  • So, who exactly are those famous Norse gods and goddesses, and what is Norse Mythology? Well, to help us answer these questions I've been lucky enough to encounter a wild Noah from the History of Vikings Podcast (and now RUclips Channel!) who kindly agreed to make this video for me on here. He'll be taking a look at some household names like Odin, Loki and Thor, as well as a more in depth look at the other figures of the North pantheon like Njord, Frey, Frigga, Freyja and Heimdall. I'm sure you'll all love it!

      American = Cowboy
      Confirmed.
      The United States of Cowboy, on the continent of North Cowboy is the greatest country ever! As a cowboy, my heart swells with pride whenever I see a majestic cowboy bald eagle soaring in the cowboy sky, or when I hear the Cowboy anthem, or see the Cowboy flag. As we approach Cowboy's independence day, I'm reminded of all the nations that came before. Sometimes, I wonder if the vikings felt similarly...

    Wouldn't "germanic mythology" be more accurate? The scandinavians were not the only ones to worship them...

    • @historywithhilbert146
      @historywithhilbert146  6 лет назад +21

      No but there were slight differences between them, and the vast majority of what we know about them are from Scandinavian, thus on the Norse model. While we can fairly safely assume that other Germanic peoples like the Frisians or early Franks or the Saxons believed the same - we don't have enough evidence from them to be sure so this really looks at the Norse Mythology as recorded in the Eddas and the Icelandic Sagas among others.

      Norse is a much better word I believe. Germanic tribes on the continent (including Peoples in the areas of present Germany, Netherlands, England) came in contact and in some cases mixed with Celtic tribes and to some degree with romans. So that influenced their culture and religion. Norse/Scandinavian was not 100% identical to continental Germanic cultures

    • @thehistoryofvikings269

      That’s correct, it most likely existed before the Middle Ages. However, because Greek and Roman explorers never made it that far north, we don’t know much about this Mythology before the Middle Ages. No it was written down during the Middle Ages, but much later after the Viking age, during the 13th century :)

    The Saxons and Frisians belived in Wotan/ Wodan (Odin) and Tyr/ Donar (Thor) , like the vikings. But Thor and Tyr were often only one God. When the Franks under Charles / Charlemagne the Great were brutaly conquering the Saxons; he burnt down the Yrminsul/ Yggdrasil the holy saxon world oak of the Aysir/ Asen. That is a fact written in early documents by the Merowegian Franks and Saxons. Charles fought a brutal war to christianisize the Saxons away from the old Norse Gods.

    not sure about the word prayer? Worship, give thanks and be inspired by yes. Odinist faith is all about being inspired by the gods to raise yourself up with your own efforts and walk the path in life as guided by the faith / Gods rather than asking the gods for something in a prayer.

    • @thehistoryofvikings269
      @thehistoryofvikings269 6 лет назад +1

      Wessex Lives, that is indeed the modern way of practicing this faith, however I suppose it’s impossible to know how these gods were truly worshiped during the Viking Age. And prayer isn’t necessarily asking for something in return, as much as it is communicating with a god.

    Norse mythology is a semi transcript of of the early rising of humanity. While not complete in detail as to the beginning, it offers a look into a search of humanity"s beginnings N understanding. The imagery of Zeus and all the So called gods were written by those who were registering a time when humanity was not as cognizant as we R now..

One of which is turned in to a wolf by the gods and made to kill his brother so that the brothers guts could be made to shackle Loke.

      First off the story of Adam and Eve is symbolic like most of book of Genesis. Second it would be theologically inaccurate to assume that God literally looks like a human being and that he actually lives in the sky (Thomas Aquinas wrote more about it) nor is that much important how long creation of the world lasted. The word used in original Hebrew was yom which can mean time or period. yom", in its context, is sometimes translated as: "time" (Gen 4:3, Is. 30:8); "year" (I Kings 1:1, 2 Chronicles 21:19, Amos 4:4); "age" (Gen 18:11, 24:1 and 47:28; Joshua 23:1 and 23:2); "always" (Deuteronomy 5:29, 6:24 and 14:23, and in 2 Chronicles 18:7); "season" (Genesis 40:4, Joshua 24:7, 2 Chronicles 15:3); epoch or 24-hour day (Genesis 1:5,8,13,19,23,31). Most churches such as the Catholic church found a way to make a balance between scientific discoveries and basic metaphysics of the faith.

      That's not true actually. The main source we have for Norse Myth was written by an Icelandic historian called Snorri Sturluson during the 13th century AD. Norse Mythology was not in anyway created by the Christian church, although (as I said) much of it was written down by a Christian, who had a very tolerant attitude toward paganism. I don't know if one can ''create history'' or if the Christain church ''created history''. The cultures of Ancient Rome, Greece, Egypt, China, Africa, North America, and Australia beg to differ.
