- 1066. Vikings, Normans, Anglo-Saxons. The Battle of Hastings. The climactic events in the 6th year of the 6th decade of the 11th century in England had their origins much earlier in the 1000's, with the likes of the great Viking lords Cnut the Great and Sweyn Forkbeard, as well as those Anglo-Saxons who fought tooth and nail against them like Edmund Ironside and Edward the Confessor.

North Sea Empire, Now we're talking! This will complement my own upcoming videos very nicely. Bravo!
Oooo I can't wait to see what you've got coming next!
4:10 Edmund and Cnut's agreement after the battle of Ashington was that Cnut would rule Northumbria, Mercia and East Anglia, while Edmund would rule Wessex. Whichever of them outlived the other would inherit the other portion of the land and become king of a united England
Great video pal. I sure hope this stays monetised, its going to a good cause, it was awesome collaborating with you!
Thanks you :)
Thanks man - thank you so much for providing the idea for the video and the script!
For making history not diverse enough and not telling about the genderfluid trans knights of the middle ages, bigot xd
@Jim lastname I needed to Google your Australian slang xd but Im sarcastic mate, I'm glad I'm not one of them xd
By the way he pronounces north sea empire i doubt it
As a Dane I am mad that my history teachers never teached me about the north sea empire
To be honest there was no point as it was just short lived
vinland saga Fan intensifies!
"Norman" is how you say Norwegian in Norwegian.
The more you know!
@@historywithhilbert146 "Normen" is plural, "Normandy" is land of Normen.
A translation would be “North men” or “Northern men”
@@LiftYagami It's spelled "Nordmann" but pronounced "Norman" with a silent d.
Medieval historians of that era contradict each other on whether the Normans originated in Norway or Denmark. Partly this is because to them, all Vikings were called Northmen, Danes or Norwegians, interchangeably.
Good lord one of my favourite topics, so dramatic and impactful! Thanks for the hard work!

Wow you already made it to 100K! Ga zo door!
So this must be the time period history channels Vikings is based in and what Vinland Saga is based on do to the use of exact names, pretty cool to hear the real story.
The Vikings show is based on the Tale of Ragnar's sons, which allegedly happened 150 or so years earlier.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tale_of_Ragnar%27s_Sons
that does line up because he starts in 970, though maybe they just took the name of the kings sons. Either way it still gives you a good idea of how things where and snake eyes is dead so not really following the tale of the sons.
Oh for sure, I just thought the saga may be of interest! The Vikings show definitely doesn't follow the tale 100%
can't wait for this to be demonetized for being "offensive" when your trying to do charity
Why is it offensive? That Anglo-Saxons got conquered by French speakers? Lol
valar The leftists in Europe will accuse this of being bigoted history, and that there should be more knights that have different genders and that of course that the kings, soldiers, people are not diverse enough. That’s the current climate right now buddy. :-/
No, it isn't. The far right is what people should be afraid of. Extreme nationalism, and yes, fascism. That's the current climate right now buddy :-/
@@squamish4244 The Far Left and the Far Right are both growing, and the growth of one encourages the growth of another. One does get ignored by the press more often than the other. Ignoring bad actors on one side because of political bias and ignoring valid concerns of one side drives them to become more extreme and and can encourage others to turn to these extremist movements. Globalist Socialism vs. National Socialism? Neither has any place in modern society.

Wow, those Bob Hope/Dean Martin movies really got hardcore!
Feedback: like most of your subscribers, I love history and I follow a lot of hist. channels. I hope you can focus on less known parts of history, instead of the same old rinse and repeat «fall of the empire» and «battle of agincourt». I prefer the alternative or different perspectives. I think you do a good job at that already, and I hope you continue on that path.
6:57 Its harvesting season!
Some use of maps would make this much easier to follow.
Do a video on the history of the Pacific Northwest of the USA
Fun Fact: Since Cnut the Great formed an empire and was Christian, the Pope granted him the ability to excommunicate. This means that if the Kings of either Norway or Denmark converted to Catholicism they could excommunicate almost anyone, as only the HRE’s emperor lost the power to excommunicate
I love learning about this stuff. :D My family’s actually descended from Harold II via his son Ulf (later Jordanus) from I believe Edith the fair?? Sources differ on which one, and it’s confusing. XD. His handfasted wife. XD
Lol. This is 1,000 years ago. Literally everyone in Britain is descended from people of note back then.

