Polly Bergen is stunning!
Surprisingly, the Tennessee law banning the teaching of evolution was still in effect at the time of this show. It was not repealed until 1967.
Scopes was teaching gym and wasn't even in biology, they wanted to have a test case to lose on purpose in order to carry on to the supreme court at a later date.
I loved Polly Bergen's explanation on disqualifying herself from game #1. “No I was not at the trial.” Good one Polly.
She was a very bright and funny person. Loved her.
She was quite witty at times lol.
20:24 Kitty asks contestants 1 and 2 "do you see the penguins in the north". They both said yes. How would contestant No. 1 say yes if he really was from where he claims to be?
I was sure it was number 3 for that reason. So odd.
Alaska is not the North Pole. Still, I may be misremembering but it's familiar to me to have read once of a breed of penguin that swims up the Pacific and beach on the Alaskan islands.
Most penguins are in the south, Antarctica and southern oceans.
"Good night and God bless you." You won't hear that line spoken on television today.
That last one, with the Eskimo guy...I thought penguins were only at the South Pole. I think he fibbed.

At first this comment stumped me. I think he REALLY meant, he'd never seen her with so LITTLE clothing on (usually in dresses, etc.). I really enjoyed seeing his discomfiture and her great reaction (a beautiful gal, BTW). ; )

John Scopes was living in my hometown of Shreveport when he died in 1970. I was 8, so I don't remember much of it, just the mention of it. My great uncle worked with him at United Gas in Shreveport. I am looking at a picture of him right now, and cant tell which one of them is him. I guess I'll find out in a minute or two.
The Scopes trial happened about an hour or so from where I live. It was a bit of a farce, in that the whole thing started as an attempt by the "city fathers" (as they were called then) of Dayton, Tenn., to boost Dayton's profile and, hopefully, its economy. The courthouse in which Bryan and Darrow went at it still stands, and the trial is still re-enacted every summer. Good episode.
A truly historic show. How much other footage of the real life Scopes is out there today?
+Jake Mabe You're right! The trial was a total farce. The ACLU had run newspaper ads in Tennessee stating that it would pay for the defense of anyone accused of teaching evolution, and Dayton saw a chance to cash in. I recall reading that at one point Dayton was threatening to sue Chattanooga to keep them from have this kind of trial first. John Scopes was recruited to teach evolution by the city fathers, he did, was duly arrested, charged and tried. He was, if I recalled correctly, NOT convicted, but Darrow changed his plea to guilty. Scopes was fined $100.00, which the same city fathers paid, and offered his job back. He declined, only because he had gotten a better offer. The play mentioned in this episode, Inherit the Wind, is utter BS, and if it had been written true to actual events, it would have been a comedy. Scopes did NOT go to prison as the hero of the play, the judge conduced himself with proper decorum in the court room, and followed proper legal procedure, and William Jennings Bryan died shortly afterward, largely because he was old, and sick. It's interesting to note that Dayton city fathers' scheme is still working to pull in paying suckers, going on a hundred years later.
John Satterfield Yes and that silly movie was so lop sided it killed it. It was a joke the whole scheme and yet idiots mostly atheist just praise just like this Kitty gal did right on this show. You would think at least people in show business wouldn't be such big fat suckers . Lol

Re: John T. Scopes, I highly recommend American Experience: Monkey Trial, first aired February 17, 2002 on PBS. I was surprised to learn that the trial began life as a publicity stunt. The town leaders of Dayton, TN, wanted a spectacle to attract tourists, and Scopes volunteered to be the defendant. Of course, the trial took on a life of its own. Inherit the Wind (1960), while a terrific movie with a stellar cast, oversimplified the conflict, and the motivations of Darrow and Bryan. It was more than The Bible vs. Science.
#1 best body. Easy to pick.
And best smile for the camera.
There was a memorable 70's episode where the central character was an expert on apes, and all three contestants were dressed as apes. I thought one of the Scopes contestants should have been dressed that way, but the reveal was just as good!
Polly Bergen was hilarious. With the beauty experts she spends the entire time trying to get pointers on making her 'derriere' smaller and what to do for her flat feet!

This was the time frame where Bud started coloring his hair regularly. Just compare his hair color here with TTTT shows in the mid to late 50s
None of the last group knew what they were talking about because there are no penguins in Alaska. They're only in Antarctica and the far-south of South America. And Nome isn't even part of the Aleutian Islands--it's on the mainland.
It was very interesting to see the real John T. Scopes. And on another note, I wonder why the "right" contestant in the last round said that Nome was on the Aleutian Islands. That city is nowhere near the Aleutians.
He misunderstood the question and kept thinking about the northern most city.

I knew instantly who Debbie Drake was, my sister had a Debbie Drake doll in the 60s, and I painted her blonde hair green, and caught hell.
I gave my dolls Magic Marker measles. Nice name. She is an idol of mine.
I knew who she was right away too. I have the book series called "Whatever Became Of...?" by Richard Lamparski & she was featured in one of them. And her blonde hair gave her away too.
When she appeared on THE TONIGHT SHOW, she had Johnny Carson join her in an exercise demonstration...when they both placed themselves on mats, he cracked "Would you like to phone the desk and leave a call?"

Barrow is most likely the furthest city north.
The whole problem with that question was how it was asked. The question posed was "what is the city furthest north on the Aleutians?". Nome is nowhere near the Aleutians, and one would be hard pressed to find any "city" on the islands. I don't know why he agreed with the Nome answer, nor why he answered yes to the penguin question.
Eskimo is no longer used .., they are now Inuit

Sir Mix-a-Lot would have interrupted Kitty to ask, "Why would you want to reduce the derriere?"

