Never ceases to amaze me, the skills, art and extent of model railroading in this day and age. Having been a model railroader for some 55 years now I have finally managed to get my trains and locos to run quietly and now I am told I should have them make noises!!!
Don't think that the engines need to make noise. I hate most of the bad engine sounds and most of the horns. Most of the engines sound like 1940's cheep electric razors and I have no sound on any of my engines - just a wast of money.
I really don't like the sounds that current DCC sound boards make. So many of the engine noises sound like a 1940's electric razor, very loud and just bad. Silence is golden...I'm glad my battery system does not have sound yet.......
Frank Kopke I don't know what language you speak. You use words like railroading, railroader... but when I try and understand your shitty definition on rail roading I am somewhat at loss to understand what do you mean by roading, roader and nonsense, because I see no road under rail tracks. Perhaps you are trying to tell us that a railway is a road, as in 'roadway', which is a track made of gravel, or laid with bitumen or made of concrete and used for pneumatic vehicles, but for trains, how does it become a rail road when these are tracked lines made by laying two steel beams on each side of an endless row of wooden or concrete sleepers and only run in two direction. How does that become a road to call it a rail road? I thought Americans were highly educated and spoke proper English but now I am starting to doubt it and wonder the opposite on how some things turn out to have a shitty meanings, such as how the fuck does 'drone', a word that had always meant a continuous loud sound, become a name, machine or a stupid rc model Quadcopter and other bullshit? How does a railway become a rail road when the two are distinctively different, one is a rail track used for trains, the other is a road used for steerable pneumatic wheeled vehicle? No wonder why they say in the end, ignorance is bliss. Sadly, I have to agree on that.
Words cannoe express how beautiful this is. It's like the culmination of all my dreams as a kid, divulging into the world of model railroading. it's absolutely wonderful~
Absolutely fantastic. I have watched this video many times but love "driving" around the layout. This layout must have taken many, many hours to construct. I love the desert sandstone effect scenery.
Thank you for the kind words. We as a group really enjoy getting to share the layout with the world! We have been working on this layout for over 10 years, meeting every Wednesday night for a few hours. Many hands make the work easier.
This was a very enjoyable ride! Smooth, and so realistic! The shooting, too, is very good: high-quality image (plenty of detail) and almost no distracting distortion. All in all, most commendable work!
I know Im asking randomly but does anyone know of a trick to log back into an instagram account? I was stupid forgot my account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
@Jedidiah Douglas Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I really love what you do with the camera and the sound effects and the scenery because you made it sound so real as if I was there in the train driving it.
Thank you! The sound is directly from the model locomotive. For this video i used an MTH GP38-2 which uses their protosound decoder. If you havent yet, please subscribe! I have another video similar to this in production now that will take it a step further!
Best cab view I've seen! Love the view coming out of the yard and being switched to the main line. All the signaling stops. Very realistic Great job. I would run the on screen text twice as long so it can be fully read. Thanks!
Thank you! Yes and we are grateful that the owner shares it with the group. I have a Walk-thru video that I will upload in the next couple od days that gives an overview of the entire setup. Please consider subscribing
You’re welcome. I thought I did subscribe but I realize I haven’t. But I took care of that. I’ve always loved trains especially model trains. I never, however, had the privilege of having my own set up. Mostly due to lack of space. Hopefully one day before I leave this world. In the meantime I’ll just enjoy yours!
Thanks. I will pass on the kind words to the group. I too wish I had his layout here at my house, but blessed to have a good friend who has invited me to share in his journey. Maybe someday we will also have our own!
A superb layout imo, very much enjoyed the ride while I ate my dinner haha. Anyone can tell the many, many hundreds of hours & a great deal of money invested here, your camerawork does it justice, it was an incredible ride!!
Thank you for the thoughtful words. Yes, Lee and our group have been working on this layout for 10 years now, and it has come a long way, thanks to the talents of many friends!
These model trains have gotten so fantastic! Even the engine sounds and the bell ringing...awesome! Is it possible to visit /see one of these incredible layouts? 😁 This layout must've taken years to build!
