    I would like to see a Battletech Total Warfare videogame using Wargame: Red Dragon as a basis. I think a scalable, real-time strategy game where you could play anywhere from mech vs. mech up to regimental or more, then cover multiple eras and expand on faction-specific things like infantry, spec. ops, etc. would be an incredible experience. Heck, could even include Aerospace and Warship warfare during the first few Succession Wars.

  • @watchm4ker
    @watchm4ker 3 года назад +53

    Sadly, that whole "Mechs vs Coffee" bit sounds pretty accurate. When most of the economy is geared towards surviving whatever conflict that rolls in, luxuries like coffee can easily dry up. Especially things like specialty crops, which are a hard sell to grow when food production is only just enough to feed a planet. Battlemech factories, on the other hand, can be build just about anywhere as long as they are kept supplied with materials and power, and have a way to deliver their goods.

    • @boomboomf2268
      @boomboomf2268 3 года назад +5

      Not really. In the lore battlemech factories during the succession wars are so expensive that basically no new ones get built.
      So Texs point was that it is weird that coffee is less common than the battlemechs.

    I admit that's kind of one of those things I loved about playing BattleTech. Since I mostly played RPG campaigns and not one off tabletop battles there was a lot of that moment of: "Well I'd LIKE a PPC but there isn't one available here so maybe I'll replace my damaged PPC with a Large Laser" or "I might have to replace that Medium Laser with a machine gun because something is better than nothing".
    I think it's just one of those neat things that happens over a campaign. Sure you started out in a stock Panther with a SRM-6 and a PPC. But well... the frontlines aren't as well stocked with mech parts as you'd like. You take damage. You come out of that theater with a Large Laser instead. Or your Jump Jets got trashed during a DFA and instead you end up with extra SRM ammo for the tonnage, etc.
    It's what makes it so that I'm really piloting "Kamikaze Rose" and not "A Panther". Gives that bit of character I find.

I tooled up a pack of Marauders with plussed out heavy lasers and a gauss rifle each and some jumpjets. Jump in, alpha strike their head off, jrinse, repeat.

    Realistic Classic BattleTech rules in a game would be great especially for fiddley rules like AeroSpace and conventional infantry. The only potential issue I could see people having is the through armor criticals that knocks out your gyro or blows your ammo but that’s part of the charm

    yeah i know the vid is old and such, but Firestarters, imo, is one if not the best light mech in battletech. it is reasonably fast, has good protection (if maxed) and with a pure support setup(as you can fit 6 or 8 support weapons in it), it is also a hell of a melee brawler

Tabletop Battletech is awesome (so-called classic Battletech that is) and once you learn the rules, they dont constantly change. Hmm... Tex, I notice that your mechs take a lot of hits they probably don't need to. You should always try to max your evasion when moving your mechs to preserve their armour.
    20:25 - I know, but I feel the need to say it regardless.
    24:30 - Err... Tex, Precision Strike doesn't change the *overall* chance of hitting the enemy mech, well actually I think it increases that too (I'll have to check as it's been a while), it increases the chance of your shots hitting a *specific part* of the enemy mech. Great for shooting off limbs or going for straight CT kills.
    PS: Again, I know these are prerecorded. I still feel the need to comment. :)

