      I've recently been introducing a friend's son to the game, and he was overjoyed at learning about some of the things that can happen when you bring in the full standard ruleset. Mechs falling off buildings and landing on each other. Pilots passing out from heatstroke if their life support's damaged. A Stalker having about a 1/3 chance of exploding if it fires everything at once. Mechs pulling tree trunks out of the ground and beating each other over the head. Almost anything he imagined, I could say "Yep, there's a rule for that!"
      God I love Battletech.

    In regards to the Argo, Ive heard an interesting fan theory: That Sumire at least ( I think maybe the Engineer too) are ROM agents and they let you keep the Argo to help prepare the IS for the Clan invasion.

    • @bubbasbigblast8563
      @bubbasbigblast8563 3 года назад +4

      They didn't know about the Clans, they only suspected their existence; even if they did know, the Argo wouldn't help because it can't jump on its own. It's also a VERY good thing it can't jump on its own, because the entire crew would have been murdered by all the house intelligence agents fighting over it, before COMSTAR came in and killed everyone to take/destroy it themselves.
      As it stands, the thing is basically a white elephant: expensive to run, can't jump, has no warship level weapons, can't outrun something that DOES have weapons, and can't land on planets. It's a great mobile barracks for people completely unconcerned with space warfare, but it would die in minutes if it was used in an actual war.

    Fascinated to see what Tex's alternate strategy was. Personally I loop around to the left with fast mediums swatting down the turrets, making the cargo haulers run a gauntlet, while driving hot heavies into the water to exploiting ammo piles to take out multiple mechs.

    • @shawngillogly6873
      @shawngillogly6873 3 года назад +2

      I ignore the trucks. They're only bonus money anyway. I keep 3 mechs behind the hills, and put a jumper on the cliffs to the right to remove the LRM turrets. Then I wait for 2 or more mechs to get in the ammo blast radius, and make the crate go boom. Anything that gets into the pass gets mobbed from 3 mechs. And the jumper comes in behind to clean up shop once the turrets are dead.

      The extra drops mod is a life saver on the regular missions when the game decides that a two skulls mission = 3 waves of lances heavier than what you fielded with turret support from an "unoccupied base" and one "reinforcements drop" just for the hell of it :)).

Everyone plots out their movement in secret and then moves; it really sped up the game. Some rounds everyone spread out across the map, with no clear shots and other rounds everyone is doing piloting rolls to avoid collisions. The only Initiative came into play was for who was quicker on the trigger.

    I'm cautiously optimistic about Eisenhorn. The stories in the margins are a great way of exploring a setting. I feel that GW started to do that with the Horus Heresy series, but the plot armor got thicker and thicker for certain characters, and a lot of the Astartes suffered from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern syndrome and were largely interchangeable.

    Good old marauder. In MechWarrior 4 mercs with the expanded mech selection I would always grind Solaris until the marauder was available. Then proceed to hammer smash all the early missions with it. Three ER large lasers with either a clan gauss or a clan uac10 is a very lethal build. Bringing 6 of those to the party could get you through most of the game. Isn’t until late late in the campaign that all of your lance mates need to be in 100 toners.

      I should say I have an older version of windows. Forget if it’s 7 or 8. Windows 10 is supposed to be easier to get it to run on, but you still need to download some older versions of random things. Windows claims to be backwards compatible, but some of these old games need the direct X version that was around when they came out, not the current version. It’s all arcane and feels like computer sorecery, however plenty of people that know more then anyone should have walkthroughs on how to do it. My computer was just more stubborn then most. Good luck, the game is worth it, for a little while at least. I can’t complete the main campaign thanks to some mid mission cutscenes not working correctly, so I had to go to the level selector and make some custom cookie cutter mechs for them. It works, just doesn’t feel the same. Also those missions are very very late in the campaign, pretty much good until you have to make the hard decision as to which side to back.