This was the best 23 minutes I’ve spent in a long time! The crew has done a masterful job in almost every area of the layout. You know I cannot tell you it’s perfect - then we wouldn’t have anything to comment about! Except for a few dingdongs, most criticism was constructive (Hey England - bite me.). So my only gripe was your screen notes were much too brief. But certainly not enough to keep me from “liking” and subscribing. The fact that this video is almost two years old but yet you still respond to comments means a lot to me: you are helping us become better modelers, I’d like to think we’re helping you make better videos. Except of course for that “perfect” modeler from bloody Eng... well, never mind. Thanks for the ride, now excuse me I have some more videos to watch! Ghost of SP Fresno CA
Thanks for the feedback. Yes the whole group reads the comments during our weekly work nights, and we all enjoy a good laugh at "those" comments! The imperfections give the layout character, and a testimony that as a group working together, some folks are new and it's great they can practice on this layout. Thanks for subscribing, we have some other videos we're working on for this layout (just have to find time!)
That is a wonderful long and interesting run with well done signaling as well. My only small criticism (if I may) is that the right of way could be improved by painting the rail sides throughout in a brownish rust with weathered black on the mainline only, and doing a more a realistic ballasting job going forward. some area's appear a little wonky. But overall this layound is spectacular!
Thank you so much. I have to give a shout out to the rest of the group though. This layout is owned by an individual who opens his home every week to his train buddies. We meet weekly to work on different areas of the layout as our skills allow. It really is a team effort with each person bringing their own style to the table. And everyone (including you guys here on RUclips) get to benefit from it! Thanks for watching
I thought at first this may have been a club layout--the giveaway was the plexiglass covers over the signals on the egde of the benchwork. This is typically done to protect them during open houses, but then the shelves with all the exposed rolling stock say this is a private layout. Your comment above fills in the rest of the story--so it's actually a little of both if I'm not mistaken. Just out of curiousity, what is the helix visible at 2:48 made of?
Thats where most people get confused with our arraignment. Yes it is privately owned, but the house is open to close friends to work on it as their own. I put way too much work into the signals to see them knocked over! And they have been, sometimes even with the guards. We do have open houses where area modelers are invited, but generally our weekly work night is word of mouth, and generally open to anyone who wants to visit. The helix is made by www.easyhelix.com/ and has held up well over the years.
Herb will appreciate your comment! This was a Walthers kit he built just for this scene, and it gets a lot of good reviews from first time visitors to the layout! Thanks for watching
It was amazing, I enjoyed it. If the Over Electric Lines where there, it would have been better... I understand that the making would be still more complicated.
loveing this so fare this guy omg just like me back in the day takeing things way way way to fare but his work is better then mine was very well made props big time
At 11:25 we saw a stop signal. Why did it show red as there was never a problem and the train then went through the red??? Why not have a reason for the red??? Nice straight track and smooth curves. Why don't you remove the nails in the middle of the track as most of the track is finished and removing the nails would make for a better realistic road.Looking at 14:56 someone knows how to lay straight track - I love it!!!!! Even your track that really can not be seen is straight with smooth curves - wow!!!
I like the idea of removing the track nails, and will forward that on to the owner. He was very meticulous when laying the track. We rarely have a derailment not cause by operator error. As for the signals, I designed the system based on current UP signalling methods. This crossing is an Automatic Interlocking. The logic is programmed to allow a "first-come-first-serve" approach-request. I failed to reset the interlocking while setting up to record this. The signal to the left of our view at that point you can see is Clear. Like prototype automatic interlockings, I have a key over ride, where crews can "work the box" when met with a Stop signal. Just like the prototype, crews comply with the instructions as to how to proceed. As you watch, the Clear signal drops to red. I did press the request button, but a track light must of been stuck on, and the signals are interlocked. It was red for something... Just dont know what lol. As per the instructions, wait a set amount of time after working the box, and if no permissive signal is shown, proceed passed the stop signal at restricted speed until reaching the next signal. Which is why I proceeded slowly to the next one, which happened to also be Stop. (I forgot to clear that route, and scurried into the dispatch room to line the signal.)
Sometimes less is more. While this is on the larger side of most privately owned layouts, it takes quite the effort for our group to keep it cleaned and maintained.
Overall it is great to have, but... it's a double edge sword. We meet every Wednesday to work on it. And there are anywhere from 3-10 people that show up to help. Quite labor intesive but the bonds that we have made with each other is worth it!