I know they're SWORN to tell the truth but I swear some of them sneak in a "lie" sometimes and that would have to be an example of one. Or they may answer like they're not sure etc but Penguins in Alaska - give me a break. It would be like someone from Darwin, Australia saying no, no crocodiles here or Lancaster County, Pennsylvania not knowing what the Amish are.

Glad you enjoyed it! I'll be posting every weekday at least through the end of the 1960 shows, then might need to take a short break again. But I'll do my best to keep posting regularly from now on. I wish I had the time to actually, you know, WATCH the shows. I've only actually watched about 30 of them so far!

12 days after this show aired my mother ushered me into this world for the first time. Really cool show and would love to see the one from 10/24/60 - that would have been my first one if my folks were watching it

Nome is not in the Aleutian Islands but on the Seward Peninsula (which would have been the correct answer to Polly's first question). And Nome is not the westernmost town on the Peninsula (Contestant #1 & #3).
So it can't have been contestant #1, 2 or 3!! I thought the actual person was sworn to tell the truth!!
wonkabo...you are absolutely correct! Penguins are found in the southern hemisphere, the northernmost population is located in the Galapagos Islands.

Bob Hope has been the Mystery Guest on What's My Line a number of times and always got major applause. Maybe this showed aired the same week he appeared there.
Tom Poston toned down his act a bit except for the 2nd game. Don Ameche was always no-nonsense on this show. Kitty doesn't laugh as much as a few years before. Thanks for the video.
Her husband may have been ill at the time. Just a little more than a year after this program was aired, Moss Hart died of a heart attack at the age of 57.
This was a wonderful thing to see, I'd never actually seen Scopes speak before (though his autobiography was a good read). He was a great man, we need more like him. And yes, I know he agreed to be the defendant in a test case, and probably never actually taught evolution, but that wasn't the point. He agreed to make a stand for the freedom to teach science, and he suffered for it. Kudos to you, Mr Scopes, and thank you.
How could he be convicted if he never committed the crime?
@@rickrick5041 He was charged with teaching from a chapter on evolution, although he wasn't sure he'd actually actively taught it, as opposed to simply reading through it with the class. But he told the ACLU that if they could prove he'd done enough to qualify as a defendant, then he'd be willing to stand trial. Scopes willingly let himself be charged, and encouraged his students to testify against him, he wanted to shine a spotlight on the law, in the name of academic freedom. Even at the time people questioned the meager evidence against him, but the jury convicted him anyway.
@@Silver_Owl Thanks for the information. He could have appealed in that case. I see a flaw though. If the evidence was so flimsy he risked winning the case on no evidence instead of there being a right to teach evolution as science. Then it would make no precedent.

@Steven Attanasso I don't think America is especially worse today than before, but I absolutely agree about the penguins, well noticed! I didn't watch that bit before. That's very odd. And since he went first, he could have said there were no penguins without giving it away, and the others could have followed his lead! I dunno, maybe the guy goes to the zoo a lot.....

I was 11 years-old in 1960 and there was something awfully nice about woman of that era. The tights and leotards were sooooo much sexier than what women wear today! AND, the women, (as you can see by these 3) were built so much nicer. How about that line read by the host, Bud Collier...'how can i fatten up skinny arms?' Man, those were the days for girl watching because of the clothes, hair, built bodies, etc.

There use to be North Atlantic penguins, the Auk, but they were hunted to extinction. There were manatees in the Pacific Northwest but were also hunted to extinction.

Emperor penguins - males sit for 65 days! during the winter while the females go and get lots of food to be ready for next egg laying - they care for the chicks. and the males go grab some fish :}

With the #2 segment with Ms. Debbie Drake , either Tom Poston or the third contestant should disqualified themselves. The second contestant although attractive did not look like an exercise queen . Tom Poston's friends wife looked the part to rival Drake . Both women looked impressive to have multiple children .

I've went inside the Dayton, TN, courthouse in the 1990's, and the courtroom on the 3rd floor is closed off, preserving the way it looked in 1925. They did hold court outside, due to the heat and the large attendance.

I'm a huge fan of Scopes. The trial brought attention to the idiotic law, I don't care if it was arranged, or if he really taught evolution.
Whether you like a law, or don’t ,or think it’s idiotic, or not, that doesn’t make it unconstitutional. The law was upheld as constitutional by the state supreme court in the end.
I do think it’s idiotic that a law has to be broken in order for it to be challenged on constitutional grounds. I don’t know how that an be changed.
And I'm not a huge fan of Tennessee and its laws. It remains ignorant still today and a threat to common sense and human rights.

I think they should teach both because evolution is a theory not a proven fact like 2&2, and the creation is called a theory too. So teach our kids everything and also don't destroy history like statues or books. Our children shouldn't be so ignorant that they can't make up their own minds about our history good parts and the bad parts. I know mine sure aren't. And my 13 grandkids aren't either. Hiding the facts is a sin. Lol

Look, it's the evolutionary THEORY ...which explains a lot, but NO theory is 100% fact, but is an attempt to explain phenomena. And, the Bible is almost completely metaphor/allegory/myth...which doesn't necessarily mean it's false, but certainly any truth it contains is not the same kind of "truth" as what you read in the N.Y. Times. And, BTW, the "theory" does NOT teach that humankind comes from apes, but that men and apes descend from a "common ancestor," a terribly important distinction. ; )