    Part of the codex creep problem, and why it doesn't happen in battletech is the transparency of the unit design rules.
    In Battletech's case, since the focus is on doing in-game what in 40k the Imperium does in-universe, that is strip the weapons off a frame and put on whatever, the "balance" mechanics are transparent. By this I mean not only does every unit have to follow strict tonnage and criticals rules, but while seemingly random at times, the C-bill cost of things is the same regardless of if that PPC and 4 jump jets is on a Panther or Black Knight. More importantly, for those who don't care about c-bills and just want strict values, the BV system is not only consistently applied across everything from a Mackie to a Masakari to a McKenna, the rules for how to calculate said BVs are in the book.
    The closest 40k came to this was in 3rd/4th edition Apocalypse where a chapter approved book had "build your own jank" rules and WAAAAAYYY back in 1st ed Rogue Trader where they showed how to calculate points for heroes. Problem is, neither rule set had ways of calculating special rules that were more than just a master crafted re-roll. Also If you tried to jank-build existing vehicles your calculations would come up at least 10% more expensive than the codex unit. Neither rules have seen the light of day in over a decade, since slapping a new turret on a leman russ is Gw-I mean the Mechanicus' job.
    It has gotten worse now since they removed all but the most basic keywords from the core book. Simple things like Feel No Pain, Fearless, Infiltrate and Deep Strike, while still doing roughly the same things are printed in the codexes under new flowery language like "Teleport Strike" "Underground Assault" and "Phase In" for "deep strike". I have no problem with cool names, but all they had to do is the following [a proposed re-write for the Tyranid version]
    UNDERGROUND ASSAULT
    {Using tunneling adaptations of various vanguard bioforms, the forces of the great devourer strike from below appearing anywhere on the battlefield}
    Tyranid units with this keyword may be set up in Strategic Reserve, entering the battlefield using the DEEP STRIKE deployment mode in the core rulebook. This deep strike cannot be affected by Wargear (reprinted in the appendix of this codex for reference)
    This way, if sad sausages figure out a way to break Strategic Reserve or Deep Strike they don't have to issue errata for every publication that had a variant of pseudo-deep strike, instead just fixing the rule in the core book. My cheeky addition of "fuk yo wargear" is to show that, yes, this is diggerent from Terminators deep striking and thus things like Teleport Beacons or scramblers do nothing to 60' meth snakes diggin through your lawn!

    I can tune into probably dozens if not hundreds of other channels to watch someone play BattleTech, but I choose Tex of the Black Pants Legion because it is easily one of the most entertaining and interesting channels to watch on all of RUclips (and that's not to disparage the other channels, they provide fine content, I just prefer this one). I like the way you add interesting commentary to your videos that doesn't always pertain to the game you're playing that gives us a glimpse into your other interests and your thought processes on how you make things go on this channel. In particular I loved hearing your take on the Codex Creep you mentioned in this video. I agree with you wholeheartedly on why Games Workshop made such a mess of 40K. I love Warhammer 40K and used to play Salamanders Space Marines and Tyranids back in the day, but Codex Creep completely ruined it for me, both by making my army builds harder to use and just being too expensive to keep up with. If they would just get their act together and settle on a finalized set of rules and stabilize the way armies are built I could get back into it, but until then I just don't have the time or money anymore. Anyways, as always thanks for the awesome video and stay safe out there!

    The creative freedom of the Star Wars Fandom has been mined for stolen designs recently. It's a hurtful thing to see, especially for a franchise that currently has access to the vast resources of Disney, a company that is known for its zealous pursuit of copyright. Comics stealing fan designs and art is bad enough for a bungled tie-in comic for a smaller IP like RWBY that spits in the face of the show's canon, but Star Wars comics stealing from fan is more painful because it is even less necessary.

    I havent been able to play tabletop wargames for about 8 years. I used to play 40k as well as battletech. I got to play a couple months ago for the first time but was looking and if I were to play a game of 40k I would need to drop cash for a rule book, a codex for my army, and the supplemental rule book for my forge world models. Instead I played battletech, and grabbed my total warfate and tac ops books, blew off the dust, and the pirate legion once again was ready for war cri......err battle!!!!
    Thats honestly whats so great. Yes new tech has released and the jihad ended then dark age started but we chose 3070 as our time and went at it. It wasnt the latest but it was a date we were all familiar with so thats what it was to be.
    P.S. An Atlas with hardened armor, a tower shield, battle axe w/ TSM, null signature, and acting as a C3 node is a complete monstrosity and no I dont feel guilty in the slightest lol.

    Codex creep is actually built into Battletech. They tell you that some units suck. That some units are OP, on purpose. An up to date Clanner army will usually trounce an up to date (sorta) Inner Sphere army, and that's how it's supposed to go. Units are good or bad depending on era, or even faction. It makes avoiding creep easy when you can legitimately claim it's part of the process by design.
