Thank you for this! It helped us pinpoint and fix the issue we had on a VW Up! 1.0 MPI, thus avoiding the need to replace the entire unit. Keep up the good work!!

My Golf had the P0222 code and I watched a lot of videos about the solution but your video helped to me with the real solution, I had already done a visual check of the sensor and I saw everything fine until I saw your video and surprise, all the wires were desoldered. Thank you so much, you took me away a big headache, my car is working fine now. Greetings from Mexico. Cheers.

I just had this unit fail on my 2016 Golf 7 Sportsvan, I was 600km from home in another province. I had to get it towed to a nearest VW dealer, where they diagnosed this unit as the fault. I stripped it, same as the 1 in your hands, all good mechanically, also noticed the less than hair thin wires, but did not attempt to do any checks as yet, until I was back home with access to my tools. For signal wires, it is very strange to have wire that thin in place, but, I am quite sure there was either a good engineering design reason or a product management decision involved, reliability vs money from selling replacement units every 100000 km.

    • @mervingovender4908

Stripped unit again and, yep, mine had 3 of the 4 wires loose, the wires seem to be spot/tack welded similar to how they connect up lithium batteries. Crazy VW charged me R16000 incl diagnostics, labour, new part. 😢

I tried this and it work for a little then the issue came back. But I noticed that there was some green non-conductive residue from the pcb on the metal contactor seen at 4:38. I wiped it away with rubbing alcohol and it worked again after verifying with a multimeter!

Many, Many thanks Sir for this quick and easy fix!!!
Unfortunately mine lasted only one day, possibly due to extreme Hot that we have these days.
Again I repeated the soldering and now is working fine again. However, I ordered a new Throttle Position Sensor (cost 220€) in case this fail again and will eventually solder the old with Silver type soldering that has double the melting point of Lead & equivalents.
Nevertheless you save me from VW Service Tooth bite and this is the most crucial thing here. and of course the quick fix time.
    Many thanks from Greece.

Thanks! Using your video I was able to fix my problem. Tip for others.. Replace all the wires with new wire.. I'm sure the originals are designed to fail. Being so tiny and fragile attached to a vibrating engine sure isn't smart design.

    • @motosystemltd
      @motosystemltd Год назад

Similar wires inside esp lateral acceleration sensor but sensor with board itself is glued to suspension pods due to nature of sensor, little flexible aluminium wires making sense, also not possible to solder with regular soldering station. I'm am suprise they make this in tps.. In older vehicles plain potentiometer recommended test by oscilloscope or just multimeter for resistance when slowly moving. In Your case without 5v power supply and oscilloscope not possible to test this type. Much more reliable design compare to regular potentiometer..Good job specially when throttle may cost half value of car. Just cleaned BMW E46 2.8 potentiometer and may help for some time, new one £600 at dealer..

Thank you so much. I have already fixed mine with a 10a fuse wire, as described by another user. Any idea why Magneti Marelli used that flimsy wire? Could it be made like this not to last and replace the TPS at some point?
Now I see such wires I can not stop thinking about what would have happened if these wires failed while passing a car on the route with another car coming from the other direction. It is almost hazardous !!!

I dont know why the welding dont match with the metal part. Can you tell me the material you use yo weld new wires please.

Excellent video. Currently have a 2018 Passat 1.4 TSI in limp mode and rough idle. Of course, it's only weeks past end of warranty and dealer wants to charge.
Getting code P0638 (Throttle Actuator Range/Performance), EPC light, engine management light. Possibly the same issue as in your video. Have ordered a new throttle body, and will confirm if this fixes the issue. Will inspect old part for damage. Family car, has only done 26K miles.

@@Automotive_Solutions Emissions... yes, that's a tricky one. Never owned a diesel, so thankfully I didn't get stung with that dodgy scheme they were running. Until full electric cars and the energy networks have their game sorted, I'm sticking with small petrol engines.
All the extra weight is in safety & occupant protection systems, as I understand. So, we can be safe, or we can be green. I know what I'd rather be. Driving standards seem to be falling, so it's a no-brainer in my world. Maybe we'll have the luxury of both one of these days, but it's going to cost us.

Sustainability. That's the word I was looking for! If you can repair and maintain (as per your video so elegantly illustrates), then this will have a huge impact on the way we buy cars. Too many "sealed units" being put into new cars, and not enough end-user technical support from manufacturers.
Example: broken headlight on a Merc, but it's just the holding brackets. Common fault. Options are buy new headlight, buy used headlight, or Merc sell a bracket repair kit... but they don't provide documentation to show how to fit. Makes no sense to me, other than they're trying to drum up business for the dealerships.
