  • Metal Max is an extraordinarily rich JRPG to look at from a story and setting perspective. Its world and stories take inspiration from a multitude of science fiction and popular media, including films like Mad Max, Battle of the Bulge, On the Beach, and Damnation Alley. The novel Bill, The Galactic Hero was also acknowledged for its style of humor.
The games are unified by heavy vehicular combat themes and a dystopian ruined world going through desertification. Metal Max leans heavily into other popular aspects of apocalyptic science fiction with varying importance in the stories of the different games involving androids, biomutants, genetic engineering, and rogue artificial intelligence. Metal Max 1 may even be the first JRPG to feature an Artificial Intelligence Apocalypse; something to think about here in 2024.
In this video I explore Hiroshi Miyaoka's inspirations for Metal Max gleaned from translated interviews after his work on Metal Max 4 and Metal Max Xeno.

Thank you for watching! I might have to hide or private this video in the future if it gets a copyright claim from Warner Brothers for the use of Mad Max footage.

metal max saga on the ps2 was my introduction to the series and the start of my love for the series, similar to DQ but the post apocalyptic settings and bounty hunts is what captures me and the abundance of really good soundtrack. tears of the 7mm canon or machine gun tears on metal max saga from ps2 is by far my favorite ost along with nothing feels like home. and years ago while trying to play the old metal max games from nes, snes mmax game, glad to found that my fav ost starts there and continue to use that soundtrack really resonate with me at the time while playing games back then.