Pretty amazing track and set-up and I'd like to ask a couple of questions, which may have already been asked before, but how does the track old up over time and the elements? What is the actual track voltage? Do you have have any problems with critters or wildlife causing havoc? This set-up makes "A beautiful Day in the neighborhood" look amateurish. ;) Thanks to Bill and yourself for making this possible. What drove me to this sight was trying to setup a train track under a Christmas tree.
Thank you for the comment. The track voltage is a constant 16v AC, and we use a DCC control system made by Digitrax. This layout is HO Scale, and in the basement of the owner's home, so no wildlife other than a couple of over-zealous model railroaders! As for the track, it has held up quite well over the last 10 years. The crossing in the desert actually needed replaced as the plastic frogs were wearing thin. But we operating dozens of trains a night, and 1 night a week so a lot more than the average layout.
Thankfully for our conductor, the rules for Automatic Interlockings allow for trains to pass Stop indications after the time has ran on the key release box.
Wow really great. Please on your next videos, leave the no screen captions on longer. Right now they are to fast to read. But everything else - Wow.......
The room is roughly 27x60, but doesnt take up the whole room (yet). Now that we have the main line rebuilt, I will make a new cab ride, and include the upper deck. Keep Watch!
If they haven't done so already, the Signal Sighting Committee needs to have a look at CP 465 and adjust its angle for better visibility for drivers (sorry, engineers for you Americans) stopped at it.
Amazing layout, THANK YOU FOR SHARING!! I have 2 ask you, how many cars, long train will be able to hold the helix. I've had problems at a club, I used have with my 20 cars, laying down, going around the pole. They fell off the upper, to the lower. THANK YOU!
Very impressive layout. I really like the Great Northern passenger train and the Santa Fe van. Just wondering what those pieces of plexiglass are for. Can you do a run on the top shelf.
I wasnt sure which GN passenger train you were talking about, I honestly couldnt remember it being in this video so I had to go back and whatch the video again myself. Im not sure who's train that was, but I will ask the owner next week and see what I can do.
It would be nice, if, at some point to reveal the sound locomotives pulling the train, how many cars in the train, duplicate the trip with the camera at different locations of the train... to me, sounds like first run Rapido GMD-1's.
If you are refering to the paper sign against the wall about 1:35, it says Congress Park. The layout owner lived for a time in Chicago and rode the BN metra line many times, so some of the passenger sheds are named after stops on that route. Thank you for the kind words. It is always a work in progress, and a huge team effort!
Signal CP 212 at 1:45 doesn't seem to make sense. Firstly it's _after_ the points (switch), so the train didn't actually pass along the track it was directly over, and second, how does it tell you if you are going straight ahead or diverging to the right? Wouldn't you need two signal heads, or some other kind of junction indicator (like a UK "feather")? Superb layout however. I can only dream of having a model railway like this.
Good observation. Making lemonade out of lemons, I guess lol. At the time of this video, the switch in question was not powered, and thus not controlled by the dispatcher. The signal here only showed track conditions ahead of that switch but only for the route lined. Not prototypical, but I was doing the best I could given the existing track plan, and operators still learning how to run trains based on signal indication. With our recent track re-alignment project, this has been fixed. The signal at this same spot is now a dwarf, and the switch is powered, protected by the dwarf. Thanks for the comment!
nice layout. i will bet this is a HO setup. i also have HO but my only gripe with them is the horns have never been any good they just sound cheap. wish they would make them better. .
Thanks for the feedback. Interesting idea about using a non sound engine. I plan to run the camera car again soon since we just finished a major overhaul of the main line. I will take this under consideration. Thanks
What an amazing layout. 16.17 noticed you have a Thomas and Percy locos on the shelf ! That is an impressive collection of locos and stock. Is this your own or is it a club? Either way its awesome. thanks for sharing.
Yes, the younger kids sure do love seeing Thomas & Friends running on the layout. The layout is privately owned by a friend of mine. Us and his group of close friends meet at his house every week to work, play, and just hang out.
