    The pointy tool for making holes in fabric is calle an awl. :D Thanks for the comparison video. Considering buying something for plastic snaps.

    It’s been awhile since I’ve used snaps, so your video explanation is great. I have all three fasteners but I can’t say which one is my favorite.

    There is also a Heavy Duty metal snap and they do come in a few colors. I used them regularly to make pants and shorts for our disabled son. Punching a hole first is essential for these heavy duty snap. And I used the first tool to install them. My hand strength is not the best but the tool sometimes bent out of shape and had to be tossed.

    I have the plastic kam system with a metal plier rather than your pink plastic one. They are surprisingly sturdy when clamped in place. It took me over 10 mins to cut apart one that I had put in the wrong way round.

    Thank you. Ive bought the metal ones for handbag pockets but wondering if theyre too strong. If I buy the plastic ones, would they fit in the metal pliers?

    • @TamarasJoyDIY
      @TamarasJoyDIY  Год назад

      Hi Ruth. The plastic ones will not fit in the metal grommet clamp. But different metal ones will fit in the clamp for plastic ones. Hope that makes sense. Happy sewing!

    Which one has the most holding force? Looking for something to hold fabric onto my kayak (so it'll need to go through Nylon straps).

      You are going to need the heavy duty KAMsnap system which I have linked in the description. The first two versions I introduced in the video are good for clothing and craft projects. The KAMsnap system lets you install snaps in a way that they will not come apart under heavy use. Hope that helps!

  • @barefacedquestions

    I may be in the minority who don't like the outside look of the metal snap buttons. I thought there should be a stud/post. And you can't use the pliers for the five-claw system to install plastic buttons?

    • @TamarasJoyDIY
      @TamarasJoyDIY  Год назад

      It is totally up to you which one you like of course :) but the plastic snaps do need their own clamp, they will not work in the metal clamp. Unless you are using the large press I talk about at the end of the video. It will do all the snaps, you just need to change out the ends to match. hope that helps, Happy Sewing!

    I'm sewing baby clothes. Which ones is the best to use?

    • @TamarasJoyDIY
      @TamarasJoyDIY  10 месяцев назад +1

      I like the look of the metal snaps. But the plastic ones are easier to install. The metal one works on a thin fabric layer, so baby clothes like jersey fabric should be fine. But if your fabric gets too thick the teeth from the metal snaps won’t hold as they are not long enough. The best bet of course is the metal snap press I show at the end of this video. Hope that helps guide you a bit better. And happy sewing!

      @heidilash9487 6 месяцев назад +1

      I bought the metal snap installer for baby clothes and I would NOT recommend them. The fact that they don't handle much cloth is a pain, but way more importantly; If you have a slightly loosely fastened snap, the back (clawed side) and front (male or female snap) pull away from eachother easily - exposing those metal prongs. SUPER sharp for anyone's skin especially a baby and also super scary if one came apart and they went to put it in their mouth! I make my own kids' some clothes, so this has been the experience for me. I am considering getting the plastic fasteners for safety sake, even though I don't like how they look as much.

    Metal snaps don't fit on fabric, they fall down when trying to open

    • @TamarasJoyDIY
      @TamarasJoyDIY  7 месяцев назад

      Yes, If the fabric is too thick the little teeth on the metal snaps will not be able to get through and connect to the other side. But if you are using them on a thin piece of fabric they will connect and stay put.
