I'll tell you a story....I met a guy when I was young and he asked me out on a date. He took me out to dinner in San Francisco and he picked me up in an old station wagon. Even though I knew he came from the same affluent neighborhood I grew up in, the car didn't phase me (though I did chuckle a little to myself) and we had a nice dinner. Over dinner, he asked me if I would be interested in taking a trip up to Lake Tahoe. He said his brother owned a cabin up there. I said that sounds like fun! So we planned it for the next week. Well, to my astonishment, he picked me up in a 1964 Ferrari! I was stunned. Beautiful car. We had a very nice ride to the lake. We got to the cabin which was right on the shores of Lake Tahoe with its own boathouse. Doesn't get much better than that. We had a very nice weekend and I learned that his brother's house at the lake was also his house. I also learned that what he did for a living was restore collector's cars. Later he took me to his warehouse and shop. Funky old place in a bad part of town. But when you went inside, it was full of gorgeous cars. Avanti's, Woody's, more Ferrari's etc. So I guess that is one way to vet a potential date. We dated for a short time. I wanted to marry for love and eventually I did. My husband was a normal average guy without a lot of money. My advice to Joe is to vet potential wife material and make sure he knows what their values are. If you think all they care about is the money, run away in the other direction. One other note: Be careful if you are dating someone who has not lived with money; know that they maybe weird about money and uncomfortable. It's not always easy to hang out with a bunch of rich people. Just be careful and marry someone with a good heart. And I would get a prenup too.

He said that when he got to know a woman better, he would show up in the luxury car. He told us that it surprised most women because many did not figure he was yet established in his career. He kept quiet about his savings and investments. 'Smart guy, though not exactly dating material because of his mild craziness. 😂😂

Maybe deep down he believes the only thing he brings to the table is coming from a family with money and projects that onto others, creating situations where it becomes true. If he overly emphasizes his affluent background and then interprets feedback to his own emphasis as them using him, he is creating reasons to remain distant and withholding, which is probably his comfort zone in the first place. Or maybe he is more likely to choose people who use him because that also reinforces his pre-existing world view.

I think people are getting this guy wrong. Is not that he likes to brag. If you rematch, he keeps it general and than Jay keeps pushing for details.
His problem is that he is too honest. He admits he has money because of his family. He admits they have around 10-20 mil.
The core issue is that he is too honest for his own good.
My advise, is to move to a place where people don't know you.
When asked about family, be even more generic, and just say Healthcare or Helping The Community.
And when asked about yourself, just say you are thankful for the oppotunities you have been presented. If the girl or family push, then move along. If they get the hint that they should respect your privacy, then congratz.
    People are not the problem.
People are how they are, because of X or Y. Doesn't matter. But I think we all understand respect. That is universal.
Some may decide to respect your life or not, but that is where you come into the picture.
    Embrace your personality.
If you are too honest, then build a method that protects you. If you are too trusting, then be careful.
But don't be super secretive or a lier either. Learn to walk the line and embrace your flaws but also your strengths.

At no point does he need to share how much money him or his family makes.
That is none of the parent's business.
      Is she happy?
      Do they have a roof?
      Do they have food?
Do they feel financially stable to succeed?
      Ok cool.
Nobody needs to know the exact details other than the girlfriend. And even then, he doesn't have to disclose it all unless they are planning to get married.
What if the guy makes 50K year, vs a guy that makes a 500K. It makes no difference. Whatever flaw the guy has, is not for the parents to draw the line on.
Parents give the advise and wisdom.
And then the kids try to live their life the best they can based on those teachings.
Your screening process, as a parent of a full adult, has no weight on their decision. Advise always has value, but is up to the person to decide how much weight that value gets.

We were driving through the fancy lake house area to a party and he started pointing out things. "My grandparents live down that way. That's their country club. That's the tree my dad crashed his mustang on when he was 16." Stuff like that. It was very weird for me to navigate, because I did like him for him, but when money entered the equation it definitely changed things. That idea of financial security was very attractive. I couldn't help but be more attracted to him because of it. But I also felt immediate pressure and weight.