@@signalupproductions Quality. I don't have a layout myself at the moment, but planning my layout of a lifetime ready for the building to be built next year in the garden to house it. In the mean time, I am enjoying building stock, both coaches and wagons, and also complete trains. I run them on a friends layout. It must be a model railway thing, as we do exactly the same. 12 of us get together on a Thursday evening, have a few beers, run our trains and just chill out.
say I was wondering why did ur train run a red light at 11:22...why didnt it turn green?....other than that ur layout is amazing...also is ur locomotive a MTH brand, I have MTH and mine sounds exactly like yours....bell, horn, engine, and crew
You have a good ear. Yes I was using my MTH GP38. As for the signal, this diamond is protected by an automatic interlocker. So the logic to clear a signal (better than Stop) depends on several variables. If you look to the opposing signal bridge to the left, you can see in the video it was green. I guess prior to me recording, I moved another train around which must have triggered the approach. There is a key release here which I tried to operate (which set the other signal to red), it should have then cleared the signal for my train but (probably my programming error) it did not. So the rules say for an automatic interlocker, one you operate the key release and wait the proper amount of time, a train can pass the Stop signal proceeding at restricted speed until reaching the next signal. You will notice how slow I went from this point to the next signal. We have since rebuilt this part of the layout, and I am programming the new interlocker which will work better (and it now has a working semaphore!)
That's so awesome. ...u are a master builder in my eyes, u should take a look at my vids as I'm making a layout myself. ..I just did a switching video with my scrapyard...check them out if you can please...subscribe if u like
be professional, edit out the inside of the tunnels. At 11:26 it would be nice to have a train cross the diamond and actually have a reason for the red light. Right now there is no reason to hold the train we are riding... Nice layout, I hope I have the time to do mine as good as yours.
Clearly you dont work for the railroad. All too often you sit at a red light and see no train. Plus... he said he had to 'run time on the interlocking box' . Happens all the time in real life. How about you be professional and appreciate what a fine work of art this layout actually is.
To my knowledge, no one in our group has any trains from other countries. Although in another of my videos, I visited Trainfest in Milwaukee, WI USA and there was a modular club with Australian trains operating
Bobby Slater in this case, i was using a GoPro camera sitting on a flat car. GoPro's and similar cameras use a very wide angle lens, leaving a fisheye look. Just the trade off with action cameras
Never ceases to amaze me, the skills, art and extent of model railroading in this day and age. Having been a model railroader for some 55 years now I have finally managed to get my trains and locos to run quietly and now I am told I should have them make noises!!!

I don't know what language you speak. This is fantastic. Feels like really we are traveling with such a beautiful topography. I liked it.
Thank You! Herb put a lot of effort into the scenery. I will pass on the kind words to him!
What a display! Super nice!
Nice layout, wish I had the room for a big layout like that ..
I really like that massive grain elevator.
Thanks. I will pass on the kind words to the group. I too wish I had his layout here at my house, but blessed to have a good friend who has invited me to share in his journey. Maybe someday we will also have our own!
WOW - your tracks go for miles & smiles!!!
If people dont leave with a smile when you leave here, you dont like trains lol

amazing that these railroads can run so long and so hard without a derailment.
Don’t care what others say!.... this is just amazing!!

this place looks so real that pretend train conductor should be fired he just ran that first red light light😉👍
Thankfully for our conductor, the rules for Automatic Interlockings allow for trains to pass Stop indications after the time has ran on the key release box.
wish i had a layout that took 20 minutes to get around!
And with other trains running, it can take up to an hour having to wait in sidings!
bro this is cool I have a layout not as good as yours but this is very cool I also noticed you have Thomas and percy in top left corner 21:44
Yes, when younger kids come over they love to see them run!
sweat
Wow really great. Please on your next videos, leave the no screen captions on longer. Right now they are to fast to read. But everything else - Wow.......
Good feedback. will do Thx!

Great model layout !😁
Thank you. We like it lol
WOW this is amazing! Is this all in one house? Is this also the same guy that has the 747 simulator, must not be married LOL, awesome job!
WOW, enjoyed the ride!! How big is the layout?? Would love to see the upper level as well...
The room is roughly 27x60, but doesnt take up the whole room (yet). Now that we have the main line rebuilt, I will make a new cab ride, and include the upper deck. Keep Watch!
Daaaamn, layout goals.
THANK YOU!