Do a video on the Bulgarian Empire. We used to be the largest Empire in Europe at one point.
Lol
Lol youse didn’t but nice deludamol buddy.
@@jackjft9654 What do you know about Bulgarian history? In particular the period between 700 - 1400s? The two major empires at the time were the Bulgarian Empire and the French Empire. Don't talk when you clearly know nothing about European history, in particular Bulgarian history.
ILoveCoffee so you’re telling me that Bulgaria was the biggest empire from the 700s to the 1400s, stfu fella and don’t make a fool of yourself saying I don’t know European history when In fact I’m European, and Bulgaria hasn’t even been apart off Europe for most of
It’s history. Bulgaria wasn’t that important in history sorry it’s just a fact.
@@jackjft9654 Did you get your history lessons from 4chan and reddit? lol You clearly know nothing about Bulgarian history, so you why are you acting tough with me? I didn't say Bulgaria had the largest empire during that entire period, you are putting words into my mouth and you seem to have trouble reading properly. I said we had the largest empire AT ONE POINT during that period of time. In particular during the late 900s to early 1000 AD. For several hundred years, Bulgaria DID had THE largest Empire on the entire continent, and we did also had a long golden age from around 900 AD to early 1000 AD during which we not only created the cyrilic alphabet but we also spread it throughout Europe, and we also spread religion and culture. That's why Russia and the entire eastern part of Europe is Christian today! We gave Russia Christianity, culture and language. To say we weren't important in history just shows you know nothing about Bulgarian history. We were THE most important nation at one point in Europe, since Bulgarian King was the Emperor of the east Roman Empire for several decades. Learn some history from history textbooks and stop parroting 4chan and reddit memes. Also, we weren'tpart of Europe for most of our history? What? How does that even make any sense? We are geographically IN Europe, so how we not be part of Europe in any moment of time in our history? If you're referring to the Ottoman occupation, that lasted 400 years, a small part of our 2000+ years of history, and even during that occupation, we were still part of Europe.
I am a history fan, but found it very hard to follow what was going on. A few family trees or something could have made this Game of Thrones a bit clearer.
I see what you did there ;)
part 2 when??
I am slowly starting to piece together my ancestry, and it seems to be largely from England and N.Germany, as well some Swedish. Its finally become clear to me, that all of my ancestry almost has the same thing in common, the North Sea. So I am here and wondering for any more connection between England and Germany specifically, as these were clearly my ancestors. Thanks!
Yep..me too. My results denoted mostly anglosaxon, danish, finnish, baltic..and even a little bit of italian..and further renfinements to my raw data displays langobardic ancestry..thus I think this accounts for the small proportion that was identified. And after further testing still, there isn't an iota of anything romance based whatsoever. Not that I would mind...it's just insane how so many germanic peoples are genetically intertwined throughout the course of history.
Can you please make a topic of the language: Lower Saxon. It is called Nedersaksisch in Dutch and plattdüütsch in German. nowadays you can still see the comparisons between English words and "Nedersaksische" words.
I can't find parts 3&4 :(
As i dane, i fully support this and approve it the viking verify
SLOW DOWN! I absolutely love your content but I rather watch 6 good videos then 3 rushed through ones.
The question is; has this stated monetised?
Probably not. But we can hope
This would also include York right, that's one of my mother's parents surnames and I have on my fathers side 2 names of norman ancestry

Does the current royal family of Denmark have any ties to the Danes that ruled England?
It actually does. The current danish royal family is from the House of Glücksburg, which is a branch of the Oldenburg Dynasty, which is a branch of the Jelling Dynasty that Cnut and Sven were a part of.
Why this use of music?
It was considered a pretty horrific thing in Viking culture to just kill women of childbearing age, so even if it wasnt the Kings sister, the King would have likely still acted.
Killing his sister made it personal.

Also (some art criticism), I thought they would've had christian crowns, that look like the sun and whatever.
The single most controversial moment in English history.
The execution of Charles I would have been more controversial in earlier eras. I am glad that republicanism is not such a big deal nowadays.

Wouldn't it be the 7th year in the 7th decade?

AnCap vikings?
Lombard flag when? 36th attempt, please daddy Hilbert
If only Harald or Harold won
What do you think would be different?
Anti Antiwhitism well England wouldn’t hold the Norman lands, so the continental aspect would be different
I think the Anglo Saxon language and culture wouldn't have suffered damage. The north of England wouldn't have been razed. The English wouldn't have been dragged into massive wars with France. The Normans and their successors also meant trouble for the Irish and Welsh. And there was the forest laws which eroded a mans ability to live off his land. The Normans are cool , but I don't think their rise to power was a positive thing overall
Also, I think they might have been responsible for a certain ethno religious group coming to England and having a role in society,
@@luciobrazil007 I agree, though I commemorate 1066 as a year of conquest. Harald Hardråde might have failed, but my man Vilhelm finished the job and we Norwegians are consequently the top non native English speakers til this day.
Question: do you consider Anglo Normans equally English to the Anglo Saxons?