    In fairness, Comstar probably wouldn't know/care about the Argo:
    1. it's basically similar (in function,) to a Behemoth, except it has weird hab pods.
    2. It can't jump, so it isn't a warship.
    3. It can't land, so it doesn't have some uniquely amazing engineering.
    4. It has no unique weapons or armor, so it can't defend itself against warships.
    5. They were smart enough not to talk about the Argo being Star League over the HPG net, so Comstar would at least need to work to learn it's special.
    6. The thing is very obviously in bad condition.
    As far as Comstar see's, it's just some weird ass cargo-hauler probably modified by pirates, and then stolen by yet more pirates when the crew of a jumpship decides to retire by selling it to some periphery state, who buys it third-hand. They might look into it eventually, but not before the Helm Memory Core gives Comstar something way bigger to worry about.
    ---
    So I started my own game because of Tex, with some mods to shake things up, and the first time I needed to hire somebody to replace a wounded pilot, there's a catgirl there looking anime as hell with a nonsense backstory on the store menu. There are other custom pilots, but they all look in line with the artstyle, so it isn't jarring; and yet, none of these mods were supposed to add pilots. A moral system, yes, mech varients, yes, a Timberwolf that shouldn't exist but does now because fuck you but please don't tell the phone company about it because they'll send ninja cyborgs to kill everyone and take it, yes, but no pilots and NO ANIME CAT GIRLS. WHERE DID SHE COME FROM.

    A few tips for this level for posterity, though admittedly no use if the playthrough was already recorded. The first is that you can deliberately blow up two ammo crates while still meeting all of the bonus objectives, (and you can afford to blow up some more without failing the mission) so if the enemy is within the blast radius you should definitely consider it. The AI is normally pretty good at spreading out its mechs, but once in a while you'll find multiple mechs standing next to the same ammo crate. If they do, its an opportunity too good to refuse.
    The other important thing is that you need to make kills very quickly to avoid being badly outnumbered as increasing numbers of hostiles converge on you. Actually makes for a great training exercise in focusing fire and target priorities. It is a desert environment, and some of the enemy light mechs will play defensively which can be very frustrating. The counter to this tactic is to melee them, which negates their guard/cover/evasion and other defensive bonuses. The Shadowhawk in particular is fantastic at punching smaller mechs with its good mobility and very strong melee hit for its tonnage. Otherwise, just a textbook case of shooting intelligently and not getting into a battle of attrition.
    As of the bonus objective with the ammo trucks, needless to say its optional so pointless to pursue them unless you can actually bring them down. Simply shifting your lance's position further to the left may let you get more shots off, but the trucks will floor it in a hurry. You should expect to need to send a fast mech to take them out within each of the trucks' first movement turn. Remember that melee attacks deal double damage to vehicles, so if you're close enough that is a clean solution. Otherwise, they do stop near ammo crates so that's also an option. And if neither is possible, the precision strike ability exists for a reason. It will improve your accuracy and also increase odds of concentrating fire on a specific component. In a game that's all about focusing your fire, that ability is kind of important.

    I very rarely read if I can at all avoid it because I'm terrible at it. My brain wanders so no matter what it might be that I'm reading, I can read an entire page and not comprehend any of it. Sometimes I'll have to read it three or four times before I finally manage to get it all. So reading takes a long time for me, so I just don't.
    But Dan Abnett's Gaunt's Ghosts series is the only series of books that I've ever managed to read all the way through. (up to Salvation's Reach, I'm a bit behind now) He's entertaining and knows how to write 40K without making every character feel like a terminator constructed out of adamantine plot armor. And it's not all grim ark war either, he does an amazing job of exploring each character as well, even many of the throw away redshirts. You get to the point where it feels like you've known Larks, Bragg, Ven, Milo and all the others for years.
    I fully admit there's likely better stuff out there to read, or maye a better author, but nothing that I've been able to bring myself to read fully and continue to go back to. For that I hold Abnett in high regard.

      If your mind is wandering during reading that's the writer's fault. Bad pacing is to blame. Most readers only skim, publishers contract by volume, and so writers are emboldened to pad out short stories to novel length with info dumps, padded out scenes describing every molecule in a setting or complete non-sequitur shoehorned in to reach publisher demanded submission length.
      TLDR it's not you, most writing really is garbage.