We typically only run 25 car trains, but we have had one person run a 70 car train up, with pusher engines on the rear. I believe the radius is 34"
Very impressive layout. I really like the Great Northern passenger train and the Santa Fe van. Just wondering what those pieces of plexiglass are for. Can you do a run on the top shelf.
The plexiglass is there to protect the signal masts that are too close to the edge of the layout. Too many stray elbows
So that's what they are for. I see. Could you run that Great Northern passenger train in your next video. I'm a fan of GN.
I wasnt sure which GN passenger train you were talking about, I honestly couldnt remember it being in this video so I had to go back and whatch the video again myself. Im not sure who's train that was, but I will ask the owner next week and see what I can do.
The blue and white great northern passenger train.
Im not sure who's train that was, but I will ask the owner next week and see what I can do.
Aw man that was amazing!!! So realistic!! I almost felt the breeze blowing in my face!! Is this ho or large scale? Thanks for sharing!!
HO Scale. Thanks for the kind words!
That is so relaxing.
Respect from Russian railfans!!!! That's cool!!!
It would be nice, if, at some point to reveal the sound locomotives pulling the train, how many cars in the train, duplicate the trip with the camera at different locations of the train... to me, sounds like first run Rapido GMD-1's.
I could be wrong but it sounds like an Alco to me.
Very Nice!!
Great video!
Does that yellow sign say Conyers Ga? Excellent layout.
Oh 😲 look amazing city I like
love the caboose tracks. you can never have enough cabs for a railroad
Thank you for the video. Good job buddy
nice layout. i will bet this is a HO setup. i also have HO but my only gripe with them is the horns have never been any good they just sound cheap. wish they would make them better. .
Amazing layout, I love it!!!
Thank you! That means a lot and I will pass on the kind word to the group!
Great video, I would love to see this without the engine noise, just the sound of the train on the track.
Thanks for the feedback. Interesting idea about using a non sound engine. I plan to run the camera car again soon since we just finished a major overhaul of the main line. I will take this under consideration. Thanks
Love it! Subscribed!
12 of us get together on a Thursday evening, have a few beers, run our trains and just chill out.
i love to ride trains! this is pretty cool!
This guy’s basement is huge
Very cool!
Fantastic train ride. But some time train stop without any reason.
Following prototype railroad practices, a train needs to stop at red signals until the dispatcher instructs the engineer to pass it.
I have to know where is this layout at.it's HUGE!
It is big for a home layout. However it's not open to the general public. It is located in Southern Illinois
@@signalupproductions Gottcha, Thanks
Wonderful!!!!
Amazing
Outstanding!
play the video on 1.5x speed . thank me later.
btw great ride😍
say I was wondering why did ur train run a red light at 11:22...why didnt it turn green?....other than that ur layout is amazing...also is ur locomotive a MTH brand, I have MTH and mine sounds exactly like yours....bell, horn, engine, and crew
That's so awesome. ...u are a master builder in my eyes, u should take a look at my vids as I'm making a layout myself. ..I just did a switching video with my scrapyard...check them out if you can please...subscribe if u like
I subscribed to ur channel as I'm a big model railroad fan and always admire awesome work and u sir have an awesome layout
Just bl**dy fantastic!
how manny centimeters is the track/Europian?
Total main line is about 110 meters
be professional, edit out the inside of the tunnels.
Wow, just WOW!!!
Just love this stuff.
Well, that seems to be the whole house. Where do you sleep?
Thankfully it is in the basement!
Very nice, but I lost the overview.
do you have also Europian trains riding here?some Dutch?.lol.
To my knowledge, no one in our group has any trains from other countries. Although in another of my videos, I visited Trainfest in Milwaukee, WI USA and there was a modular club with Australian trains operating
Why do all these cab ride videos have that fish-eye appearance? Is it the camera's resolution or a RUclips glitch?
Bobby Slater in this case, i was using a GoPro camera sitting on a flat car. GoPro's and similar cameras use a very wide angle lens, leaving a fisheye look. Just the trade off with action cameras
Please ! Make your Inserted Titles longer so WE can read them Great ride though.
666 subscribers? Wuuuuuuuuuuut!
pretty cool
How much does it cost to build all this
10,000
Bom dia !
Como faço pra ter um trem desse ?
Loved it. Pour.me a whiskey on the rocks.
Make that 2!
