've been a fan of Whitney Houston. When she smashed "One moment in time" flawlessly she left people speechless. She interacted with the audience a lot. This young beautiful and highly talented woman was special and everybody knew amd felt it that day. She enjoyed singing live and that's why she always topped her studio versions. People always try to compare her with Mariah Carey but that's nonsense . They are two complete different singers with different styles and songs. I'm definetely prefer Whitney but I like and admit Mariah too. Her live performance of "Vision of love" is absolutely amazing. At the end of the 90s Whitney and Mariah did a song together "When you believe" It was very nice. Unfortunately Whitney's voice was already damaged and she couldn't use the full range of her voice she once had. I absolutely love Whitney's " I have nothing" live Billboard 1993. "The greatest love of all" Wembley 1988 is also a great example of 80s Whitney live performances.

I have a deep affection for Celine, but she was not at all a talented improvisational vocalist, and she certainly did not embody the character of Whitney. She performed virtually identical renditions of her albums ( which is ok and she was great at replicating them -no hate). Whitney has performed this song on numerous occasions; however, none of them sound remotely similar, difficult to choose which version is superior. This is due to the fact that she sang the song in accordance with her emotions and the connection she felt to the lyric text on that particular day, rather than the manner in which people anticipate her to sing.

    Sugiro os videos do cantor gospel Gabriel Henrique, ele é super talentoso, carismático, incrível, espetacular. Faz covers da Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion e outros. Considerado o rei do whistle.

    It was about those that work in the African American department of Arista, and the Grammys! You may not know but the music industry, just as a lot of other industries are prejudice! They would not even play Micheal Jacksons music when MTV first launched! Micheal Jackson is the artist that put MTV on the Map and made it a house hold name! Micheal Js' label at the time threatened MTV, that if they do not play MJs videos and music that they would not allow them to play other white artise that were on the same label! She meant nothing bad, she was just saying some truths about having other people beside all white folk making these decisions! So, do some reading and learn a bit of history about the gap!

      The Whitney not being black enough was started by Al Shalpton. The dude with the civil rights movements. He felt Whitney wasn't back enough.

    Whitney has one of the great pop and R&B voices, but her style does not suit Loverman and My Man particularly well in this performance. Her singing is good, but I don't think she really crosses over to jazz/standards as well as Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, or Natalie Cole did. All The Man That I Need shows her strong suit.

    I always felt very picky with the drumming in this one. Honestly it kinda ruins it for me a bit. Nothing could ruin her voice, of course, but the drumming takes me outta the experience, it sounds monotonous. The drumming in the Welcome Home Heroes version sounds a lot better and it has variations. Idk, maybe I've just listened to so much stuff from her