    I'm ok with the Argo in the game. I think Comstar not messing with it is at least plausible given that it is a civilian craft and doesn't have lostech like a KF Drive or it's own weapons. It is essentially a defenseless dropship that can not drop planet side itself, but instead serve as an orbital dropship hub at best.
    I could see Comstar risking the presence of their navy being known in 3025 to destroy a warship, but a civilian craft like this, maybe they are less likely to make that risk. Again, just saying I think there is enough plausibility to be in the game and left alone by Comstar.

  • @David_Fellner
    @David_Fellner 3 года назад

    I've said this in most of the other Scrombles videos, but I'll mention it here too. While the Argo doesn't have any tech or capabilities that would alter the balance of power, I think ComStar wouldstill have wanted it fire its databases, as those could contain Star League-era information.

    the trick to this mission is don't try and save ALL of the ammo caches, you will need to destroy one or two to take out enemy units especially the trucks when they are getting out of range. it makes the mission immesurably easier, i was doing this my first time with a victor, Orion, and two Thunderbolts and they took ALOT of damage even with using the ammo caches

    Yeah, that mission is probably one of the hardest, if not worst, in the game. No real cover, vehicles shrug off anything short of an AC20, and tons upon tons of mechs. To make it worse it's early enough that most aren't even as heavy in tonnage as Tex is by this point.
    Also NO NOT HITMAN!

    Yep, the Argo.. I think they would have offered the player a nice low age Union and some mechs for the Argo.. and then just simply taken it from if you had refused and killed every last member of the unit with the aid of one of their Lola Class Destroyers.

    • @bubbasbigblast8563

      Something bigger than a Union, but yeah: a big Dropship, some mechs, and a promise to pay the ship's maintenance cost until most of the original mercenaries retire/die. They might not be happy about it, but the Argo isn't jump-capable, so they wouldn't have a choice.

    I agree that the human element must never be ignored in stories. It's the spice added to a make a meal perfect - I saw Gallipoli recently (a 7 episode australian mini0series) and the action was nice, the high command talk was interesting but it was following the PFI in the trenches and their struggles that made it hit home, seeing them have to deal with and live in horrible conditions. Also agree that stories in all eras should be told (I would love a coherent telling of the Jihad, reading about it in various short stories paints a very confusing picture - Case White was fun however). Regarding mysteries ... hmm, agree up to a point, like midiclorians are unnecessary and dull, adding nothing but Anakin's backstory via Clone Wars I enjoyed and liked. The Horus Heresy and bits of the Great Crusade being fleshed out are things I enjoy (I'd say the Primarch scattering is still a mystery, the stories don't really give a clear answer). Where it gets annoying is that you have fans who interpret everything as truth - even info from freaking Chaos Deamons. I mean, unreliable narrators are a thing for a reason but it's like most people can't grasp that concept. A proper Battletech show would be awesome but ... well look at Disney SW and the ST ..... yeah Rogue One was good and the rest was ... no comment. Plus a studio might want them big china bucks and how much pro-Capellan stuff can you stomach? That was 90% a joke, studios are greedy we all know it. Urbanmechs doing DFA. Looooool. They just need to be painted to look like Mario and you're golden.

    Very few of the novels captured the feel of the grunts, which is where I think Battletech could shine with new stories. We got the nobles and such.. the high powered groups. But the novels I enjoyed most were the down to earth ones.. like the Grey Death Legion's first and second ones. When they were still starting out... they were not the GREY DEATH LEGION they were just another merc unit.. barely scraping by.
    Some of the other novels and a lot of the fluff bits/short stories made the world more real for the average soldier/citizen versus the elites.
    Though I do prefer pre-clan invasion... though a lot of the good stories were during and post invasion.. Though Jihad and on just no..

    i grew up on the live action intro's to the games so i can handle cheese i just want something more fleshed out than a 4 minute intro that leaves me craving more big shooty robits. Closest we've got was Pacific Rim and they did a great job on that.
    inb4 i accidentally trigger the monkeys paw and we get some hack adaptation like the guy who made the resident evil movies and now a monster hunter movie.
